00:02Canada just got an invitation to move a lot closer to Europe. President Trump's response,
00:07he says that could be a hostile act and he's threatening Europe with more tariffs if that
00:12happens. And right now, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is addressing the European Parliament.
00:18The European Union has invited Canada to become its first ever associate member as Canada looks
00:24to reduce its economic dependence on the U.S. And this would be something entirely new.
00:31Associate membership doesn't currently exist in the EU, so the two sides would have to negotiate
00:36what it actually means. But Europe is already talking big. EU Commission President Ursula von
00:42der Leyen says she wants to take the relationship with Canada to the highest level possible with
00:48closer tides on trade, technology, energy, critical minerals, and defense. Trump called
00:55the idea laughable and said what happens next depends on Europe's intentions.

01:06trading with Europe on many things. So if they do that, if Europe does that, with a bad intention,
01:13if it's a good intention, that's fine. If it's a bad intention, we'll put very heavy tariffs on
01:18Canada is already in a trade war with the U.S. and roughly 70 percent of its exports still
01:24come here. Carney has been pushing to change that and build much closer economic and security
01:30ties with Europe. The next big step comes next month when Canada hosts EU leaders for a summit
01:36in Montreal where this new relationship is expected to be on the table.
