00:00Pistons, big game. Their home opener is today.
00:03And I've been following this page, and I'm not going to lie to you,
00:06I've been learning a lot more about sports, ladies.
00:08We've got three women who are behind girls in sports.
00:12We've got Katie, Jessica, and Jackie.
00:14Hi!
00:15Good morning.
00:16Good morning, ladies.
00:17First of all, I've got to ask off-rip, what's your favorite sport?
00:20Football.
00:21Okay.
00:22Football.
00:22Basketball.
00:23Okay, so we've got two footballs, one basketball.
00:26Lovely, lovely.
00:27Okay, so tell me what Girl in Sports is for people who have not heard of the organization yet.
00:34So, Girl in Sports is an organization that we started.
00:38We host events across the city of Detroit.
00:41So we do a two-fold event.
00:43We do our signature girls night out for women who want to go to the games,
00:47go to events, but they don't have a homegirl, they don't have a friend,
00:49or they don't want to bring their boyfriend or man.
00:52They don't want to go with a man.
00:53Okay, we don't want no man there.
00:56And then we also do other events.
00:59We call them the low-key events.
01:00So whether it's a watch party, we're supporting other women's sports,
01:03we're going to other things together.
01:04It's always sports-centered, and it was created because we got tired
01:09of not having spaces and places for us to enjoy sports
01:13and also celebrating women in sports.
01:16Exactly, because as someone who grew up loving football,
01:19like football is my main thing, I was raised on it.
01:22I had my uncle play it, my cousin's in it right now.
01:25So I know the game, and I know the plays, I know the fouls,
01:29I know what's going on.
01:31When the referees don't know, I know.
01:33And I'm cussing at the TV.
01:35And I'm mad.
01:36And aren't you sorry to me always telling you
01:38you don't know what you're talking about.
01:39Or where you learned that from.
01:40I got that.
01:41I went to Monday Night Football at a bar in Detroit,
01:44and so I'm talking to my friend.
01:45I'm like, oh, yeah, that's probably past interference.
01:47So the guy's like, how do you know that?
01:48Where you learned that from?
01:49Why do it matter?
01:50God forbid I have the internet.
01:52I have the internet.
01:53I had a daddy.
01:54Right.
01:55I got somebody.
01:56I know what I'm talking about.
01:57I know what I'm talking about.
01:58But that's the thing.
01:59Why we can't be right?
02:00They hate when we right.
02:01They hate when we right.
02:02And that's a whole separate conversation
02:04that we will get into.
02:05No.
02:06But specifically with girls in sports,
02:08the fact that you guys are essentially erasing the barrier,
02:11at least for the city of Detroit,
02:13that's truly amazing.
02:14What was the first, like, event where you were like,
02:18ooh, this is what girls in sports was made for.
02:21Like, this is the reason why we created this.
02:24I think the first event,
02:25we actually had a partnership with Hollywood Detroit,
02:28and it just ended up working out with us being able to watch
02:31Clarissa Shields.
02:32And I know, you know, she may have some words about her,
02:35but she came in and knocked that girl out.
02:37And did.
02:38And she laid her flat.
02:39So the fact that our first one,
02:41we had 25 women with us,
02:43and we were able to enjoy it in a suite with Hollywood
02:45and Hollywood Detroit.
02:47So having that opportunity to create such an event
02:49where women were excited,
02:52people were like, we came out the gate running,
02:53and then we had the kind of backfield to say
02:56what sports are women interested in.
02:58Right.
02:59And honestly, all of them.
03:00There is not a community where we can't tap into
03:02or where we're not interested in.
03:04And it's all different women that come different times.
03:07So if you're interested in football,
03:08you may not come to the basketball event,
03:11but it's a homegirl right behind you
03:12that's ready to take your place and swap out.
03:15And then we have girls that come to everything.
03:16I want to be a part of everything
03:18because whether they love it, don't know it,
03:20they want to be around.
03:21I know that's right.
03:22And tonight is another event happening
03:24because I don't know how y'all do it
03:27because tickets for the opening game ain't no joke.
03:30Listen.
03:31Gotta have a club.
03:32In this economy.
03:33Gotta have a club.
03:33Amen.
03:34But tell us about what's happening tonight
03:36with Girls in Sports and Pistons.
03:38So for us tonight, what we're doing is
03:41we have a wonderful relationship.
03:44We're building relationships with all the sports teams.
03:46So they offer us an opportunity to collect tickets
03:49and have women designated in these areas.
03:52So you know whether you're going along,
03:54you're bringing a friend, you're bringing one friend,
03:56you will have someone sitting next to you
03:58that's interested in sports with you.
