00:00Ed Ryder with you on WGR, Zach Jones and G helping out as well, and we are, as I really
00:09like to do, and I think you guys are starting to appreciate this format, this goes back
00:13to the days of Greg Williams' press conferences, back in, he became the coach in what, 01 or
00:1902 or 03, whatever, somewhere around when I was born.
00:22Back then, and he was such a liar, like everything he said was such garbage that I couldn't just
00:31play his news conferences.
00:32When it was Wade Phillips, like, all right, we'll just put it on, he talks for 18 minutes,
00:36we just play it and talk about it afterward.
00:38It was Greg Williams, like, I cannot just listen to this man say the things he's saying, so
00:43we had this thing called the truth detector where we would hit buzzers when he was lying,
00:46which was always, we'd be like, yeah, we're playing the Patriots, ding, and I think we
00:50got a really good shot.
00:52You know, like that kind of thing.
00:53Yeah.
00:54Now that we're, it's just, I have always enjoyed sort of interacting with the audio, and so
01:00we brought it back, you know, me and Tim have been doing it, Tim and I have been doing it,
01:06but I thought today it made sense to, it's like having Joe Brady on the show.
01:10Yeah.
01:10Gives us a chance to talk about all the same stuff he's talking about, as we are a couple
01:14weeks away from the season opener between the Bills and the Texans.
01:18So that's what we're doing so far, but I encourage you to be a part of the show.
01:22Call in, you can react too.
01:24That's the beauty of it.
01:26803-0550 is the number, and that's what we're doing.
01:29So Joe Brady talked for like 18 minutes.
01:33We've gotten through about three minutes and 19 seconds of it, so I don't know that we're
01:37going to get through all of it, but let's keep rolling, hear more of what Joe Brady had
01:40to say.
01:41You made a decision on number two quarterback?
01:43Yeah, they're still, you're going to see both of them on Thursday.
01:47I think both of them played really good football, and I have such confidence calling the game
01:53with them, knowing them.
01:54I've been with them for a while, too.
01:55That makes my life a lot easier, and there's a lot of positions that, you know, we're not
02:00just taking just the game reps into consideration, like the practice as a whole, but I think both
02:06of them have gone out there and led us down the field and made really sound decisions,
02:10played clean football.
02:11I don't need them to be Josh Allen.
02:13I need them to, you know, play within the system.
02:15They've both done a really good job at that.
02:17Joe, the last time you guys were in the stadium for practice, some of the players had concerns
02:21about the field.
02:22Do you have any concerns if you've talked with them or anybody else about-
02:27Careful, Joe.
02:28Careful, Joe.
02:29No, I'm way more concerned about the product that we're putting out on the field over the,
02:34you know, the field conditions, right?
02:36Like, we have enough things for us to kind of go through, and I've felt it, you know,
02:42through the preseason.
02:43You know, we're going through a new stadium, operations, field, team.
02:46We're all figuring it all out, right?
02:48And so we have to make sure that the product on the field is where it needs to be, and
02:52everybody
02:53else will take care of it.
02:54Joe, as you get to the end of your first training camp, can you just kind of reflect a little
02:58bit on just how you've managed the role of having the head coach as a post-office coordinator
03:03through these past six weeks, and how it's changed the way you do your job?
03:07Yeah, probably haven't spent much time actually reflecting on it.
03:10You just kind of wake up and see what you need to get done.
03:13But I haven't felt like it's been anything too big, or, man, I don't have enough time
03:17to get this done.
03:18And I feel like I've been able to spend time with the defense and special teams and still
03:24have a great feel for what we want to be offensively and being able to call it.
03:27And like I said, having Pete has made my life so much easier, and I can go some practices
03:32and call in it.
03:33Some practices I can roam around and let him kind of man the ship.
03:36But I haven't felt like anything has been where it's like, oh, man, I wasn't prepared
03:41or ready for this.
03:42And again, I have a great coaching staff and players that make my life a lot easier.
03:46Do you feel like he has been more looked and sounded more comfortable as this has gone
03:52on?
03:52Because I had one concern.
03:53As much as I've liked everything, I like his vibe.
03:56I like his personality when he was first named head coach.
03:59There was this jittery thing that was going on where I thought, oh, and even if I'm trying
04:06to say this the right way, you can be an intelligent person with intelligent thoughts.
