Willard and Dibs run through all the players that are currently on IR. How many of these guys will return this season?
Transcript
00:00Someone texted in and asked a fun question.
00:02Do you still have that deal up with all the Niner players on IR?
00:05Do you have that in front of you?
00:07Yeah, I can bring that right back up.
00:09Okay, so 559, thank you for listening and texting in.
00:13Hey guys, can you go through that list of players on IR
00:18and suss out the eight that might come back?
00:22And maybe there aren't eight at all.
00:25Maybe we haven't arrived at that yet.
00:27But it feels like we'll be getting close.
00:31Do you have the list?
00:32Yeah, as I bring it up, we can play keeper cut with it if you want.
00:36I was even thinking like, name that injury.
00:39Because some of these, you know, you kind of start to forget.
00:42But we'll start with the most recent one, which is CJ West.
00:45And I don't know if he's officially been put on IR.
00:48I don't think so yet, but he's going there.
00:51Dijon Stribling, we know.
00:52So those are both yeses, by the way.
00:55On will they return?
00:56Or I would hope to designate them to return.
01:00I think you're right on those.
01:01I don't even know.
01:02Has Stribling been officially placed on IR yet?
01:05I don't believe so.
01:06He keeps showing up on the injury report, which tells me he's not on IR.
01:10Yeah, I know as of last Friday when the injury report for week two came out,
01:15he was listed as out, so not on IR.
01:17ESPN is saying that he got placed on Saturday.
01:20Maybe.
01:20So I'd have to check all my Niner emails.
01:24ESPN does have the little IR next to his name.
01:27Okay.
01:27Jake Tonjes will not return.
01:29Jake Tonjes is a no.
01:30Alfred Collins with the knee.
01:32He's out for the year.
01:34Nate Hobbs, the coroner, will return.
01:36That's a yes.
01:37So there's three.
01:38Sam Okawano, foot surgery.
01:40I think he's going to be.
01:41That's a hopeful, but let's kick the can down the road there.
01:45Nick Martin with the hammy.
01:46That's probably a yes.
01:48That's four.
01:49Nick Zakel with undisclosed.
01:52Oh, that's the worst kind of injury.
01:54Yeah, so I think he's a maybe.
01:56That's a no.
01:59That's a maybe we don't care.
02:01Brett Toth had a concussion in the end of August.
02:03He's on IR.
02:04Yeah.
02:04I think that those are, we go get those emergency break glass, right?
02:10Like if the offensive line stays relatively healthy, those guys are not going to return.
02:14But anyway, okay.
02:15So I got four for sure.
02:16Christian Kirk.
02:17That's a yes.
02:18That's five.
02:18And I believe he counts because he got put on IR during week one.
02:22It was before the actual game, but because the season had started.
02:26Yes.
02:27I think he counts.
02:29Garendo's on Pup.
02:30That doesn't count.
02:31Austin Pleasant is on IR.
02:34So pending.
02:34What's the injury?
02:37Knee.
02:38Okay.
02:38That's a probably yes, but a maybe.
02:40But if we said yes, that's six.
02:42And I already know you haven't even mentioned Demarcus Robinson yet, which is seven.
02:46And Pearsall's out for the year.
02:48Pearsall's gone for the year.
02:49Mikael Kamara.
02:51No.
02:52Andrew Farmer, the second.
02:54Derek Forrest.
02:55You're not, you're just making up names.
02:56No, I'm really not.
02:57You're just reading your high school yearbook.
02:59Mikael Williams is on Pup, so he doesn't count.
03:01That does not count.
03:01Right.
03:02So I'm just trying to think if there's anybody else I missed.
03:05And I think Demarcus Robinson is still listed as out.
03:08He's not yet on IR.
03:09He hasn't been placed on IR.
03:10But he will.
03:10But a candidate.
03:12Right.
03:12I think he's going on IR.
03:13So that's a clean seven to return right there.
03:16And it's week two.
03:17Yep.
