ARE the Red Sox officially World Series contenders?? Expectations were high to start the season. Where are the expectations now? Do Sox still need to add before they are true contenders? Or are they contenders as is?
Transcript
00:00Wiggy, you didn't say you were happy with the Red Sox just being a wild card team.
00:05Did you?
00:06Somebody's texting in furiously.
00:07No, I said that my expectations are that they get to the ALCS.
00:11Okay, that's what I thought.
00:14Somebody's like, what an absolute simp Wiggy is if he's happy with the wild card where they were last year.
00:21No, that's not what you said at all.
00:24I think that you have high expectation and your lead this morning, high expectation when it comes to the Patriots.
00:30Yeah.
00:31Like it's failure if it's not ALCS.
00:34Right.
00:35From your perspective.
00:35I look at this team and I look at because going into this season, the expectation was, oh, this team's
00:43good enough to make it to the World Series.
00:44What a simp.
00:47That was the expectation of this team going into this season.
00:51And I've always been that they've had the talent, like the talent didn't change going into the season.
00:57It's been the same guys.
00:59It's just where they were struggling is the guys that they had expectations to be above average major league hitters
01:07weren't doing that.
01:09Your rotation has been good all year long.
01:12Just your whole pitching staff has been good all season long.
01:17Your hitting is now kind of starting to maybe find its groove a little bit.
01:21And the guys that, you know, maybe we didn't expect much from or we didn't know, like guys have come
01:28out of nowhere.
01:29When we've seen guys like, you know, Siegler, you know, Flock of Siegels come out of nowhere.
01:33And you've seen some of these other players like Durbin has kind of turned that corner around.
01:39You know, expectations were that he would be a solid major league hitter.
01:43And he's showing that, okay, that's what he's been able to do here of late.
01:48So you start to look at this team.
01:50And I always talk, you know, I've always been told from the baseball experts, people who know way more about
01:56baseball than I do,
01:57that the playoffs and postseason is about pitching.
02:01And when you have one of the best rotations when it comes to ERA, you have one of the best
02:06rotations when it comes to not even rotations,
02:09but just pitching staff when it comes to not giving up home runs.
02:13Like you start to go, all right, why?
02:17And then you look around at the rest of the AL.
02:20Well, this team is just as good as anybody else.
02:23Yeah.
02:24So my expectation.
02:24They have been of late.
02:26They have been just as good.
02:27Like you went on a 15 game run against good teams that you are going to face should you get
02:37to the playoffs.
02:38So you ought to be able to continue that.
02:43And they've done it without Garrett Crochet and they've done it without Roman Anthony, whatever your expectation was.
02:49I would ask this question here to everybody in the room.
02:52And people listening is what we've seen from this team over the past several weeks.
02:59You know that I know you love him.
03:01He's your number one emcee of all time.
03:03And when he says, well, the real Slim Shady, please stand up.
03:07Right.
03:08Is this the real Red Sox team that you have seen for the last three weeks?
03:12Versus what we saw, you know, the first couple months of the season.
03:17And I think that this is, you know, the 15 game win streak.
03:22Yeah, that's great.
03:23But I think that this is more of what we expected from this Red Sox baseball team.
03:31And I don't think if any, if there's somebody out there is like, nah, nah, this ain't really them.
03:36Well, call up and tell me why.
03:37Because you don't perform like this and play as good as they've been playing against good baseball teams when this
03:45is, what do they say, them just getting lucky.
03:48Well, here's a 978 text.
03:50It's not even August yet.
03:51And, Wiggy, four of those pitchers have never had or have never been successful full major league season.
04:02Well, I mean, I don't know that that's when he was talking about four of those pitchers.
04:06Who is he talking about?
04:07Is he talking about Tully, Early Bennett?
04:10Jake Bennett.
04:12You're talking about Sandoval?
04:14I don't know.
04:14I mean, Suarez, Gray, and Crochet have all been, had legitimate seasons in the MLB.
04:19Right.
04:19And I don't look at like, oh, I look at it like if you're performing like this, my expectations are
04:25nothing changes when you get to the postseason.
04:28Have that same mindset.
04:30Yeah.
04:30This is Mike from East Long Meadow.
04:34Good morning, Mike.
04:36Hi, guys.
04:36How are you?
04:37Good.
04:38Greetings, please.
04:40We are being shadowed this morning by our queen.
04:43If you could, just a quick hello to her in the background, please.
04:46Okay.
04:47Hello.
04:47Hello.
04:48Okay, good.
