00:00The thing I'm most afraid of is change a little bit.
00:04I usually always wear like really boring hairstyles.
00:07I'm excited, but I'm also a little nervous
00:09because I've never had two-tone color before.
00:11Hi, I'm Asia, and today I'm getting two-tone box braids.
00:15But before you see my transformation, subscribe below.
00:18The inspiration for today's look
00:20is the queen bee, Beyonce, for sure.
00:23I really admire like how she switches up all the time.
00:26I have thought about getting two-tone box braids before,
00:30but I just never had that actual push.
00:32I've always just been a one-tone person
00:35just wearing my hair black all the time.
00:37So this is a new stage of me being more free
00:40and trying out new styles so that I can, you know,
00:43add that pop-up color and edge.
00:45Good morning, how are you?
00:46Hi.
00:47So nice to meet you.
00:48Hi, I'm Evelyn.
00:49I'm a freelance hairstylist here in Los Angeles.
00:52I'm known for goddess braids, very small braids,
00:56medium-sized braids, braids, braids, braids.
00:59Tell me a little bit about your hair.
01:00I've been natural over five years.
01:03Oh, wow.
01:03I got some two-tone hair set up for you right here.
01:06So I'm ready when you are.
01:08I'm ready.
01:08You want to go?
01:09Yes.
01:10All right, let's do it.
01:10Let's do it.
01:11To start off, I section the client's hair from ear to ear.
01:15Then I tie up the top of her hair, and then I begin the back.
01:19I start from the nape all the way up to the crown in subsections.
01:25I've always loved protective styles, and I've been getting box braids, like, forever
01:30since I was a kid.
01:32We're going to do knotless today.
01:34Have you ever had them knotless before?
01:36No, I haven't.
01:37Great.
01:37I've always just had the traditional box braids.
01:40Knotless braids are box braids.
01:42It's just one has a knot, one doesn't.
01:45Today, I chose to do slanted boxes instead of the traditional box.
01:49I thought it would be fun for her, and I wanted to keep it interesting for Asia.
01:53The parting's a little bit medium-sized boxes to medium-sized braid.
01:59I take three small sections of the two-tone colored hair, and then I feed it into her natural
02:06hair, and I braid it all the way down to the tips.
02:25Today, on Asia, we used the Rastafree brand.
02:28The color was FS27 slash 613.
02:32Once the hair is fully braided all the way down to the tips, I begin to boil the hot water.
02:38As that's boiling, I'm going to mousse her hair from root to tips, then I'm going to
02:45spray her hair with leave-in conditioner, then I'm going to oil her scalp, and then from
02:51there, I'm going to tie her edges down with edge control.
02:56Then I'm going to dip her hair with the hot water.
03:00I dip it about three different times to make sure it's sealed and it's not going to unravel.
03:07Then I dry it with a towel.
03:10After dipping her hair three times, I go in and just taper the ends a little bit, make
03:16sure it looks as nice as possible.
03:20And then from there, I remove the wrap around her edges, and then she's ready for her reveal.
03:27Okay!
03:28Yay!
03:29Oh!
03:30Oh!
03:32Oh!
03:32Oh!
03:33Wow!
03:34This looks so good!
03:36Yay!
03:37Wow!
03:38I love, love, love, love, love, love my new hair.
03:42The parts are so precise, and my baby hairs are late, right?
03:46And the length is beautiful, like, I'm in love.
03:50Aftercare is probably one of the most important steps for long-lasting braids.
03:54I like to tell all of my clients to make sure to oil their scalp, put leave-in conditioner
04:01in their hair, and wrap their hair at night.
04:04Working with Evelyn was so good.
04:05She was definitely very light-handed.
04:09I could be tender-headed sometimes, but she was very gentle.
04:12She made me feel very comfortable, and she's very knowledgeable just about hair and how to
04:17maintain and make sure that my hair stays healthy.
04:20I'm going to keep this look for about two months.
04:23If I can go longer than that, I will try, but I'm not going to try to press it too
04:27hard.
04:28I am going to show my hair off to my friends.
04:34Do you see this color?
04:36Oh my god!
04:37I love that color in you.
04:40Channeling my inner Beyonce?
04:43This look was very scary to me because I'm not used to getting color, but I feel so empowered
04:50to make change and to just do whatever I want to do and have fun.
04:55Thank you so much for watching Refinery29.
