01:05Today I've come out to an island called Carcass Island and I am sat on the beach at the
01:11moment with the most amazing elephant seals and I don't know if you can see them, they're
01:22just amazing, literally just a few yards away.
01:28I hope you can hear me as well because one of the things that has prevented me from doing
01:34much videography, vlogging, is the wind has just been constantly strong.
01:42So I've been worried that I won't be heard anyway, but I've managed to sort out the batteries
01:49on my little mic and hopefully now you can hear me.
01:53There's two just now that are wrestling each other.
02:02They have these sort of unserious tussles with each other.
02:13It's so bright at the moment.
02:14It's a wonderful day, beautiful light, but almost too strong and I'm struggling to actually see
02:21the screen on the back to focus.
02:31But they are just such beautiful, beautiful creatures.
02:36And they are absolutely huge and unlike the sea lions that I filmed that hopefully I will show
02:45you a clip of from Bleecker Island, unlike the sea lions, these guys are beautiful guys basically.

05:57me I might get squished but it wouldn't be on purpose.

11:09that grows on these islands and in amongst all the tussock are lots of elephant seals.
11:20I'm just walking through them, so there's one literally right down here.
11:27It seems they're all molting right now.

11:39He's huge.
11:42So let's see if I can wend my way as carefully and as quietly as I can so as not
11:51to disturb

12:43around the cove to the other side of the rocks there's a few more elephant seals
12:50here there's a Magellanic penguin right there and there's a couple of regular
13:02oyster catches and blackish oyster catches down here and as well as a goose
13:08that I don't recognize so if I get a shot of that I'll have to put there have to
13:14look it up and put the name up for you
13:24but it's absolutely stunning place
13:32light is super bright at the moment so I'm having trouble seeing things on the back of
13:39the screen as well to focus doing steady shots for this wind is a challenge as well
13:46might actually remove that hood because it catches the lens the catches the wind
13:55it helps ever so slightly

15:59Okay, so I've come down to another beach where there's more sea lines all the way up there.
16:09There's a penguin, the little Magellanic penguins and various ducks and geese.
16:18There's a colony of dolphin gulls as well.

17:05This is a morning of day two on Carcass Island.
17:10And it's a little bit more overcast, a lot more windy than it was yesterday.
17:19Fewer elephant seals around on this beach than the beach that I was at yesterday.
17:26And they seem to be pretty inactive just at the moment.
17:30There's a couple that are play fighting out in the shallows there on the bay.
17:36There's another couple that are sleeping just along here on the sand.
17:42And a couple of juveniles over here also sleeping.
17:50The dolphin gull colony is just above me here as well, which you can probably hear, making
17:57a bit of a racket.
18:00So hopefully we'll get a few more images today.
18:06Most of the stuff that I'm going to be doing out here for filming work, the photography, is
18:12not really going to be that story driven, purely because of the time in any one place.
18:18It doesn't really give me time to create a story, other than the briefest of, you know,
18:25going fishing, coming back, feeding little ones, that sort of thing.
18:29A little bit of a sequence in those, maybe.
18:33But generally speaking, what I'm hoping to do is put together a nice vlog for you from my
18:39visit here to the Falklands.
18:43It's an absolutely incredible, incredible place.
18:47And I can't recommend it enough to you to, if you have the chance to come visit, you really
18:54should take the opportunity and come and see it once in your life.
18:59It really is incredible.
19:00Oh, it's just having a scratch.
19:16That's a shot I've been wanting to get.
19:19As they lie there sleeping, they tend to have a little bit of a scratch, which is quite cute.
19:24So, yeah, in terms of kit, I bought a couple of new things for this trip.
19:33The first being the tripod.
19:36This is what's called a hi-hat.
19:39So it's a very low tripod, really sturdy and quite heavy and made for taking heavy weight,
19:52kit, which means that it can easily take the weight of my kit.
19:58And it's got a 70, this one has the 75 mil bowl head, which means it's easy to plonk down
20:04and then make sure you're level.
20:08So this is a fabulous little tripod instead of carrying the huge monstrosity that I have
20:15to a location like the Falklands where you're really restricted on the flights and what have
20:20you to the islands in the amount of weight that you can carry with you.
20:24So you end up bringing camera gear and just bringing one or two changes of clothing because
20:31you just can't carry the weight on the small planes.
20:36The other addition is this small rig follow focus.
20:42And I discovered this by accident.
20:46It's a little bit more expensive than the Tilta one that I was using.
20:52But the beauty of this is that it's got reversible gearing on the follow focus, which means that
21:01for me, I can, on my Canon lenses, I can switch direction of the movement of the gears.
21:09So that it makes it more intuitive to focus.
21:13So that when I dial away from me, I move, the focus moves away into the distance and when
21:18I dial back, I'm bringing the focus forward.
21:21It makes for a much more intuitive focusing system for me.
21:27So those are the two new bits of kit that I have.
21:29That's all the new kit I have.
21:32But I'll put links to these in the description just in case you're interested.

21:46at the moment.

26:36Gentoo penguins.
26:39And quite a few of them have little chicks.
26:44Although, most of the ones that have chicks, they're lying down on the nest as you can see behind me.

26:55They're lying down on the chicks themselves, so it's not often we get a quick look at the little chicks.
27:02One of them has quite a large chick, but he's not facing this direction at the moment.

27:09Oh, one has just stood up there.

27:21Is she going to feed?
27:32She's just curled up tightly.
27:35The islands are so windy.
27:37Trying to get stable shots is a real challenge here.
27:46So, I'm hoping that I'll be able to stabilize most of them in the post, without too much jelly wobbling
27:53around the edges.

27:58It's an absolutely beautiful location here.
28:03So, I'm going to spend a little bit of time with the gentos.
28:07And then, hopefully, we'll go up to the top of that little peak behind me here to see if we
28:13can get some overall views.
28:14And apparently, there's a crested caracara nest up there as well, which we're going to try and find and see
28:22if we can get shots of the caracaras.
28:27There's a chance they might have chicks, too.
28:30So, there's three little colonies like this of gentoo.
28:33There's one here.
28:34There's one further around to the left here.
28:36And there's one on the other side of this little valley here.

29:00That gives me a view down onto this tree where there are a couple of missing crested caracaras, which are
29:07absolutely stunning.
29:08They've been posing on top of the tree.
29:12I think the male has been performing.
29:16Whether it's a courtship or whether it's a protection for his mate, I don't know.
29:22But they're sat there squawking, clicking, and he throws his head back as he's doing it.
29:30They're absolutely gorgeous birds.
29:45I don't know if the microphone with the wind will pick that up.

30:24It's only a little bit, and you can touch the ground because it's very beautiful.
