LaPorta will be a full go for Detroit Lions training camp.
Transcript
00:00All right, so last night in the broadcast,
00:02they had a lot to say about Scooble and the Tiger situation.
00:04If you missed it, it was really interesting,
00:06and we'll play some of it for you coming up here in the noon hour.
00:10In the meantime, good news for the Lions yesterday.
00:12Sam Laporta is back, and it's been cleared to start practice.
00:17That's huge.
00:18Huge for this team.
00:21Yeah, he's a vital part of this offense.
00:25I get a little nervous when it's a back injury to a player
00:29because those things are really hard to truly fully recover from
00:34and expect to have a nice long career, but he's young enough,
00:37so I love that he's going to be back full force here.
00:41But it begs a bigger question, and that is do the Lions extend him or not?
00:48Yeah.
00:49Because he's entering this fourth year in his career,
00:54and he was a second-round pick, so it's a four-year deal.
00:58You've got to start talking about extending.
01:01And I'm not sure if I'm willing to do that.
01:04This is the model that they've had when it comes to giving out contracts.
01:12They've eschewed going the free agent route for instead giving the extensions
01:17to the guys they know, the guys on this team.
01:20And it doesn't look sexy, but the numbers are there, man.
01:23Again, monster contracts and extensions have been going to have to Jared Goff,
01:28Amon Ross St. Brown, Penne Sewell, Aiden Hutchinson, Lee McNeil.
01:34I mean, it's just a handful of players there and still have to see what happens
01:39with Jameer Gibbs.
01:40They gave one to Jamison Williams.
01:43They gave one to Jack Campbell.
01:45So what happens with Jameer Gibbs?
01:47What happens with Sam Laporta?
01:49These are the next guys that you have to consider.
01:51Then you've got the defensive backs that are really up in the air.
01:54What do you do with Kirby Joseph and Brian Branch?
01:57Yeah.
01:59You hope that everybody's so healthy you've got this problem, right?
02:02You hope that everybody is so healthy and productive that you're going to have
02:06to at some point start using franchise tags and probably let somebody you don't want
02:11to let go, go, but...
02:12And when you think about last season and the Lions missing in the playoffs last season,
02:17the one thing that doesn't come to mind to me is, oh, Laporta missed half the season,
02:22but he did.
02:23He only played nine games last year.
02:26And that's kind of stunning when you go back and think about that,
02:30when you think about how important he is.
02:32He was a rookie, he had 86 catches.
02:35The next year he had 60.
02:36Last year he had 40 through nine games.
02:38He was on pace for probably a 70 catch, a 75 catch season there.
02:43He's really important to the offense, as we know, and Jared Goff really trusts him.
02:49So, it's a tough situation because at some point, the Lions are going to have to make
02:54that really tough decision of who gets extension and who doesn't, because they're going to
02:59run out of money to give extensions to.
03:01Yep.
03:02Laporta's such a big part of a team that if they're going to do anything, they're going
03:08to do it because their offense is elite.
03:12Their defense, you hope, can just serve as an impediment, a speed bump for opposing offenses.
03:20And I'm okay with this.
03:21Look, I don't want to have a bad defense, but in this day and age, I'd rather have a
03:24great offense than a great defense.
03:25I used to be a defense wins championships guys and a guy, and then last few years, I'm
03:31like, you know what?
03:32In this league, this trend, you got to have a high powered offense.
03:36And I'm not, not a one-to-one ratio, but most of the teams that are now really super
03:42competitive, that's what's carrying the day is their offense.
03:45Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
03:47So, good health from Laporta and Blake Miller and Petsing being two critical, critical pieces
03:54of this team.
03:55Obviously, Blake Miller, the rookie tackle, and Drew Petsing, the new OC.
04:00Big storyline.
04:01Yeah.
04:01Play itself out there in training.
04:02And look, the Lions did not draft the tight end.
04:06This was a draft I thought that they could look at tight end.
04:09They didn't draft the tight end.
04:11If you look at their roster, they've got several tight ends on the roster, but the guys you
04:17know are going to be there are Sam Laporta, Brock Wright, and Tyler Conklin.
04:21Are any of these other guys that they have there, are they going to make it or not?
04:26Which doesn't seem like that would be the case unless there's an injury.
04:29Two, four, eight, five, three, nine, 97, 97.
04:31We've got open lines.
04:32Let's get back to your calls.
04:33Sam is next on 97.1.
04:35Hello, Sam.
04:37Hey, good afternoon.
04:38So, for the Tigers, I kind of agree with both of you guys.
04:41Doug, you're in the wait and see camp.
04:44And Gator, as far as the injury, I'm also with you.
04:48I don't really care about the injury.
04:50It's old news.
04:51I do think that the Tigers will get to the playoffs for your poll.
04:55I think they'll make it in.
04:57And I think they should buy and, you know, bolster the team because you'll have better
05:02chance with Scooble on the team.
05:05And then, Doug, I'm surprised you didn't ask Gator if he won the lottery.
05:09Would he appear in an episode with the ski mask girl and the animals?
05:15Gator, would you?
05:16If you could.
05:17I'd be happy to go visit the farm.
05:19Yeah.
05:19He doesn't even need to win the lottery to accept an invitation to do that.
05:22No, I don't.
05:24And then, you know, Doug, I called in when Gator was gone.
