When it comes to beauty, we all have (at least) one big fear. Sometimes, though, all we need to take the plunge into uncharted beauty territory is some solid guidance (and, okay, maybe a little hand-holding). Today, with the help of makeup artist James Vincent, our very own Vanessa is confronting her deepest beauty fear: that bright, loud eyeshadow will make her look like Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.

See what happens as he guides her through the secrets of blue eye makeup, one bold layer at a time. Will she end up looking like Mimi? Will her remarkably adorable eyelid freckle still show? And, once it's done, can she learn to bravely flaunt her bright blue lids? Watch now to find out.

00:00Can I touch your mustache?
00:01Yes, you can.
00:07So you know eye shadow.
00:10I'm really terrified of it.
00:11I feel like there are two big reasons why I'm so afraid of colorful eye shadow.
00:15The first is that whenever I put it on, I feel like I look like Mimi from the Drew Carey
00:21show.
00:22And the other is that I have this remarkably adorable freckle on my right eyelid and I
00:27don't want to cover it up that much.
00:28I think one of the things that you've got to do if you're afraid of color is figure
00:32out how to make it work for you.
00:34One of my favorite trends for the next season is bringing bright color shadow as an eyeliner
00:40onto the eye.
00:41So the first thing that I'm going to do is choose what color we're going to go with and
00:45I'm going to bring blue onto your eye and I know a lot of people would stay away from
00:49that after your blue eye shadow fear and the fact that you've got beautiful blue eyes.
00:54But what I want to do is something that feels on trend and timeless and really brings out
01:00the shape and color of your eye and balances off the whole complexion.
01:04So I'm starting with a bold kind of deepened blue azure blue liner pencil and I'm bringing
01:11it right along that lash line.
01:14If you were to use this all over the eye it might be very overwhelming but what I'm going
01:19to do is take it on a small liner brush and just line it right above the pencil line that
01:24we just created.
01:26And then I'm going back in with a larger buffing brush and I'm just setting it with a bit of
01:30powder just to stop it transferring.
01:33So we're done with the liner and it's really easy and simple and an alternative to bringing
01:38that bright color all over the eye.
01:40I'm going to finish this with a bit of mascara.
01:42You want to make sure you get that mascara right to the root of these bright colors because
01:46that's going to give you more definition.
01:49Okay, I think I can do it.
01:51I know you can do it.
01:51You're really good at explaining things.
01:52I'm super nervous but also excited like do I look kind of runway on my left side right
01:57now?
01:58I think you do.
01:59I know you can do this.
02:01That is perfect.
02:03The next step is bringing in the bold blue shadow.
02:06Oh god, I ruined it.
02:08Maybe I didn't.
02:09Because you already have mascara on you just need to build it up at the root and that's
02:13what's going to give you that long lash look.
02:16Oh, I think I touched my eyelid.
02:20Oh, do I look rooted?
02:21I think you do.
02:23And do you see how that gives you a little more definition and balance with that bright
02:25color?
02:26I feel like you're watching over me.
02:27Like nothing can go wrong.
02:28Your guardian makeup artist.
02:29My guardian makeup artist.
02:30Thank you so much for showing me these eye tricks.
02:33I feel much better about eye shadow.
02:34I feel like this looks normal and not meme-y as I've been saying.
02:38I'm really excited.
02:38I'm just going to like sashay out of here.
02:40I love that.
02:40I'm going to be really Beyonce about it.
02:42I'm going to worry about it.
02:43I think that's a great way to approach a bright colored eye.
02:46Me too.
02:47Thanks for watching Refinery29.
