00:02As you can make us a chance.
00:13I'm sorry.
00:52Okay, so hello my friends, I hope you're all doing well and welcome to another video.
00:57Today I am on a certain part of the lake where a friend of mine in the background here has
01:06built this amazing hide in this hidden field basically.
01:12So it's this little field near the lake and it's totally surrounded by forest.
01:20And he's built this hide to be able to photograph and film the jackals.
01:28We're still waiting for some to turn up. Hopefully later this afternoon they will make an appearance.
01:34This is on the route down from the mountain to the lake so they do pass through this field.
01:42And he's got some nice setups here with fallen trees and tree stumps and what have you and a couple
01:50of hay bales he's put in the field as well.
01:54And as well as that we have, Christoph mentions that in the forest just here somewhere is nesting a lesser
02:04spotted eagle.
02:05And there's a pair and they're both coming down as well and perching on the branches that he's set out
02:15here.
02:16So that's quite exciting too.
02:18So we'll hang out here for a while and see what comes along.
02:25Hopefully I'll get back to you in a minute or so with something interesting in frame.
02:30So I'll see you in a sec.
02:32The first two jackals have come through.
02:36They're just hovering around the edge of the field.
02:40One year is back.
02:43I think they were repaired because they had a...
02:47One came up to the other and it was almost as if they kissed.
02:54Here's one in the back there now.
02:58It's absolutely beautiful amongst the flowers.
03:10It's hiding in the long grass.
03:25What a beautiful animal.
03:27Goodness me.
03:29What a beautiful animal.
03:44Goodness me.
03:46Absolutely stunning.
03:48So he just crossed over in the field.
03:54And I think it's made it somewhere around there as well.
03:58So they're just on the edge of the field.
04:05I think they'll come back across.
04:10Contrary to popular belief which I think I've mentioned in previous videos with the jackals.
04:16Is that here at least all the local people think that they are a pack animal.
04:23And that's not actually true.
04:25Whilst they are very social.
04:28They stick to their strict family units.
04:31So you'll get mum, dad and cubs.
04:34But they do socialize with other jackals.
04:37But they don't hunt.
04:38If you like as a pack.
04:42As local legend might have it here.
04:46The other really interesting thing with the jackals.
04:50Is that one of the litter.
04:57When they grow up and they fledge if you like.
05:00And they leave.
05:02One of those previous litter will stay behind and act as a babysitter.
05:06For the new litter.
05:08So that when mum and dad go off hunting.
05:13The cubs are actually being looked after by one of their previous litter.
05:22Oh, he's back again.
05:24He's just behind the tree there.
05:28Let's see if I can find him.
05:30I can search him.
05:32There he is.
05:54What was that?
05:55Yes, sir.
05:57It was four.
05:58Four thousand now.
05:59We got seen only two.
06:00Oh, my goodness.
06:03More.
06:05There are two more running around.
06:08Maybe six.
06:09Okay.
06:12Are they right at the back of the field?
06:13Yeah, they will start talking.
06:15Okay.
06:16They've got a magpie under a tree as well.
06:20They're playing in the back there.
06:23Oh my goodness.
06:25Okay, bear with me.
06:27Some individuals, I know them.
06:29Okay.
06:30And I have my favorite guy.
06:32He's a male, and he's missing one eye.
06:34Oh really?
06:35Maybe from a fight, I don't know exactly what it is.
06:38I mean, I'll never find out.
06:39Okay.
06:40But he's a really robust animal.
06:43Wow.
06:43Oh, he's missing one eye.
06:45He's really...
06:45Nice.
06:46Hopefully we'll see him.
06:47Oh, there's another one just popped out.
06:50He's by the log there.
07:01Incredible.
07:03So the jackals have been coming through the field the whole time.
07:08Coming and going basically, and playing amongst themselves.
07:13And briefly, the lesser spotted eagle came down as well and was perched at the top of a tree.
07:20I think it was...
07:22I think it was...
