00:02all right just in time for training camp new uniforms to some controversy bulldog would you
00:10agree today the helmets the uniforms there's been some things said but a lot of things said
00:15today yeah there's been something said a lot of negativity toward these uh this new look
00:20sal capaccio with us now on the western hotline i know sal you were up in canada for much of
00:27today
00:27were you out of the firing line on this one or what exactly uh i mean still poking in on
00:37it we uh
00:37we did a podcast last night and talked a lot about it at length uh met bove and i can
00:41check that out
00:41we gave our thoughts on it and what we kind of thought about it while we were live and you
00:45can
00:45you know watch the recorded version um you know i was with some people today uh it's the for zach
00:51hyman's event up there and you know and he's a big bills fan and people were talking about the uniforms
00:55a little bit with me uh throughout the day it was got some toronto media members that uh we we
01:00all
01:00know and so you know i i guess i got a little bit of it but not quite to the
01:03level you guys did you
01:04know be on social yeah i i watched your your podcast um i i think i i started when it
01:10started and then i
01:11you know i paused so i whatever but i i watched it and i thought it was interesting that you
01:16and matt
01:17both had the the opposite view of the two the two like there's the jerseys the uniform itself and then
01:24the helmet and if i've got it right matt loves the helmet but doesn't really like the uniform
01:30and you were more like me or our this is what you said last night i i don't i kind
01:36of like the
01:36i'm not i'm not against the gray i kind of like it the helmet with it i'm really struggling with
01:43yeah i i don't love the helmet i love having i think you're in buffalo you know to me a
01:49buffalo
01:49bill so much you have a buffalo on it but i understand you want something unique and different
01:52like i understand the perspective of wanting something like that but it just didn't hit right
01:57with me um not having a buffalo on it that being said uh the charge logo that that stripe has
02:05been
02:06a predominant theme really since the start of the building of the new stadium even the mesh
02:11that's gone into the stadium that you know that wind confusion mesh it's it's it's the charge is
02:17the holes basically it's the shape of that when you walk through the stadium you see that so i
02:20understand you know why they did that um the jersey itself i don't mind gray and as i said in
02:28the pod
02:28last night like i'm i'm kind of a traditionalist when it comes to uniforms i don't love all these new
02:32uniforms everybody has all the time like i mean you know oregon was the first you know college team
02:37several years ago just have all these incredibly new uniforms all the time every week and it's like
02:41there's too much right like i don't mind a third or a little bit of a different spin on something
02:47but i'm kind of a traditionalist in fact it's kind of funny like i went to syracuse and syracuse and
02:52penn state for many years were rivals but i actually love penn state's uniforms because they're clean
02:56they're just all white or all blue and the gray is fine with me like that and actually when i
03:01saw
03:02a picture of a bills player i don't know if it was ai or a real picture like before the
03:06unveil today
03:06i said oh that actually looks really good i like that it is not just sitting on a rack at
03:11a hanger
03:12right where you don't get the full effect but yeah i guess the helmet for me was what i didn't
03:16love
03:16but matt loved the helmet a lot more like he really thought that was cool and i guess it just
03:20goes to
03:20it's just like music taste right whatever hits your eyes your taste buds your ears your favorite wing
03:25place or whatever yeah someone i don't think it was matt um but i i saw today i'd give
03:32credit if i could think of who said it but basically they put you mentioned oregon and penn
03:36state in the same breath here they put an oregon helmet on a penn state uniform is kind of what
03:43has happened here and that's interesting that's a that's a bit of a weird fit to me like i i
03:48i think
03:48i might like everything more if the uniform even though i like the gray if the uniform were less
03:57traditional to go with the very non-traditional helmet that would maybe make sense to me um
04:03yeah so would a more traditional helmet with what is a pretty traditional looking uniform aside from
04:08the color yeah i totally get it it seems like it's more of a modern and traditional mix max you
04:15know
04:15um matching together mixing together right and maybe you want one or the other and i look like i said
04:22you
04:22want to go with a new uniform here there i'm totally cool with it i have my own thoughts on
04:26what like
04:26good new uniforms look like and what get people riled up and jazzed up and to me and i don't
04:31know
