00:00When you mentioned the Cardinals with this loss, it's been a tale of two halves here,

00:06Even if you want to call the All-Star break the half.
00:08There was, you know, the Cardinals of May and June that I didn't expect them to win
00:15as many games as they had to begin with.
00:17And then there's kind of the Cardinals here from about mid-July to where we are now.
00:22And they have just not, they're kind of playing themselves out of the conversation.
00:26But it's not easy with the Cardinals because I don't know who they would sell
00:33or even who they might buy or go at that pitching staff.
00:37You're not beating anybody with that pitching staff one way or the other.
00:40So the Cardinals, if anything, feels like, are they just going to stand pat?
00:45Is that kind of what they're going to do?
00:47Yeah.
00:48I mean, gosh, it's really not the right move for them.
00:50I think that their odds are under, like, 10% now, maybe, to make the playoffs with this loss.
00:58And look, I mean, the reason why they signed Dustin May was to do exactly what he's done
01:04and then trade him.
01:05And now, Joe, are they really going to keep him for the rest of the season?
01:07And I guess if the CBA stays the same, then they could offer him the qualifying offer.
01:14But, Joe, they're talking about getting rid of the qualifying offer in baseball
01:17at the end of the season, too.
01:19So, like, I think that has to be part of the conversation.
01:21Look, I believe in Haim Bloom.
01:25I believe that Craig Breslow right now in Boston, Joe,
01:29is reaping the benefits of everything that Haim Bloom did.
01:32I mean, the Red Sox, all these players and everything that they have
01:35and all these trades that they can make are because Haim Bloom rebuilt this farm system.
01:39Haim Bloom got fired because he traded Moogie Betts for nothing.
01:43And we all understand that.
01:44And I'm sure Haim Bloom understands that, Joe, that that trade didn't work out.
01:48And because they traded a generational player for nothing, he lost his job.
01:52I think that's BS.
01:53I think he did a good job in Boston.
01:55I think he's going to do a good job in St. Louis.
01:58It's a tough spot to be in if you're him because he fully expected this team to be five,
02:02six games under, making trades and trading for the future.
02:05Instead, they've been around 500.
02:07So long story short, if I'm him, Dustin May is playing on another team in a week.
02:12If I'm the Cardinals, I'm not completely punting the season,
02:15but I definitely am trading anybody that I can to get value back that I may not be able to
02:20resign next year.
02:21So if I'm him, I'm making a deal.
02:23So I agree.
02:24I think now's the time.
02:25If you're going to do it, now is the time.
02:27We kind of felt like the Cardinals were going to be in one of those transition years anyway.
02:32And that would be, like you said, Dustin May is exactly the kind of guy.
02:38I mean, get some return back for the effort that you put in there.
02:42Because, my goodness, it feels like there would be some teams that will always overreact
02:49and probably overpay and look to help the Cardinals here by getting him.
02:54And to his credit, I mean, remember when he first came in with the Dodgers?
02:59I mean, there was some hype around him in a big, big way.
03:02Did some injuries.
03:04Had to kind of change his philosophy, where he was going, what he was doing.
03:08Didn't work out.
03:08And then he comes to the Cardinals, and all of a sudden, I mean, my goodness.
03:12I mean, he's been one of the most steadiest pitchers that they have had.
03:16And that's going to get noticed by teams who are contending.
03:18They're going to have offers on him, are they not?
03:21Absolutely.
03:22Yeah, he's not a star.
03:23And he's not going to start game one of a playoff game or maybe even game two.
03:28But, you know, he's cheap in terms of money.
03:31And he seems like, look, he's not going eight innings.
03:34But he seems like a solid five-inning pitcher that can help you in the postseason chase.
03:40And if his ERA is around late threes, early fours, Joe, and he can stay healthy, he may be able
03:46to pitch in an ALCS or NLCS out of the bullpen or maybe even game four or game five.
03:50What's wrong with that?
03:51And that's a good point you mentioned.
03:52With the Dodgers, he was thought to be a superstar, right?
03:56Like, it was – I think, if I'm not mistaken, it was him as a pitcher.
03:59And remember, Gavin Lux.
04:00That was the hitter.
04:01They had those two guys that – those are the two guys that were going to carry them.
04:05And neither of them really worked out.
04:07I think Gavin Lux is actually in Tampa Bay.
04:08I don't think he's played much at all this year.
04:10But, yeah, I think it's hard because the Cardinals fans, Joe, they still show up at Bush.
04:17They have such a great fan base.
04:18And then now you're sending this message like, yeah, like it's over.
04:23This tarps off stuff.
04:24That's done.
04:25No one – you know, we're not having fun anymore here.
04:27I understand it, but it is the right baseball move because in that National League Central,
04:33and we certainly can look at the Cubs and Brewers, they're not going to beat those teams out.
04:37So it's just the wild card, Joe.
04:40And I don't think they're beating out the Cubs for the wild card.
04:44And I don't think they're beating – I'm going to still throw the Phillies out there.
04:47That's the American League Central, by the way, guys.
04:49I don't think they're beating the Phillies for the wild card.
04:53I think they'll get it going eventually.
04:55And then, Joe, it comes down to do you think the Cardinals are better than the Marlins?
04:59Do you think they're better than the Padres?
05:01Do you think they're better than the Diamondbacks?
05:03I think all those three teams that I mentioned are better than St. Louis and Pittsburgh.
05:08So I think there's too many teams to climb for me.
