00:06So hello again my friends and welcome to Saunders Island which is only a 10-minute
00:12hop from where we were at Carcass but this is a 40-minute drive from the main
00:18settlement where we're located in this tiny little cabin self-catered for three
00:24days and it's quite remote you can see all around me is just ocean South Atlantic
00:32and it's absolutely amazing to be in such a remote location such a beautiful
00:38location the main objective here will be the albatross which are nested in what
00:46they call the rookery just over that mountain there but they're flying I can
00:50see them all flying along the cliffs here I don't know if this camera will pick
00:54them up at all they're all along here flying so yeah that's that's the plan
01:01tomorrow is predicted to have really nasty weather lots of wind up to 50 mile an
01:06hour winds apparently and storm coming through so I don't know what we'll get
01:12tomorrow so despite the fact that it's a bit late now it's five o'clock and we're a
01:16bit tired from traveling I'm gonna make my way down to the cliffs to see what I can
01:23get whilst the light is good and see if we make it over to the rookery as well so I
01:30shall catch up with you in a bit hopefully from the cliffs there with an
01:34albatross in shot see you in a sec
01:48I'm just trying to film them on the wing as they glide over the cliffs but the wind is
01:58really hard to cope with to get a steady shot and when they come right above your
02:09head they're coming so fast and amazingly enough even though the atmosphere is so
02:18clean I keep getting dust in my eyes so it's been a while since I've done this
02:28sort of thing and I'm really out of practice but they're just such beautiful birds
02:57I'm filming at 100 frames per second in the hope of getting as much footage as I can get
03:08as much as I possibly can there's a couple flying low over the water that I would really love
03:14to get if I can find them in print
03:30So I've also put the EVF on which makes it slightly easier to hold them in frame and hold focus
03:40but even with that it's a real challenge
03:49Okay here comes a bunch
03:52Let's see how long I can keep them in frame
03:56and focused
04:09Oh that was actually a petrol I was focused on
04:12Hmmm
04:15I'm
04:16I'm
04:16I'm
04:16I'm
04:32I'm
04:33I'm
04:40I'm
04:49And there's a few cormorants down on the rocks too.
04:58So I'm trying to catch them as they come over the rock, the cliff face, because then I get
05:05them for a little bit at least with the blue of the sea as a background.
05:25OK, what I think I'll do is quit from here for a little bit and head down to the rookery
05:36where they're nesting and see if I can get any shots there.
05:51OK, so I walked down to the rookery where the albatross are nesting all along the cliffs
05:58here on little ledges.
06:01Their nests are like these big pots and they're just sitting on them.
06:07And they're absolutely stunning, stunning birds, I'm at a loss for words to be honest.
06:18And they're absolutely huge as well, I didn't realise quite how big they are.
06:24You see them on the wing flying and they just look like big gulls but then one lands next
06:29to you and it's the size of a goose.
06:33Big heavy birds and then they fly so gracefully, it's amazing.
06:50Absolutely unmatched flying ability.
06:57So yeah, I've done a little bit of filming of them flying around and sat on the nest, a
07:02few back lit shots that I hope will work as the sun is setting in that direction now.
07:13I would like to get down lower but I'm very wary about upsetting them to try and get a more
07:20on-level angle of them which I might try and do but if I see that they're getting upset then
07:30I'll just back off.
07:32It's not worth it.
07:41Right, end of day one at Saunders Island with the Albatross and it's absolutely wonderful.
07:49Tomorrow is predicted to be a horrible day weather-wise so I don't know if that will come true and
07:55if it does what kind of shots you might be able to get.
07:58But I shall catch up with you tomorrow.
08:05Okay, so right now is not the following day, the day following the previous segment that you saw where I
08:15was filming the black-browed Albatross.
08:19It's the day after that. Yesterday, which was the day after that, was absolutely foul, foul weather. Ferocious winds up
08:31to 60 mile an hour, driving rain and hail made it really impossible for us to come out and do
08:40any kind of filming or shooting.
08:44Today is slightly less, but still not great. We've got squalls coming through of rain which I'm just ducking out
08:52of at the moment.
08:55The wind is still pretty strong at 40 miles an hour or so, which is making shots, getting steady shots
09:02almost impossible.
09:03So I'll be amazed actually if I can steady anything in post, if I can stabilise it. We shall see.
09:12So yeah, I'm just waiting for the wind and rain to die down a little bit and then I'll get
09:19back over to do some more filming of the Rockhoppers, which are about a kilometre further on from where the
09:25Albatross were.
09:28So yeah, that's it from, that'll be it from Saunders Island. Unfortunately, tomorrow we're leaving.
09:36So conditions here haven't been that great, although we did get a good afternoon on the first day.
09:43So the next video will be from Pebble Island. In the meantime, I think I shall sign off here on
09:49this one.
09:51Hopefully I'll be able to show you some footage now of what I've been able to get so far and
09:56hopefully what I will get as the day progresses if this wind dies down a little bit.
10:03So yeah, thank you so much for following along. Hope you're enjoying seeing the images from the Falklands and I
10:11shall catch up with you in the next video from Pebble Island.
10:15See you again soon. Bye for now.
