Jacob & Tejay discuss Greg Stankeys latest threats as The College Act Bill hangs in the balance.
Transcript
00:00of course the sec gets the mic and here we go again the threats you know the protect college
00:08sports act is important if we don't get it passed we might break away here we go again like why
00:13do
00:14we need to do this all the time do it like this story happens every year right just do it
00:18break
00:18away tough guys break away go see you later see what happens you'll you'll sell out your football
00:25stadiums you will if you break away and just play an sec season and crown the sec champion is whatever
00:32you want to crown it go do it and you'll eventually over time see your league crumble you will not
00:38have
00:39interest in that league across the country if you break away it is this threatening veil that they
00:45continue to make it is a story as old as time well if we don't get our way we could
00:50always just break
00:51away when was the last time the sec won a national championship it's been a while go do it sec
00:58like
00:59i'm so sick of this story you can either work together with everybody or you can go break away
01:05and see what happens because outside of the southeast part of the country kirby smart who's like i've been
01:11saying that nobody's gonna miss georgia football oh man i can't man kansas state might not play georgia
01:20like god nobody cares we care because it's unified we care because we all play to a same championship
01:26it's fun that way i i'm so sick of this wash rinse repeat story of the sec to break away
01:34i agree
01:35speaking of the sec by the way some notable quotes coming out yesterday i'm going to read these to you
01:40and we'll get back into it john mateer the ou quarterback uh out of context quote he says quote
01:45there's not really any time to think if someone's open you just throw it to him
01:50people are getting some fun out of that one i think it's somebody pointed out i think he was
01:53asked about standing in the pocket or deciding to run he said there's no time to think if someone's
01:58open you throw the ball to him uh did you see what drink with said yesterday by the way about
02:02ku
02:04no somebody asked him about the rivalry and drink with said quote he's like or something about the
02:09along the lines of like we got to keep our uh our donors or you know our fans have to
02:16have an
02:17interest and you have to show them that you have an interest of it as well and uh you know
02:20i think
02:20that our team feels that way you know what's the best thing to come out of kansas i-70
02:27uh but okay he also had said uh what do you call a good-looking girl in the state of
02:33kansas a tourist
02:35so drink what's throwing punches in july throwing haymakers okay um all right drink wits i like that he's
02:44stoking the fire there a little bit it's just great rivalry that i've been told about random
02:51yeah that doesn't you know whatever i listen i will tell you that ku fans that i know that are
02:58my age or older if you ask them who they hate the most the answer is missouri i know i
03:03think it's not
03:04k-state it's missouri i'm stoke the fire anyways those were the random those were headlines from earlier
03:10that we didn't get to out of sec media days so i figured i'd let those know but i agree
03:13with you
03:14it's it's this story has happened and it's always the sec and you know we've had the thing with the
03:19big 10 and the sec breaking into their own thing and stuff and and we've always said the same thing
03:24is that if you break away in the sec like it'll be cool and you'll have really cool stadiums and
03:30you'll be able to do all these things and at the end of the day why is that any different
03:34than the
03:35ufl and that's just kind of what it turns into and why is it any different than what we already
03:39have by the way like those two leagues are winning most of the titles in football those two leagues
03:45are dominating they're highest in the rankings every year what what do they think they're going to
03:51gain by breaking away the other part of this too is that you know the sec has always been good
03:58because of you know tradition leads into don't and then it leads into donor support and that's
04:05now it's a big reason why is that they've got a lot of money and they can do these things
04:10and build
04:10giant stadiums and build giant rosters full of money and millions uh and all of the above they've
04:16always been doing that by the way if they break away where does the income come from right how much
04:22is your tv deal going to be worth your tv deal won't be as big how because your ratings won't
04:28be
04:28as big i agree so how does that how does that work they exist in this great fallacy right now
04:33this has always been this way in college sports these two leagues there's a fallacy around the rest
04:38of the country like we are excited here in this part of the country for an upcoming season the chances
04:46that anybody in the region that we live having a chance to win a college football national
04:52championship are so low every year they're like it's it's almost preposterous to think that
05:02teams in our neck of the woods really across the entire big 12 anymore have a legitimate chance to
05:09win a national championship now there have been outliers but when you took texas and oklahoma out
05:15it the chances are less than i mean i don't even know how to quantify it because it's not zero
05:20but it's it's pretty close yet we are hooked and we are in yeah why because it's still possible
05:29there's a reason so people away from the rest of the country they're not gonna like at that point
05:36it's like well no i don't care what happens over there now i this relates so much back to our
05:41soccer
05:42conversation in you know the premier league and the other leagues the feeders into it and the relegation
05:48and those things people are fans of tiny little club teams that are in the fourth division it's
05:55like well why are you a fan of them it's like yeah but imagine if they get to the premier