04:12And when you say them and they just stumble with them coming out of your mouth, you don't
04:16come across as an intelligent person with intelligent thoughts.
04:19And I thought early on, there was some fear on my part that that's who he might be for
04:27a while.
04:27And that's gone.
04:29Like, he just said, wrapping up your first training camp as a head coach.
04:32And I thought, oh, yeah, that's right.
04:34This was his first camp.
04:35That's how comfortable he seems at this point.
04:37Yeah, he definitely, to me, I mean, that first press conference, was it the opening 15
04:42minutes that it was like, is he going to start crying?
04:45Yeah, the whole time he was battling it.
04:48And like, that's not bad, necessarily.
04:51It's a very emotional moment.
04:53And it's very, like, that's very big.
04:55You're being introduced as the head coach of the team that you've been the offensive
04:58coach.
04:58Like, it's a big deal.
04:59So I'm not taking anything away from him because of that.
05:03But I had, like, is he going to be able to communicate the way that I think a head coach
05:08probably should?
05:09And the way that he does that got him the job, because that's what they love about him,
05:12is how real he is.
05:13He's so real.
05:14And I think in the media, he tends to be very good at sounding like that and not saying
05:19a whole lot, but is still interesting and engaging to listen to.
05:25And I think he's gotten back to that in a big way, to your point, about, like, he sounds
05:29like him again, where it's a lot of, like, there's some catchphrases in there, like,
05:34the put the ball down stuff and the don't blink.
05:37And, like, he just, he sounds like a dude who wants to, like, he's ready for games, is
05:42what he sounds like to me.
05:43He sounds like a coach that's ready for the games.
05:45You know where I also have been thinking about this with Brady?
05:49For many of us, the idea that they just elevated somebody was a huge negative.
05:53Like, I'll put myself out there, too.
05:55Like, I fell in love with the idea of Grant Yudinski or any of these guys.
06:00And I know coaches have to live, in many ways, that nomadic lifestyle of, every year, I could
06:05be picking up my family and moving across the country.
06:08But isn't there something, too, to him, having been here three, four years, probably didn't
06:12have to move houses.
06:12His kids probably are just going to the same schools with the same friends.
06:16Now he could just focus on, okay, I've got to take my time.
06:19Like, relax.
06:20The press conferences are more important now.
06:22But he's able to just decompress where some of the harder stuff, like, oh, you've done this.
06:26I've done this, where you have to move, you're dealing with that, and then also, like, okay,
06:30but I've got schoolwork, and I've got my team, and I've got to practice.
06:33And you're like, I'm in this entirely new environment.
06:35For him, he's like, no, I'm exactly where I was.
06:38I'm in the same environment with a new role.
06:40Yep.
06:40And that, I think, for me at least, is an easier idea.
06:45I have to adjust what I'm doing day to day in terms of, like, how I'm approaching the
06:49job.
06:50Maybe there's a couple more responsibilities.
06:52But I'm in the same place.
06:54I'm around the same people, mostly.
06:56I mean, obviously, with the Sean McDermott firing, there were some staff that moved
07:00on as well.
07:01But that idea, to me, sounds like I would get comfortable quicker to be, all right, I've
07:09got a new gig, but I'm still here.
07:12Like, if I had to go from being, like I'm doing today, this is maybe kind of a great
07:17example, is G's in there doing the job I normally do, but I'm in the same place.
07:23I'm with you.
07:24I've worked with you.
07:25I've worked with Zach.
07:26I'm sitting in this chair.
07:27And it's a different job I'm doing, but I'm in the same building.
07:31I'm in the same studio.
07:32I'm with the same people talking about the same thing.
07:34Right.
07:34Whereas if I had to go do that job that I do in there for Detroit, I think I would
07:40be
07:40a little like, I don't know what they're really talking about.
07:43Who's the quarterback?
07:45Ah, the coordinator?
07:46What?
07:47Who's this guy?
07:48Oh, this is my producer?
07:49All right.
07:49Ah, like that's a much scarier proposition to me than doing what I've done here today,
07:55which is kind of a good proxy for what we're describing here.
07:58All right.
07:58Let's get back to Joe Brady.
08:01Joe, from the grass perspective, and I know there's a break-in period that, you know, we've
08:06explained now, but we think the board of grass needs to grow and stuff like that.
08:09What about a player safety issue?
