00:00get concessions on both sides but uh we will we we are connected here with andy katz who covers the
00:07ncaa uh a great deal for us andy we'll we'll get to the wichita part we're just discussing
00:12kind of yesterday and trying to get this college sports legislation hammered through here you you
00:19do this for a living you cover all this stuff and thank you for being here are we is this
00:23bill
00:23going to pass in some form is this the solution we've been waiting for i would be surprised um
00:31mainly because you know the deadline of august uh is sort of what senator cruz had put forth
00:38um and with so much going on it's i just would be shocked if it's a high priority
00:46um now maybe i'll be wrong maybe they'll push this through um but i will be surprised
00:52uh one thing i have continued to say that i do believe i believe there's going to be a market
00:59correction okay so that um you can't still go to the same donor class forever and in a lot of
01:10these
01:10schools um it's the same five or six people and so or five or you know small group of companies
01:19companies so i really do believe that there will be a market correction um and you know
01:26schools that have won they can maybe go back to them but if you have a couple bad years in
01:31a row
01:32and i'll use some examples that i know of washington washington had you know i don't know specifically
01:38who the money guy was but they had someone with deep pockets they had two you know uh big time
01:45rosters financially they didn't make the tournament either year and this year and then basketball
01:51they're struggling because he's like i'm not doing it anymore uh not to that level um you know i live
01:59in rhode island now and i know providence went through a whole thing where they you know had a
02:0710 million dollar roster last year they didn't win the the donors specifically said we want kim
02:15english out okay well you gotta pay for it they did then they went back to them for more money
02:21for this
02:21roster and to get brian hodgson from south florida so now if it works great i think they can go
02:29back but
02:30if they don't win this year it's gonna be hard to go back to the same people because it's a
02:35small group
02:35of people and so i that's why i think there will be a market correction you know um there obviously
02:44has to be some forms of guardrails i i just you know call me a skeptic i just i just
02:51don't see
02:52congress saving the day yeah waivers and boosters is the name of the game andy uh let's move to a
02:57bunch of new nuggets from the ncaa including the big one here in wichita uh the play-in games are
03:03coming to interest bank arena uh have you been to wichita for march madness andy have you been able
03:07to make that trip for any of the games that we've had here and why would the ncaa pick wichita
03:12so i have been to wichita for wichita state games at the roundhouse i have not been to ncaa tournament
03:18games there uh they've been a great success um you know look i i've talked to a number of your
03:25colleagues over the last week and what i think the you know initially i had my own personal bias i
03:31used
03:31to work in albuquerque years ago uh i think the pit's a great venue but upon hearing it all it
03:38makes total sense for a number of reasons first off i do know they wanted in the central time zone
03:43because the majority of teams are east of the mississippi um and that's just a fact two um when
03:52you have in a place like wichita you also can use the 400 mile radius that they use for bus
03:59um so you
04:01can get people there fans obviously teams most importantly uh quickly um and you know not it's
04:11you know they're going through a bit of a um a crunch right now with charted flights so um you
04:18know
04:18not having to charter everybody we'll see but that i think wasn't uh you know was uh important also
04:27they did a deep dive on where do teams go from dayton or where would they have gone if we
04:33had
04:34wichita last year and it all sort of made more sense to be in wichita than somewhere else um in
04:42terms of logistics and geography and then i think one of the most important things is the fan support
04:48the community support um i've seen it because i've covered wichita at neutral site events the fans show
04:55up you can't take this event to a community that doesn't consistently support its local team
05:02because then you can't ask fans to say wait a minute you don't really support the local team but
05:08hey we're bringing in eight you know uh uh 12 random teams to you come out and see them um
05:16you know or some regional like that's not going to work you need basketball fans you need fans that
05:21are engaged and dayton has it wichita has it um and and also it's a short turnaround it's selection
05:28sunday you've got monday to prep and be there and then it's tuesday wednesday boom boom so uh for all
05:36those reasons i think it's a home run um for wichita to join the opening round andy katz joining
05:44us at the andy katz on x um to talk about a lot of things in in college sports most
05:50notably this
05:50wichita edition so we we ponder this question we think about this all the time is the first thing
05:55that popped into our brain andy i i look we love that it's coming here the next two years because
06:01we
06:01weren't a host site for the ncaa tournament but those opening right the round of 64s here have
06:06been a tremendous success for the community so now we get into this as organizers have said they'd like
06:12to be the next dayton you've observed this closer probably on the dayton side than we have
06:18it do you think being you know in that position every year is better than every handful of years
06:27getting the magnitude of the actual ncaa tournament we wonder that all the time which is better you
06:32know every four years of the ncaa tournament's opening rounds or every year of this newly expanded
06:38or basically what dayton's had with the play-in games um i think every year for a number of reasons
06:45one um i think you're guaranteed to get quality games and so what kind of teams will be there well
06:52first of all we've had really good games in that first four in dayton like some of the best of
06:57the
06:57tournament um but you know you could get tcu versus clemson um you know maybe it's butler versus
07:05san dieu state who knows it's going to be you know mid could be k state could be missouri could
07:14be st
07:14lewis could be unkc as a 15 um and by the way uh you know i had someone ask me
07:25well oh well now we
07:26won't get kansas well you know what every school goes through a dip north carolina was in the first
07:33four so ucla was in the first four so i wouldn't rule it out that kansas will never be in
07:39the first
07:39four or now the opening round um you don't know k-state if you told casey alexander right now
07:48book your ticket to wichita opening round you're in the tournament he would take it in a second
07:53of course he would want more want to be a higher seed but if you said no you guarantee you're
07:59in