05:27Here's another one for you, Gator.
05:28Because the World Cup is in Spain.
05:31I told Doug, you know, I would like to go running with the bulls in Spain.
05:36Oh, yeah.
05:36He said no.
05:38You wouldn't do it, Doug?
05:39You wouldn't do it, Gator?
05:40Would you run with the bulls?
05:41No.
05:42No?
05:43No.
05:43The bull would catch up.
05:45Well, they catch up to everybody.
05:47The bull would be waiting for me.
05:48I'm like, that's not happening.
05:49Do you think the bull would come for you?
05:50Yeah.
05:51The bull wouldn't believe you're 225?
05:53No.
05:55Listed weight?
05:56Yeah.
05:56No, I wouldn't list a 225.
05:59We have so much.
06:00I've never had a desire my entire life to run with the bulls.
06:04I'm not an adrenaline junkie, and that's what that's for.
06:07That's not me.
06:08You're not going to find that for me.
06:11I don't want to bungee jump.
06:12So I was thinking about the things that I do, mountain biking, which is on trails, and
06:18skiing, I mean, I'm in control, right?
06:23As much as you can.
06:23As much as I can be.
06:25Does that make me an adrenaline junkie?
06:27I don't think it really, I'm not doing it for the adrenaline.
06:30Well, are there trails you won't go down?
06:32Like, if you go out to Aspen, are you going to go on the double diamond, black diamond, or whatever?
06:36There's a couple of even trails around here where I'm like, eh, I don't think I'm going
06:40to do that one today.
06:41You don't strike me as an adrenaline junkie.
06:42No.
06:44And then the skiing, sometimes I get into the trees a little bit, but that's, I don't know
06:51if there's anywhere.
06:52There's probably a couple times where I've done some things on skis where I'm like, maybe
06:55I shouldn't have done that.
06:57But, uh, regarding a cater Montero, dude, I got to reel them in.
07:02I got to, they're scared the hell out of me.
07:04Uh, regarding, uh, cater Montero listed at 145 pounds, the lightest player in major league
07:10baseball, uh, feedback coming in.
07:13Sophie Cunningham is listed at six, one, one 56.
07:16She's pretty skinny.
07:17Just saying it's from an unnamed texter, uh, Don and Toledo.
07:22Did cater answer the question using the metric system instead of pounds?
07:28Well, that would put him at, uh, you know, like 350 pounds right now.
07:33I don't think he weighs that much.
07:34No.
07:34145.
07:35He's roughly 10 stone, right?
07:39Isn't a stone.
07:40My stone conversion rate.
07:42I don't know.
07:43Uh, Don also asked, how was your mud hand experience?
07:46Doug, other than the game where nothing happened, it was great.
07:49The stadium's great.
07:50The surrounding area is awesome.
07:52Where'd you sit?
07:53Uh, well, friend had a suite.
07:55Oh, nice.
07:56Yep.
07:56It was awesome.
07:57Very nice.
07:58Yep.
07:58First base side, third base side, first base side, right about first base.
08:01Locked in on Clark and Anderson and they went combined one for eight.
08:05And I was kind of, I want to, I want to see Clark play the field.
08:08I want to see like some challenging.
08:11Does he look like he just glides out there?
08:13I will say, you know, even on a, on a pop, a foul pop out that he had, I think
08:18it was
08:18his first at bat.
08:19And I'm like, you can tell he can run, but anyway, Don, I loved it.
08:24I'll go back.
08:25Can he play like Pete Crow Armstrong out there?
08:28I think he's going to be much better than that.
08:32No, I hope so.
08:33I'm joking.
08:34Yeah.
08:34It'd be great.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Nothing like doing, doing a kid, a real sod and creating unrealistic expectations.
08:40Good job, Doug.
08:41Uh, might've been his rookie weight.
08:43Just like a water Valencia was listed at one 80.
08:45That might've been his left leg.
08:49Yeah.
08:49I think it was his rookie weight rookie.
08:51Like as a 16 year old, I think when he told him when he weighed 145 or they weighed him
08:55at when he signed as a international free agent at 16 years old, they might've weighed
09:02145 then.
09:03But, uh, Julia says when I joined the Navy, I was six to wait 135 pounds, had to get a
09:09weight
09:10waiver 40 years later, 192 pounds.
09:15There you go.
09:17Uh, people asking a lot of questions.
09:20Would you start your own liquor or alcohol brand?
09:23Scott, if you hit the lottery lottery, uh, you know, before I would have said no, but I've
09:30seen some videos lately, uh, that really annoyed me from like some, there's this tequila snob
09:36woman who does these Tik TOK videos by tequila.
09:40And my thought has always been, if you like something good for you, you know, don't tell
09:45somebody what they should like and why they should like it.
09:48If you like the taste of something, you like the taste of something.
09:52So that got me kind of inspired because she, she picked out a couple of brands in particular
09:56that, that I enjoy.
09:57And I'm like, you know what?
09:57Screw you.
09:58I, you know what?
09:59Yeah.
09:59We'll have Gator tequila.
10:00I'll come up with something like that.
10:01There you go.
10:01Uh, all right.
10:02What's some MLB insiders are saying about the tiger's question with the trade deadline
10:07looming here, what they had to say in the noon hour.
10:09Are you going to eat that at 12 35 97 one.
