00:07As everyone knows, on Monday the U.S. administration announced its intention to impose the latest
00:11in a series of unilateral and unwarranted trade actions.
00:16Let's be clear about how Canada is responding.
00:21Yes, we are intensifying our negotiations with the United States in pursuit of a comprehensive
00:27agreement that addresses all tariff-related sectors.
00:34In all circumstances, irrespective of the outcome of those negotiations, Canada will do whatever
00:41it takes to build our strength at home and to support Canadian families, workers, our
00:47farmers, our businesses.
00:49We're ready.
00:55We're ready because we've been focusing on what we can control.
01:02And that's building our strength at home, buying Canadian, backing Canadian workers, building
01:09Canadians.
01:09That's the resolve of Canadians.
01:11That's the foundation on which we're building.
01:16Please identify yourself and who the question is for.
01:18First question, Kate.
01:22We're a reliable partner in a world that's anything but.
01:24So we're diversifying our partnerships abroad.
01:34Our government, the federal government, has signed more than 20 new economic and security
01:39partnerships because Canada has what the world wants and Canada believes in the benefits of
01:46free and fair trade.
01:48We're also ready because of what we know in our bones.
01:53That our unity is our greatest strength and our destiny is in our hands.
02:02And how you see this window of time of trade talks given the new 30 day deadline, do you think
02:09that this is a meaningful opportunity to approach some sort of end game with the United States
02:13or is it just another pressure tactic from the Trump administration?
02:17It's both.
02:22We all recognize that the most important thing we can do is to continue to build this economy
02:29strong and unite this economy.
02:32That that is that's job one that immediate benefits for Canadians and that is what we can control.
02:41And the second is to be united with respect to our
02:46trade strategy, our negotiating strategy and our objectives.
02:50And part of that unity is recognizing that there isn't a series of little trade issues,
02:55they're broad trade issues.
02:57All of them have to be part of a comprehensive agreement.
03:02Last year you made the decision to remove many counter tariff measures.
03:06So what kinds of trade retaliation measures are you willing to consider now if any?
03:11And is everything on the table if there's no agreement before August 19th?
03:16Everything's on the table if there's no agreement depending on the outcome of the negotiations.
03:20Yes.
03:24I have a question for the prime minister.
03:26You said this morning that the Canadian all these governments would do whatever it takes to defend
03:31and support our families, our business, etc. And I'd like to hear some after three hours of meeting some
03:35specifics counter tariffs are a possibility and so on if you could provide some specifics.
03:40And then two, let's say you get this deal, CUSMA 2 with the President of the United States,
03:45you're going to have to convince a lot of Canadians skeptical of the trustworthiness of the President
03:50that no, no, this time he means it. He'll keep his word this time on CUSMA 2.
03:55How will you explain that the President can be trusted when he signs a document with your name on it?
04:04In terms of doing whatever it takes, there's multiple aspects of that.
04:10First, and I won't repeat the whole element of, but it's building the economy and support.
04:16Like, that's fundamental. It's diversifying our trade relations, it's all that.
04:20Secondly, it is helping those sectors that are affected directly by the tariffs
04:26with financial support, supporting their workers, reorienting
04:34demand for some of their products where that's possible, providing some level of trade protection.
04:45The third is responding. If there is, if these tariffs or other measures come into force
04:55and there's a full range of things that we can do in that regard, we don't need to respond in
05:02advance.
05:03In fact, I think it would be counterproductive.
05:05But we are going to support Canadian families, workers, businesses, full stop.
05:16There are other things we could have done in the intervening
05:20time that we didn't do in agreements, perhaps because of the nature of your question.
05:32Prime Minister, earlier this week, you said that President Trump and yourself agreed to
05:37intensify trade talks. Did the President signal to you a willingness to drop the latest tariffs
05:43tariffs if you reach a deal before August 19th?
05:49Well, we are in negotiations for adjustments in all the tariffs and trade measures with the United States.