04:48Go ahead.
04:50She appreciates that.
04:51Just a quick, a little criticism of Wiggy, only because this is not the team that they started the year
04:57with that they had these high expectations for.
04:59There is no Roman Anthony.
05:01There is no Myers.
05:03There is no Campbell.
05:05All I'm saying, their pitching has been great, no question.
05:08But what they did for 14 weeks versus what they did for three weeks, I think they're somewhere in the
05:15middle.
05:15It'll be interesting to see what happens moving forward.
05:20But, you know, an old-timer once told me, you're never as good as you look when you're winning or
05:26as bad as you look when you're losing.
05:28They're somewhere in the middle.
05:29Mike, I would also say, but that team that we saw at the beginning of the season was Willia Abreu,
05:36was Sadon Raffaello, was Caleb Durbin.
05:40Was Wilson Contreras.
05:41Was Jaron Duran.
05:42Jaron Duran.
05:43Was Yoshida.
05:44So, there are guys that have been contributing and that have come up and that we've seen here of late.
05:50But, you know, Monasterio has been here the whole season.
05:54So, there's a lot of guys that have been here that are now, some of them are getting back to
06:01what they probably normally are.
06:06Main texter, you guys are all falling for this again.
06:09The 15-game win streak was exciting, but this team is junk.
06:14Okay.
06:16But I would ask these people, okay.
06:18See, I don't think the team, real quick.
06:21The team was playing like junk.
06:23They were not constructed like junk heading into the season.
06:27We all looked, when we were crying and whining about it, we were like, oh, Breslau blew it when it
06:34comes to the roster.
06:35But they are now playing where they should be.
06:39And Chad Tracy, oh, before you hung up on that guy.
06:43Chad Tracy was talking about the at-bats and the offense and the way that they have been able to
06:49manufacture things and are not relying just on dongs.
06:56So, save that.
06:58Well, even when this team was losing, Greg, Craig Breslau was on here telling you that this team was better
07:03than their record.
07:04And the nerds would have told you, look at the run differential.
07:07They still have a positive run differential for how bad that team was prior to this win streak.
07:11Now, they have the second-best run differential in the entire American League.
07:15I think you've played enough games.
07:17And this is why I would ask the people who don't believe in this team, right?
07:20They've played enough games.
07:22And you stacked up, coming out of the all-star break, against the best team on paper in the AL
07:29in the Tampa Bay Rays.
07:31And you swept them.
07:33And you were able to line up with them, you know, hitter for hitter, pitcher for pitcher.
07:39And I always hear Jones and Keith talking about this, and they probably know a lot more than I do.
07:44You know, when they start to look at the Tampa Bay Rays and they start to say, look at their
07:48talent.
07:49Okay, so they get the kid Yandy Diaz, like, who's an unbelievable player.
07:53And I think they said one more player that they really like.
07:55But if you look at that team, right, who in that lineup are you going, oh, that's why you can't
08:02compete with the Tampa Bay Rays.
08:06Oh, you can't compete with the New York Yankees.
08:08Like, I think, all right, Aaron Judge is a great player.
08:11Yeah, but you don't know when he's coming back.
08:12And they have a very similar rotation to what you have.
08:17Like, you can't deny that the Yankees don't have a great rotation.
08:21Right, but so do you.
08:22You have a guy like, I think, I think a lot of people look at Wilson Contreras and go, all
08:28right, he's a dangerous hitter.
08:29He's somebody in the Boston Red Sox lineup that we have to be worried about.
08:34And then you got all these other guys in the lineup that have basically been here all season long that
08:39are now hitting above what we, when we saw them, we go like, that's not who they are.
08:45And they're starting to hit to what we expect them to be.
08:47This is Ed from my adopted home continent of Maine.
08:50Hello, Ed.
08:51How are you doing, everybody?
08:52Hey, listen, I'm with Wiggy 100%.
08:55First of all, there's 7 billion people on the planet.
08:58800 can play this game at this level.
09:00Tracy's giving these kids the confidence that they need.
09:03And when you said it before, it's, you know, about being a professional athlete, you got to have the confidence
09:08in yourself.
09:10And that's what he's pumping into these kids.
09:12Yeah.
09:12And I think it's fantastic.
09:14Yeah.
09:14I mean, he was, he's impressive.
09:17Like, I had people telling me yesterday, he just answers the question.
09:21He doesn't sit there and think about how he wants to answer the question.
09:25He's, he's really impressive.
09:27So, all right, we will be.
