00:00I want to make sure I got your sentence right.
00:02Okay.
00:02You believe that most frustrated Warrior fans right now are pointing their frustrations at the GM.
00:08Yes, I do.
00:09You do.
00:09I do because...
00:10You do.
00:11I do, and I think that when you want to get frustrated and mad with the owner,
00:17it's because he is meddlesome,
00:19and you think that he made the Wiseman pick and blew it,
00:22and the Kaminga pick and blew it.
00:23I think in the moment, you're looking at, organizationally,
00:28there probably is more alignment than fans think,
00:31and I was thinking about this the other day.
00:33I mean, that fits not as much.
00:33Right, and, you know, if you're frustrated with the owner,
00:36it's probably because you think he's doing too much to say something that the kids...
00:41You're doing too much.
00:43Like, you're too involved in basketball,
00:44and if you're frustrated with Dunleavy, you look at it and you think,
00:48well, you're not getting anything done.
00:50This offseason was, okay, you got yaks.
00:52He landed in your lap at 11.
00:54Good for you, but is that it?
00:56And you're going to run it back?
00:57So, for me, and for the record, I'm not mad at or frustrated with either one.
01:03No, but...
01:03Because I know the situation in which they currently sit,
01:07and I don't believe that there is anything that they could do that they didn't do.
01:11That's fine.
01:12I mean, to me, what was interesting there is just a perception that you have
01:17and a perception that I have,
01:19and it sounds like they're a little bit different,
01:20and it's not even about the Warriors or Joe Lacob or Mike Dunleavy.
01:24It's about the fans and, right now, what they're pointing at.
01:29You know, during the season, Steve Kerr gets a lot of hits.
01:33Pod's got a lot of hits.
01:35Boy, did he.
01:36Draymond has arrived at a spot where he gets a lot of hits.
01:39Oh, he always has.
01:40Right.
01:40Well, it's changed through the years.
01:42It's usually histrionics and, you know...
01:44Right, but, I mean, that's changed through the years.
01:46Back when they were winning championships, nobody was bothered by nothing.
01:50And now everybody just feels like it's...
01:52Not everybody, but a lot of people feel like it's run its course,
01:55and it's more than they can take, and blah, blah, blah.
01:58Okay.
01:58But this particular offseason,
02:02I feel like I hear Lacob's name more than Dunleavy's.
02:06I really do.
02:08And I'm not saying I don't hear Dunleavy's name,
02:13but it's interesting because Dunleavy,
02:16I like the way you put it, where you're kind of like,
02:18hey, if you're frustrated with the owner,
02:20it's because you think he's doing too much.
02:22And if you're frustrated with the GM,
02:23it's probably because you think he's doing too little.
02:25Right, he's doing too little.
02:26That's fair.
02:27But everything we hear is that the two guys are in total lockstep
02:34on everything except for the timing of the announcement
02:37of Yaxa Lindeborg.
02:38One guy wanted it at three and a half minutes in.
02:41One guy wanted it at five minutes in.
02:44Steve Kerr in Slater's article today.
02:46Mike is really smart and prudent.
02:49He understands the landscape.
02:51Joe's in agreement on that.
02:53End quote.
02:54So I just wonder where fans are at,
02:56and this is a little bit of a dicey way
02:58to kind of open the door to a conversation
03:00because I don't want it to sound like I'm only inviting criticism,
03:03but if you're a frustrated Warrior fan right now,
03:08you're aiming your finger at what or whom?
03:11Or whom, yeah.
03:13Whom.
03:14Yeah.
03:15Whom.
03:16And I think, for me anyway.
03:18I've never understood who and whom.
03:20Yeah.
03:20And I've never tried.
03:21I'd get it if I looked, but I just don't care enough.
03:24I can't explain it, but I think I get it right pretty often.
03:27You probably do, and you're more on the linguistic end.
03:30You're more, like I have a trigger about it.
03:32Like, who gets it right?
03:33Or whom gets it right?
03:35I don't think that's whom gets it right.
03:36It's not.
03:37Yeah.
03:37It's not.
03:37If you replace it with he or she, it's who.