03:18And it's week two.
03:19Yeah.
03:20Well, to be designated to return, you need the time to do so.
03:24And actually return.
03:25Yeah.
03:25The guys that get hurt week 13 don't come back because there's not enough time.
03:29But the point is you don't want to designate seven of those people to return now because
03:33who knows who's going to get hurt a week, two weeks, three weeks from now.
03:36You need to save some spots.
03:37Right.
03:38But as Dib said, it's not an official designated to return until you return.
03:41So you can just have them not come back.
03:44Right.
03:44But that sucks because those are all guys you.
03:46So Pleasance, that's a maybe.
03:48He is a little bit of their swing tackle guy.
03:51And the backup, like, certainly.
03:54Like, they're going to need him if McKivitts or if Trent Williams were to miss some time.
04:01But, yeah, there's at least five or six that are no doubter yeses.
04:05Right.
04:06You know?
04:06You're talking Stribling and Robinson.
04:08Well, Stribling's an interesting one.
04:09I think he's a 95% yes.
04:12But it feels to me like there's a little bit of let's see if he's ready to come back.
04:19I mean, when you tell me 10 weeks-ish, then that tells, like, I don't know.
04:25What if you get to week 13 or week 14 and it's like, ah, either he's ready or he's not
04:33quite ready
04:34or do we need him?
04:35Like, what else is going on at that point?
04:38Christian Kirk's back.
04:39Demarcus Robinson's back.
04:41Mike Evans is playing.
04:42Debo Samuel's playing.
04:43Whatever.
04:43Like, I don't, you know, yes, I'd love to have Stribling.
04:46But there is a world where he doesn't play until next year.
04:51Of course.
04:52Possible.
04:52It depends on what's going on and, you know, who's healthy and how healthy is he and all the rest
04:57of it.
04:57And it kind of plays into our warrior conversation in the crossover about, you know, what's Steph going to want
05:02to do?
05:02Well, we have to wait on Jimmy and Moses and see if Chris Stapps and Steph and Drayvon, how are
05:07they all doing?
05:07And I think it's the same here with Stribling and a lot of these guys.
05:11You expect the Niners to still be good and relevant by the time Stribling is ready in, I don't know,
05:16mid-November.
05:17Let's ballpark it.
05:18If they're 9-3, well, yeah, you probably want him back.
05:22Yeah, he was going to be one of their starting receivers.
05:24They want him out there.
05:26And he's incredibly talented.
05:28And so, but we also know rookies at that position in the Kyle Shanahan system, like, look, I'm confident because
05:36he worked his way just in camp into being into a spot where Kyle already trusted him.
05:42So, I don't know if he falls under, like, how often have we heard Kyle say, oh, boy, for the
05:47rookies, you missed a little time there early.
05:49Jordan Lockett sets you back.
05:52But they had decided that Stribling was already ready to go.
05:55So, from a mental standpoint, I have to think Stribbs is already there.
06:00He's cooked and ready to come out of the oven.
06:04Now, from a physical standpoint, you know, what's the ramp up on the return to play and all of that?
06:10Is he physically all there?
06:13If he is, yeah, I got to assume he gets back out on the field there at the end of
06:17the year.
06:18You would hope.
06:18And if he's in the oven, unfortunately, he's a Thanksgiving turkey because it's going to be a while.
06:23You have to have that thing cook for, you know, another eight weeks probably or more.
06:28I failed to mention James Thompson, Jr., who is a candidate to go in the hour.
06:33He's got a high ankle also.
06:34Right.
06:35And yes, they would definitely want him back.
06:37Yes.
06:37And I think at this juncture, you don't have to do it this early in the week until you need
06:41to make those roster moves.
06:42And you're going to find out if, you know, when Naquan gets here, if he's not here already, how does
06:47he look?
06:48And can he be somebody who immediately gets plugged in?
06:50Because, as you mentioned, you've got to have some bodies.
06:53You've got two interior defensive linemen right now.
