Jacob & Tejay cover the notions of IF the Royals can make a playoff run as well as who is the greatest Royal of all time.
Transcript
00:00tj let's talk a little royals here um it's another look they they split the series with
00:05detroit they're gonna have to be better than that if they want to catch anybody like splits aren't
00:10going to cut the mustard but they're still playing well and they're still not to full strength
00:17and you know they sit still what 17 games under 500 uh like it will take several things it will
00:28take one of those crazy runs which again we just saw the red socks do it right we saw the
00:36royals do it
00:37last year they'll have to rattle off i don't know some some either massive win streak or where you
00:44win you know 15 out of 18 or something like that and they'll have to also play really well down
00:50the
00:51stretch like they can't do that and then just revert back to a bad week so there's almost no wiggle
00:56room
00:56at 17 games under 500 with 55 left to play but it is nice to see them playing well and
01:03even if they
01:04don't even climb back remotely close man if they can get it i don't know what if they can get
01:08it to like
01:09four and a half games or something in september to just kind of make us go you know we gotta
01:14pay attention that's all we can hope for at this point but i don't think it impacts anything they're
01:18going to do at the trade deadline been reading a lot of the you know prognosticators and people
01:23that are having the conversations and doing all those things with the royals um and we'll get to
01:28salvador perez in just a minute but we'll start with the team first as bobby witt jr and michael
01:33garcia and chris bubich and cole reagans and carlos estevez and steven kolik are all on the il right now
01:41i don't know that anything that's happening or will happen will change their philosophy but i will
01:46say after reading more and more and more i don't know how inclined they are to trade any of the
01:55controllable assets like they're gonna have to trade the expiring contracts that won't make any
02:00sense not to but as far as guys like waka or daniel lynch or any of the pieces they can
02:06use next year
02:07it sure sounds like they're not inclined like they're gonna have to be blown away is the impression
02:14i get from everybody i mean i think that it's gonna be even more interesting now as you sit here
02:20and have conversations about like well they look they look better they look better hold on hold on
02:25what do we need to do for uh it's you know it's not helping that trade to trade exactly so
02:31uh and
02:32even if that's not a and i don't think again i don't think it's a this year thing i don't
02:37think
02:37they're in a spot where they're gonna i don't think they're gonna pull off a miracle here
02:42so but i think as you watch them play you at least could sit here and say you know maybe
02:48these guys aren't that bad maybe next year they will be okay maybe we should try this again and
02:52again it's the thing that we talk about you know the definition of insanity is keep rolling out the
02:56same thing but again if you're in a spot where you think that you're good enough if they go if
03:01even
03:02if they go where do you stand if they go above 500 in the second half of the season is
03:08that enough
03:09to make you not think that they're bad well it doesn't matter if we think it doesn't matter uh
03:16if if we think they're bad because they are like they're 17 games under 500 i i do think it
03:27matters
03:28if they are bad though and that that because like it doesn't matter what we think it's like are they
03:35bad like we've run this back now two years in a row and for two years it hasn't been this
03:43year
03:43close to good enough that's where i have to because i have been guilty of really thinking this team
03:51highly of this team the last couple years especially two years ago this year i was less inclined because
03:58the pitching all got older and it's like i don't know that i can buy into the pitching staff being
04:03as
04:03good this year next year i'm certainly not going to be able to do that that's that's the problem i'm
04:08having i don't mind i do think there's optimism in the lineup and all these things but like if
04:14they're running back a rotation next year led by a one year older waka and lugo then we still don't
04:23know what's going on with cole reagan's and it's not going to be good enough to win a world series
04:30you know like i don't think who's the ace of that i mean waka's been nails but waka's not your
04:38game
04:38one playoff starting ace that you envision i don't think that's that's reagan's right and so
04:45i don't know it's i want them to bring it back because i do think this has a chance to
04:50be a pretty
04:50good team but i don't think they have enough pitching and they certainly can't go buy it and
04:55if it's not on the farm now everyone keeps saying they need to make a trade and get these bats
05:00in the
05:00lineup in the outfield and everything else and i'm like no they need to go find pitching
05:05they haven't did much of it like they need to go find pitching reagan's was an import right
05:11remember reagan's was a trade for a role as chapman michael waka seth lugo free agent free agent
05:18kolik trade like other than boobich right now i mean i did they i think they drafted marsh who i
05:26suppose would be back we'll see what luinda avila is where did how did they get avila did they drafted
05:31him so i believe the point i'm trying to make is they haven't developed a great cast of arms right
05:41now
05:41their leading guys are all brought in from other places so i don't have a supreme amount of confidence
05:49that all of a sudden this farm system that has produced like one or two truly great arms over the
05:55years is going to produce an arm or two that's going to make all the difference in the world
06:00to me they've got to go trade for that because they don't have it they never have i i think
06:06that
06:06we have seen that the best way for the royals i think the best way to build uh even if
06:12it's more
06:13of a long-term conversation is that they've tried to do it for so long is just draft pitchers and
06:20draft pitchers and draft pitchers and we'll try to develop them and we'll get them up here and i