07:22Was it the male?
07:23Was it the top of the tree?
07:25The female?
07:26The female was at the top.
07:27The male was at the top.
07:29And it came down onto the ground.
07:32And then they landed on a branch further away.
07:35But it was totally behind all the leaves and everything.
07:38And they weren't actually going.
07:39They weren't mating.
07:41But we couldn't get a shot of it because it was right in amongst the foliage.
07:45But we could understand what was happening from the calling.
07:53So we're just waiting to see now if any more jackals will come through.
08:01Okay, so after about an hour of them having disappeared, they made a reappearance just now.
08:12And in the far corner of the field from the tall grass and amongst all the flowers they were playing.
08:23They're right on the edge of the field, so they're still quite far away.
08:26Hoping that they'd come a little bit closer.
08:30In the meantime, the blackwood peckerels appeared on the dead tree across the way there.
08:37I'm ready to go.
08:45But other than that, it's been a bit quiet.
09:05I'm checking my best chance.
09:07I'm checking my best chance.
09:16Oh, I'm sorry.
09:27Just that you said.
09:59That was a wood pigeon that just flew.
10:08Unfortunately, they were around the side of the hide when they were howling and I couldn't
10:13get a shot of them actually howling.
10:19But that was one heck of a chorus.
10:26That was amazing.
10:27That was amazing.
10:34I've got one in shot at the moment.
10:36I think he doesn't quite know what's going on.
10:39He's just looking around in the middle of the field.
10:47And he's off.
10:55That was really intense.
11:00There's another one.
11:01He's just in the grass on two of them.
11:19There's another one.
11:23There's another one.
11:26There's another one.
11:27There's another one.
11:28There's another one.
11:44There's another one.
11:47There's another one.
11:49He's just saying the one in the middle here might be a pregnant female.
11:55We'll see if we can find out.
11:59Because the grass is so tall, you can't really see much of the belly.
12:08They disappeared into the long grass now.
12:11I love the way you see them disappear and then their head pops up out of the grass.
12:21So they should be near giving birth now, the females, any time now I should do.
12:27At the end of this month maybe, something like this now, maybe two weeks maybe.
12:34So I think we'll have to come back again as well in a few weeks' time.
12:39And see if they might bring their cubs down to this field.
12:44So I've got three of them in shot now.
12:46We'll see what they do before they're starting to group up again.
12:51There's five or six of them out there.
13:09They're all just lying around in the field now.
13:14I've been taking a few stills as well when I can.
13:18Take a break from this.
13:19Use the camera which I've got set up down below me here for a few stills.
13:25And they look amazing in amongst all the flowers.
13:29Just doing some portraits.
13:45He's watching me in vertical.
13:51I can see only one jackal now at the moment.
13:55Just sat in the grass back there.
14:03Separate in the long grass and the flowers.
14:18Okay, so once again they've been gone for about an hour.
14:25And we're starting to lose the light a little bit now.
14:34So, probably give it another half hour or so.
14:39And make a move.
14:44I will try and put together a little sequence of all the clips I've managed to get today.
14:51And a little slideshow of the photos as well at the end.
14:56It just remains for me to say thank you so much for following along and watching.
15:02If you would like to see more of this sort of thing and a few tutorials that I'm planning for
15:09later in the summer,
15:10please do like and subscribe to the channel to keep updated with all of that.
15:16And I'm also going to create a page on my website for this hide.
15:23So anyone interested can book with us to come here and experience this first hand with the golden jackals here
15:34at Lake Kirkhine.
15:36In addition to all the other wonderful things that we have here.
15:40Especially now in the spring with all the summer migrants coming over from Africa.
15:47It's starting to get really busy here with the birds.
15:51Going about their mating and bearing and raising chicks and all of that.
15:59So hopefully I'll be bringing you more of those videos as the weeks progress.
16:04So yeah, thanks again so much for watching and I'll see you again soon. Bye for now.
16:10Bye.
