00:47or sanger first i know that's right um i grew up um singing definitely in the choirs but i was

00:54i was really um shy so it took me a while to come out of my shell um i've been

01:01like backgrounds for people just learning my craft you know what i'm saying trying to get you know
01:08better the greatest edit um so that's where i started um so it's giving church choirs so you
01:24listened to growing up obviously you're a church girl but if we were listening to deanna at like
01:29what eight years old what were you playing in your hair your head or like what was playing in the
01:34household so we can get a vibe of what you were listening to okay okay so i guess um starting
01:40out
01:40i would hear uh the clark sisters and i would hear like the harmonies and i'm like man if i
01:46could just
01:47pick out one note and then perfect it and then i could probably figure out everything else so that's
01:53kind of what i did i had the ear for music um rather than someone teaching me so it it
01:59just kind of came
02:00naturally and then my my family are they're musicians as well so it was kind of you know in the
02:07basement
02:07and you know you take a listen and get better and better and i'm like okay i think i got

02:13i love the whole family is a musician so does everyone sing or do they play instruments like
02:18what's the vibe so my dad um my dad is a pastor as well um he teaches choirs well he
02:26used to teach
02:26like choirs um all around the city um and then he started um playing like drums first and then it
02:35was
02:35keys and then my brother plays drums and then my mom sings so it was just you know revolving
02:43so adi and a laurie family band yes that's essentially what the house sounded like i love
02:48it yes fun so when was the moment that you were like okay let me take this seriously because i
02:54feel
02:54like music is always something that starts off as just a passion we we always hear an artist or a

03:01that sparks our love for it but when did you realize okay no no i want to take this seriously
03:06because i'm a singer and i need everyone to hear me sing yeah oh wow oh i would say when
03:12i was singing
03:12really loudly in my bedroom but other than that um that was the start but i would say around the
03:19age
03:19of uh 16 um it i started writing i started writing and just coming up with melodies to beats and
03:27stuff
03:27like that and just got better at that and then someone said uh let's go to the studio because maybe
03:34you you sound like you can hit some notes so i was in the studio at 16 i was recording
03:41songs but
03:42you know i was i was still trying to grow musically yeah so um everything was like slow paced for
03:49me
03:49as well as far as that but but that makes sense because based off of what you've said so far
03:54you're
03:55a student of this like you're not just doing this because there's a love for it it's it's ingrained
04:01in you and you always want to get better so it makes sense why it was a slow matriculation to
04:05the studio but once you got behind that mic girl how did it feel what was the vibe it was
04:09amazing
04:10but i was super shy like starting out just singing in front of people i had to get over that
04:15shyness
04:16and i still i i am a little you know a little shy a little bit but i'm like okay

04:22like people have to hear you this is what you do like i can't i can't do anything else i
04:26don't have a
04:27choice to do anything else like it's just there naturally so i'm like yeah this is this is who i
04:33am this is what i'm going to do i cannot i don't have any other options right oh yeah is

04:38remember the first song that you wrote i'm not gonna ask you to sing it i promise unless you want
04:42to but do you remember the first song that you've ever written um yes i actually do well if you

04:50sing it you can but the question i want to know is from that moment from writing that first song
04:57to writing whatever you've written currently yeah how has that changed do you feel like you're the
05:02same songwriter or do you think that there are different things that you've added like let me know
05:08the trajectory of what you think from the beginning to what you're doing currently okay so i guess the
05:14beginning um lyrically oh wasn't that great we'll start somewhere yeah like i was like okay this is
05:23simple but i did my first song that i wrote i think it was like um you want to get

05:30to get this right but you seem like it too slow baby i'm ready right now and it was like

05:41gotta that's that's what i came up with first um as far as the hook and then i wrote everything

05:46after that but um is that out now or is that in the vault or you know it's actually on

05:54it's it's but it's it's old it's a little um dust on it you know they can see where you've

06:01your roots yes yes so that was that was a great start for me but that was literally the only

06:06probably ever put out so i am like rebranding and you know just as an artist coming out again
06:15and what does that rebrand look like for you now and what is what is this era speaking for you
06:20um poise um vibrance um very intentional because at first like when i first started i was you know
06:30nervous shy and i just didn't know but i'm very intentional now like every note is going to be
06:36intentional every word is going to be intentional lyrically it's going to be intentional you know
06:41what i'm saying i'm going to mean what i say um type of thing so yeah now that i think
06:45that's the
06:46difference yeah are you sticking in the r&b space or are you adding more like influences in there like