04:31the bills have ever considered this but it seems like like getting a black uniform is a cool thing
04:35like the eagles have done it and the ravens have done it and the dolphins now what do they want
04:39to
04:39call their really dark whatever it's black right yeah the jets have done it it just feels like that's
04:44something that oh yeah look the texans and their real dark blue you know something like that so but
04:49hey i mean everybody's got their own thought on it and you don't you know you're never going to
04:53please everybody we know that no matter what you do um and i think the bills know that as well
04:57but
04:58yeah i mean we'll see how it looks once they trot out on the field and i agree a hundred
05:02percent with
05:03your point that you said that like once they wear them and josh allen's wearing it on the field like
05:08people will be like oh yeah that's really cool i want one they probably should have known already
05:11that they can't please everyone but they found out today if they didn't uh you mentioned penn state i
05:17can never place the name of the magazine but i for some reason still remember this well and have
05:23brought it up before there was a like an oversized in the 80s an oversized sports magazine that had a
05:30ranking of college football uniforms and they had the 10 best and the 10 worst and number one among
05:35the best penn state and just a brief description of each one something like the definition of class
05:41and then they had the list of the 10 worst number one penn state can't you think of anything
05:47can't you just think of anything literally at all to put on that helmet nothing okay that's the best
05:51you can do great program you go sal capaccio on the western hotline i mean i i grew up as
05:57a kid that
05:58would draw the logos and loved helmets and uniforms and all of it and the bills have mostly had that
06:04same image on their helmets ever since i mean since what the late 70s when they or mid 70s when
06:10they
06:11switched to the the buffalo with the charging charging stripe i don't think i've ever really
06:15referred heard it referred to by name um i mean i haven't been to the new stadium yet to see
06:22this
06:22thing like this whole charge imaging yeah like i i just never even would have thought that the stripe
06:28itself had a name we had a name could be like a a logo almost basically like could could even
06:36be this
06:37and i don't know it just looks so i've never thought to separate it from the buffalo on the
06:42bill's logo you know it's just like it's there it's it's key to drawing it correctly to know just
06:47sort of like what angle to put it yes yes but i'm not even like the least bit familiar with
06:55that alone
06:56without the animal as like any part of the bill's brand but it it is now but i think it
07:02evolves over
07:03the years right maybe it ever was and then it became kind of a thing right where you're like oh
07:06they started building the stadium and hey you know what we need this this mesh in the holes inside
07:11the the the whatever you want to call the steel or however yeah and and then someone came up with
07:17the idea why don't we do the charge logo like or little buffaloes or something right and yeah the
07:22charge logo is cool instead of just something square so that became a thing right i remember
07:26i remember when the dolphins changed the look of the dolphin himself going through the hoop or
07:32whatever it was like he went from being a happy dolphin to a mean dolphin right and that was on
07:36purpose like little things like that can matter sometimes just that little tiny tweak and yeah i
07:41think the charge the the logo has kind of become a thing even if it wasn't an actual thing many
07:46years
07:47ago fair enough sorry you got me thinking about the the dolphin logo used to look like a dolphin
07:53performing at a at a at a water park like i'm happy i'm jumping through the hoop and then they
08:00changed it to like more aggressive i would i can only imagine what the wording in the press release for
08:05that looked like a red light but yeah it was like more streamlined and like it's attacking it's not
08:11it's hunting prey or something as opposed to just trying to please everybody which is what the original
08:17logo probably was too nice now they took the helmet off it on the dolphin's logo they removed the
08:22helmet with the m on it all right well we have something new to argue about sal capaccio with us
08:29training camp this week we are just about here so what's the schedule tomorrow just players report
08:35and then on the field wednesday yeah so players report and then that's when they'll do their testing
08:39guys something like that's the first day and because you know we know that because they can't test on
08:43wednesday there's practice on wednesday morning you're not gonna be out there doing that
08:47i wouldn't think at like 6 a.m so they'll do their physicals and stuff tomorrow and and and
08:51they're testing and if people don't pass that and you know aren't in a position to be able to