04:00And then we're also taking pictures at halftime.
04:03We have free gifts for the girls.
04:04So it's actually really exciting
04:06to be a part of the Pistons Home Opener
04:08in our small capacity
04:09because there are a lot of women
04:11who want to go to these games,
04:12who want to build community with other people,
04:14but they don't have anybody to go with.
04:15Or like I said, they're stuck going with people
04:17who maybe they're not.
04:19I don't want my boyfriend on my back.
04:20I want to be able to have a girls' night out.
04:23And then for all three of you,
04:25why do you feel like someone
04:26who's listening to our voices right now
04:28should be a part of girls in sports,
04:31whether they're a rookie or they're a vet?
04:35I think that's the perfect reason, right?
04:37Like it gives you a space for those of us
04:40who know basketball, football, baseball, hockey,
04:42all the things.
04:43I studied sports broadcasting in school,
04:45so I had to know.
04:47Oh, she's educated, ladies and gentlemen.
04:48I mean, I had to know all the sports
04:51in order to be able to report on them,
04:53but that just helped my love grow more
04:55because it expanded outside
04:57of just football and basketball.
04:59But I think it gives you a space to learn,
05:02not even the people that do know a lot.
05:04It gives us a chance to teach.
05:06It gives us a chance to connect with other women
05:09and just bring community.
05:11And I think that's something that's lacking right now
05:13is community specifically.
05:15So I love that KD even had this idea
05:18and tapped me and Jess to come in
05:21and kind of help her with the vision.
05:24Oh, thank you.
05:25They know so much about sports.
05:27And it's just like our friendship started
05:29with us being into girly things.
05:31And then we found out that we all like sports too.
05:34So what a way to grow our own friendship.
05:36We've been friends for a very long, very long time.
05:40So to have women who I love be a part of this as well
05:43has been like, that's why y'all see girls in sports growing
05:46because we were able to build a team
05:49and it's a team of people who I love
05:51and then they love other women
05:53and want to see women grow.
05:54And, you know, us have spaces for each other.
05:57So I'm excited that, you know, my girls is here.
06:00They took my answers, but I definitely just love women.
06:03I love sports and why not put the two together.
06:06Like, it's definitely a way to build community,
06:10build friendships, just have a good time.
06:12Like, go get dressed up, go get cute,
06:14go grab a drink before the game,
06:16come to the game and grab more drinks.
06:17Amen.
06:19That's what we'll be doing.
06:21And repeat the cycle.
06:22And I think the biggest thing that all three of you hit on,
06:25besides just the fact that it's obviously surrounding
06:27your love of sports,
06:28it is also the perfect way for adults to find new friends.
06:32I think as an adult,
06:33we can all say that making new relationships
06:36is one of the hardest things to do.
06:38And why not come to an event with girls in sports
06:42where there's already a common thread?
06:43You're a woman who is interested or loves sports.
06:47Or wants to learn about sports
06:48because you want to hang out, right?
06:50You're like, I don't want to feel like out of place.
06:53With girls in sports, even if you don't know anything,
06:55we're going to welcome you in.
06:56You can come have fun and kiki with us
06:58and just joke about not knowing anything.
07:01Like, and by the time you leave,
07:03you'll know something.
07:04And it's a much better atmosphere to be like,
07:06I don't know something when it comes to sports with women
07:10than, you know.
07:11Yeah, men are just mean.
07:12Because I mean, at least we can joke.
07:14Like, one of our favorite things is,
07:15nah, we've been mixing the housewives with football.
07:18So it's so funny to look at a NeNe meme
07:20or a Portia meme,
07:21and you're like, I know what that means.
07:23And if I'm connected to football or sports,
07:25it feels more fun.
07:27So that's what we really are trying to do
07:28is educate and have sports feel really fun.
07:32I love this, man.
07:33You know, I'm always going to support anything
07:36that y'all do,
07:37because I've been a huge supporter
07:38of not only UKD,
07:40but just girls in sports too.
07:41So shout out the socials.
07:43Let them know what websites they need to be at
07:46so that they can always be getting their tickets for stuff,
07:48because we need to blow up this organization.
07:51Okay, thank you.
07:52We are girls, no I in girls,
07:55G-R-L-S dot sports.
07:57We're on Instagram, we're on TikTok,
07:58and our website is girls-sports.club.
08:02I appreciate you lovely ladies for being here.
08:05Thanks for having us.
08:07And that's it for the morning rollout.
08:08I'm going to be back real soon.
08:10So keep it locked right here on 105.1 The Bounce.
08:12Thanks.
