00:51A Burlington man is recovering tonight after he was attacked by a beaver while he was swimming in Lake George.
00:57This happened during a trip to the popular tourist destination last weekend.
01:01The man says he was trying to help his friend in the water when the animal turned on him.

03:32We were in the water, I think, for like maybe five minutes before my friend started freaking out and screaming.

03:40So I just jumped in the water and then I grabbed whatever it was attacking him, pulled it out.
03:45A young beaver, probably rabid, had started biting.
03:48Short Sleeves says he's never seen a beaver behave like this before.
03:52I was a little freaked out.
03:53I didn't think it was a beaver at first.
03:55I just grabbed this little brown blob in the water.
03:58But yeah, I saw its teeth and its tail and I was like, okay, this is a beaver.
04:03It ended up biting me a few times as I got it out of the water.
04:06So I was like, I got to keep a good grip on this thing.
04:10And then, yeah, and then I just tossed him pretty far.
04:12Short Sleeves says after the beaver swam off, he started getting people out of the water.
04:17Now, the DEC says visitors to Turtle Island should be cautious.
04:22Beavers are typically afraid of humans, but officials say one with rabies may lose that fear.
04:27They're afraid of us.
04:28They don't want to interact with us.
04:29They're not particularly curious about us.
04:31So a normal beaver, if you're, you know, boating along, you're kayaking along,
04:36if a beaver sees you, they will slap the water with their giant tails and they'll swim away.
04:42If you see a beaver approaching you, whether you're swimming or boating,
04:45that would be considered abnormal beaver behavior.
04:48While beavers can get rabies from other animals,
04:51it's very rare for them to pass it along to the rest of the colony.
04:55A beaver would typically probably be mostly a dead-end host.
04:59The virus isn't well adapted to that particular animal.
05:03It may bite another beaver and give that beaver rabies, but in all likelihood, it probably wouldn't.
05:10Short Sleeves says even after this ordeal, he's not afraid of the animal and recognizes how unusual this is.
05:16I was told I'd have a better chance of getting struck by lightning than that ever happening again.
