Willard and Dibs react to early injuries from 49ers training camp...
Transcript
00:00I want to shout out Nick Wagner from ESPN.
00:02He covers the Niners.
00:03He does something cool at the end of every practice.
00:06And he puts it out on Twitter.
00:08It's called Camp Observations.
00:10And it's just bullet points of all the things that he notices.
00:14Today's was, um, oof.
00:17Oof.
00:20He writes, new injuries to list.
00:24Wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with his right knee did not practice
00:28and the Niners are concerned.
00:30They're exploring all options, which presumably includes surgical options.
00:36A tough early blow for Pearsall, who is entering an important third season.
00:42Safety Malik Mustafa's got a hamstring strain.
00:45Also unfortunate, he's in an apparent competition with Marquis Siegel
00:50for his starting safety job.
00:52And, as feared on Monday.
00:56Grandy, this is where you should lean in.
00:58And I know you already know this.
00:59But, um, running back Jordan James does have an injury.
01:04It's a rib fracture that will cost him some time.
01:10Mind you, the 49ers have not had a practice with pads yet.
01:13Right.
01:14And we got people breaking ribs.
01:17Just, I have questions.
01:19I wonder how that happened.
01:20Yep.
01:21But anyway.
01:22Um.
01:23Really quick, there is a circulating theory going on on Twitter that I've seen.
01:27There's a video that the Niners put out of Fred Warner being fired up.
01:32Okay.
01:33And, uh, they're not, not pads on, as you mentioned, but Jordan James is carrying the ball and Fred
01:37Warner's trying to wrap him up, but they're not tackling.
01:40And Fred Warner tries to punch the ball.
01:43And there's a, a, a theory online that maybe that's where Jordan James got hurt.
01:47Well.
01:48And that came on Monday, right?
01:49And I've seen that theory because also there's a report that Fred today at practice was sort
01:55of air pumping the ball out.
01:59In other words, not fully following through with it, which was hard for him apparently because
02:04that's what he does.
02:05That's what he does in practice and he wasn't doing it today, which I think then sort of
02:11lends credence to what you're saying, Grandy, because if you hurt somebody doing it, you
02:16would not do it again the next day.
02:19And so anyway, Jordan James got a rib fracture.
02:23Um, they loved what they saw from him in OTAs and the start to camp.
02:28Um, but now this opens the door for Kalon Black, the rookie running back that the 49ers
02:35selected in the draft, who they are also apparently very excited about.
02:38They've liked what they've seen from him.
02:40Yeah.
02:40And you know that I've said this a bunch of times.
02:43I think the backup running back spot for me, one of the most interesting spots in camp
02:47this year for the 49ers.
02:49But got a lot less interesting with Jordan James having a fractured rib and who knows
02:54how long that will cost him.
02:56I don't know how bad the fracture is, but yeah, you were hoping to see those two really
03:00battling, maybe they both look so good that they both get a chance to take some carries
03:05away from Christian McCaffrey, who towed the rock and caught the ball last year, far more
03:10than people would have wanted.
03:12And certainly when you look at this year and he's coming off 450 touches in the regular
03:17and the post season last year, you want that to go down.
03:20And I thought Jordan James was a perfect guy to, to kind of take that load off because he
03:25was here last year.
03:26Nick also writes, there is a whole lot of opportunity right now for wide receivers who
03:32are already on the roster and healthy.
03:35The Niners did bring in three more wide receivers for a workout today.
03:39Their names you probably don't know, but they did that.
03:42But the implication he's talking about with Christian Kirk already having a calf strain,
03:48Ricky Pearsall now with a bulky knee and some problems going on there.
03:53It opens the door, the door back up for the likes of Demarcus Robinson.
03:58And then the second year guy, Jordan Watkins.
04:02Don't forget Jacob Cowling.
04:05And then of course, Dajon Stribling, who is wowing people at camp.
04:13It's just camp, but they're loving everything that they're seeing from Stribling.
04:17And just quickly with the way this camp has started with Mike Evans at his age, Ricky
04:23Pearsall and his issues, a calf strain.
04:26And I don't know if you've heard, calves are tricky.
04:28Yes.
04:29It's getting in just three or four days time.
04:33It's getting hard to imagine Stribling not potentially having a large role to start the
04:36season, provided that he can stay healthy.
04:38Right.
04:39And you knock on wood and you hope that, you know, he's able to make it through camp.
04:43And the whole thing about Ricky Pearsall, just, I heard the news earlier today and I
04:47thought, God, why didn't, if he had a PCL issue, why didn't he just have surgery last
04:53year?
04:53And so, you know, me, I'm a wannabe doctor.
04:56I'm a radio doctor.
04:57And so I started doing the dive on the PCL because I don't know the PCL like I know the
05:02other CLs.
05:03Like the ACL, the ACL, you tear it, you repair it.
05:07The M, same thing.
05:09The L is a very rare one, the LCL.
05:12So I was learning about the PCL today.
05:13Okay.
05:13Before you dive into what you learned, I, I'd love to know, what do you want to be more
05:19other than a radio host?
05:21Is it indeed a doctor?
05:24Is it a referee or is it a police officer?
05:28Which do you see yourself more as other than a radio host?
05:33Not a police officer.
