Willard and Dibs react to the news that Nick Bosa injured his calf while warming up for yesterday's practice. What is going on here with the 49ers and the defensive line?
Transcript
00:01I wish I could really tell you your comment from the summit just to get people riled up again.
00:05Yeah, do it.
00:06Whatever, that was like, how many days ago? 15 days ago?
00:09Yeah, that was the one thing that Stiney didn't do exactly as I would have hoped in his wonderful defense
00:17of me.
00:17And so, Stiney, I love you, appreciate it.
00:20But he was like, Willard made those comments a few days ago.
00:23I was like, no, it was way more than a few days ago.
00:26I wouldn't have said it a few days ago.
00:29No, this was a full week before the Niners played in Australia.
00:35Alfred Collins hadn't even gotten hurt yet.
00:39There was no Alfred Collins injury.
00:41There was no Dajon Stribling injury.
00:43There was no Mick Bosa injury.
00:46Who am I forgetting?
00:47Keep coming with me here.
00:49You say C.J. West or Demarcus Robinson?
00:51There was no Demarcus Robinson.
00:53There was no C.J. West.
00:54There was no James Thompson.
00:55There was none of that.
00:56Right.
00:57There was none of that.
00:57It was September 3rd at Jack's Restaurant and Bar in Pleasant Hill.
01:01And so, my comment at that time, in fact, I don't even think there was a Sam O injury yet.
01:06Right.
01:06My comment at that time was the Niner injury report for Australia was two people.
01:12And, obviously, we had already received the Ricky Pearsall word weeks before that.
01:18George Kittle and Nick Bosa were both on the plane.
01:21And they were going to play, and they did.
01:23And I was like, I don't know after this summer how you could have even imagined it looking this good.
01:30And then all of the Niner ring happened since then.
01:33So, I get that.
01:35But, that is a gut punch.
01:39There's no two ways about it.
01:41And I think...
01:42It's a huge gut punch.
01:43The other injuries have been, like, the scribbling was a right hook to the head.
01:46Yes.
01:47And then the other ones were kind of, you know, snap the jab, snap the jab.
01:49And then this one is, it's the uppercut.
01:51And you're knocked down, but you're not knocked out.
01:54No.
01:54It's week three.
01:55But this is kind of a bit of a knockout punch because your IR is so full.
02:00You don't have room to just play it safe.
02:03And you're going to wait four games.
02:04You kind of have to just let somebody linger on the roster because you don't have enough room.
02:10Exactly.
02:10So, you've got to fill in for people, but you can't create the roster spot to do so.
02:16That's all.
02:17Right.
02:17Figure that math equation out.
02:19Just, you know, you're going to be down a man, essentially.
02:21Yeah.
02:21It was September 3rd, the summit.
02:23Okawana got hurt on the 7th.
02:25Collins on the 10th.
02:26Tongis the 16th.
02:27Oh, forgot Jake.
02:28Yeah.
02:29Stribbling on the 19th.
02:30Jack Jones is questionable as of the 20th.
02:33And then you get Robinson and Thompson on the 21st.
02:36CJ West the 23rd.
02:37And then Romello Height.
02:39And then you throw in Nick Bosa.
02:42Yeah.
02:42And this isn't about my comments from two weeks ago or three weeks ago or whatever.
02:47It's not about that.
02:48This is about Nick Bosa and what this means for the 49ers in the near term and what this
02:54means for the 49ers in the long term.
02:56I think both of those are completely fair conversations.
03:00And Niner fans, we're here to talk this out.
03:03We're going to, you know, we'll have Kyle's comments again here in about 15 minutes.
03:06I think it's important to continue to play those because that way you can hear both the
03:11tone of his voice, but also the words that he says.
03:15But Nick Bosa is expected to be out a few weeks.
03:19You heard Kyle Shanahan say one of the problems with the whole IR thing is not just that they're
03:25overloaded with people on IR designation to return, but that they're all right now sort
03:32of expected to be about the same length of time out.
03:35And all of them are right around what the IR rules state.
03:39You go on IR, you have to miss at least four football games.
03:43Demarcus Robinson, James Thompson Jr. both have high ankle sprains.
03:47Those are about four weeks-ish.
03:50Sometimes that can linger a little bit.
03:52Five, six weeks.
03:53Sounds like that's kind of what they're saying about Nick Bosa too.
03:57Plus it's week three and you have a week eight bye.