06:24think that there's been a little bit of a shift of you know what maybe we should draft hitters and
06:29and
06:29sign pitchers or trade for pitchers and figure that part out because at the end of the day
06:34is there's probably something too that you know there's a reason that there's 20 pitchers on a
06:38roster it's harder to develop them it's harder to develop pitchers and you know if you get a blue
06:43a blue chip you know caliber hitter and can get them up and get them in the big leagues all
06:49a jack
06:49caglione or bobby witt jr i think that that may be a better recipe for them and again they're not
06:54it's
06:55not like zion rose is going to be in the starting lineup next year uh but i you know in
06:59the long term
07:00two years three years potentially he could be up here and playing with them so uh i i kind of
07:05agree
07:05i don't think there's anybody that's the thing too that we're that you know is the bigger conversation
07:10about this maybe is that there's not help on the way there's no i mean they're top prospects there's
07:16not a single person in double a in the top 10 i don't think so they're young there's not this
07:22isn't
07:22something that well we just need to get by and we've got we've got chase burns sitting in triple a
07:26we're going to call him up or we've got whatever hunter green i don't know why i'm naming reds
07:31pitchers but you know those are guys that you have in your system that you know that could be coming
07:35up and that's not on the way well and look that's where we get into this are they going to
07:45go into
07:45this off season and be able to go trade for some pitcher or are they going to be able to
07:54sign in free
07:54agency some pitcher that's that's got a chance to be really really good i don't know they've struck
08:03very well at the trade deadline which is that's that's what i keep coming back to you know colic
08:09reagan's like they they've brought in some guys via trade we're like whoa that was another team
08:15was undervaluing that player clearly if you know if you could tell me if crystal ball chris
08:21boobich coming back after his injury on like a one-year deal okay like i'd be more inclined at
08:28that point to maybe try to do this again because now you know waka and and lugo and boobich and
08:36uh
08:36colic and reagan's is a starting five if reagan's comes back where i'm like yeah okay i'm pretty excited
08:42about that what is reagan's prognosis by the way when is reagan's back what is his what is his status
08:48i think it's like not until like june or something next year yeah he's out for all of this year
08:54and
08:54beginning of next year i believe yeah so you can't count on anything from him nothing you like
09:00even factor him into next year and for all intents and purposes it's a really interesting spot for a
09:08team to be as bad as they are but have as much talent as they have like if you go
09:13and look across
09:13baseball at the other bad teams like the really bad teams they're not running out names like the
09:21royals can run out there right now they're not they don't have six solidified spots in their lineup
09:28where you're like yeah we wouldn't take anybody we wouldn't take any of these guys out so that is a
09:33unique thing so what can they accomplish then at the deadline if they're not willing to trade waka
09:39they're probably not going to get top level starting pitching now you never know again look
09:45at steven kolik kind of a throw-in player for the padres and a freddie for mean deal so maybe
09:51lane
09:51thomas or starling marty can get you a player like that maybe john schreiber can find you a
10:00high a starting pitcher that helps you in four years i don't know but i think lane thomas and
10:06starling marty are probably the best shot right now to find somebody like that
10:09that they can always use bullpen arms controllable bullpen arms you can never have enough of those
10:15in my opinion and i do think they can get to a point where they get ursig back on track
10:20i don't
10:21know what to expect for carlos estevez um but you know if they're if they can get a piece or
10:26two to
10:27put with ursig and and daniel lynch if they hang on to lynch okay do they trade daniel lynch
10:33another question you could ask i mean strike while the iron's hot it's not getting any hotter
10:39for daniel lynch you don't you wouldn't trade lucas ursig's control right now because he's
10:44not it's like vinny pasquantino you're not trading them at their lowest value but daniel lynch is
10:49controllable and at his highest value what would he bring back in a trade i cannot imagine there are
10:56two better relievers that are going on the market this off this this trade deadline season than daniel
11:02lynch so there it'll be an interesting trade deadline the royals will make moves if they don't
11:08trade schreiber marty and lane thomas that will be a mistake like they will have missed an opportunity
11:16there because none of those guys are coming back i wouldn't think you have to trade them i don't think
11:22they're trading waka i i don't think it's going to happen and that's me changing you know i've said
11:27they should for a while i don't think they're going to i mean we're not hearing anything any chatter
11:34on them having any interest in trading him at this point they made a mistake with that last year with
11:40lugo right they didn't trade him they decided instead to resign him we all loved the decision when
11:46they made it because they were buying in and they were doubling down and yes here we go and it
11:50was
11:50100 the wrong decision i just hope they're not doing the same thing with waka yep again i it's
11:57scary because they might just put themselves in that same position again not i mean they were actually
12:02a legit could have made the playoffs i feel like at this point last year it wasn't oh yeah water
12:08they're not they're not in that those shoes but again are they going to do just enough to make them
12:13believe we might have something maybe maybe he would be worth keeping around for next year and doing it
12:18i don't think anything that's happening now was impacting their thoughts that i think their their
12:23mind has been made up on that because i mean they're not like you're not if listen if you're in
12:29that position and you're sitting here 17 games under 500 be like but hang on guys we still have a
