00:00one on five one a bounce detroit still back here popping r&b it's your boy showtime the czar in
00:04studio with me i have a special guest man um chopped up with this guy budget times one of my
00:09favorite uh he's always doing good in the hood man my guy horatio williams from the horatio
00:13williams foundation what up though what's going on man how you doing black blessed and fly man
00:17how are you i'm great man i'm great can i complain all right so me and you have spoke a
00:22bunch of
00:22times but for the people who have not had a chance to hear you for real um tell a tell
00:27a little about
00:28yourself and what you got going on man and the horatio williams foundation all right well the
00:33horatio williams foundation we're a leadership foundation as everybody know we um downtown
00:38detroit we are um pillar in the community just trying to save these youth's lives and give them
00:45the right direction where they need to go if they need any um anyone to talk to we we're gonna
00:52be
00:52there for them you know they will be there to support them so in a nutshell that's that's exactly
00:57what we do we're a safe haven in the community and we have sources of um a lot of resources
01:05that
01:06we can give back to the kids so they don't make a mistake that will cost them the rest of
01:10their life
01:10what made you want to start the horatio williams foundation what was it it was an event that you
01:15was like something has to change or you was just like man i i just really need to do this
01:19well
01:20actually when i was growing up i came from a center called the east side center okay and that was
01:25like our safe haven in the community we always was able to go to the east side center at the
01:31end of
01:31the day after school before school on saturdays they had cooked the famous cheese um sandwiches for us
01:40you know and just was the fellowship and the love that they gave us because they really believed in us
01:46and they let us and they let us know that by showing us that they cared about us
01:51so i wanted to mimic that that's always i wanted to do is have a safe haven for the kids
01:56i know it
01:56changed my life from the east side center we started the east side coach we had the blue devils baseball
02:02team then we had the blue devils basketball team so it just saved our life and it gave us another
02:09outlet instead of going getting in trouble we knew we can go over here and um be a part of
02:14something be a
02:15part of the team and we can ask them for any advice that we wanted i mean my football coach
02:21uh mr foster
02:22was very impactful in my life charles smith was very packed for my life you know and just to see
02:28them
02:28being around and show that they cared about us it made a big impact on me today so nice this
02:36is
02:36it's one of them things if you see something you'll want to do it got you got you so i
02:41wanted to repeat
02:42that now the horatio williams is a non-profit correct yes sir okay what are some of the biggest
02:47misconceptions people hear about a non-profit that you wish to obliterate well you know when it comes
02:53to non-profit people just think these corporations gonna give them funds you know or the state gonna
02:59give them funds it's you know it's very unique because they stick with who they work with because
03:06they know they'd improve they self got you a lot of times people are trying to sell programs
03:12instead of having something that just come from their heart that they have a passion for
03:18everybody doing everybody can do an sat program everybody can do a cna program everybody can do a
03:25robotics program at the end of the day what makes yours different than other people yeah so when people
03:32like i tell people don't give you your money come and see what i'm doing then you make the decision
03:37from there so i like that once you come and see that i may i may tell you ten thousand
03:44you come and
03:45see you may want to give me a hundred thousand you know so at the end of the day when
03:50you're not a big
03:51organization that's been around for a hundred years like a nationwide like the big brothers boys and
03:56girls all that that's something that's all over the country if you're not a big one of those
04:01companies you out here competing with so many so many different companies that's trying to get
04:06funds to keep their program not to say they don't have great programs but at the end of the day
04:11we're we're out here competing fighting for funding because all our programs are free
04:16so i'm definitely out here fund you know trying to ask for funds for all these free programs so at
04:22the end of the day people believe in what i do and i always want to like we just did
04:26the circus
04:26with mike morrison yep i saw that i had it packed in there we had 1900 people there's only whole
04:322000 that's fire at the end of the day you know is people can ask for money but can you
04:39fill these
04:40seats yeah yeah yeah so i'm gonna show you what i can do yeah i'm gonna show you what i
04:46can do so at
04:47the end of the day we just reached out and we didn't touch a lot of people lives and stuff
04:51we have
04:51different schools we work with different cheerleading programs we support a lot of athletic
04:57stuff so our goal is to support the kids and give them the right tools that they need to be
05:02successful
05:03now the racial women's foundation has been around for how many years now 20 years 20 years 20 years
05:09but i've been doing this work for around about 32 years got you got you became a 501c3
05:15um 20 years ago and that's what people get a misconception of a foundation you can go over
