00:0049ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was in a serious car accident that will keep him from fully coaching at the
00:05start of training camp.
00:07Notably, it was not reported until 11 days after the accident took place.
00:14Here's 49ers general manager John Lynch discussing the situation.
00:19Kyle is doing good. He's got some bumps and bruises.
00:22He did suffer a concussion in the accident.
00:27And it has some lingering effects from that concussion.
00:33And, you know, we're kind of treating this.
00:36We don't have a protocol for staff members when it comes to concussions, but we do with players and it's
00:42become very helpful.
00:44So Kyle basically is going to be like in the protocol.
00:48I want to start out by saying I'm glad that Kyle Shanahan is alive.
00:53I'm glad for all intents and purposes that he's OK.
00:56The details, as reported by the California Post, on the accident and the severity of the Shanahan situation and the
01:05concussion that John Lynch just talked about and all the injuries to the face and the ribs and everything that
01:11transpired and bleeding from his head.
01:13It was gory and grotesque and obviously not what you want if you're Kyle Shanahan.
01:21And I'm just happy that he's OK and he's still with us.
01:24It was that kind of car accident.
01:26Now, I do think, obviously, when we talk about the delay for Kyle Shanahan and the reporting on it, and
01:33listen, I think that someone like Shanahan, who I've had on my Sirius XM radio show before and I've talked
01:41about on numerous occasions, I think he is one of the best coaches in the National Football League.
01:49And, you know, frankly, I've interviewed Kyle a few times.
01:53I used to interview his dad, Mike, every single year when he was coaching the Denver Broncos.
01:57So I've known the Shanahan family for a long time.
02:00So I can't speak, and I didn't know about this until the story broke over the weekend and the California
02:07Post has been all over it, and obviously the Niners delayed the reporting on the story and controlled the situation.
02:15And I think that I can speak to this portion of it.
02:19When you are a phenomenal coach, when you treat people the right way, I think when it comes to something
02:26that is personal in nature, there will be grace in terms of how something is reported and time frame.
02:34Now, am I surprised, knowing what we know now, that it took this long?
02:40Yes.
02:41Yes, I am.
02:42Am I surprised that San Francisco delayed it, and as a result, whether they knew it or not, and their
02:48public relations staff in San Francisco is sensational?
02:52Am I surprised they delayed it, knowing that there would be people who would start to speculate why, and is
02:59there more, and should there be more in the conversation?
03:03Yes.
03:03I think that was absolutely a misstep here by the San Francisco 49ers.
03:09Now, I do think it's also, because we are obviously on Shine Time, a sports show, to mention, I do
03:17think this has a perhaps negative effect, domino effect, of the 49ers for the season.
03:24Kyle Shanahan is a phenomenal coach.
03:26Kyle Shanahan runs a tight ship in training camp.
03:29Kyle Shanahan is a top 2-3-4 play caller in the National Football League.
03:34Kyle Shanahan created Brock Purdy.
03:38I think Brock Purdy's great.
03:39I think he's become great because of the watchful eye of Kyle Shanahan.
03:42Mike Evans, first camp with the San Francisco 49ers.
03:46I would like that he and Brock Purdy and Kyle Shanahan were all together and practicing and coming up with
03:53a game plan and what works and what sticks.
03:55Look, the Niners are going to get Nick Bosa back.
03:57They're going to get Fred Warner back.
03:58San Francisco's loaded.
03:59Christian McCaffrey is still unbelievable.
04:03Trent Williams, full training camp.
04:04George Kittle.
04:05We can go through the galaxy of stars, right?
04:08This team will be locked and loaded to do great things once again.
04:14Or this might ultimately prevent them from being a playoff team.
04:18Rams are the team to beat in the division.
04:20The champs are still in the division.
04:22The NFC has a lot of great teams.
04:24I don't lock in my picks or predictions, and this is why, injuries, things that happen until the Wednesday before
04:31Labor Day.
04:32Then we put everything in stone.
04:34Currently, I have the 49ers, team 5 through 8 in the NFC.
04:40And I think San Francisco, by the way, 8 is a bad number.
04:44Seven teams in the conference make the playoffs.
04:47So, 8 is not where you want to be.
04:49I think this is obviously something to monitor.
04:52As John Lynch said, there is no protocol in place when it comes to coaches and concussions.
04:59I am concerned about Kyle as a coach.
05:02I'm concerned about Kyle as a human being.
05:05I like John Lynch a lot.
05:07I like Kyle Shanahan a lot.
05:08I love the 49ers as an organization.
05:11But the delay in all this does increase skepticism, confusion, conversation, consternation.
05:21And that puts the Niners as a topic for conversation for the wrong reasons.
05:28There's an ambiguity.
05:29There's a haze over this story.
05:32That is not a good thing as we speak in San Francisco.
