00:18Bryson DeChambeau, he makes birdie at the 18th, the post of 66, seven under for the tournament, solo second, or
00:25so we think.
00:26And we then learned shortly after that, the Bryson will potentially be assessed a two shot penalty for improving his
00:33lie on the second shot at the fifth, the par four fifth hole.
00:37What unfolds next Smiley is somewhat unprecedented, right?
00:41We watched live like this was on USA Network unfolding Bryson RNA officials, heated fashion, debating whether or not he
00:49should be penalized right there on the fifth where you hit that second shot.
00:52You observe large parts of this process.
00:55You just broke it down on live from on golf channel.
00:58Just give us the key details of the story through your lens.
01:04Well, we had a plan to go do a preview at the ninth hole and we're going to do some
01:10stuff with the fescue, blah, blah, blah.
01:12Right.
01:13And I had heard something in my ear before we went off coverage that there was something going on in
01:18scoring.
01:18I didn't know exactly what that was.
01:20I was like, what could that possibly be?
01:23So like my brain was already a little bit turned on to a potential violation of sorts, but I didn't
01:29know exactly what it could be.
01:31But I'd actually seen what during one of our commercial breaks, something posted on Twitter with Bryson and a potential
01:37violation, but it didn't.
01:39But it didn't click for me, you know, after the round like that, that's something that they were looking at
01:44and potentially assessing a penalty.
01:45So I immediately, you know, call my producer for live from was like, hey, let's cancel this thing.
01:52We need to go out to the fifth hole.
01:54And at that point, it appeared to me from watching USA Sports that they were going to head out like
02:03they were already on their way.
02:04And I was like, we need to go.
02:06And so we hopped on like we were the mystery machine in Scooby-Doo trying to do a little investigation,
02:11inspect your gadget.
02:13And I tell you what, we come out of the compound and we were about to take a right and
02:18two carts are coming from the left.
02:20And Bryson and I make eye contact.
02:23And we both knew it's like, it's like one of the like, we weren't supposed to make eye contact in
02:30this.
02:31We were supposed to just observe.
02:32And I was like, all right, let's go.
02:35Let's go find.
02:35Let's go find out what's going on.
02:37And we watched that whole thing that everybody else did back home on television.
02:43Just what took place, which is Bryson pleading his case, the, you know, a bit damning video evidence that I
02:52think a lot of people were pointing to.
02:54And so when I watched the whole, you know, scene take place, Bryson was pretty adamant about that there shouldn't
03:01be a penalty.
03:01And as well as his caddy Greg.
03:03Greg, so as soon as everybody cleared out of there and then officially the two shot penalty was was given
03:11to Bryson and that Charlie from the RNA came up and gave that and delivered that news to the media.
03:18You know, they initially had a reaction, Brando and Paul.
03:21And of course, they were very pro two shot penalty in this.
03:24And at that point, we had been down there long enough for me to assess the situation.
03:29We tried to cross reference camera angles, trees, leaves, like we are literally doing a puzzle to try to find
03:38the exact spot.
03:39Yes.
03:40We're trying to nail this thing down.
03:42So we we triangulated the whole thing until we found, you know, being a detective, we found our clue.
03:49We found the chalk line.
03:51We found the divot.
03:52I love this.
03:53And so we we found the divot.
03:55We're like, this is it.
03:56This is where this is where the murder happened.
03:58And so it was Bryson DeChambeau and the fescue ride of the fifth hole with the gap wedge.

04:07So we, you know, we we then, you know, our my producer and I went through all the scenarios.
04:14We went through exactly what we saw Bryson do.
04:17And then we looked at where Bryson hit his shot.
04:21And then we started looking at, you know, his backswing.
04:24Did it touch the fescue?
04:25Would it have touched the fescue?
04:26And so we're doing all of this and, you know, in real time trying to come up with what we
04:32it really wasn't our job to determine whether it was deserved a penalty.
04:38I'm just trying to go through the player standpoint of what what did he have available in that moment, in
04:44that shot that maybe prior to that wouldn't have been an avenue for him.
04:49And could he have just altered his setup to play the shot with the fescue being high?
04:54And so that was my goal on live from and it was a it's a crummy position to be in
05:01because I know people will agree on one thing and then other people see it another way.
05:07So all I tried to do in that situation was just try my best to go in the player's mind
05:14of what what did he have available and would it have been easier to hit it to where Bryson hit
05:21it with a normal backswing versus not a normal backswing.
05:26And I think after doing a little bit of recon doing some practice swings, trying to position the fescue down
05:34versus up, I felt like he could have played the shot originally as intended with the fescue where it was.
05:42He would have had to alter some things and may would have may have had to have played a fraction
05:47further left, but he didn't, you know, in this situation, if it wasn't his tent to knock down the fescue,
05:54he it wasn't needed in this situation.
05:56So I'll start there.
05:58But did he change potentially the situation of his lie and the area of an intended swing by his actions?
06:09I think most people would agree that the fescue was not the same as it was before he got there.
06:16So in that instance, that's where the RNA is on the two shot penalty.
06:20I think most people could see that side of it.
06:23And all I all I'll say is that.
06:26He would have just had to change and alter his swing to hit it where he did.
06:29I hit it.
06:31I kind of caught it a little thin, landed it on the grain.
06:34It was actually an excellent shot by when the fescue.
06:38When it was up, you know, that's where I'm good.
06:41Like, these are the situations that I can get out of.
06:44So it's not acting like this is something like right.
06:46Miss off the tee.
06:46That's the happy spot, right?
06:48This is this is it.
06:50And honestly, I think they even asked me this.
06:52It's like Paul.
06:53He did.
06:54He said, like, was he lucky to find the golf ball?
06:59Absurdly luckily to find that golf ball.
07:01And he ended up making a five anyways.
07:03He probably would have made a five on his provisional ball.
07:06I know he pulled it left, but still.
07:09And he probably in this instance wish he didn't find the golf ball.
07:11So he didn't have to deal with any of this.