05:19foundation but do you have a 501c3 with your tax exempt number and all that so i try to educate
05:26people get your paperwork right so don't think when you go to see people now help you all these
05:31people don't want to help no they just want you to get your stuff right and first when i started
05:35i
05:35had my stuff right i had to bump my head and learn and learn and learn and now i'm to
05:40a point i'm
05:41confident with my staff and everything we got all our stuff together so um for somebody who wants to
05:47following your footsteps because you've been doing this for a while man and uh you definitely got
05:51to inspire a bunch of kids and want to continue the horatio foundation just create their own
05:55what would be some advice for you to them for them to start their own uh non-profit organization
06:00just have a just have a passion of what you want to do gotcha at the end of the day
06:04a lot of people
06:06have different mindsets and different thoughts but it got to make sense to a funder at the end of
06:12the day now when you say that what that mean it got to make sense to a funder how does
06:16um you have
06:17different things like you have um different organizations doing different things like um
06:23sound by sound mind they focus on football and they branched out to do they're in the schools now
06:30you see what i'm saying gotcha just like me i'm branched out i'm in schools now first i was just
06:34doing in my building then principal's like how can you bring your program from your building
06:38and bring it into my school so we were successful to do that and it's um it's it's enrichment program
06:45because we provide different services october 24th you got an event going on okay hoops and culture
06:52all right talk to us about that man well you summed it up it's hoops and some culture nice so
06:57the goal
06:58is to bring some hbcus down here and it never happened before you know so we got three hbcus coming
07:05down here wayne state to play tuskegee and that's where i played ball that down in tuskegee okay and
07:11it's gonna talk about that a little bit man i know you're a hoops fan we don't get into that
07:15in a
07:15second go ahead go ahead then you got um alabama a&m is going to play um you you'll deal
07:21mercy got you
07:22then you have um oakland gonna play tennessee state okay so three three impactful games and and the day
07:31before we're going to have um the earn your leisure guys come and talk about financial literacy
07:37and jane's wife from dwind come and talk about mental health and emotional health okay so that
07:43must be the culture part of the hoops and coaching all right now uh the guys from earn your leisure
07:48man
07:48how did that connection happen man these these are guys have been preaching financial literacy for a
07:52while um so talk to me about how you connect with those individuals well it's kind of funny my
07:57college roommate um he's from new york and he'd been working with these guys he'd been telling me
08:01about these guys when they first got started so funny story he told me i need to take them to
08:06lunch
08:06around about six years six years ago they first got started i was like man i'm oh i don't need
08:11no
08:11financial literacy so we did not go to lunch and then the next thing you know they came back
08:17we hooked up i met him then i had an opportunity to go to new york um my college roommate
08:24do a big
08:25thing at carnegie hall and earn a leisure guys was there and i'm like well how do i bring this
08:30to
08:31detroit that's the culture that we need why do i bring it so when he did it after they did
08:36their
08:37um segment he had um rick ross perform with the orchestra sound like dang that'd be cool to bring
08:44it back home and do that so that's how all of it panned it out with the earning leisure guys
08:49and now
08:50we doing this we doing the same thing um next friday night nice you also said who's gonna be
08:56there for um the mental health aspect of it um doctor i mean uh for the mental health oh james
09:03mr james white from d win he the ceo of d win that's the mental health department in the city
09:08of
09:09detroit why was it important for you to include a mental health aspect in the hoops and culture why are
09:13you big on mental health talk to me about that man i'm huge on mental health okay a lot of
09:17these
09:17kids um believe they're gonna go pro all right got you so when you don't go pro or you don't
09:22go
09:22division one then they just get lost out here you know i've seen a lot of kids that can play
09:28division
09:28two division three and they miss the opportunity because they want to play division one now you got
09:33nil money out here you can go to wayne state and ball out then go to oakland and get paid
09:39right you can go to uod and get paid or western michigan or michigan you go somewhere and get
09:43paid so at the end of the day don't think because you go to a two or three you miss
09:49your opportunity
09:50you really want to go somewhere where you can play i don't want to go to division one i'm not
09:54getting
09:54in the game put me in division two where i'm playing all the time now you can see my talent
10:00so talking to these kids and they don't understand you work hard to just get a number on the back
10:05of
10:05your shirt right and at the end end of the day when it's over you got to buy a ticket
10:11like me to
10:12go to the game and that's the reality and that's really mentally bothering these kids and you gotta
10:19look at it you get you take a look kid that goes to just say bowling green and he boiling
10:26out then
10:27three games later he playing his worst three games but the coach ain't talking to him and when the