05:34Well, you've moonlit us all of them on this show.
05:36What I'm interested in more than that is the forensics part of a police officer.
05:41I don't want to be an actual police officer, but the investigation sensation part of it,
05:47that is what is interesting to me.
05:49Did you used to watch CSI?
05:51No.
05:52Okay.
05:52So Kyle Shannon gets in a car accident and we find out 11 days later about it.
05:56And I have questions and I would love to be able to get those answers.
06:00And I don't think that I will, and I won't spend my free time doing it, but that part
06:04of it is interesting to me.
06:06The investigation, not the, uh, you know, put your hands up, you know, hold it right
06:11there, mister.
06:12No, I don't want to be a police officer.
06:14The answer though, is referee, then doctor and doctor.
06:18And the internet is really undefeated when it comes to learning about these things.
06:22And so today I learned about the PCL, um, somebody on the text line wants to know what
06:26about crowd work comedian?
06:28Yeah, I've done it.
06:29Like the warmup comedian, but crowd work, like crowd work, crowd work.
06:34Comedian means like a comedian who doesn't necessarily go out there with a bit.
06:38They don't go out there with their own sort of material and script.
06:41They just start talking to the audience and they do crowd work and you start making fun
06:46of people based on what you see and what they say back.
06:49And, um, there's a lot of comedians who kind of almost thumb their nose at it a little
06:53bit.
06:54Like it's not as sexy of a process, but there are comedians who've made a living out.
06:59Have you ever heard of Matt Reif?
07:00No.
07:01Okay.
07:01Matt Reif is a younger comedian.
07:02It's literally all he does.
07:04I don't know if he's got any material.
07:05He just walks out there, starts talking to everybody, does a whole 90 minute set.
07:11Anyway, go ahead.
07:12I mean, I'm sure he goes out there with material, but maybe a backup, but material.
07:17Like if somebody is looking like this or says this, then I'm, I'm going to have this
07:21retort.
07:21Like you have that stuff built in maybe or not.
07:24I mean, quick.
07:25Yeah.
07:25You don't know what the hell's going to be out there, but anyway, go ahead.
07:28I'd love to do that.
07:28But I mean, it's a little late to get started, but my PCL research.
07:32Don't give up.
07:32So you tear your PCL and even if it's a bad tear, you usually don't get surgery.
07:39You usually give it time.
07:41You let it heal.
07:42Last year, I think he missed about eight games or so before he came back with his torn PCL.
07:48I don't know how severe it was.
07:50And then he actually was able to play in one playoff game, one of the two, and then you
07:55get to the off season.
07:56And again, with the PCL, you don't automatically get surgery, but then this happens.
08:02And I was learning about this more today while Mark Spears was giving one of his answers.
08:06And you were looking at if he has this swelling and what they call laxity.
08:12And I'm not sure if he has laxity, which is looseness.
08:15If you have an injury, you give it time, you come back and then you get swelling and laxity.
08:21That's when you start thinking about surgery.
08:24And so the fact that he has this swelling like a couple days into camp and maybe it's
08:29a little bit loose.
08:30If that is the reality after what happened last year, he might just get shut down.
08:36PCL surgery, you're out for six to nine months.
08:39PCL surgery is six to nine months?
08:41It's, I mean, from what I was reading, it's like a six month recovery.
08:46So yeah, that.
08:49Oh yeah.
08:50Yeah.
08:50I'm not saying that he needs it, but if they're concerned and swelling is a thing, right?
08:56Like his knee.
08:57Swelling is a thing.
08:58His knee is swollen up.
08:59Nick wrote, presumably they're looking at surgical options on the table.
09:04Right.
09:05Among the options.
09:08Not good.
09:09No, not good at all.
09:10Not good at all.
09:11I'm just reading.
09:12It says, uh, take six to 12 months to recover from a PCL surgery.
09:18And this is not involving other ligaments.
09:21Cause sometimes like whatever you tear the ACL or like the PCL is usually from a car accident.
09:27And if this is the situation he's facing, then God, you feel so bad for him because this
09:33is year three and he's got one more year.
09:36It's a massive year.
09:37It's a massive year.
09:39It's kind of look, they, they spent their first pick on a wide receiver.
09:43Again, um, the implication, and I know that Pearsall and Stribling are different types of
09:49players.
09:50Um, and yes, you need more than one receiver.
09:53Um, but you sort of, I think you go into this year kind of feeling, hoping that Ricky
10:00Pearsall can signal to the organization and the world that he can hold down one of the
10:05starting spots going forward.
10:06And if he were to miss significant time, or as you're suggesting, who knows, this could
10:11lead even to, to missing the whole year, uh, you wonder if the Niners just don't start
10:15thinking about moving on.
10:17Right.
10:17I mean, he, he has one more year under his rookie contract and a fifth year option that
10:22they would obviously not pick up.
10:25Well, unless he, yeah, they wouldn't pick it up before next year.
10:29Right.
10:29I mean, if, if he has surgery and he misses this whole year, I can't imagine them even
10:34having him around for the fourth year.
10:35Oh, I mean, well, it's cheap.
10:37I don't know why you would, you know what I mean?
10:38Like, yeah, he could have a great fourth year.
10:40But that, this is that, this would be a, that'd be a disaster.
