00:01Canada says it is ready to hit back after President Trump's new 50% tariffs.
00:06And today we're expecting to find out how. And the fight is getting personal.
00:10This guy's a loser. He's gonna be a loser. And simple as that.
00:14We're gonna fight with everything we have.
00:16Plus, Trump gets the go-ahead for now.
00:19The Supreme Court lets his mail-in voting plan move forward, but doesn't rule it legal.
00:24And Trump goes all in in South Carolina.
00:27Can he push Lindsey Graham's sister over the finish line?
00:30Or will Republicans choose a five-term congressman?
00:35The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
00:41These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
00:47Good morning, I'm Craig Negrelli.
00:49This morning, Canada is preparing to hit back again with new retaliatory tariffs expected to be announced today.
00:56The announcement comes after President Trump told Canadian leaders to fall in line or face consequences far worse than the
01:04tariffs already in place.
01:06Trade talks collapsed Friday.
01:07And the United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods Saturday.
01:13Then, on Monday, Trump threatened another 50% tariff on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.
01:21Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the Trump administration of wanting to, quote, destroy our major industries.
01:27It's not a surprise for us that the U.S. would take some form of reprisal to our response to
01:37their unjustified tariff, which was on top of other unjustified tariffs.
01:41That's not a surprise.
01:43But what message does that send to the workers in Michigan and Ohio and Kentucky and Alabama, who rely on
01:50Canadian demand?
01:51An attitude at the negotiation table that Canada is a subsidiary of the United States.
01:58The Canadian industry is going to be disadvantaged relative to American industry.
02:05That we're going to set up terms so that over time, Canadian industry is going to face constant headwinds.
02:13That's not something we're going to accept.
02:15Carney says Canada may move away from simply matching U.S. tariffs dollar for dollar and instead target its response
02:23to better protect Canadian workers and businesses.
02:26Canadian officials are also expected to announce new support today for workers hit by the tariffs.
02:32And the fight is getting personal.
02:34Ontario Premier Doug Ford accused Trump of trying to bully Canada, then went after the president directly.
02:40Well, I can go back and forth with Trump.
02:43You know, I'm not going to I'm just not going to take the bait.
02:47This guy's a loser.
02:48He's going to be a loser.
02:50And simple as that.
02:51We're going to fight with everything we have.
02:53And he's actually tariffing his own people, taxing his own people.
02:57And I'm going to make sure I communicate through the U.S. media.
03:01I'm going to be reaching out to every single governor, every single senator and every single congressperson.
03:06And when it comes to the midterms, I have a message to the Americans.
03:10Don't vote in a person that's going to kill your jobs.
03:13That midterm message isn't random.
03:16The trade fight is playing out just months before voters go to the polls with several competitive Senate races in
03:22states that rely heavily on trade with Canada.
03:25The U.S. Supreme Court is giving the Trump administration a green light, at least for now, to move ahead
03:31with key parts of the president's plan to tighten the rules for mail in voting.
03:36The justices ruled six to three Monday to lift a lower court block in a lawsuit brought by 23 Democratic
03:43led states and Washington, D.C.
03:45But the court did not rule on whether Trump's plan is legal.
03:49Instead, the majority said the states sued too soon because the president's executive order itself has not yet hurt them.
03:56The court wrote, quote, the order itself does not harm the states.
04:00So the district court lacked jurisdiction to bar the government from trying to implement it.
04:05And the justices made clear that whatever the administration ultimately does won't necessarily be lawful.
04:11For now, the ruling clears the way for Homeland Security to move forward with a proposal to create state by
04:17state lists of people eligible to vote.
04:19The Postal Service has also published new rules for mail-in ballots, including required envelope designs and data that states
04:27would submit about voters receiving them.
04:30The three liberal justices dissented.
04:33Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote,
04:35Today's decision does not address whether the president's attempts to interfere with states' administration of the November 2026 elections are
04:42lawful.
04:43Nor does it suggest that the executive branch has any constitutional or statutory authority to implement the president's directives.
04:51So the administration can keep moving forward.
04:54But the legal fight over whether these changes can actually take effect is not over.
04:59Iran says it is ready to weather the new wave of U.S. sanctions as the Trump administration threatens to
05:06squeeze not just Tehran,
05:08but countries and companies that keep doing business with it.