06:52want to i want to get an understanding and a vibe of where we're going with this new era
06:56i would love to actually like i don't mind i i sing everything like um also growing up i've sang

07:05funerals weddings just parties special engagements like things like that helped me learn like
07:11different lanes of where i can go like but i'll sing a ballad like whitney i just i just just

07:18just like she'll give you a ballad and then she'll just give you some
07:23like some michael jackson feeling types so i i think all of that disney like
07:30listen you have the voice for it so disney didn't call you listen i'm ready i'm ready for all of

07:40is because i was blessed with tickets shout out to motown amplify they blessed me with some tickets i
07:44went there i didn't know what i was getting myself into i knew it was a singing competition i knew

07:49my main man terrell grice was in the building the toy of luck it was in the building miss kiki
07:53herself
07:54was in the building so i was like okay clearly there's gonna be some singers because if they're
07:58there it's gonna be good and everyone did an amazing do not get me wrong but when baby you walked
08:04out in that full white ensemble i said oh she's coming for everything and i don't even know what
08:09she's singing yet then once that beat we all know the iconic be your baby tonight i said oh
08:17hey i said hold on now wait hold on hold on she might she might got something in her and
08:24then there
08:24was an older man sitting next to me and we all started like moving really sitting closer in our
08:29seats oh my god so once you walked out there was a video that played that obviously you just explained
08:34that you were a little nervous and you're more of a shyer person yeah and this was your experience
08:39to really get out of your fear yes what take us through that moment where you are stepping on that
08:44stage and you know that people are at soundboard about to hear you this is a competition you're
08:50coming for everything that you deserve but how do you push past that fear in that moment like take
08:55me through what you were thinking before you walked out i hate to say this like uh almost like you
09:02black out but it's something within you that just it clicks and turns on um when it's time time to
09:10like get down to business yeah um and then that's that's when that moment kicks in where you have to
09:15tell yourself this is what i do like this is who i am you're great at these things like you
09:23have to
09:23like literally walk yourself through it prepared for this yes you know what i'm saying just giving
09:29yourself all of the encouragement but you have to you know think that you have to think that and
09:34once that all clicked i i really told myself that i heard the audience and then i heard the music
09:40and
09:40then it just clicked i was like okay this is what you do don't even overthink it don't think about
09:46it
09:46just do it it felt like that it felt like you had locked into a different plane like i'm telling

09:52that room the energy in that room i felt it it was palpable why why whitney because whitney is not

09:59of them girls you play with okay auntie was up in heaven being like i'm waiting to see what you're
10:04gonna do so why be my baby tonight like what what drew you to that song obviously you have love
10:09for
10:09whitney but why did you choose that song for this competition i chose that song because i wanted to
10:14challenge myself um before this competition i would sing a lot sing a lot and sing everywhere
10:23but i wasn't singing and dancing and moving and like really entertaining so i told them like
10:30this is what i want to do this is what i wanted to look like this is how i wanted
10:33to feel because i'm
10:34a feeling kind of person so i needed everybody to feel every movement every like i said it was in
10:40it's intentional you know what i'm saying so um i uh i wanted to challenge myself and and dance and
10:46that was like the hardest song for me to sing baby i'm like oh oh my god i'm really about
10:53to sing whitney
10:54like forget the everything else i'm singing whitney i'm like no nobody can sing whitney like she sings
11:03it you know what i'm saying so it was the pressure but i was like i'm myself i'm gonna do
11:08me so i'm
11:09gonna sing it how i sing it you know what i'm saying put a little flavor a little a little
11:13something a little deanna spin on it you know now that was it though like you did that i promise