06:00league right
06:00and and so that's the same thing it's like it's like yeah we're wichita state fans like can wichita
06:05state win a national championship it's like maybe one day right and if they do i'm gonna be there right
06:11exactly that's that's the beauty of college sports that we always talk about but and they're not
06:15there's no there's no you don't gain anything by breaking away like i don't even know you you say
06:21all this and and i get it and i don't think there's actually a threat of this anymore i think
06:26they're
06:27just it's trying to flex and leverage these lawmakers into appeasing all the wants and desires of these
06:34leagues okay but like what would the sec gain like what would be the if you're if you're listing out
06:44pros and cons what's a pro give me one pro of the sec breaking away from the rest of college
06:52football
06:53because i can't think of any i mean for them it's just that they can abide by whatever rules that
06:58they
06:58want to set i guess they don't abide by any of the rules in place this is college football nobody
07:03abides
07:03by the rules so that's and that's the other part they never have that there's never any logic in
07:09this of what if we broke away from the ncaa i'm like and and then where do you where do
07:13your players
07:14come from where are you going to have a transfer portal can players transfer from the big 12 in the
07:19ncaa to the sec where do those players go what if the players want to go back into the ncaa
07:24they
07:25probably can't because they're probably pro athletes at that point if they're not an ncaa athlete it
07:29it's so it's just never going to happen and and they tout this around so much like well we could
07:35just do our own thing right like we don't need them it's like reality is you can't it's and there's
07:41the thing this is the thing does the sec need the ncaa no but they need college sports is and
07:50that's
07:50kind of a different thing that you have to think about national interest yeah the ncaa the ncaa
07:55and college sports aren't really the same thing they are but college sports is the idea of schools
08:02playing sports against each other the ncaa just happens to be the group of people on a panel that
08:07make rules and so could they do it without the ncaa they could they can't do it without the 200
08:13other
08:14schools no they can not not to the same level right not to the same success level so then okay
08:19and i and
08:20again i think the goal here is to push the legislators and and he brought up like some of
08:25the biggest things the antitrust they do have to get that right i agree with greg sankey on that like
08:30you get one chance to get this legislation right it probably won't happen again so the really critical
08:35components the antitrust stuff the stuff where they're getting sued left and right that does have
08:41to be done correctly but you gotta stop with the veiled threats of or we'll just break away nobody cares
08:50because nobody a believes you and b i think most people can see outside of diehard crazy
08:58rabid sec fans of how stupid an idea that is like stop trying to make this power play and be
09:06a
09:06contributor to okay we do have to get this right but why is it the secs me why aren't all
09:13of you sitting
09:14in the same room why isn't greg sankey with brett yormark and every other commissioner and every other
09:18power player in the in the industry with the lawmakers and saying okay collectively here's
09:23what we can't miss on in this deal we have to get this this this and this put the money
09:28aside
09:28right we don't need to talk about revenue share we don't need to talk about any of that other stuff
09:33we got to talk about rules and how do we enforce them first and foremost period when you get out
09:40to
09:40that other stuff do lawmakers need to be involved in revenue splits and shares i don't know that's not
09:48like i'm so less concerned about that than i am lawsuit after lawsuit after lawsuit and you know
09:56like there are other things to focus on and it's like we're gonna get tied up this is what always
10:02happens we're gonna get tied up on the details of well we think we should get eight teams in the
10:08cfp and
10:09we think we should get 19 of the revenue share like that's not the stuff that is killing college
10:16sports right now at the end of the day you can figure that out on your own time like they're
10:21interesting talking points but i don't think the fans care as much about that stuff i agree i and the
10:27other part of this too that we haven't talked about is if you break away if anybody ever did this
10:31and one the question because i think this is some of the jamie pollard said the iowa state athletic
10:37director who's retiring about let them break away but they're they're they're taking football and
10:41basketball and everybody with them too we're gonna go see if you can play an sec gymnastic schedule
10:46without the rest of the country have fun figuring that out we're not gonna help you uh that that's
10:50the that's the part that nobody talks about the way and then even if it is just football
10:55you're an sec champion congrats that's all that's all you can do you can't be an actual champion
11:00you can't you can't schedule south alabama in week 12 anymore not even that like you can't get into
11:06the playoff if you're not in the ncaa see it we'll have our playoff over here and guess what
11:11just happened to the rest of the schools k-state your chances to win in that he just got way
11:16better
11:16yeah i agree you think k-state fans will feel less about that it would be so much of like
11:22wow
11:22auburn won the sec national championship it's like cool 12 teams and they didn't play anybody that was
11:29more than 350 miles away from him it's a it's a silly hopefully the legislators will just get
11:36where they need to go and hopefully greg sankey is an active participant to finding solutions and not
11:41just threatening again i'm so sick of that all right we'll come back we got more sports daily don't go
11:46away