06:57And Shanahan said that, you know, you start with six and stuff, and now you're down to two.
07:01And so we're going to have to do some things and stuff.
07:02Yeah.
07:03Naquan is already listed on the ESPN depth chart right behind Osa.
07:07And you're right.
07:08There's nobody else on this roster right now.
07:11Sure, there are more people on the practice squad.
07:13There's no doubt.
07:14So we'll see who gets elevated.
07:15I also don't know of the other defensive linemen out there, you know, guys who are listed as an edge.
07:23Can they play on the interior?
07:24That's kind of like Mikel Williams was.
07:27That's a guy that's listed as an edge, but he can play on the interior.
07:31So I don't know about, you know, Okoronkwo and guys like that.
07:35I don't know.
07:36But, yeah, it is an incredibly thin group.
07:39Right now it's even thinner than wide receiver.
07:41Not even close.
07:42Yeah, which is hard to even imagine because you still have Daryl Hodge out there and you theoretically could have
07:48Jordan Watkins.
07:49And we'll get a practice report today maybe and see exactly what he might have done in terms of running
07:56around out there and maybe catching the ball.
07:58But even without Stribbling and without Robinson and without Pearsall, you still have some depth down there.
08:04Speaking of things being cooked, let's talk about the newest Niner.
08:09And that is Brandon Cooks, veteran receiver.
08:12Kyle Shanahan sounded very, very excited to have him in the building.
08:15I didn't know that he was a Stockton native.
08:20So this is probably pretty cool for him to come play for the 49ers.
08:24Here is Kyle Shanahan on Cooks.
08:27Just awesome to get a veteran receiver here.
08:29I mean, Brandon, I've been a fan of him for the last 10 years.
08:32He's had a hell of a career, been a hell of a player.
08:33And, you know, we're down on guys, so it's awesome to get a guy in here who's done it before
08:37and done it for a long time.
08:39He shared what his pitch was to Brandon to get him here.
08:42I mean, just showing him our situation.
08:44I mean, he knows that we're down guys, so he's going to have an opportunity to get up eventually.
08:48Tell him we'd give him a chance to come here.
08:50Show him what he can show.
08:51Let him show us what he can do.
08:53Give him a chance to compete to get up.
08:54Today will be his first day, so he's got to learn the offense, get used to it out there.
08:58But hopefully he can show that over this week or over the next few weeks.
09:00Okay, and when could he be ready to go?
09:04I have no idea.
09:05It's only the first day seeing him, so I'm not sure.
09:08But we're down guys, so as soon as he's ready, as soon as he, you know, we usually get five
09:12guys up for game day.
09:13So as soon as he can show he's one of those five.
09:15Okay.
09:16So the race is on.
09:18And this is a little side story that I think everybody should watch this week.
09:23And to me, if Brandon Cooks beats Jordan Watkins to the active roster this week, it, to me, signals that
09:32Watkins is not in the plans.
09:34Cue up your Nick Friedle sound.
09:35Uh-oh.
09:36Uh-oh.
09:37Yeah.
09:37Absolutely.
09:38And if he doesn't, then that means Cooks, you know, physically is still getting up to speed and that Watkins
09:45will have a chance to go out there and do some things.
09:49And maybe Cowing as well.
09:51Selfishly, although I don't know why, like I'm, you know, I got no dog in this fight.
09:55I really hope that Watkins is one of the five actives this weekend, the others being Mike Evans and Debo
10:04Samuel and Cowing, who will return punts, and Kaderil Hodge, who also has a special teams role.
10:09Watkins, I certainly hope, is that fifth because he's homegrown and they were excited about him last year.
10:13If he's not, then if somebody can come in off the street on a Wednesday and beat you to the
10:19active roster on a Sunday, that is a terrible sign.
10:22Troubling is what that is.
10:24And I'm just thinking about the five eligibles at times when you're out there and you'll have Debo and Evans.
10:30Evans, questionable, questionable concern, as always.