08:56practice we'll find that out now it could be tomorrow night we find that out it could be wednesday
09:02morning i think generally since you know i've been covering the bills at least now it is a different
09:07regime but you know brain and being still there obviously joe brady but it's generally been we find
09:12out the morning of but it has been it has happened the night of the the night before whereas
09:17you find out someone's on pop you find out someone's on you know got an issue they didn't
09:21pass a physical physically unable to perform in some capacity so that's what happens tomorrow and
09:27then wednesday morning we will hear from joe brady at 8 a.m they'll be on the practice field at
09:318 30
09:31and then brandon bean will speak afterward do you have top of mind guys who maybe went through the spring
09:38stuff with various ailments and i feel like dorian williams would be at the top of such a list that
09:44like
09:44guys you're kind of on the lookout to hear a clean bill of health or something else on yeah i
09:50think
09:51the number one guy for me would be michael hoyt actually because of kind of his progression
09:55uh through the offseason from the you know ota's mini camp where he was last year with the injury
10:02and him saying like my goal is to be ready for training camp like and i say that number one
10:06for
10:06me because i'm just curious like is he ready already so i don't i mean if he is i think
10:10it's
10:10remarkable to be quite honest with you happens now you know yeah right and daniel jones today
10:15said he was going to be ready he tore his achilles late yeah that's that's right and
10:20i mean we'll see about him so to me that's the number one like intriguing thing at some point
10:26michael hoyt's going to come back as long as he didn't have a setback so that could be a week
10:30in
10:30the training camp that could be at the end of preseason in the regular season and then yeah
10:33dorian williams is the one that this showed up during mini camp when he did not perform and we
10:40knew he was on crutches and saw him but he was at a couple of events over the last couple
10:45months one
10:45of them was uh the poncho's army meat raffle that i attended i know he was seen at the taste
10:50of
10:50country by a couple people he was not wearing he was not using crutches which is a really good sign
10:55that doesn't mean he's ready to play but i'm encouraged by that we'll see what happens with him
10:58cole bishop had something cleaned up in his knee and did not perform at all during ota's and
11:03minicamp he was very certain that he would be ready to go um he said he was staying in buffalo
11:08to rehab basically to make sure that everything was you know good to go by the time he got there
11:12so those are a few of the guys joshua palmer did actually participate in minicamp after missing most
11:17of ota's uh not all of them so you know that's another guy you kind of on the lookout for
11:22and i
11:22think there's just the usual suspects of are these guys healthy are they good dalton kincaid you know
11:28the load management stuff that came up with him now they're respecting anything you know to be wrong
11:32tomorrow which is the thing you're looking for and is he healthy enough is he taking a full amount
11:36of reps max harrison after having his injury a couple our last year uh early in the season late
11:42in the season and then you know coming back and he was in at ota's and minicamp so just guys
11:46like
11:46that that you're kind of on the lookout for i want to get back to kincaid he was the first
11:50name i
11:50thought of for this but although he's not coming off like an injury exactly uh but you know it's always
11:55kind of part of the the story with him but palmer i wrote down for sal's visit today just in
12:01my notes
12:01here before i forget colon joshua palmer that's it just i wanted to make sure i remembered joshua
12:07palmer because he's he's this year's curtis samuel to me somebody that i just yeah it's always coleman
12:12it's always dj moore it's always you know shakir and whoever else but okay right palmer so this will
12:19be for wednesday if he's healthy at least this will be for wednesday is like i mean maybe this is
12:23the
12:24kind of thing that you're not supposed to share maybe like just who's who's with allen you know
12:29who's who's with the ones maybe you know palmer could be news either way on that one yeah you know
12:35mike i mean he he did perform he was available during minicamp so i'll say this if he's not
12:41available wednesday that's a huge red flag i mean he was out for ota's he came back from minicamp
12:47and then suddenly what he's out again like you're like okay but you you just can't count on this guy
12:51and
12:52you have to start thinking about alternate plans then for me the story with josh palmer is more of
12:56a i guess i'll call it long term like through training camp like at the end of camp where's
13:01josh palmer not at the beginning i want to know what is his role how does he look what does
13:06that
