It's a common misconception that when creating the infamous smoky eye, black and gray are the obvious (and only) choices. We're over that and are ready for a new spin on the go-to going-out eye. Fortunately, CK One Color global makeup artist Kayleen McAdams shares our passion for the unconventional. Her updated take on this classic look incorporates a whole lot of purple — a great unexpected color for fall — plus a hint of metallic to add a textured flair. It's perfect for a night out and can be done in five minutes (yes, really). Watch the video above to see just how easy it is to recreate this stunning smoky eye.

00:00Ready?
00:00I'm ready.
00:06Hi, I'm Kaylee McAdams, CK One Color Global Makeup Artist, and I'm here with Rachel, and
00:13I'm going to show you how to do a metallic eye with a modern twist.
00:17I'm going to start with the eyeliner first.
00:19You want to make sure you line really close to the root of the lashes.
00:22You can see on the top, I brought the liner a little bit outside the lash line, and this
00:28is to give it that elongated feel.
00:30At the bottom, you can line it up with that.
00:33And I'm going to use a matching purple eyeshadow to set the eyeliner.
00:38I'm using this eggplant shimmery purple.
00:41Don't choose anything with big chunks of glitter when you're using it all over the eye like
00:46this, but a little bit of shimmer really helps to capture the light and bring a lot of dimension
00:51to your eye.
00:51I'm using a short brush with really stiff bristles.
00:55It's going to deposit a lot of color, and you can go right on top of the liner.
01:00And I'm really pressing the color in.
01:03And then for the bottom, I'm going to use an angled brush just because it's a lot more
01:08narrow and so I really want to get it between the lashes on the bottom.
01:12You can see it's kind of a harsh line, and I want to soften that.
01:14So I'm just going to use a fluffy brush and this CK One eyeshadow.
01:18And just deposit a little bit of product on the brush.
01:22So it's really sheer and light, and if you don't apply it very heavily, it's just going
01:27to give you that beautiful glow.
01:29So now to really embrace the metallic trend, I'm going to choose this shimmery green eyeshadow.
01:35I'm not going to put it all over the eye.
01:38The thing that makes this really modern and different is going to be that subtle hint of
01:44metallic on the center of the lid.
01:46And I'm just tapping it on.
01:47Okay, so this is the final look.
01:49My take on a modern metallic eye.
01:51It might look really complicated, but I promise you it's really easy.
01:55Ten minutes max.
01:57Experiment.
01:57Have fun.
01:58Be adventurous.
01:59You can do it.