03:41If you can replace it with her or him, it's whom.
03:44Okay.
03:45I won't remember that at all.
03:46Heard him whom?
03:47But I'm super fascinated that you are the one that came in with the rule, not Dibs.
03:52I'm a grammar guy myself.
03:54Yeah.
03:54He's fresh out of school.
03:55I know, but the annoying rule, that's your thing.
04:02Laughing at your own joke?
04:04That's annoying.
04:05I was laughing at your face.
04:07Someone else would have the actual right definition and explanation with all the correct grammatical terms.
04:13That's just how I think of it.
04:13You had me at her him whom.
04:15Uh-huh.
04:16Yeah.
04:16And I got this jack wagon over here.
04:18I was laughing at your face.
04:20Your face?
04:22Well, I don't like that impersonation at all.
04:24I loved it.
04:24Anyway.
04:24That's a nine.
04:25No, your face was funny.
04:27I was crestfallen.
04:28Yeah.
04:29I was heartbroken.
04:29It doesn't mean that your face is normally funny, but it wasn't.
04:32The annoying rule, that's usually you.
04:36Good impression.
04:37So if you say.
04:39Wait, am I wrong?
04:40Am I wrong?
04:41The annoying rule guy is dibs.
04:44Come on.
04:45Oh, actually.
04:46That's an annoying rule.
04:48Actually, surgeries usually take nine months and 42 days.
04:51It's because I do the homework.
04:53I put in the work.
04:54I don't know how it's annoying.
04:55You said, I don't know.
04:56And I gave you how you know.
04:58No, I was just surprised that you had that.
05:00You came in with a very definitive, like, I know the rule, call on me.
05:05And I was like, wow.
05:07I thought that was, that's usually what dibs does.
05:09You direct your anger at whom?
05:10The way you check that is, you direct your anger at him?
05:14You don't say, you direct your anger at he?
05:16I think you're right.
05:17And I think you're wonderful.
05:18No, he's nailing it.
05:19He's crushing it.
05:21Right.
05:21But at the same time, I want to let everyone know, like, a Swiss cheese hole that I've
05:25got in my game.
05:26This comes from my childhood.
05:28All of us are triggered by things that happened in our childhood.
05:31My grandma was such a word police person that I've grown into an adult that doesn't want
05:37to hear it.
05:38I feel like I'm doing fine.
05:40I don't bat a thousand.
05:42I probably mess a word up here or there.
05:44And I'm willing to just go to the grave with that someday.
05:47I don't want to be told the right way to speak.
05:52Okay.
05:53But it's because of my grandma.
05:55Right?
05:55May she rest in peace.
05:56She's a wonderful woman.
05:57It's because of my father.
05:58May he, may he whom also rest in peace?
06:04Just he.
06:05I know.
06:06He was super strict and would correct you each and every time, especially if you ended
06:12a sentence with a preposition.
06:13That wasn't going to fly in the house.
06:15She, her, him, he, who, whom?
06:18It's her, him, whom.
06:20Do you do that at the bottom of your emails?
06:22No.
06:23I don't usually throw the pronouns in there.
06:25Just checking.
06:26Yeah.
06:26I mean.
06:27Whom does that?
06:28They, them.
06:29Whom does that?
06:30Just take a play off over there.
06:33Move on.
06:34Exactly.
06:36Anyway.
06:36At whom are fans the angriest?
06:39Hey, who y'all pissed at?
06:40How about that?
06:41That would not fly in my house.
06:42You ended the sentence with an at.
06:44At whom are the fans most angry?
06:47Where you at?
06:48Triple A.
06:49Where you at?
06:4995.
06:507.
06:5095.
06:517.
06:51Where do you at?
06:53Well, that's a great question.
06:55Or occasionally you'd throw out at where you be at, and then my father would get the
06:58paddle.
06:59That would be a get the paddle.
07:01You did not get paddled for English.
07:03I didn't get paddled, period.
07:04Oh, okay.
07:05He was all tuckered out.
07:06Come here over.
07:06Half fired.
07:07Paddling the other three.
07:09So you didn't have a career.
07:10Did you get spanked?
07:11Never.