10:33And so if you've got Debo and Evans and you've got Juice, McCaffrey, and Kittle as your five eligibles on
10:39offense, well, you're doing just fine.
10:41Yeah, you're fine.
10:42Your depth pieces maybe aren't as thrilling, although, you know, you love Kalon Black as your backup running back.
10:47And so it really is when you get to wide receiver three and four and five, that's where things might
10:52get a little dicey in the short term.
10:54No doubt.
10:54No doubt.
10:55And obviously the dicey part of this is looking the other way.
10:58I know a lot of people don't get scared by the Cardinals offense, but they have NFL players.
11:03Jacoby Brissett is a professional.
11:06Trey McBride is a problem.
11:07Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw, and Trey McBride.
11:12Let's get your popcorn ready.
11:14Get your popcorn ready this weekend for that one.
11:16I think Jaden Duggar, too.
11:18You know, when you start to match up size on size and Upton Stout, I think, can do it out
11:23of the slot.
11:24But that's a little bit of a size mismatch because McBride's a big dude.
11:27He is a monstrous human.
11:29He is a great player.
11:30Great player.
11:31Great catcher of the football.
11:33Good route runner.
11:33He's physical.
11:34So that's going to be your number one concern.
11:37But he could be terrified to be here.
11:40Trey McBride was the one at the Super Bowl who publicly said, I would never want to play for the
11:4649ers practicing next to all of that hijinks next door with your crazy substation.
11:53Not me.
11:53Well, you're going to play there this week, right?
11:57Yeah.
11:57And it's pretty close.
11:59And I believe that the Cardinals sideline is on that side of the field because aren't the Niners?
12:04Isn't their sideline?
12:05The Niners on the press box side of the field.
12:08Yes.
12:09These are things that Grandi always notices.
12:10That is correct.
12:11I usually just throw something out and either get the ding or the buzzer.
12:14And so the shady side.
12:16Yep.
12:16Correct.
12:16DeMundo.
12:17So Arizona's even the width of the football field closer to.
12:22Yep.
12:22Shady.
12:23That's exactly what Trey McBride calls the entire organization.
12:26No doubt about it.
12:27He didn't want any part of this.
12:29Yep.
12:29So we'll see if he even shows up.
12:30Niners also, by the way, added Viliami Fejoco Jr.
12:35Glad you said it, not me.
12:36Out of.
12:36He grew up in Stanford, went to San Jose State, went to St. Francis High School.
12:41So this feels more like a true practice squatter.
12:44Maybe Sebastian Valdez gets brought up.
12:47And, you know, you're going to have to find other really large human beings.
12:50People.
12:51Yes.
12:51There needs to be people.
12:52People in uniforms.
12:54Who are at least 280 who like to tackle other human beings.
12:59It's not ideal, Mark.
13:00It's not ideal.
13:02It's not ideal.
13:04Jeremiah Love and Tyler Algier coming at you.
13:08Right.
13:09Coming at you.
13:10And, you know, this is where game plans.
13:12I know that when you look at it on paper, it's like, all right,
13:15the way the Niner offense is buzzing right now, they're going to score.
13:19But we don't need to tell you this.
13:22The 49er game plan, as always, is to whack people in the face and get a lead.
13:30And I know the Rams had a four-point lead and blah, blah, blah.
13:33But, like, if the Cardinals have some success running that football up the middle and moving
13:41the chains and they get on the board early, it can mess with a game plan.
13:46So, this one's a little scarier than last week.
13:48There's no doubt.
13:49I think so.
13:49And, you know, even if you look at what Arizona does offensively, and we talked about them
13:53not throwing to the receivers a lot other than Wilson and Bourne, Arizona's going to
13:57try to do what the Niners want to do, which is controlled on the ground.
14:01Niners haven't been spectacular against the run.
14:05So, you know, you go back to the Miami game where they held the ball for, what, seven minutes
14:09and then missed a field goal?