10:35coach finally talked to him he found out what's going on he got a girl pregnant he ain't thinking
10:39about football right yeah he's thinking about the baby he's thinking about what he got himself into
10:44yeah yeah what he got to tell his mom his dad yeah yeah so mentally he ain't there there you
10:49go so at
10:50the end of the day it's bigger than the game in fact you got to build a relationship with these
10:54kids
10:54because they're gonna make some bad decisions right but at the end of the day how do you correct how
10:59you
10:59support them when you're doing that we got to have a supporting cast where if you make a mistake
11:04this is a program we have for you at what i don't even say what age but at what point
11:11in your life
11:11did you realize that mental health was more important than people were making it you know
11:16what i'm saying like um you know in my adult stage i had a cousin i think at the age
11:22of 35 and i had an
11:23uncle at the age of like 40 and it just changed overnight they start having mental issues and stuff you
11:30know trying to trying to beat the system and trying to say somebody did this to him and that to
11:36him
11:36so at the end of the day i'm like man what happened to him i was like my favorite uncle
11:40he was young so
11:41he wasn't him like 10 years older than me so i got you dang what happened so at the end
11:47of the day
11:48you get put in the system if you ain't getting the right care you started thinking totally different
11:55and it's kind of sad because these are good people man it's kind of sad and and by me working
12:00with this
12:01stuff now i'm seeing in a between with women that i work with between the age of 40 to 50
12:09i'm starting
12:09to see them starting to have them issues from 30 to 40 i'm seeing men because they trying to figure
12:15out what they need to be doing the rest of their life then it's not working out for them you
12:20know
12:21all of the what i see with most people they want they want to say they work more than what
12:26they
12:26what they what they what they getting so at the end of the day prime example yourself you working your
12:32way up to where you need to go it's a process you just can't go come in here and say
12:36you want to be
12:37at the top exactly i'm gonna be mason you know right right you've been doing it as long as you've
12:41been
12:41born but at the end of the day you under some great mentorship with them because they showing
12:46you the ropes and they're not trying to hinder you they may say hey go to the bounce all right
12:52make your way here then you'll be somewhere else you know it's just giving you a path for an
12:56opportunity a lot of times these kids and adults don't have the opportunity you think they're all
13:02right but mentally they're not all right with the hoops and culture man what is something that
13:09you want people to take away from this it's a two-day event correct yeah all right so tell me
13:12what you want people to take away from this event obviously we talked about the mental health aspect
13:16of it but i mean it's gonna be a fun day too because you're playing the basketball you're watching
13:20all these basketball games but then you get to learn a lot so well my thing what i want them
13:24to take
13:24away from is opportunity gotcha because we got a hbc expo and we got a trade expo so at the
13:30end
13:30before the games you can come register your kid for central state tuskegee tennessee state
13:37it's like a college tour then we got a cna program your kid ain't going to college you can go
13:42there
13:42we got the carpenter guys coming out pipe fitters electricians so hospitality organizations coming
13:50out everybody's not going to go to college all right just at the end of the day i know some
13:55guys
13:55that's so creative didn't go to specs howard you know they didn't take some classes but they have a
14:01talent and a lot of times we don't support them with a talent i want you to go to school
14:07everybody went to school mama that's not me my son wayne say dad this ain't me i'd rather come home
14:13and work with you man he's doing a great job so at the end of the day when you see
14:19what's the niche
14:20and make somebody else comfortable you can't make them comfortable because of what you want them to do
14:26your parents may want you to be doing something different or they supporting your dream you know
14:30what i mean sometimes parents just don't do just don't do that so at the end of the day
14:36the mental health thing is tough out here man yeah it's tough and a lot of people need to
14:41be able to reach out to their loved ones and talk to them just have a conference just have a
14:46conversation with a lot of people like to be heard they don't have nobody to talk to man nobody
14:53nobody so at the end of the day we want to be that piece come and talk to us and
14:58see if we can
14:58guide you in the right direction you got a few hbcus on there was that intentional or that just kind
15:03of happened like that man intentional okay wow how come well tuskegee recruited three kids from
15:09the state of michigan they got one from rochester one from cass and one from wayne
15:17um and tuskegee is my school division two now nice so i wanted to make sure they come and showcase
15:22they do a great job we're recruiting kids from detroit tuskegee not just basketball academically
15:29dope okay now alabama a&m dante he does a great job with the kids and um he he came
15:36and spoke to my
15:37coaches forum around about six years ago and i believe in him because it's bigger than coaching
15:43he coaching you on the game of life instead of the game of basketball that's important man there you go