07:12No.
07:12No.
07:13Not even with the hand?
07:14No, because the way things would go is my siblings would get in trouble.
07:18I'd be there snickerdoodle laughing and pointing, and then they would chalk that one up, and then
07:23I'd take the L later that day.
07:25Oh, they would beat you up when the L was looking.
07:27Yes.
07:27And then I would tell they'd get in trouble again.
07:30And then they'd beat you up again.
07:31What a cycle.
07:33Do I strike you as a snitch?
07:35Yes.
07:36Little Danny Dibley.
07:37Yeah.
07:38Absolutely.
07:39Whom beat you up the most?
07:42Who beat me up the most?
07:44Yeah, whatever.
07:45Their pronouns were she and he, respectively.
07:48Two he's and a she, actually.
07:50All right.
07:51Okay.
07:51She packed a wall up.
07:52All right.
07:53It ran its course.
07:54It ran its course.
07:57Now what?
07:58I feel like people are actually, like, I hear more about Lacob than I do about Dunleavy.
08:05And I, that's maybe a small sort of a quirk.
08:10Dunleavy is the one, like, they keep saying we're in alignment, so I don't even know if
08:15there's a difference between the two.
08:17You know, there's very few people that are actually weighing in on this stuff.
08:21And if they're all in alignment, I don't know why anybody would be the central figure if what you want
08:31to do is criticize, if you have frustrations right now about the Golden State Warriors and their lot in life.
08:39You know, if you buy what Nick Friedle just said, the struggles of now are actually the result of things
08:50that happened before Mike Dunleavy was even in power.
08:53Exactly.
08:53And I do believe that.
08:54And I will still, here's one thing I'll say about it, because I'm no different than any other fan.
09:00I've got frustrations about it.
09:02But I believe that Mike Dunleavy gets a whole lot of unfair criticism right now, mainly just because it's too
09:12early in his game.
09:13It's too early.
09:16It's too early to say that he's done this, that, or the other right or wrong, quite frankly.
09:22I have no issues with any of the drafts that he's performed.
09:26And as far as trades go down, the Jimmy Butler one, you can poke holes in it now, feels a
09:34little bit like a cherry pick.
09:35I think that was largely a pretty good deal that was paying dividends at the time.
09:43And then the Chris Paul deal, there's no way to make that one look good.
09:49But that came maybe, I don't know, 14 days after he was named the GM.
09:55And obviously, he took the job with a big problem that was just put on his lap that he had
10:03to kind of work his way out of.
10:04And that's how I've always viewed that deal.
10:06I've never viewed that deal as Mike Dunleavy sitting on the phone going, hey, watch this.
10:11Watch me cook.
10:12I'm going to turn Jordan Poole into Chris Paul.
10:14Like, that was a salary dump and a bad situation that he didn't cause.
10:19So, I'm not here to tell you that, I don't think anybody's perfect.
10:25I accept some measure of mistakes in the process of what any human being does.
10:31So, but I've, like, count me among those who are confused if you've decided that Mike Dunleavy's general manager tenure
10:41makes him an idiot.
10:43Clown show.
10:44Right.
10:45I, like, I don't, I, I'd love for someone to explain it to me.
10:49And you mentioned.
10:50I'm confused by that whole narrative.
10:52You made a good point earlier about, you know, name the draft pick that he's botched.
10:56And he hasn't really had opportunities.
10:58He had the one with pods at 19.
11:00That's a good pick.
11:02And this one with Yaxel, too early to tell.
11:04Too early to tell.
11:04But we're liking it early through eight summer games and whatnot.
11:07And you can talk about the trades that they didn't make this summer.
11:10And I don't believe any of them were available to him.
11:14I don't think that Boston's taking Jimmy Butler.
11:16I don't believe that Washington's going to trade Anthony Davis.
11:20And, you know, Nick Friedle mentioned it earlier.
11:22No, it was the Slater sound you played where Anthony Davis didn't want to go to Washington.
11:26And now he's in Washington.
11:28And maybe he wants to be there.
11:30And maybe they'll end up trading him.
11:32But if they do trade him, I don't think they're taking Jimmy Butler back at this juncture.
