Office Romance follows the love story of airline CEO Jackie Cruz (Lopez), who suddenly falls for a new employee at her company, lawyer Daniel Blanchflower (Goldstein). Goldstein, a longtime fan of Lopez, wrote this film for her and said it wouldn’t have been made if she had turned it down.

In New York City earlier this month, Refinery29’s Taylor Loren sat down with Lopez to talk all about the current rom-com renaissance, her chemistry with Goldstein, and the scene everyone is talking about.

00:00a romantic comedy renaissance it's a gennaissance on the floors on the charts again it's a gennaissance
00:07romantic comedy out we're back to that you've been doing romantic comedies your whole career
00:12why do you think that hollywood took a little bit of a pause on them and is bringing them back
00:17you
00:17just think things go in phases it's like whenever something great is made everybody kind of does
00:21that thing for a little while everybody's trying to like do game of thrones you know what i mean
00:25it's just like depends on the era and what's going on in the world and the zeitgeist and
00:29all of that and but i think with romantic comedies they always come back because
00:34they include two of the things that are most i think real about life which is
00:40life is funny and we're always going to be laughing through even the hardest darkest moments you'll
00:45find yourself like laughing with your friend just to survive it right like laughter is a key comedy
00:51is a key and then we're all like searching for someone everybody in the world is looking for
00:57their other half in a way or that person to spend their life with and that's always going to be
01:03part of life even with all the disconnection with tech and all of that kind of stuff people still need
01:09that human contact we need that connection with other people that's real tangible felt and i think
01:17that's what romantic comedies give us we know how they're going to end but it gives us hope that it
01:23could happen to us too and speaking of laughing i laughed so much in this movie oh my god it
01:29really
01:30surprised me people can't go in thinking it's your typical like typical like j-lo rom-com but i love
01:36that that's what drew me to it there was two things one is that we got to see a latina
01:41ceo which in all
01:43of these movies previously for me i was always like the aspiration the person who was aspiring to be
01:49something the working girl right who's trying to figure it out and quirky and whatever and this
01:55woman has it together she's created this company she's latin and nobody talks about it and she's the
02:01ceo she's the boss and i think for me that was a big part of it and the other thing
02:08that i really
02:08liked about the script is it had hard jokes it had adult jokes it was for it's for grown-ups
02:15in that
02:16sense they're hard jokes and i think it's unexpected but the minute you have that first
02:22thing that happens people go oh oh that's what we're doing okay and i think because brett wrote
02:29it with his partner joe kelly on this it has a male sensibility to it so it's not the typical
02:36rom-com
02:37in that way where you think people think oh chick flick this or that which i think reduces the genre
02:42so much it's not that at all but it is has this kind of male edge to it and so
02:50it's really a twofer
02:51in that way you get the romance but you also get this really great jokes and everybody's happy i love
02:58your note about the woman ceo even though she's in this position of power in an industry that's very
03:05male dominated she is still being underestimated in every way was there any experiences that you've
03:12been underestimated from that you drew from i think i've always been underestimated and in a weird way
03:17continue to be but i also feel like that's the secret to my success is you keep surprising people
03:23oh and you're like yeah but it's and it's fine it's like they they underestimate you and they do that
03:30for women a lot it happens right and so you just have to just keep doing your thing um and
03:37keep
03:37proving everybody wrong and not that i feel i have anything to prove anymore but it's always funny to me
03:43that people will continue to do that to you for whatever reasons and but most of mostly because
03:48you're a woman i think that's something that was so refreshing to me was that we don't see her career
03:54as this problem that has to be solved no it's it's lots of times men are often intimidated by a
04:01woman's
04:01success but in this movie he really champions her he's attracting her ambition why do you think that
04:08was like an important story to tell i think brett has said this a few times is it was a
04:13love letter
04:14to workaholics in a way because he's a workaholic and he loves what he does and i love what i
04:20do and
04:21sometimes you're right that's looked down upon and by some people but the truth is it's some people
04:28just love really love and are passionate about their work although some people other people would
04:33say oh because you're avoiding life and i think that's also true here in this movie they're both kind
04:39of have left that part of their life out because they don't want to feel or they are afraid or
04:46they are
04:47too private it's definitely the thing that connects them is that they both love what they do and respect
04:55the other and admire the other person for how good they are what they do yeah i think that is
04:59rare to
05:00find sometimes yeah yeah it's also a bit of a love letter to new jersey yes it is it is
05:07did it give
05:07you like a new appreciation for new jersey jersey i'm like such a new york east coast girl even though
05:14i've
05:14lived in california for so long it's just it's something that never leaves you and i think brett
05:20and you know they wrote that because they really felt like jersey's the most beautiful place on earth
05:25we love it here and it is really a love letter and all the crew a lot of the crew
05:30were from jersey and
05:31we had a good time doing it the chemistry with brett is amazing did you guys when you were first
05:37interacting was that natural do you have to work on it it's funny we both say like the first zoom
05:42that
05:42we had there was other people on it but i remember getting on the zoom and seeing him and he
05:49just
05:50smiled he like had got this big smile on his face and i guess i smiled too and i was
05:55like oh there's
05:55the guy who wrote this for me who sent me the note that said it's a list of one if
05:59you don't do this
06:00movie it's never being made you know like oh there he is and he said something like well jennifer
06:05lopez as i live and breathe or something like that because he had been a long time fan and then
06:10when we
06:11met in person it was a very natural easy chemistry i feel like people so often are shipping you with
06:18your co-stars because it's a constant but they ship me with anybody i could go to lunch we could
06:22go to
06:23lunch today me and this guy and they'd be like oh there's a new boyfriend oh should she get married
06:28fair i've done these things before but it's so it's fine and you've got to play so many fun jobs
06:36in
06:36your roles what about being a pilot did you do anything to prepare to make that come and it is
06:41bossy to be the pilot the ceo you know and i love that line i'm not just a pilot i'm
06:48also this year
06:49it's like one of those like cheesy commercials but i i loved it i don't know how to fly i
06:54did not do a
06:56simulator or anything like that but i did get a quick kind of like course on how to fly a
07:03little bit
07:03and where i have to do so i looked believable and all of that kind of stuff yeah that one
07:08turbulent
07:08scene so yeah a little bit of the sex scene on the plane with the titanic i know i was
07:15like i have
07:16this idea i think it's gonna be great so many of the scenes you know with like hard jokes and
07:20a little
07:20more outlandish scenes were those as funny to film in person as yeah they are when you're doing like
07:28pushing the envelope in those ways and doing things that haven't been seen on screen and that way
07:33you're always kind of like is this gonna work is this weird is this too much even when we're doing
07:38the scene with betty that's what i was thinking about yeah just trying to up the stakes and she was
07:45really like oh my god what am i doing but it it all works really well it's really funny do
07:51you think
07:51that was important to show the full childbirth experience i think why not this it's real it's
08:01natural and if she would have had that way that's what would have happened and it would have been
08:06that oh my god you know what i mean and i think it really gives you that feeling and at
08:10the same time
08:11is really a great vehicle for a lot of comedy yeah yeah the movie is definitely surprising and
08:17lots of surprising comedic moments
