00:00Thank you for listening.
01:13So, hello my friends and welcome to another DSLR camera trapping video.
01:17It's been a while, mostly due to equipment failure and then I was away for a few weeks
01:24as well back in the UK.
01:27So, I'm back in Greece now, equipment repaired, some replaced, so the flash guns are both replaced.
01:37I've located in Germany, actually, on eBay, a couple of SB28s, Nikons, which are well known
01:48to be the premier flash for this purpose.
01:51So, I was able to acquire both of those for $100 in total.
01:56So, that was a win-win.
01:59And I'm back again and I've set up the trap here at one of the locations that I've used
02:06in the past by this, where am I?
02:08Yeah, fallen branch tree, in the hope that I might be able to get the fox and the jackal
02:16that I missed out on last time.
02:19So, I'll just talk you through quickly.
02:20Actually, it's basically pretty much exactly the same set-up as it was then.
02:25Let me show you.
02:27So, I have the camera itself down here.
02:32One of the flash is there pointing as a sort of side-on, full-on lighting for the fallen tree,
02:42where I hope the animal will come through.
02:46The other flash unit is up there somewhere, as a down light, and I have the contraption
02:55sensor on the stump here, just behind the fallen log, so hopefully that'll trigger as
03:01the animal comes past the fallen log and set it off.
03:05I've also put, on the tree here, a trail cam, as well as on the tree back there, another trail
03:12cam, looking back down the path this way, to try and survey the whole scene.
03:20Okay, so that's the set-up.
03:22I will leave it here for a few days.
03:26And sorry for, I'm dripping with sweat here, it's 32 degrees and incredibly humid.
03:32So apologies for all the dripping.
03:37So I'll leave it here for about a week, and then come back and hopefully we'll have some
03:41images on it.
03:42One of the things I wanted to address quickly, as I think quite a few of you use cam traptions
03:49equipment as well.
03:51And whilst I was in the UK, I acquired a couple of these little extensions, battery extensions,
03:59for the triggers.
04:05And it's great because it doubles the life of your trigger, so that's a bonus.
04:11The only issue I have with it is that I don't think they're very well made, and I love cam
04:15traption stuff, so I'm saying this with love, please cam traptions make it better.
04:21The batteries are really loose when you put them in.
04:26So much so, that if the battery is loose, and you have this plugged into your trigger,
04:33it renders the trigger, and you see how easily that just pops out as well, the leads just
04:38really fall out too easily.
04:40It renders the trigger, even though it has the batteries enclosed within it, its own batteries,
04:49it renders it useless.
04:51And it took me forever, I came down yesterday to do this, and I had set it all up, and
04:57then
04:58it wasn't working, it wasn't triggering, and I couldn't figure out why.
05:00And I got it home, took it all down, took it home, and I discovered that it was because
05:05the batteries in this little extra battery pack were loose, and that was what was stopping
05:12it from triggering basically.
05:13And they fall out really easily.
05:15So I've had to put a little bit of elastic band, just to keep them tight in there.
05:20So do be aware of that if you have bought these, or are going to buy them.
05:26Just make sure, if your camera is not triggering, that could be the reason why.
05:32So yeah, right, I shall see you in a few days time, hopefully, back here, and we'll have
05:39some pictures on the camera, so I'll see you then.
06:24Okay, so the DSLR camera trap has been
06:33in situ for exactly a week, seven nights, and I'm just walking in now through this amazing
06:45forest to hopefully find my camera still intact, despite all the thunderstorms we've
06:56had, and hoping against hope that I've managed to record something, so I shall see you at
07:06the camera.
07:08Okay, so I've got through, the camera appears to be intact, and I'll put you here and see
07:16if it triggers when I walk through.
07:30Okay, so the camera triggered, but the flashes didn't, which means the
07:48batteries have probably died on the flashes, so hopefully that's a good sign.
07:56It means that something's come through and been triggering the flashes, with any luck.
08:00We shall see.
08:01I'm going to check the trail cam up on the tree there first, so let's see what that has on
08:06it.
08:06If anything, bear with me.
08:12Okay, so of the trail cams, the one I don't think is particularly well placed, so I can't
08:24see from the little screen what exactly has been caught, but it's been triggered a few times.
08:29And then the other one I think it got jackals, and the only thing I could tell from this one
08:38here, the close by one that I didn't position very well, was it got triggered by some mice.
08:45So let's see how this is doing, and what, if anything, is on the camera.
09:03Okay, so that's 98 shots, a lot of which are me setting up and what have you.
09:12Oh, what's that?
09:15Oh, I've got a wildcat.
09:25And a very dimly lit shot of a badger.
09:38Oh, and a very long exposure, so it's rendered him see-through of a fox.
09:51And again, another badger, a nice one.
09:57I think it's not.
10:01It was either a bit foggy in the night, or it hasn't, or it didn't focus it properly.
10:15Oh, and a little beach martin.
10:20Okay.
10:21So, not too bad.
10:24Something to work on.
10:27I'll readjust the focus and the exposure because they are slightly underexposed.
10:37Change out the cards, change out the batteries, and leave it for another week and hopefully we'll get something more.
10:47Okay, so I'm just going to do that, and I shall talk to you again in a second.
10:54Okay, so that's everything switched out, batteries and what have you.
11:02Sorry, I thought I just heard something.
11:07Yeah, so switched out all the batteries, reset the camera, and recovered the cards.
11:21So, I will be able to take a look at those now when I go home, and I'll show you
11:26whatever I got I managed to get in a second.
11:33I think one of the reasons why some of the photos might be slightly misty is because I thought I'd
11:41better clean the front element.
11:44And when I went to do that, because I hadn't noticed it before, there was a blooming great spider's web
11:52over the top of it.
11:58So, some little spider thought it a good spot to make his web, so I had to clean that off.
12:07And, yeah, I've recovered one of the cards off the trail cams as well, so I can have a look
12:16at that.
12:17But the other one I've had to leave in place because the replacement card I have doesn't seem to want
12:24to be accepted by the trail cam.
12:26So, right.
12:31And on that note, I shall close this video, because I have this terrible habit of making ridiculously long videos.
12:48And I shall show you what pictures I've managed to get so far, and tune in next time for the
13:00updates.
13:01So, in the meantime, thanks so much for watching, and I shall catch up with you all again very soon.
13:10Bye for now.
13:42Bye for now.
13:52Bye.
13:56Bye.