13:06group look like but he's in the group with keon coleman for totally different reasons it's not an
13:11injury situation with keon coleman it's doing everything right is he making plays does he look
13:15like a third year 30 third pick overall of the nfl draft right i mean like that's that's what i'm
13:21looking for those two guys are really really key members of the offense and how the offense will be
13:28structured from a roster standpoint because you got skylar bell right behind them knocking on the door
13:32oh by the way let's add him to the list skylar bell did not he was not at minicamp i
13:37think people
13:37forget about that i just forgot about that talking about it um he had an injury at minicamp but he
13:42was
13:42inside working with trainers and a jugs machine i'm not too concerned but he's a rookie and he wasn't out
13:47there so when you once you go back i'm sorry go beyond more and shakir there are question marks
13:54all throughout the rest of the wide receiver group and honestly like it's a really big swing depending
14:01on how many of those guys are healthy and look good and can do what you need them to do
14:06versus
14:07how many guys don't yeah and if i wasn't specific enough i just want to know if he's if he
14:12starts
14:13you know if he's in the if it's not the lineup but if he's like on the field for the
14:17first team reps
14:17or is that instead or whoever that might be instead like palmer assuming he's healthy enough
14:23to participate all right is is he a starter you know that's all questions i mean like it would be
14:28big news if he weren't i think let me ask you guys this if he's not is that saying more
14:33about
14:33if he is or he isn't i should say does it say more about josh palmer keon coleman how that
14:37goes
14:38right that depends yeah if coleman's in palmer's spot like that's obviously stock way up on coleman
14:46maybe stock down on palmer and then we start talking about brandon cooks every day
14:53that's right i just think those two guys are so interesting the most interesting person at this
15:00camp i think is you know for this year is keon coleman right now because of all this it's just
15:04so much of kind of how that group looks really kind of hinges on i think how he looks what
15:10he does
15:11how he performs and quite honestly we might not know that until the regular season begins and that's
15:17what's going to be maybe frustrating about all of it because even if he looks great over the next four
15:23weeks it is very very fair for any person to say i don't care show me the regular season
15:29sell on kincaid i don't know if you'd have a number at the ready but listed six four two forty
15:36right and then we get through a season and he's banged up and we need him stronger or just i
15:41don't
15:41know bigger whatever it is that that'll be a story too i mean if he's healthy great you'd want to
15:47see
15:47that but then also like is he different is he is he bigger is he different i mean is there
15:53a
15:53a weight or a certain thought you have on what's ideal i don't know about a certain number as far
16:00as the weight as you say um i will say that like standing next to him during minicamp after practices
16:06i think he looked like an nfl tight end like he he looked bigger he looked more like he's not
16:14dawson right but he looked more like dawson knox than he did a wide receiver coming into the league like
16:19that's a good thing he looks like he put on strength and muscle now we i think we said that
16:24last year about him it's not that though it's the knee that was bothersome but the other thing he
16:27wasn't wearing he wasn't wearing a knee brace those last few days which was really good as well
16:30but i do think he looked bigger and guys i actually think he blocked pretty well last year when he
16:35was
16:35asked to do that you know he's not he's not always digging guys out of the box but he's on
16:39the
16:39perimeter sometimes and he does a nice job and you know i don't i i think sometimes it's unfair
16:44to think about well he's got to be a really good blocker yes that's true but he's not
16:47like he doesn't have to be um an in-line hand on the ground down blocking blocker but he's got
16:53to
16:53be willing and capable and to be able to go against guys that are you know his size or less
16:57and make
16:58sure that he wins that rep and i think he did a good job of that last year when he
17:01was on the
17:01i i remember certainly the opener i mean it's a long season there were 16 other games but i remember
17:06a
17:06couple of plays early in the baltimore game where he was very aggressive with with dbs at the sideline
17:12and we even i i'm sure we talked about it then um that it seemed like he was trying to
17:17make an
17:18impression at least that he's he's willing and able to perform that if asked and he is and i think
17:25he is i think part of it is on the team though and rightfully so they probably have concerns about
17:32if we do that too much what are we doing to his body right we need him available to catch
17:37passes and