11:36Now, you get to February.
11:38Maybe Anthony Davis doesn't get an extension.
11:41And he becomes, again, somebody who might be viable at that point.
11:44Yeah.
11:44And then, I mean, on the Lakeham front, I don't know after what he's done in a decade and a
11:50half.
11:50I don't know as a fan, especially because nobody, like, buys a ticket to go watch an owner.
11:56I don't know how you could argue.
11:59We talked about this a little yesterday.
12:01I don't know how you could argue with a resume.
12:03And I'll even loop the Valkyries into that right now.
12:07What has happened with basketball in the Bay under Joe Lacob is pretty breathtaking.
12:14It's almost unprecedented.
12:16Completely.
12:17So, like, I don't know how on earth you could argue with that.
12:20The one thing that I'll say that I don't think is a completed product yet,
12:26but if you have this concern, then I get it.
12:29I think when people see that their owner is very, very involved in sports decisions,
12:39it doesn't matter the sport, when they see that, it makes people a little uncomfortable.
12:44It doesn't mean it's automatically wrong, but when they see an owner with his arms up in the draft box,
12:54that, and whether right or wrong, when we affix the James Wiseman selection or the Jonathan Kaminga selection to his
13:02desires,
13:04and then we see the way those worked out, it makes people uncomfortable.
13:08I still think that, like, it's going to be down the road before we really figure out whether he's got
13:14any Jerry Jones in him or not.
13:17But I understand why that makes people uncomfortable.
13:19Yeah.
13:20We're short of criticism on that, I think.
13:22You can be critical if you want, but I think you would have to then defer to the resume.
13:27And, you know, you've got that, you can say about a lot of different athletes,
13:32and certainly the owner, if he does too many interviews to you, and he fired off an email to a
13:37fan,
13:38and he's on podcasts, and he's here and there, and maybe that is somewhat annoying to you,
13:43but then you look at the resume, and for me, you have to default to that at all times.
13:46You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM, and HC1 San Francisco on Odyssey Sports Station
13:52and the home of the Golden State Warriors and Valkyries.
13:54Always live on the free Odyssey app and coming to you live from the Laughing Monk Studios.
13:59Cam Inman, in 15 minutes, we'll talk some Niners.
14:02We'll take some calls right now, 888-957-957.
14:05Let's go to Ed and Benicia.
14:06Hi, Ed, thanks for checking in, man.
14:08What you doing?
14:10Hey, how you doing, Mark, and Dib?
14:12Last time I saw you was over in Pleasant Hill.
14:15Oh, hey, that was a good day.
14:20And, you know, I won three tickets to a Warrior game that day, so I'm not complaining at all.
14:24Did they win, Ed, when you win?
14:27No, they lost to the Trailblazers.
14:29Oh, come on.
14:29And who do you blame for the loss, Lacob or Dunleavy?
14:32Or yourself.
14:32Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
14:34That was the night that they recognized the 1975 Golden State Warrior champion.
14:38Oh, okay.
14:39All right, so you got to do that.
14:41That's cool, Ed.
14:42Great.
14:43Yeah.
14:43So, in any event, I do have an opinion about this situation.
14:48First of all, about Mike Dunleavy.
14:50I think Mike Dunleavy has done a very good job as a general manager.
14:54And I like him a lot more as a general manager than I did when he was playing for the
15:01Warriors.
15:01I had a lot of frustration with Mike Dunleavy as a player.
15:05But, to me, he knew he was coming into a tough situation, taking over for Bob Myers.
15:12As you said, that situation with Chris Paul that was right on his lap and pulled and all of that.
15:17But, I think he's done a good job.
15:20And I think that Joe Lacob does deserve the bigger part of the blame here.
15:27Because I noticed that when the Warriors were rolling, when they were winning championships,
15:31you know, Joe was one of the first people to the mic.
15:34He had plenty to say about the Warriors all the way up to the idea of it being light years
15:40ahead of everybody else.
15:41And then, when the decision was made to select Wiseman, it became clear that he had his finger.
15:50You know, he basically kind of pushed for Wiseman to be selected.