03:59So factor that into the whole, like if you're going to miss four or five games, maybe just
04:05grab another week and actually take the week eight bye as well and come back by week nine.
04:10If I sit here and look at this now, that's the really positive way to look at it.
04:15You could say after Seattle, you have more games on the schedule that look very winnable
04:21and then you get a bye.
04:22And a lot of these guys should be healthy by week nine, but I'm not going to sugarcoat this
04:26either because I think every 49er fan out there gets that this injury comes with extra
04:34juice and sorry, Kyle, I'm not talking about you in this case, right?
04:38This comes with a lot of extra juice for two reasons.
04:41A we've been triggered to know that when Nick Bosa's gone, the pass rush goes away entirely
04:48and B, because of Nick's history now with his legs, there is justifiably very little confidence
04:57that he's going to come back and have long, healthy stretches maybe ever again.
05:02Well, and the PTSD is from last year where he wasn't there and you had, was it 20 sacks
05:08the entire year?
05:09You could not sack the quarterback.
05:11And so that was a byproduct of mainly not having Nick Bosa until here you are and you've
05:17got Jacoby Brissett, who is a good passer when he has time.
05:21He's not elite, but he's good when you pressure him.
05:23He's really subpar a little bit like Jordan Love last night, who was God awful.
05:27We'll get to that later.
05:28So if you aren't able to get Brissett off the spot and they're really good at running
05:32it and you're not good at running it, that sets up a little bit of a dangerous concoction
05:37for your past defense.
05:38It's a dangerous concoction from the perspective of, we know that part of Kyle Shanahan's game
05:43plan is to try to punch you in the mouth early and get a lead.
05:46And then, you know, you can pin your ears back on defense and then you can stay really,
05:51really balanced on offense.
05:53That's part of the game plan.
05:54And I would still say this, there are not just the obvious, the analytics of this weekend's
06:00game will suggest that the 49ers should score when they touch the ball.
06:03Yes.
06:04Period.
06:05Period.
06:06Well, beyond the analytics, if you look at their depth chart, they've got three corners
06:10who are out, including last year's second round pick.
06:13So the corners are out, they're injured, but also specifically what Brock Purdy and the
06:17Niner offense does really well, the Arizona defense does really poorly.
06:22More on that later on.
06:24And I can further explain what I mean by that.
06:26But the Niner offense should have a great day.
06:29But you never know.
06:30Ball bounces off of a defensive lineman's helmet, goes straight up in the air, somebody
06:34picks it off.
06:35Short field, 7-0 Cardinals.
06:37Like these things, like hello, you had the Packers minus 4.5 last night.
06:42They got blown off of their own field.
06:45Well, they're up 7-0.
06:46Weird crap happens in football, is my point.
06:49Weird stuff happens.
06:51Also, teams that are maybe not as good as you thought, they go on the road with their
06:57backs to the wall and they play great and the other team stinks.
06:59And it's a division game.
07:01And I think traditionally, at least in recent years, the Cardinals have come in and given
07:05the Niners a game.
07:06Right.
07:06If you look at the strengths against weakness, they match up for the Niners offense and the
07:11Cardinal defense.
07:12But strengths against weakness, Cardinal run game against the 49ers run defense.
07:17And I know the cards are more than that, but they can run the ball.
07:20The Niners have had a hard time, especially on first down, stopping the run.
07:24They have, although their run defense is less affected by today's news, obviously, than
07:28their pass rush.
07:30Also, Digizua, Grayson Halton, and others there in the interior.
07:34I know that they're not like run stuffers.
07:37They're more like interior pass rushers.
07:39That's their specialist.
07:40And they've been doing it really well.
07:41I will say this.
07:42And I think this is where we start.
07:44What does this mean for the next month of 49er football?
07:48And sort of now what you're expecting?
07:50Because it's been a wonderful PR two weeks for the Niners.
07:53Everyone thinks Brock is the best and the Niners are right there in the top three.
07:57That's sort of where everyone's power rankings and commentary sit.
08:01And with home games against Arizona and less so Denver, but Denver too, like the Niners
08:07will be plenty big favorites in both of those games and we're supposed to win.
08:12And then you got the Seattle game on the road.
08:15And, you know, how about this?
08:16If I offered you four and one right now after week five, how are you?
08:20Yeah.
08:20Or how are you feeling?
08:21Four and one after week five?
08:22I think I would take that.
08:24I was looking between now and the bye.
08:26And let's just assume that, you know, they're really conservative with all these guys who
08:30are in that three to six week range, right?