17:38run down the field and i think there's a delicate balance there but that's the kind of thing that
17:42we're all talking about here and how that works out oh look he had his fifth year option picked up
17:46which is not this year but next year so he's under contract for two more years they have an
17:50investment in him they want to see that through they want to keep him healthy but he's also got to
17:55be
17:55able to be able to do all of those kinds of things to justify kind of that investment they're
18:00putting in him always one for me where i feel like i'm getting stuck at every turn
18:05you know he catches the ball he's talented when he is running routes he gets the ball i mean he's
18:11for a tight end he ranks high in those areas but if i need him to be bigger so that
18:16when he's on the
18:17field i can have him put his hand down and block on you know in the running game so that
18:22teams don't
18:22know what i'm doing because they throw almost 80 percent of the time when he's on the field right
18:26without knocks uh so yep i coaches are they hate that stuff they don't want to give it away i've
18:33got
18:33jackson hawes over here you know can just road grader type and he was a little bit interesting
18:39as a receiver as well a lot has to go right just for the for the player physically and then
18:45also for
18:46the fit because it just has never really been smooth with him there have been good moments but
18:51it's just never really been smooth so we'll see uh if this year is any different in that way
18:56there's one where i can't i'll need to get to week one i mean whatever happens that change that
19:02between now and week one would only be negative be like well he's you know missing practice or
19:07whatever that is but just like you said about coleman get got to get me to the season and
19:12that's right you know see what it looks like then um all right anything else on your mind for tomorrow
19:19and for wednesday i guess maybe more importantly with brady and his first training camp as the head
19:25coach um and whatever else yeah like you know mike mentions that with brady's first time like i i'm
19:32curious if we'll get the welcome to training camp speech on social media from them with brady like
19:39i'm just curious because a part of my sort of it's a concern is even not appropriate it's just i'm
19:46curious like how he how comfortable he is and how well because it it's not the easiest thing in the
19:54world to captivate you know in this case it's going to be what 90 guys not just like your 53
19:59plus the
20:00practice squad like it would be in the regular season and like i watched a clip i don't know if
20:04you saw it sale last week with the giants starting up earlier i watched john harbaugh who's done that 18
20:11times with the baltimore ravens and it felt like an snl skit like it just it just seemed really flat
20:19and
20:20weird and like and that's someone who's done it again almost 20 different times as a head coach of
20:25a of a team um it's not you know i just don't assume that that's going to go you know
20:32great
20:34i have not seen that now you gave me some homework to do tonight and go watch that from john
20:39harbaugh
20:39so i'll check that out later today yeah i mean joe i think we'll say that i'll say this about
20:44joe
20:45he seems more and more comfortable you know in front of a mic or behind it talking to media like
20:52as he goes on here we all know he's a super energetic guy and he's willing to kind of just
20:57talk you know more than mcdermott being open and even during the draft guys i don't know if you know
21:01this but like the three days that we were down there the thursday the friday and then the saturday
21:07like well before the draft actually started like joe brady just walked in the meter room like hey
21:12how are you doing like what do you guys think about tonight what i mean like he's just i think
21:16he he's comfortable being like that so i think that if if he wants to give some sort of rah
21:22rah
21:22speech welcome to training camp you know i think he's up for it um and i think the reviews from
21:27his
21:27players and all the podcasts they're doing all the things you hear about him that they love you know
21:31the energy that he brings right there um so i think that'll be fine for him for me you ask
21:36me
21:36like what i'm thinking about what i'm looking at yeah that's a little part of it it's a new defense
21:42first time in 10 years they'll have a new defense they have a new defensive coordinator i mean i know
21:46the names have changed and leslie frazier with all that but yeah jim this is jim leonard's show man and
21:51like i am really interested to see how that starts to come together because we have not seen that in
21:5710 years also plenty of new numbers make sure you have what you need to know scorecard a scorecard
22:03right um including tyler bass who maybe sold his number two to dj more and now is wearing number
22:12number 16 so look for tyler bass there's another guy we haven't seen
22:15you
