Transcript
00:03and now digging deeper with the teams you follow it's another sports daily insider interview on
00:11kfh and we welcome you back in here welcoming in ryan gilbert again to the show in for fitz today
00:17go powercat.com ryan welcome how are you you ready for this thing let's let's go yeah good morning
00:23gentlemen i hope i'm a half as good as fitz could ever be on this show guys uh you'll do
00:29great
00:30we know it uh the top of everybody's mind it is it is jersey patch season and k-state gets
00:37their
00:38second patch now uh purple wave auction do we have any idea a kind of cheddar that they bring in
00:45with
00:45this second patch we know the other one the big 12 that everyone are the monster i should say should
00:50be about a million um we've heard ku's second patch would surpass that do you have any idea what kind
00:57of revenue this might bring in i do not really i haven't heard much on the financials of it but
01:04you look at purple wave it fits in maybe a little bit better on a jersey than a monster logo
01:10might in
01:10the big 12 but that's just my personal take guys uh with the the stuff that's going on uh you
01:16know
01:16k-state likes to do things the traditional way uh it took how many years to sell beer in the
01:21entire
01:22stadium basically uh k-state fans uh will probably have pushback to seeing a progressive ad on the
01:27field and a patch on the jerseys and i imagine k-state it probably took a little bit of biting
01:33their tongue and to finally get through with it but it's just how important it is in today's era i
01:37assume
01:38yeah there's still some some fans that are upset i guess with the re-entry policy that didn't change
01:44it was only alcohol and so maybe in the next couple years maybe even next year you'll get a full
01:49change on the re-entry as well uh but you know it's great that you know maybe some fans won't
01:55be
01:55leaving uh their seats to go out to the parking lot and drink but if you still can you know
02:00i'm not a
02:00fan i can't speak but yeah i guess this is a step in the right direction for for some i'm
02:06sure there's
02:06other that have pushback but but yeah a lot a lot of changes here a lot of a lot of
02:10stuff in this new
02:11world guys on the field uh you guys reporting a lot avery johnson spoke the other day as we
02:16look at this ryan and try to get ready for year one under colin klein the you know the the
02:22general
02:22feel has been a bill snyder type approach to this time of year i it's hard to to really dig
02:32in on k-state
02:32and not just laser focus on avery johnson and his development how much better do you think he can be
02:40this year with colin klein at the helm well obviously you don't need me you know anybody
02:46listening to this avery johnson's potential right what he can do what he's capable of um you know a
02:52four-star guy at a high school you shouldn't need any endorsement from me but obviously in a purple
02:58jersey over the last handful of years you know he's had his flashes he's had his low points and really
03:03to find that consistency of being that difference maker on a game in and game out basis you know he's
03:09got
03:09that in him you know and obviously for one reason or another last year was a disappointment 2024 had
03:16its ups and downs but you there's a lot more that johnson can show and you know matt wells offensive
03:24coordinator last year that system wasn't exactly great for avery johnson now colin klein is uh as a
03:32player colin was a lot different probably a little more tougher physical uh hard-nosed as a runner
03:38whereas avery johnson uses that speed that elusiveness but we talked with avery on tuesday
03:44and you just look at him he looks like a bigger guy he looks more physically mature and if you
03:51want
03:52to go uh be aggressive with your legs and you have that body to back it up i think that
03:58makes it just a
03:59whole lot easier now if injuries are in the back of your mind uh oh i don't want to take
04:04this run here
04:05i don't want to get hurt then you start overthinking stuff and when you're not playing with that gut
04:09instinct that good athletes have you lose your fastball and i think avery kind of got in his
04:14own head whatever that reason was whether he wanted to preserve his own body whether he was told that by
04:19somebody who knows but if you can get back to just playing football and just having fun on the field
04:26like when avery johnson was in high school out in that area guys he was having fun and i think
04:31you can
04:32let the pressure get to a little bit but it seems like this new coaching staff's gotten avery well
04:36and he's back for a reason it was not at all a guarantee uh for avery to come back but
04:42when colin
04:42klein uh is back in the little apple i think avery's decision got a lot easier guys yeah gills you
04:48talked
04:48about the the coaching staff is going to be different this upcoming year and it could you know suit his
04:53game better but i also think that you know since i mean since they won the big 12 you look
04:58at the
04:58offensive pieces not named jace brown or ben senate or a running back basically there hasn't really been
05:06a ton do you think that the roster is going to fit uh you know avery's game whatever they end
05:11up doing
05:11with what the offensive scheme is yeah tj i mean we talk all the time year after year after year
05:18and
05:18this was maybe more of a climate issue so we can give klein the benefit of the doubt but there's
05:24always
05:24so much excitement i mean this is excitement season uh in the offseason everything's going well i know
05:29obviously the offensive line's got some injuries but just in terms of those pass catchers man
05:33yes you're looking at a number of capable players who can catch the football but until you see it
05:40you know on the field in a purple jersey it's fair to be cautious because chris climbing never was able
05:47to have consistent playmakers at the wide out and i guess you know maybe the tight end spot obviously
05:52tj mentioned you know ben sinnet i think garrett oakley lincoln cure coming up this year those two
05:58guys can make big impacts but avery johnson is going to need some help you know you're only as strong
06:03as
06:04your weakest link and the offensive line took a couple took a couple hits recently we were at practice
06:10on tuesday as well and no tanner morley no george fitzpatrick no john pastore not great and so
06:18obviously a lot's going to be on avery's shoulders but yeah i mean if jaron tibbs can continue to be