15:49all right that's really important you you ain't gonna win every game you ain't gonna lose every
15:53game but if you commit it and you believe in the system we're gonna get some positive results out
15:58of it now um alabama a&m with dante is that nate just transferred from u and d over to
16:07alabama a&m oh
16:08okay so it's a connection there yeah so one of their best players just transferred over here
16:13now he's coming back home okay this is the closest they will be where his family can come from
16:18grand rapids come and see him play now tennessee state in oakland tennessee state just won a division
16:27went to the uh ncaa tournament and no the smith is a young um player i mean a young coach
16:33and he
16:33played at duke i think he played at portland and he's doing a great job down there i think they
16:38got
16:38two two or three five stars down there one guy's committed to the nba draft and came back
16:44so and it's gonna be some fire they got a 7-2 guy but mr um greg campy down in
16:52oakland he's he's
16:53one of the best he's been coaching prior as long as no smith been born you know so okay it's
16:58gonna
16:58be exciting and just trying to get different teams and let kids know other it's other options hbcus are
17:04great i went there my rolodex from hbcu is just phenomenal okay i can call all over the world all
17:13over the united states and we know somebody that knows somebody that's gonna be there to be
17:18supportive of us and that's what i want the kids most kids that go to hbcu complete four years
17:23dope complete four years now if you go to michigan state don't work one and there you go then you
17:31come back down here you got occ is nothing wrong with these schools but at the end of the day
17:35go
17:37somewhere where somebody wants you to be nice i think that's important that you stressing like
17:43go you're appreciated now you tolerate it there you go type situation you know what i'm saying i
17:47don't think people really understand that man so i like that you're doing that all right now i know
17:50you got you a busy schedule so i gotta ask you some basketball stuff man because i'm a huge
17:54basketball fan real quick i uh you talked about you playing at what is it tuskegee tuskegee what
17:59position you play bro guard okay you was a guard how long you was there for you went all four
18:02years
18:03three three i was in i was in a car accident after the after my first year oh okay i
18:08feel like i
18:08remember you telling me that before man what was it about playing at tuskegee because it's a hbcu
18:12people who kind of overlook the hbcus when it come to basketball so i don't think people really
18:17understand like the importance of going there man you kind of stress a little bit well when i went
18:21the i was recruited to go to like five different different schools my principal at the time was david dr
18:26david
18:27sneak okay he went to tuskegee he was like no you're going to tuskegee i was like where is that
18:32at
18:32you know he says in alabama so the next week they sent me my scholarship and i'm like whoa
18:38and my mom was like you better sign that thing yeah we signed a scholarship and she sent me on
18:44the greyhound down there man and it was on from there man it was just the love that i got
18:49down
18:49there was it a culture shock uh yeah yeah it's hot very hot yeah it's so hot yeah and i
18:56ain't see
18:56dirt roads you know red dirt roads you know and and just seeing how the country boy dirt road with
19:04the great lake but the key thing was just seeing all these happy people that didn't have much
19:10gotcha and they didn't need much and we came from a culture shock of here of all the flash and
19:16dash
19:17but at the end of the day you go somewhere else you see these people happy you see these people
19:21with
19:21other material things here that's not happy it's not enough it's not enough we only had a walmart
19:28there we ain't have a gucci louis vuitton we ain't have none of that you had to go to atlanta
19:34to go see
19:35that stuff wow so it changed my mindset and my and the way i think on material things too because
19:41we
19:42only had a walmart and the target that's the only thing we had down there wow all right horatio uh
19:49tell
19:49people about the event can they still get tickets it's october 24th all right so that's next saturday
19:54man um how can they get tickets where it's gonna be at tell them all that good stuff all right
19:57you
19:57can go to wayne you can go to wayne state athletics and and just pull up the game will come
20:04up there
20:04tickets only 20 you get three college games for 20 that's such a good deal you know it's not about
20:09the
20:10money but we got to pay the reps and different things like that so it's 20 that's all it is
20:16and you
20:17get three games we got four bands coming i forgot to tell you we got cody river rouge oak park
20:24and
20:24chandler park nice and we and we're gonna see we're gonna see who's gonna battle to have the best
20:28battle of the bands too yeah yeah all right we're gonna make it we ain't naming it that but we
20:33want
20:34the hbcu flavor yeah in the last game we got detroit youth quiet doing the national anthem okay nice
20:40we're bringing out everybody oh yeah the culture part of it man can people still get tickets to go see
20:44earn your leisure or that's all sold out how does that work well yeah they can tell them to go
20:48i
20:48know we freed up another um 50 tickets because we were sold out at first we had 50 more chairs
20:54so
20:54they more than welcome to go online and just register for that just go to horatio williams
