00:00Sabah Assemblyman Wilfred Madius Tangau has called for Native Courts to be accorded the same constitutional recognition as Sharia Courts.
00:09Tangau said the federal constitution should be amended so that Native Courts are no longer treated as mere tribunals.
00:16Speaking during debate on the Native Court Bill 2026, he said the proposal was not intended to allow Native Courts
00:24to usurp the role of either the civil or Sharia Courts.
00:27Instead, he said it was to give Sabah's customary judicial system the recognition it deserves, in line with the Malaysia
00:35Agreement 1963 and Sabah's position as a founding territory of Malaysia.
00:41Tangau said a court's strength should not be measured by the number of cases it hears but by the public's
00:48confidence in the justice it delivers.
00:50He said Native Courts would only gain the stature they deserve when people are assured their cases will receive a
00:57fair hearing and a just decision.