06:23that reliable wide out he was last year josh manning isaiah williams if some of these newcomers
06:28brandon white maybe more on special teams but if these newcomers at the wide out spot can give
06:32give avery some help that would go a long way because maybe avery doesn't have to feel the need
06:38to go out and be superhero and try to put everything on his on his own shoulders i was
06:44going to ask you about the offensive line ryan gilbert gopowercat.com in with us so none of it
06:50i mean i think there's enough tight ends i think football's kind of leaning that way at the moment
06:55but none of it works if the offensive line doesn't work is the offensive line going to work then
07:02you know it was going to be a a low i wouldn't say a low point
07:07but out of all the position groups the offensive line was going to be down on the list and then
07:12you add in these injuries and it is far from a guarantee that you're going to have reliable
07:18steady play i mean go back to last year obviously a different staff and all that but you know a
07:23couple
07:24players that come back from that group from last year you never really got consistency i mean there
07:29was ups and downs but the downs were always there and got you know k-state didn't just have a
07:34five-man
07:35rotation they were rotating guys in and out it's hard to get in your groove when that is the case
07:40now offensive line coach mike schmidt boy i i don't feel bad for him he's got a tough challenge ahead
07:47of
07:47him and i guess as a coach that's where you get paid that's where your bread can get buttered you
07:54know
07:54you got red paint paint the barn red as i say but you know it doesn't sound good for uh
08:01john pastore at all i haven't been able to confirm anything anything like that but
08:05i'd be surprised if it's not a you know a very bad issue for for john pastore i think tanner
08:13morley
08:13is maybe more like week to week is what we're hearing so maybe in the after the first couple
08:19weeks you might get him back so that's encouraging i guess but george fitzpatrick uh shouldn't come as
08:24any surprise you know with his health issues that he's had since last year doesn't seem like he's
08:28going to be partaking uh in much of anything he was in street clothes and so take what you can
08:35get
08:35but you know i think there's there's youth and you know the the whole thing with you know guy like
08:41tanner morley he's got maybe some experience i know he's coming off of an injury but uh you were banking
08:46on some of those experienced guys to be there but one man's misfortune certainly can be another's
08:51opportunity so it's time for that depth to show what it has yeah it boy that's that's concerning
08:58uh other side of the ball than ryan we've heard we've heard glowing reviews on uh wendell gregory
09:05i don't i don't know how much juice the other side has to be perfectly honest i know that gregory
09:11would be a you know that these k-state defenses when they've been good in the climbing years felt
09:16like they were always led by an elite pass rusher um and then they didn't they didn't really have
09:22that last year can gregory fit into that mold that you know fau that uh that mod can he can
09:29he be one
09:30of those type of players for them yeah we did um a series we're doing a series right now on
09:36go power
09:37cat all of all of us give our takes and we did defensive awards and you know mvp x factor
09:44letdown
09:44what have you pretty much everybody said that wendell was going to be that mvp and you know
09:49it's pretty self-explanatory as to why i had him as my x factor though and not the mvp mckay
09:56mason
09:57linebacker was actually my mvp but you know you look at his time i mean at oklahoma state obviously
10:02the ceiling is very high but can he be there as a run stopper you know i think he's got
10:08some stuff
10:08to prove there now if you can be explosive um and in terms of getting to the quarterback and you
10:14know
10:14sacks fumbles all that stuff tackles for loss great but can you do that with the running backs
10:19right can you be more of a consistent versatile piece on that defense so to call him the defense's
10:25mvp is is nothing at all crazy i just feel like he might be you know i wouldn't even say
10:30a boomer
10:31bust type player but you're gonna get him on those big third downs those situations where he can be
10:37that x factor however consistently i think there's still more to prove you look at his stats at oklahoma
10:43state like nothing blows you away per se you're basing it maybe his preseason hype is a little
10:49bit more based off of of potential and where his arrow is pointing but i think the ceiling is very
10:55high for him i just think i'd proceed with i guess a little bit more caution than i feel like
11:01everybody
11:01else is is viewing window yeah uh one one more for me ryan here for you guys in your world
11:08follow
11:09this stuff so well recruiting wise it does feel like some of the client energy from you know from
11:16some of the recruiting wins when he was assistant is really leaking back into things is he is he and
11:22his staff out there winning consistently in the recruiting world right now yeah i don't know if
11:28they're getting you know a five star that is between alabama or kansas state but they're obviously
11:35going all in on recruiting and just some of the stuff you hear uh you know taking them out for
11:42a
11:42boat ride on the lakes nearby stuff like that uh that's not a shot this is not a shot at
11:48all at the
11:48previous staff but this is stuff we're not used to in manhattan you know they're going all out uh you
11:53know we were at practice like i said on tuesday um you know that's got nothing to do with recruiting
11:57obviously but very focused very serious everything's so intentional and that permeates on the field
12:05off the field recruiting you name it so yeah recruiting has been encouraging um and yeah we'll
12:11see avery johnson's that you know there's a lot of guys with connections here to decline and a couple
12:15other of these assistants that stuck around as well ryan gilbert managing editor gopowercat.com
12:21go find all their great work there uh you can find ryan on x at ryan gilbert underscore everything
12:28k-state football everything k-state basketball we didn't even get into the madness of guys trying
12:33to come back to college football uh a conversation for another day ryan we appreciate it uh good luck
12:39with the season if we don't talk to you before then and uh we'll just count down the days here