08:32Then if you don't bring any of them back, can you get through week seven at five and two,
08:38which would mean you go three and two over the next five.
08:40That to me is where I'm looking from a medium term look, which would be, you know, you lose
08:46at Seattle fine.
08:47Maybe you lose it.
08:48Rejuvenated Atlanta or you lose to Denver.
08:50Either way, you beat Arizona and Washington and you handle one of the other games.
08:55Yeah, I mean, I see where you're coming from.
08:57Five and two is a good record after seven weeks in the NFL and upset losses happen.
09:02They happen to everybody.
09:03So I'm not going to do as we love to talk about.
09:06I don't love schedule, Sam.
09:07I'm not going to sit here and tell you, well, they're going to win five weeks from now,
09:11you know, against the Washington commanders.
09:12I have no idea who's available.
09:14Is Jaden Daniels playing in that game?
09:15I have no idea who for the 49ers is healthy and has returned, who from the 49ers is hurt that
09:22we don't know about yet.
09:23Like there's too many variables going there.
09:26I still very firmly believe that the 49ers should win on Sunday without Nick Bosa.
09:34Well, the third is still at eight and a half.
09:36It didn't move.
09:36It didn't move.
09:37And it usually only moves with the quarterback.
09:39But I think when we look at this game without Nick Bosa, it lends itself to be more of a
09:45two-way shootout.
09:46Not that Nick is a one-man wrecking crew, but I think that Arizona has things that they can
09:52do that will make the 49ers somewhat defensively uncomfortable.
09:56I would look at the over if I was somebody in the wagering game.
10:00I hear where you're coming from, but let me counter with this.
10:02I don't think the Niner defense minus Nick Bosa this year will look like the 49er defense
10:11minus Nick Bosa last year.
10:13That's what I want to say.
10:16Interesting.
10:16I think it will be better.
10:17I think that there are pieces that we're leaving out of the conversation.
10:22I'm not just specifically talking about the pass rush, but I'm talking about a secondary
10:29that feels more comfortable playing at a higher level.
10:32Raheem Morris does more in the aggression category to try to fool quarterbacks and come
10:38after them.
10:39And flat out, just the presence of someone like Osa Odigizua, to me, makes that 49er defensive
10:46line and pass rush better this year without Nick than it was last year.
10:52I don't think this is now just going to be 34 to 31.
10:57I don't think the Niners will look like that.
10:58Well, I thought, and I'll say this knowing that before the Bosa news came out, I was thinking
11:03this very thing.
11:04It's not only Bosa, but it's the rest of the guys in your D-line who are hurt.
11:07So now you're asking people who don't play a lot or practice squatters to come up because
11:12you need depth at that position.
11:14So Odigizua is not playing 90% of the snaps.
11:18He'll play his usual compliment.
11:19And the twos, who used to be threes, are going to come in.
11:23And the threes, who used to be fours, are going to come in.
11:25So my concern about a low scoring affair was already in place before the Bosa news.
11:30And that's totally fine.
11:31Yeah.
11:32Like, I'm not saying you're wrong.
11:33One thing I've learned doing this show, Dan Dibley can pick again.
11:36I mean, stretches.
11:38Last year, there was a stretch that was so hot you had to bring in an odds maker.
11:41But yes, if you don't listen at $4.48 and fade the dibber.
11:46You're just costing yourself money.
11:47Seriously.
11:48You're costing yourself money.
11:48If you're not listening, do me a favor.
11:50Go in your wallet right now.
11:51If you have cash still, if you're old like us, wad up a $20 bill and just throw it out
11:55the window.
11:56You're just throwing money away by not fading the dibber.
11:58I mean, it can be a larger amount than $20.
12:01I know, but I'm not trying to.
12:031-800-GAMBLER if you have a problem.
12:05If you have anything.
12:06Or 1-800-BET-BET-BET.
12:08You don't do that anymore.
12:10That was one of my favorites early.
12:11On my message phone.
12:111-800-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET-BET.
12:13That was one of my favorite early bits you did.
12:16888-957-9570.
12:19It sucks.
12:21It sucks.
12:23And, you know, I don't know if everybody's mind goes to, again, something's fishy here.
12:29Here we go again with the Niners.
12:30or if you just one by one receive these.
12:35And this is, for me, this is more about Nick than it is about the Niners.
12:39For me, this is more about Nick.
12:41And there are concerns there.