15:53And when it didn't go well, now all of a sudden, Joe was not as available for interviews.
16:02And then what he ended up saying was that that decision was a collaborative decision, which I don't believe at
16:09all.
16:09I think Joe Lacob was the one that pushed for Kaminda.
16:13And he also is the one that pushed for Wiseman.
16:17So, he does deserve the majority of the blame for that.
16:20And I wish he would just step up and admit.
16:23And I know rich guys don't like to admit when they're wrong.
16:25But that's what needs to happen.
16:27Ed, thanks, man.
16:28It's a good call.
16:29And hope to see you out there in Jack's or somewhere.
16:34We're out and about sometime soon.
16:36Appreciate it, Ed.
16:37Thank you for calling in.
16:39And here's the thing on that.
16:41I guess what we're really asking, and I'm never really a fan.
16:45I understand where Ed's coming from.
16:47But I'm never a fan of, hey, sports person, you made a mistake.
16:52You need to call a press conference and admit it.
16:54Like, I just, I don't know what good that does.
16:57Like, is that really, is that how we do life?
17:00Like, you made a mistake.
17:01Now, here's a microphone and some cameras.
17:04Take accountability for it.
17:06There's a time and a place.
17:07But it's like, you don't have to apologize for everything that goes wrong in life, especially when it's well-intentioned.
17:14I think here's the bigger thing, though, that Ed's tapping into.
17:18The Warriors' struggles are the frustrations of right now.
17:22Now, do you think that they are a result of right now-ish, or are they the result of things
17:29that were happening five years ago?
17:30Both, and the right now things that are leading them to struggle are injuries more than anything.
17:37And the Jimmy Butler trade, it was good.
17:40It worked.
17:41You went around.
17:42Steph got hurt.
17:43And then Jimmy got hurt, and he's out for 10 to 12 months.
17:46I don't want to give an exact timeline because it's annoying when I, you know, happen to be, you know,
17:51the random fact guy or if I know grammar.
17:53So I'll abstain.
17:54But that, to me, is the now part, and that's out of your control.
17:58But you go backward, and yeah, the Chris Paul trade, and you got basically nothing back.
18:04You got a salary slot.
18:05And, you know, the Kaminga and the Wiseman picks, well, those don't look good.
18:09And Jordan Poole, he no longer is on the team for a number of reasons.
18:13And I don't know if it's solely because he didn't feel comfortable after he got punched by Draymond, but they
18:19didn't punish Draymond.
18:20I said at the time they should have.
18:22They didn't.
18:22So you can go back and track mistakes, but it's mainly those two draft picks.
18:26If those were hits, then at least one of them would still be on the team.
18:31The other one you might have, okay, yeah, we don't want to pay you this much, so we'll trade you,
18:35and we'll get more picks.
18:36Or you would have more, not optionality, but you would have had maneuverability.
18:40Because right now you have this year's team, you have no optionality, and you have no maneuverability.
18:46Until you get to the deadline and somebody maybe wants to take the Jimmy Butler contract.
18:50Starting in February, you've got actually an abundance of it.
18:54And an abundance of it.
18:56Possibly, yeah.
18:56Well.
18:57I mean, you really have the one move to make.
18:59I mean, you could trade Draymond.
19:00Yeah.
19:00You could trade Chris Tapps.
19:02Of course you could.
19:02I mean, you could do all that now.
19:19Of course you could.
19:21But if that's your take, then why is anybody even bringing Dunleavy up?
19:27Why is that a, I don't even know why that's a subject matter.
19:31I really don't.
19:32I think it's because, you know, the thinking is, if you just could have gotten Anthony Davis or Jalen Brown,
19:39you'd get LeBron too, and it'd be fun for a year, and you'd be better.
19:42Okay, listen.
19:43But I don't even know if that's true.
19:44I don't know if that's true, and here's what I would say.
19:48Like, I like the idea to some degree of players like that right now, but not at those prices.
19:58The prices that are being thrown around are absurd.
20:02I don't like those prices.
20:04I mean, here's kind of a weird take.