14:11If Arizona's able to possess it and, like you said, get the lead, that's the recipe to beat
14:16Shanahan-led teams.
14:17Want one more from Shanahan?
14:19Oh, yeah.
14:19I'd love for you to guess the answer before he says it.
14:24The question was, what part of Purdy's game do you appreciate the most?
14:31What do you think he said?
14:33Well, all of it and stuff.
14:35No.
14:35What part does he appreciate the most?
14:38What part of Purdy's game do you appreciate the most?
14:41It could be the anticipation.
14:42Yep.
14:43It could be the layering.
14:44It could be the footwork.
14:47It could be the processing.
14:50It could be the leadership.
14:52It could be that rocket arm.
14:54Nah.
14:56It could be, I don't know, other.
14:59Well, I think it's probably just the way he sees it and stuff.
15:01I mean, he puts in the work and then when he gets out there and he takes a look at
15:05the
15:05defense and stuff and he sees what they're trying to do and it's probably that.
15:09Here's Kyle.
15:10The mental part of his game is just how consistent he is.
15:12He never makes an excuse.
15:15He always believes it's his fault.
15:18He's such an easy guy to coach.
15:20He'll never be sensitive.
15:22He'll never, even when I don't think it's his fault, he looks at it as his fault first,
15:26which makes him just fun to coach and always able to get better and just physically on the field.
15:31I'll just, I'd say there's lots of traits he has, but how accurate he is, how good he
15:35is at layering the balls over defenders and how well he plays in the pocket.
15:39Okay.
15:39So he started with the mental game.
15:41Yep.
15:41But then he did talk about layering and accuracy.
15:45Good traits?
15:46There's no doubt.
15:46And I did the deep dive in the whole Kurt Warner YouTube show that he does and he spent about
15:53a half an hour just heaping praise on Brock.
15:56He did a whole like Rex Ryan thing talking about his feet.
15:59He also, well, he went on the Rich Eisen show.
16:02Yeah.
16:02Which is what led me to his quarterback confidential.
16:05If y'all want to hear that, here's Kurt Warner on the Rich Eisen show on Brock Purdy.
16:10I guess one has to be Brock Purdy.
16:13You know, Brock's playing really, really good football.
16:16The thing about Brock is, again, we're never going to talk about him like Allen and Mahomes
16:21simply from, you know, what we can see in the tangible things that, you know, Brock brings
16:26a lot to the table, but it's not being 6'4", and it's not a cannon arm.
16:31He brings so much to the table in terms of playing the position and being able to set
16:35his feet, being able to throw with anticipation, understanding how to throw with touch when he
16:40needs to, getting through the processing part of it really, really quickly.
16:44It doesn't look like wow to most people.
16:47Most people are like, oh, anybody in the league could make that throw.
16:49But it's how he does it, and the consistency by which he does it, that makes him unique
16:55and special.
16:55I think I saw a stat the other day that, you know, in the first five years of their
16:59career, nobody has more 140-plus quarterback rating games than Brock Purdy.
17:05And that's who he is, is that he's going to be consistently good.
17:10He fits that style.
17:11He's going to make plays for you above and beyond the X and O's, even though, again,
17:15it may not look as special as some of the other guys.
17:19But the president of Brockistan is happy.
17:21You should be.
17:22Yep, yep.
17:23Lots and lots of quarterbacks out in the content world just painting all kinds of compliments
17:35all over the place, wherever they can, about Brock Purdy.
17:38And that is your ambassador of Kwon right there, or your ambassador of Brock, because I watched
17:44the whole 30 minutes.
17:45He's talking about Brock popping his feet, and every time he goes from the right to look
17:49left, he turns his head and the feet go boop, and his feet are perfectly aligned, and the
17:53way he climbs the pocket, and oh, the layered throws, and the whole thing.
17:57It was a 30-minute gush fest.
18:00You should watch it in the privacy of your own home.
18:03Oh, I do have some time tonight.
18:06I think you'd like it.
