Dear Friends,

You join me today on one of the flooded meadows near Lake Kerkini in Greece where I set up the pop-up hide to revive a story I have been meaning to work on for a couple of years now... filming the secretive lives of the Golden Jackals.

This is a very long-term project and could well take a year or two to complete so I hope you will join me on this journey.

Many thanks for watching and for all your support.

00:00Thank you for listening.
00:37So, hello my friends, good morning.
00:40It's been a while since I was able to bring you a video, mainly due to a couple of health
00:46issues I had.
00:47A tooth issue, and also the chap that delivered my winter wood in his big truck, when he entered
00:57the yard, he went through my septic tank.
01:01Which has meant a couple of weeks worth of repairs solidly for me doing that, and put
01:07me out of action in terms of being able to come down and do some filming, as that was
01:13quite urgent to be repaired.
01:16So, anyhow, I'm down by the lake again, on one of the flooded meadows, this is the second
01:22morning I've come down here, in an attempt to revive a project that I started a couple
01:30of years ago, but since took second, third place in my priorities, which is to film the
01:42golden jackals and do a little story on them.
01:47This is one of the crossing points for the jackals, from the forest where they den, to the riparian
01:57forest which runs along the river, where all the cormorants, egrets, herrings, etc., they
02:05all nest, and it's a happy feeding ground for them.
02:11They are predominantly, what's the word, opportunistic scavengers.
02:20They do hunt as well, but they do like to scavenge.
02:27And there's, from the thousands of birds that are nesting, lots of little ones fall out of
02:33their nests and what have you, so they get to make a meal of them.
02:38So, this, like I said, is a crossing area, so I'm hoping to get some footage of them as
02:43they come across.
02:44I got a couple of shots yesterday, but the dawn yesterday was a bit clouded over, so I
02:52didn't get too much.
02:55This morning the sky is pinking up nicely, now as I've got about probably 20 minutes before
03:00dawn, before the sun comes up.
03:04And the light is starting to get a little bit stronger now, so hopefully I'll be able
03:08to start filming soon.
03:10Yeah, so bear with me whilst the light comes up, and hopefully I'll be back with you in
03:17a minute with something interesting in the frame, so I shall see you in a sec.
03:21Okay, so the first stalks have started arriving, I had one come really close by in front of me.
03:28Unfortunately the light is still a little bit low, so it's probably going to be a very
03:32noisy image.
03:38And I'm getting buzzed by the mozzies here, which is a real issue when we're photographing
03:45down by the water here in the summer.
03:49It's actually quite warm, so over 20 degrees.
03:52But I'm all zipped up like this with gloves and everything because of the mozzies.
03:57And I've also got with me, which seems to work quite well actually, I got hold of this
04:03Thermacell mosquito repellent.
04:10It burns these little blue tablets.
04:15And it uses little gas bottles, which I was surprised about, I didn't expect that.
04:20I thought it would be just one of these USB plug-in things that I just have another battery
04:25to charge.
04:27So it works well, but the thing is you won't be able to travel with it unfortunately, because
04:32of the gas bottles, unless you can get them locally where you're going.
04:35But I'll put a link to this because it works quite well.
04:40So yeah, link in the description below if you're interested in one of these.
04:43There's still not quite enough light for me to work with.
04:53So, there's another stalker going the distance there.
05:15So, disappointingly, there's been very little wildlife come down, just a couple of stalks,
05:24a couple of magpies.
05:27A little egret came past, but that was in the very early hours when I had no light to actually
05:35film it.
05:37have no sign of the jackals.
05:39No sign of the jackals.
05:42Sun has been out about ten minutes now, over the mountain.
05:49Lots of activity on the cormorant nest trees over there.
05:59But that's in the far distance, but nothing right in front of me like I expected, which is a little
06:05bit disappointing.
06:28Absolutely nothing.
06:34Well, regardless, I'll hang on for another hour at least.
06:41Once the light is still soft enough for me to film, I'm not too hot.
06:47to be getting too much distortions in the hope that something comes along.
06:56There's a heron came in on one of the ponds in the far distance.
07:02I've lost sight of them now.
07:04I don't know if it was a grey heron or a purple heron.
07:13And there's a spindle as well, going into the same pond.
07:17So, in terms of what I've managed to record this morning is very little, very few animals
07:26came down, none in front of me, close by, all quite distant, mostly storks, white storks,
07:35and sight nor sound of the jackals, so I shall have to try again another day.
07:44In the meantime, I'll show you what footage I was able to get yesterday.
07:48I did get a couple of nice shots.
07:51I don't think it's enough to put a proper sequence together, but I'll show you them
07:55nevertheless, especially seeing as it's going to be part of a larger ongoing project with
08:04the jackals, trying to get different behaviours to make up a decent story.
08:13So, that's going to take time anyway.
08:16But, yeah, thank you so much for following along and watching, if you've lasted this long
08:21into the video.
08:23Thank you also, I just hit 4000 subscribers on the channel, which is amazing.
08:27Never expected to get that many, so thank you all for your support.
08:31It is really appreciated.
08:34So, until next time, it just remains for me to say thank you again for watching, and I'll
08:40see you all again soon.
08:41Bye for now.
09:12I'll see you all again soon.