11:19i can't speak for the queen whitney but i know that she was up there being like yes with her
11:23bob she
11:24was like yes because i i don't i don't know like i again i could just feel the the love
11:29that you have
11:30for what you do the love for her and the respect that you had for her the respect for that
11:35having the
11:35opportunity to be on that stage it looked like you were just even if you didn't win that night
11:40i felt like you were just really happy to be in front of people and on a stage and just
11:45living in
11:46your fullest so literally then when they came back later and said your name as the official artist of
11:53the year what went through your brain girls like i was in shock when they act they started asking me
11:59questions and i was like i'm just happy like i know everybody was kind of looking like what like
12:06what else but no i was really genuinely proud of myself for getting out there and overcoming that
12:13fear because i'm like oh my god what if i get up there and i fall or something like just
12:18look stupid
12:19but no that was a fear of mine and i overcame it and yes you should definitely be proud of
12:25yourself
12:25for sure with motown amplify is there like a process that you go through before the actual
12:32event and the competition of it all because i know that we saw videos but for people who weren't there
12:36is there like a process that you go through like what what did you have to do to even become
12:40a part
12:41of motown amplify so you have to audition and after you audition you get like an email like saying whether
12:49you made it or not um and um what was that email and then you come in as like a
12:57group like there's
12:58like 10 other people beside yourself and you meet everyone that basically auditioned and made it
13:06um and then after that they tell you there's like a month of like rehearsing just molding getting you
13:15into the person that you want to artist development yes good artist development um so we had a vocal
13:22coach and then we had um tristan which he's really everything to me i'm like it's not just one title
13:30that you have for him he's like literally everything but he he helped me through every trial and tribulation
13:38i didn't cry and get up i'm like okay he like you got this i'm like okay i got this
13:44now let's do what
13:45you came to do we're gonna help you dance we're gonna help you move and sing and breathe in
13:50everything everything that i need to help with so that what do you think was one of the the most
13:55um
13:56something that you didn't realize that you needed to learn that tristan or whoever a part of the
14:01amplified team really helped you with oh something i did not know hmm breathing that's real you don't
14:10realize how much breathing is really impactful and you don't learn it the proper way without
14:16someone actually teaching it to you so yes breathing and then you you have to just do things um do
14:23do
14:23things through naturally first and then kind of critique yourself but not critique yourself in
14:29a way that is making you feel like you can't you know accomplish it but you know not downplaying
14:35yourself but just you know fine tuning yes yeah i would say do everything naturally and then fix
14:41one by one what you want to fix and do it step by step like that and i i just
14:46think that's how
14:46you get better you know at what you want to do beautiful okay so now what what's next girl like

14:53how we getting music girl because i'm waiting i need to be able to press play on my spotify like

14:58doing i am hoping to put out a ep before the year ends now but right now i am working
15:09on a single
15:10with a great producer you don't have to tell me yeah you don't have to tell me later later no
15:17but um
15:18i am working on a single right now and i also have a couple of gigs coming up um do

15:24about them or are they able to be shared okay sure now can i look up absolutely absolutely um because
15:31i don't i don't want to uh lie to anybody here um but it's so my gig is on the
15:3720th and it's from
15:39three to seven now the address you guys i want to say it's uh on dexter
15:50it's one three two zero zero dexter avenue if i'm not mistaken but it's for like um juneteenth
15:57and everything like that which is gonna be so perfect do you know what you're singing
16:01you don't have to tell me but you could just you could just tell me yeah i know what i'm

16:05i do i think getting juneteenth freedom yeah yeah that's all i need to know girl we can definitely
16:11you know give it a lot of that you know i love that so now that you've
16:17essentially just gotten into this moment of i guess acceptance and not just acceptance but like
16:23really truly understanding you as an artist and being proud of getting over a fear what is something
16:31next that you want to tackle because i feel like getting over the stage fright getting over the
16:35shyness getting into like a full i'm an entertainer i'm a powerhouse i'm taking over this stage is
16:40obviously a very big feat but is there something else that you feel like you know what i feel like
16:45i really
16:46want to take on this challenge next i want to i want to challenge myself and put myself forward
16:50in this lane hmm like in a different lane whatever it could be the same musically or if
16:56you want to get into film girl like whatever it is okay i thought about fashion like i love me
17:02some
17:03fashion like if i can incorporate that i love fashion so it would probably be anything with fashion
17:10maybe acting a little bit okay do some behind the scenes things music wise maybe on movies and things
17:20like that so i would definitely i definitely want to do that i can't wait to see it i can't

17:26it now we talked about how you're having a single and you're hopefully gonna have an ep by the end

17:32the year yes what do you hope that people feel when they hear a song from deanna lori when they
17:37press that

17:42want them to think how do you want them to move i want them to feel excited like i want

17:48like start hearing like a groove like a something you can bounce to and and just smile and like just

18:03giving i'm giving all the sexy vibes as well so you might end up feeling like you want to drink

18:17to just be moved in different lanes so i'm very very excited to just see how you how you move

18:25industry now one of the last things that i have is in this current chapter we we're talking music if
18:32your life was a soundtrack title because you know whitney love her a good soundtrack waiting to exhale
18:36and all of that the bodyguard and everything if this current chapter was a soundtrack title what would
18:42it be title oh my god um
18:53i love this word but i i would say uh poise like yeah i think it would be called poise

19:08describe poise the way that you are right now that the the aura that you have it's literally the aura