08:11I mean, what concerns might you have with a player safety issue that, you know, the term
08:14gives way or in that sense?
08:16Yeah, if we're notified that, hey, you know, it's kind of like any stadium, you can play
08:22the stadium, there's going to be a lot of potential concerns about it.
08:25But if there was something that we didn't feel like it was safe for our guys to play,
08:29we wouldn't be on that.
08:31And look, there's been, it's part of it, right?
08:34You'd much rather the grass than the alternative, right?
08:36And so I think that's part of, that's why we've been going over there is to get used to
08:41it and to get playing on it.
08:43Like, again, all of this has to be an advantage for us.
08:45And, you know, I have full trust in, you know, the other side of the building of, and they're
08:51all going to be doing what they have to do to make it where it's the best grounds in football.
08:54Joe, you've been in the booth and you've been on the field.
08:57As Jim goes through his process here, how much do you kind of communicate with him, A,
09:02about your experiences, and B, what's best for the team?
09:06Yeah, I think it's, some of it is, it's best for the team, but it's also best for the,
09:11for the coach.
09:12Um, there's a comfort level, there's, um, I've had a lot of fun being down there.
09:16I've started setting their man like, man, I wish I was down there a lot more, you know,
09:19in the previous years.
09:20But, um, yeah, I think it's all about, you know, uh, what you need to see, um, what you
09:26need, um, and your coaching staff around you, um, when you're in the box, it's so, it's so
09:32much more controlled in a preseason game.
09:34It's really hard to get a feel of it because you're not making adjustments.
09:37You're not, you know, you're kind of just after a drive, you, you're trying to manufacture,
09:42hey, this is what we would kind of do right now, but you're really just like, hey, who's
09:45going to be playing the next drive?
09:46This is what we got to do.
09:47So it's a really, it's hard to get a full, this is what's, you know, the box is going
09:52to be like.
09:53Um, Jim has had experience doing both.
09:56So I'm, I'm going to let him roll with it.
09:58Um, uh, whatever he's comfortable with, if he needs to sit there and be able to look in
10:02the guy's eyes and be able to talk through it, I'm good with it.
10:04If he feels like he needs to be up there and want to see it from that perspective and be
10:07able to make the adjustments and not necessarily need some of the pictures or rely with people
10:10upstairs.
10:11Um, I'm good with it.
10:12And that's been the communication we've had from the job.
10:14That is something I think is very interesting.
10:18And because I'm very curious, which one of those options Jim Leonard chooses.
10:23I know what I would choose.
10:24Do you know what you would choose?
10:25I a hundred percent know.
10:26Do you know what you choose?
10:26Yep.
10:27All right.
10:27What would you choose?
10:28Up in the booth.
10:29Up in the booth.
10:29Up in the booth.
10:30A hundred percent.
10:30A hundred percent up in the booth.
10:31Up in the booth.
10:31It has to be up in the booth.
10:32Just from going to game.
10:34Sitting in the press box versus sitting in the front row.
10:37One of them is great.
10:37One of them is terrible.
10:38One of them I know what's going on.
10:39One I don't.
10:40We've got communication devices.
10:42Let's use them.
10:42Right.
10:43And I, I think that what, whichever one of those two options Jim Leonard chooses will
10:49tell us a lot about who Jim, Jim Leonard is as a coach.
10:53Because I think if you're choosing to be down on the field, you are knowingly sacrificing.
10:58I will not be able to diagnose as much as I would be up there, but I'm doing it because
11:04I want to be here with the players.
11:05And I think I am more useful as a motivator, as a teacher than I am as an analyst or
11:14a diagnostician.
11:16Up there, I'm going to be, here's what I'm doing.
11:18Here's what they're doing.
11:19Here's how I need to solve this puzzle.
11:22Down there is, how can I rally the troops?
11:24And to me, that's a fascinating thing to learn about a coach.
11:30And Brady's always been a booth guy.
11:32And I find it interesting that he seems to be such a coach of the people, having been
11:37a booth guy.
11:38I like that about him because it makes me think guys like him and he thinks he can do all
11:44the stuff that being in the booth affords you the ability to do.
11:47And I am hoping we see Jim Leonard in the booth because I know he has mostly been on
11:53the sideline.
11:54I know at Wisconsin he was on the sideline when he was de-coordinated there.
11:57And I think that if we see him go to the booth, I bet you we see more exotic, problem
12:05-solving,
12:06schematic things than you would if he was down on the sideline.
