00:00I've wanted to have Fulani braids or tribal braids for so long and I never
00:04really pulled the trigger on it. My forehead's a little big so having this
00:08cornrows at the top section for the Fulanis I'm going a little bit out of my
00:12comfort zone. Hey everyone I'm Alexis and today I'll be getting tribal or Fulani
00:18braids. I'm really excited about this braid style mainly because I've never
00:23gotten them before. I've always wanted to and I just never really pulled the
00:26trigger. I've always stayed on the safer side with a box braid or even you know a
00:31wash and go is what I typically do so I'm really really excited to not only get
00:35Fulani braids but also get a little bit of color today. Hi guys my name is Francesca
00:40Kiki and today we will be braiding with Touch of Niger. Hey I'm Kiki. Hey Kiki I'm Alexis how are
00:47you?
00:47I'm doing good so I hear that you're getting the Fulani braids today what made
00:51you get that style? Yeah I think I'm just super excited to try a new look and I
00:56think you know I've seen your work and I know I'm in good hands. Well I'm excited
01:00let's get into it. This style typically takes about six to seven hours depending
01:04on how long you get it will be how long it takes. First we're going to take down
01:08her two natural plaits something that I do very gently just because we want to
01:12make sure we're retaining the integrity of her hair without you know any extra
01:15pulling. Turning your hair from like a natural color to a honey blonde color is a
01:20technique that I think that we at Touch of Niger have mastered or rather hone
01:25into. Most recently we started with a name called the Holly braids which is an
01:31ombre version of a 1B to a 30. Yeah I'm really excited I think the color is
01:39really where the creativity comes in. I think I've always done a black braid
01:43mainly because my hair is really dark. I used to make a joke in that I fit into the
01:48pickles family like Tommy pickles do pickles just because my hair was so
01:52dark that it was almost blue at times and so now I'm in a transition time I'm
01:57going to business school in the fall I'm about to go on vacation in a few days and
02:01I'm ready to try something different. The back of the hair is going to be in knotless braids.
02:06I'm actually doing a specific style called the diamond parts and then back of her hair
02:12just give her a little more pop. With knotless you have to separate them in tiny
02:16little small pieces. Now the whole fully braiding look is essentially to give it
02:22more diversity in wearing your hair either clones in the front bars in the
02:26back with a half up half down look a full down look or a full you know pulled
02:32back ponytail look. I had tried a bunch of different things going into college I
02:37had heat damage I cut my hair shoulder length I had dyed it got damaged cut it
02:45again and so now I'm just trying to understand what are the best ways to
02:50wear my hair in different styles. I usually will do something that is a
02:55little easier a little more practical a little lower effort. I want to try new
03:01things so that I can really you know reach the full potential of what my hair
03:05has to offer. There's such thing called Ghanaian braiding and for most
03:10Africans West Africans of that we know Ghanaian braiding that's the feeding braids or tree
03:15braids. The technique of feeding the braids the hair in has transformed into an
03:19under feeding rather than an over feeding and so it gives it a more natural
03:23appearing looking braids where it starts off really small at the beginning and
03:28then goes and gets thicker towards the end of the braid. We're doing the same
03:31technique just a different way with knotless braiding you're feeding in tiny
03:35little slits of braiding hair till the braids get to a certain desired size and of course length.
03:41And to finish I'm gonna tie off her hair in the end of her braid and we're gonna just dip
03:45in hot water
03:46to give it that smooth finish.
03:50Up your eyes. It's so cute. Oh my goodness.
03:59I really like this hair. I think it is more than what I wanted it to be. I had no
04:06idea what the style
04:07would look like on me and I think it looks so sleek it looks really really really cool.
04:13I'm in love with my forehead like it's not too big it's just the right size.
04:18I really like the color. I was really nervous seeing the hair straight out of the pack. It was
04:25very colorful and and as I mentioned my hair is very dark and so I was worried what the blending
04:31would
04:32look like but Kiki did a great job of just naturally blending from the root to the tip and it
04:38really is
04:39a great look. There are a lot of braids but it doesn't feel like a lot of braids. I think
04:44the knotless
04:45helps it feel a little more natural a little more weightless. It looks really good. I could go to the
04:51grocery store. I could go to the bar. You know COVID precautions in place but I'm really excited
04:59uh with how this turned out. Thank you for watching Refinery29. For more videos click here. To subscribe click here.