20:07I mean, the more I look around at the league and I look at what big-name players are going
20:15for,
20:15I mean, coincidentally, the Jalen Brown trade to Philadelphia is the only one recently where I look at it
20:22and I go, okay, I'd do it for that.
20:24If I'm Philly, all I got to do is give up an aging Paul George and very little draft capital,
20:31only one unconditional first-round draft pick.
20:34You throw in another one, it sweetens the pot for LeBron James.
20:38That looks like a no-brainer.
20:40But outside of that, these deals where it's like, I'm going to give you the good player,
20:45and then we get, you know, 78 draft picks.
20:51I know people are going to love to bring up the Knicks, and yes, they ran to a title.
20:56But for instance, the Miami Heat, did they get better?
21:00I don't even know if they got better.
21:03I know they got sexier.
21:06They got more attention.
21:08I don't know that Miami got any better by getting Giannis,
21:12and we detailed earlier the whole Kawhi Paul George Clippers Oklahoma City thing.
21:19Man, getting the star not only didn't work for the acquiring team,
21:24it turned the other team into an eventual champion.
21:29So, I love the idea of getting some help for Steph Curry, but not at any price.
21:34And it feels right now like we're at any price levels.
21:38Well, the fans can get desperate, and you can be thirsty,
21:41but it's clear that the organization is going to toe the line,
21:44and they're going to wait until they have the right move and pounce,
21:47according to what Steve Kerr said in the Anthony Slater article.
21:50And Miami got Bobby Portis Jr. and Giannis, and they gave up one, two, three, four players,
21:57and four picks, and a swap, and a second.
22:01And so, Miami basically, they're going all in on the Giannis era, however long that's going to last.
22:07And so, if you have a player like that, then you can maybe take that big swing with that level
22:13of draft capital.
22:14But beyond that, I think about Washington and Atlanta.
22:17They were able to get Trey Young for two players, no picks.
22:20And so, if you do get to February of this year, and you look around the league,
22:25and I mentioned this to you during the break,
22:27keep your eyes on Michael Porter Jr., who's in Brooklyn,
22:30and they're going to be bad again, and he's an expiring contract.
22:33So, you might be able to do what Washington did with Trey Young
22:37and package something to Brooklyn.
22:40You may not even have to attach a pick,
22:42because if they don't trade him at the deadline, he's going to walk.
22:46Yep, yep.
22:46Real quick, let's go to Colby in Oakland.
22:48Hi, Colby.
22:49Thanks for calling.
22:49What's up?
22:51Hey, how you doing, man?
22:54So, quickly, I just kind of wanted to make a point that I think a lot of fans,
23:01and not even fans, I think just basketball lovers, fans of the NBA,
23:05because I think it's kind of being centered around what do these, you know,
23:09childish Steph Curry Warrior fans think.
23:12But these are NBA fans.
23:14I think you throw conventional wisdom out the window
23:17when it's a top 10 player of all time.
23:20And I think that is when you throw everything out.
23:22I think that's when you say, yep, we're just going to be bad for 10 years.
23:25And we have to be okay with that, because this is Jordan, this is Colby,
23:30this is Magic.
23:32You just have to.
23:33And these people, I mean, he still has the juice.
23:36If this guy was a top 50 player, like right now, I would say fine.
23:40But he's still top 15.
23:42You just can't throw it away.
23:45People in 10 or 20 years will be looking at you like the owner of the Bulls.
23:49They will just say they had a chance.
23:51It was six.
23:52It could have been 10.
23:53We'll never know.
23:54It's interesting, Colby.
23:55I get the sentiment.
23:56I really do.
23:57Thank you so much for the call.
23:59But let's not act like Bulls ownership has not been criticized on the back end as well.
24:05You think they dumped off of Jordan too early.
24:08Let's look at what you're talking about, which is, hey, screw the future.
24:12Let's do it all for now.
24:14And then 10 years down the road, when you've been bad for 10 straight years,
24:18are you saying that they wouldn't be criticized?
24:20Because they will.
24:21Yeah, the Bulls have won five series since they had the last dance.
24:26Five series in 28 years.
24:28It's been brutal.
24:29I don't wish that on any fan base.
24:32Three decades of just sitting there.