12:09And I find that fascinating.
12:11Well, the communication technology helps a ton here.
12:15And I think if I'm him, I'm finding my proxy that is my guy that I'm talking directly to
12:22going, I need you to go grab this person and tell him this.
12:25Or go grab him and put the headset on him because that's who I need to talk to right
12:29now or whatever it is.
12:31But I think, yeah, there are so many positives that outweigh the negative of not being able
12:36to go grab a guy by his shirt and tell him something.
12:39To me, it's a no-brainer.
12:41It feels old-fashioned to me to feel that the sideline is better unless you truly feel
12:47that is your greatest asset as a coach, is a motivator, communicator, connection guy.
12:53And I don't necessarily get the sense that that's Jim Leonard.
12:56I think he's good at that.
12:58But I think what we all have heard, read, said about him is this guy's a witch doctor.
13:06He's going to do stuff that's going to be hard to figure out.
13:09He is also somebody, though, I think it might be one of his biggest strengths.
13:12A lot of the defensive players have talked about it, though.
13:14He is so good at simplifying what he wants, getting into your head.
13:19I mean, this is a big thing at Denver and at Wisconsin.
13:22And when he was a player, he could tell you how the defense was going to operate.
13:26It could sound like Latin, and he will have that coming out ABCs.
13:30You'll have no problem.
13:31And so for Leonard, I think that's why you're right.
13:34It is interesting because I think he's really good at both.
13:36Exactly, and that to me is fascinating because I never – I felt like –
13:41obviously, McDermott's a different situation.
13:43He's the head coach.
13:43He's got to be on the sideline.
13:45But if McDermott were to choose one of those two options, what do you think he's choosing?
13:49Oh, he's on the sidelines.
13:50He's on the sideline all day long to me.
13:52I think that's just what – he's that kind of guy.
13:56Fangio is the surprising one.
13:57Yep.
13:57Because if you just – if I looked at him with the Eagles, I'd be like, he's a hardcore old
14:02-school dude.
14:03He needs to be grabbing guys by the face mask, yelling at him, whatever.
14:05He's up in the booth.
14:06Yep.
14:07And his defenses are some of the best ones.
14:09But then you've got Flores, younger guy.
14:11He's got to be down on the sidelines.
14:13And he is a guy that comes up with as much exotic, twist, sort of front-line confusion stuff as
14:19anybody.
14:20So I just think it will be a very interesting decision that Leonard makes.
14:24All right.
14:24More from Joe Brady.
14:25Joe, with Javon Solomon, that's a really crowded position over there.
14:30And you were kind of told that this defense would fit him better than the previous defense did.
14:36What are you seeing from him, and what is he going to have to do to make the team?
14:40Yeah, Solly is – it's a lot more natural position for him now in the role that he's playing,
14:46being able to drop in coverage, be able to rush on the edge, be able to stand up.
14:50I think he has such a unique skill set because he can be an outside linebacker
14:55that can rush the quarterback, can drop in coverage, and then he's a very good special teams player.
14:59And so there's so much value in that, different than when you're just playing like a defensive end position,
15:04having to play six eyes and play inside in the sea gaps.
15:07You know, Solly's one of the strongest guys on our teams to be able to set the edge for the
15:11defense.
15:12You know, it's a – going into this offseason, it was a lot of questions about that outside linebacker room
15:18just in general
15:18and the depth that we've been able to add to it both in the draft and the free agency
15:22has made that one of the strengths of our team.
15:24If I'm Javon Solomon and I'm listening to this right now, I am thrilled that he's calling me by nickname.
15:29Yeah.
15:29Right?
15:30Solly.
15:30Doesn't that kind of lock you in a little bit more?
15:32I remember the first time, not to go on a tangent here about my own career,
15:35but I remember the first time my coach in New Mexico referred to me as not just Owen or Parker.
15:42It was OP, and I was like, oh, this is big, and I started the next game.
15:46That's a thing.
15:46I was like, okay.
15:48It can mean something.
15:49He was talking about you somewhere else.
15:51That's exactly what it is.
15:52I've come up in conversations with the assistants.
15:54They need a way to shorten my name.
15:56Love it.
15:56Which is good.
15:57All right.
15:57We've got to take a time out.
15:58Owen Parker, Brad Ryder with you on WG.