05:11Treasury Secretary Scott Besant on Monday unveiled new sanctions targeting digital assets, gold, aviation, technology and shipping,
05:20part of what the administration is calling Operation Economic Outcast.
05:24Besant also warned countries and companies that continue doing business with Iran that they could face penalties of their own,
05:31including being cut off from the U.S. dollar system.
05:34Iran says it has been preparing for the new sanctions for a long time and is ready to face them.
05:40The new restrictions also reach into daily life, affecting some money sent from the United States to family members in
05:46Iran,
05:47while sports and academic exchanges have been suspended.
05:50And the U.S. is tightening the screws on the Strait of Hormuz.
05:54Vessels and companies that comply with Iranian demands for information while traveling through the strait could now face U.S.
06:01penalties,
06:01on top of existing penalties for paying Iranian tolls.
06:06Out West, firefighters are finally gaining ground on the Hawk Fire near Reno, Nevada,
06:11but about 63,000 people are still under evacuation orders or warnings.
06:16Fire has burned more than 15,000 acres northwest of Reno,
06:20but crews have now pushed containment to 27%, mostly along the southern edge near Somerset.
06:26That progress has allowed some people to return home.
06:30But 23,000 residents are still under go-now evacuation orders, with another 40,000 told to be ready to
06:37leave.
06:37The fire has destroyed at least 32 homes and damaged six others,
06:41and officials expect those numbers to rise as damage assessment teams reach more of the burned area.
06:47Four civilians and three firefighters have been injured.
06:50And even with containment growing,
06:52officials warn hot spots could flare back up if the winds increase.
06:56The speed of this fire has been part of the problem.
06:59Washoe County Sheriff Darren Ballum says it raced from the mountain into a nearby neighborhood in about 45 minutes,
07:06as residents were trying to get out and firefighters were trying to get in.
07:10Officials say the fire was human-caused, but have not determined whether it was accidental or intentional.
07:16More than 700 firefighters and other personnel are now on the ground,
07:21including crews from 15 states, Australia, and New Zealand.
07:25Politics now.
07:26South Carolina Republicans vote today in a Senate runoff that has become a big test,
07:31not just for the two candidates, but for President Trump.
07:35Senator Darlene Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham,
07:38faces Congressman Ralph Norman for the Republican nomination.
07:43Graham finished first in this month's special primary,
07:46but fell short of the majority needed to avoid today's runoff.
07:50Graham had never held public office before Governor Henry McMaster appointed her to serve out her brother's term,
07:57following his death last month.
07:58Now she's trying to win a full six-year term, with Trump putting some serious political capital behind her.
08:05Trump flew to Myrtle Beach on Friday to campaign for Graham,
08:09even telling supporters to pretend he was the one on the ballot to get them to the polls.
08:14I elect Senator Darlene Graham to fight, fight, fight for South Carolina and to always put America first.
08:23She only knows how to put America first.
08:25She will be somebody you're going to be very proud.
08:29You vote for her, you're going to be very proud of that vote.
08:32And Trump's political operation is putting money behind that endorsement.
08:36New campaign finance filings show his mega-incorporated Super PAC has spent more than $827,000 on phone calls and
08:45text messages supporting Graham.
08:47It's the Super PAC's first significant spending this year on one of Trump's chosen candidates.
08:52But Norman is no political newcomer.
08:55He's a five-term congressman who finished second in the primary,
08:59and he's trying to turn Graham's lack of experience into a liability.
09:03That argument got some help during last week's debate when Graham struggled with the question about Taiwan.
09:09Today, Republican voters get the final say.
09:12The winner faces Democrat Annie Andrews in November in a state Trump carried by 18 points two years ago.
09:19Polls close tonight at 7 Eastern.
09:22Finally this morning, happy third birthday to Katyusha, the first giant panda ever born in Russia.
09:29Katyusha's parents, Ding Ding and Ru Yi, arrived in Moscow from China back in 2019.
09:35And their daughter has become something of a star, even described by a Chinese diplomat as a special envoy for
09:42cultural exchange between China and Russia.
09:45The birthday girl got a special meal at the Moscow Zoo, complete with a cake and plenty of treats.
09:51Katyusha mugged for the cameras as fans pulled out their phones to capture the celebration.
09:57Chinese officials were there as well, with China's ambassador using the occasion to talk up the relationship between Moscow and
10:03Beijing.
10:04And Katyusha, she seemed much more interested in the birthday treats.
10:08All in all, not a bad panda party.