12:33chance
12:33here like you don't need to have that job there's no way that they're thinking that way i mean they're
12:38hoping they could have fun with this and maybe make a run but it's for the future and i just
12:45it's so funny too because right every question we've had it's like can the offense catch up to
12:51how great this pitching staff is going to be that's been the last two years next year it's going to
12:56be
12:56the opposite can the pitching staff keep up with how great this offense should be and that's always
13:03harder to do you're not you don't just find these guys like you don't just find starting pitching
13:08laying around anywhere like you can find lane thomas and starling marty every off season like clockwork
13:16there are undervalued bats out there pitchers that doesn't happen there are no undervalued pitchers
13:21like you they cost a lot of money and you're betting big and i don't know i'm not saying they
13:27should
13:27trade michael walker either i'm just saying i don't think they will uh and i think i think i hope
13:36that somebody blows them away with an offer that includes young starting pitching i think that's what
13:41i hope because i'm worried the same thing's going to happen with lugo as walker gets a year older and
13:47it's just like now they're too old the window for those two guys was last year and this year now
13:53they're getting older like okay they're they're good pitchers but it's not going to be enough
13:58all right let's talk salve salve's the man um i i am so we do do yourself a favor tj
14:09as a royals fan
14:11guy that grew up a royals fan and i want you to go look up a list of teams and
14:18the amount of players
14:19they've had that are like hall of fame caliber players you don't even have to look up the hall
14:24of fame caliber part just go look up how rare it is for a team to keep a player for
14:28their entire career
14:29if they have whatever the you know like 10 plus years it's wild how little it happens for everybody
14:36not named like the yankees the cardinals and the giants it doesn't happen very often no then it
14:43shrinks significantly when you talk about hall of fame caliber players for their entire careers
14:49and then if you look at like what about small market teams it's almost non-existent the royals
14:55have had two of these guys with george brett and salvador perez i hope that salvador perez when all
15:02the dust settles when it eventually does that it's properly appreciated how lucky royals fans have been
15:11to have him for his entire career we're having this conversation bobby witt jr is the other guy that
15:16you know projects out to be a hall of famer and i would say the chances are less than 50
15:22percent
15:22that they can keep him his whole career yeah yeah uh you're right it's pretty especially for a team
15:30like kansas city to be able to keep a player yes it's pretty wild uh so i i agree and
15:35i i think that
15:37he's been uh you know properly appreciated i think the fact that he is a catcher uh i think that
15:43there
15:43were spells of salvi's career where people were like this guy can't hit water if he fell out of a
15:48boat but i think the fact that he was a catcher it was like yeah but he's really really good
15:52at
15:52defense still so right i think he's really good at he's never been appreciated defensive he has his
15:58gold gloves but the metrics have always um punished him a little bit yeah later in his career i think
16:06that he has turned more into everybody's like this guy is a hitting catcher this guy's great he's always
16:10been but i think that you know he's he's viewed now as a really good hitting catcher because he's
16:14a really good hitting catcher by catcher's metrics so uh yeah it's a lot of fun i'm glad uh first
16:21of
16:21all i'm glad he got to tie it at home uh which kind of stinks that he broke it on
16:25the road but the fact
16:26that he got to tie it at home and kind of get the curtain call and all those things then
16:29uh so it's a
16:31really cool story uh i mean he's see the second greatest royal ever yeah oh not even close i was
16:38saying i don't even know who number three would be i think that's a better conversation unless you
16:41want to put bobby with junior two now um but legacy legacy speaking sabato pres is second
16:47greatest royal ever absolutely and he and by the time the dust settles he's not going to pass george
16:51brett but you could i mean he can see it's it's like if this was a race he can see
16:58george brett in
16:59front of him which is what i think i think as far as like lovability or impact like he's a
17:06world series
17:07mvp it's what's so sad about their failures the last two years is he didn't have a chance to like
17:13go back with it maybe he still will because you know he'll still probably hit 20 or 25 home runs
17:18this year but like you could have a one and one a situation here i don't think that's crazy now
17:24i
17:24didn't grow up with george brett being the best player on my favorite team either he may be
17:30untouchable but if if he's untouchable i'm not sure anybody's catching catching that love if salvi
17:39doesn't the wildest part about the wildest part about salvador pres's career is there's an argument
17:46that salvador perez has never even been the best player on the royals teams that he was on
17:51well not not in the bad years for the royals here uh not even that like i'm saying like think
17:56about
17:57the world series years it's probably eric cosner right yeah lorenzo cain but that was still young
18:02salvi it was and then i guess yeah i guess during the lean years maybe but then there was you
18:06know
18:07moose had his crazy year he was probably the best player on the team that year so maybe salvi got
18:11one
18:11or two and then now it's bobby witt the last four years uh you know if you could tell me
18:17bobby witt
18:17jr would spend his whole career with the royals i'd tell you he'll pass george brett oh yeah i'm sure
18:21but i don't think he's going to spend his entire career with the royals yeah unfortunately i hope i
18:26i hope very few things i'm wrong about more than that because i really want that to happen but i
18:31don't know how the economics of that work out but congrats to salvi the all-time home run leader for
18:36the kansas city royals bobby witt may be able to catch that before he's done