08:00wichita where do i sign up so there's k-state you know pulsa i mean i could go down the
08:06list i think
08:07there could be so many different schools that will provide a great atmosphere so what we talked
08:12about as well andy is that when the news comes out because you know people hate everything all the
08:17time uh it should be 64 it should never be expanded beyond 64 68 was even too much and now
08:23we're going
08:23to this uh what's the what's the combat to that what do you tell people that that don't want this
08:28to happen uh our thing is that you know the tournament on thursday is still gonna be the
08:33tournament thursday right yeah no to me the the things that like years ago i don't know if you
08:39remember this they they proposed 96 and that i thought was way too much ridiculous um i hope this
08:46is the end we shall see but um i'm embracing it uh change is hard for a lot of people
08:53and i look
08:54to me one of the prime things to look at is the world cup the world cup expanded people complained
09:04about it uh and i as someone who's not a regular soccer fan football uh you know i think it's
09:13been
09:13awesome to have new fan bases these countries that normally are not in the world cup whether it's
09:19you know panama cape verde haiti uh you know these other nations that weren't used to being in the
09:26world cup now we're in it and they were part of this incredible you know kaleidoscope of a culture
09:34that that came to the u.s in june and early july and it was great and i think that
09:40um to engage more
09:42fans and more teams um i just think we'll can you know get the interest up but to your point
09:49tj
09:50i was i thought what they had to do was not disrupt the rhythm of the tournament which meant
09:58you know and there's a lot of television television contracts are pretty pretty much prohibited but have
10:04selection sunday be when it's supposed to be tournaments and when they're supposed to be and
10:07tuesday wednesday and then we go thursday friday we're off and running um and for the women they're
10:14doing the same thing they're on campus but they're going to start 64 on friday same deal and then
10:19you know i've seen mock-ups it's staying on one piece of paper you know which may sound simplistic
10:26but to the casual fan you know and we're not all in offices anymore but still uh you know you
10:34can take
10:36it you can print it out and it's easy no one wants like multiple pieces of paper like that doesn't
10:42work so i think as long as they stay true to that which they have i think we're gonna be
10:48fine i i i'm
10:50with you on that here's something i don't know if you saw this andy it stood out to us so
10:54in the
10:54release about this event coming to wichita it felt a little buried but this kind of feels like a big
11:01deal i'll give it to you quote and this is from the ncaa the men's basketball committee also voted
11:05to remove the provision that prohibited a school from playing at a site at which it is serving as
11:12the tournament host now that peaked our interest initially because it's like oh what if wichita
11:17states and at large could they potentially play in wichita but then i also think about it and like
11:21well wait a minute does that mean gonzaga could play in spokane if it's a what well they have
11:28uh as a lot of well but let me let me give you the nuances of this the times that
11:35gonzaga has
11:36played in spokane washington state has been the host okay yeah that's right houston just did that
11:44didn't rice host whenever it was yes yes uh in fact rice took over for houston great point tj as
11:52the
11:52host an example that happened this past year um oklahoma state was the host in oklahoma city
12:00had oklahoma state made the tournament they couldn't have played in oklahoma city that's kind
12:08of ridiculous like you know just because you've got some staffers working an event that prohibits your
12:16team from being there now what i don't think will happen with wichita um playing at wichita state
12:25is now they have an out with dayton so to avoid a huge home court advantage it would be huge
12:33they
12:34would send wichita to dayton just like now if dayton was in that position they would send dayton
12:40to wichita um you know in the past they didn't have that option with dayton so um you know now
12:48i do
12:48think um they've got that work but i think it's it was more for the purposes of allowing schools
12:58that are the host and and still being able to play in those arenas yeah andy let's go with a
13:05national
13:06talking point that's going on around college basketball the five-year model is happening
13:09uh and it's going as everybody expected it to go and everybody's saying well why can't i get an
13:15extra year if they can get an extra year why can't i get an extra year and we are in
13:18the thick of it
13:18right now are they going to get extra years the rosters are full how does that even work yeah you
13:25know look i guess i take this from a perspective of a parent and maybe i'm fortunate that my kids
13:34were
13:35ready to move on and well i've won still in college but i mean you know i guess my thing
13:41is
13:41like you have to start something at some point so you have to start this you know and and you
13:48can't
13:48grandfather in everybody um you know it would just take then everything's bloated now we're also in an
13:55era and we'll see with what happens with these obviously there are lawsuits we knew this was going
14:00to happen but i don't think first of all everyone wants another year obviously some people move on
14:04with their lives they're trying to play professionally what have you um but we're also in a time where
14:10i do think scholarships will be available because they moved them up to 15 so not everyone's filling
14:15the 15 but you know the money's not there for a lot of these players so you know like for
14:25example
14:25i'll give you one like you know donovan dent okay who played in new mexico and ucla he said he
14:31was
14:31done with basketball wasn't gonna play pro i've seen his name floated out there as wait a minute
14:36he has his fifth year but i'm thinking to myself here's a player who's an all-league player mount
14:40west conference player of the year a couple years ago how many schools have the money to pay him if
14:47he wants to come back and he gets that which again is a big yeah he has to come back
14:53and say
14:53i guess i'll take whatever you can get me you know milan uh uh mom chilevich who uh withdrew from
15:02the nba draft so he played at iowa state there weren't a lot of schools that had money for him
15:08now there were a couple kentucky louisville arizona and kentucky came up with it but not everyone had
15:12money for him in late june that's the difference andy cats we appreciate it uh we made it this whole
15:18time we didn't even talk ku or k-state or the big 12 that should tell you what you know
15:23yeah you did
15:24get a k-state mention in there with casey alexander and ku we'll do this again we'll actually talk some
15:29hoops andy there's a lot going on thank you guys appreciate your time
