00:02President Trump is upping his trade fight with Canada again,
00:07signing off on new 50% tariffs covering billions of dollars in Canadian imports.
00:12The White House says the tariffs target products ranging from machinery and dairy to furniture,
00:18plywood, even hockey sticks. The tariffs would not kick in for 30 days. But unlike previous rounds,
00:24many goods covered by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement would no longer get a pass.
00:29To do it, Trump is dusting off a law from 1930 that gives presidents broad tariff powers.
00:36Trade experts say it has never been used this way before. The move comes just one day after Trump
00:42and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared together at the World Cup final. And days after,
00:48Trump blamed Canada for wildfire smoke that drifted across parts of the Northeast and Midwest,
00:53calling it filthy, dangerous and willful negligence. The administration insists these tariffs
00:59are unrelated to the fires, saying they're instead a response to what it calls Canada's unfair
01:04treatment of American exports. Ontario Premier Doug Ford is urging Canada to hit back, posting on
01:11next, respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar. Ford also had choice words for Trump, speaking to
01:17reporters on Monday.
01:18I've got to remind President Trump that there's 3.9 million acres burning in the United States
01:25right now. And if we had resources, we would send them down to our closest friends and allies.
01:31So, you know something, rather than criticize and threaten Canada, your closest friends,
01:37maybe one day you're going to need our help like you did last year, and we deployed the people.
01:41I get frustrated just listing that bunch of rubbish. Some major imports, including energy,
01:49critical minerals and certain metals, are exempt. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect in 30 days.
