00:00My name's Gemma. I work for the national charity School Food Matters and I'm here today delivering a project called
00:07the Young Marketeers Project, which is a growing and enterprise project that we're doing at the Broodinale Primary today.
00:14Hi, I'm Tom. I'm from Broodinale Primary School, a class teacher. We've been working with Gemma and School Food Matters
00:21for three years now and it's just a wonderful project that the kids have really enjoyed.
00:25The School Food Matters is all about food education and how important it is and it's proven that kids that
00:32know where food comes from are more likely to eat healthy and so that's a really big like vision of
00:37what we're trying to do and to let the kids to know that they can grow their own food from
00:43seed to plate.
00:44The market day for the schools in Leeds is Friday, 10th of July at Leeds-Kirkgate Markets and it's 11
00:51till 1.
00:52We learned a lot about how to plant them and where to plant them and in what weather, which would
00:59be in usually sunlight, so spring or autumn to spring.
01:03But we have some runner beans, courgettes, potatoes and chard.
01:09My favourite thing about this project is when I see the transformation about the seeds to seed to like...
01:17Big plants.
01:18Yeah, to big plants.
01:19For the runner beans, we put them on like some sticks and then when we first checked, when we first
01:28plant them, they weren't as big, but when we just recently checked on them, they're nearly going like to the
01:34top of the stick.
01:35They've been so engaged from the start, whether it's from potting their seeds and seeing this tiny thing and nurturing
01:43it, getting the fingers dirty, getting in the soil, getting in the mud and then actually seeing the end produce
01:50is fantastic.
01:51The confidence they get after going to market is, yeah, it's really inspiring.
01:55And what they get to learn throughout the project, you know, like their fascination of eating a pea and then
02:01learning that the pea is also the seed is, yeah, it's really inspiring.
02:05Rather than it just being delivered to them on a plate, they're actually involved in the whole process.
02:10We sell our vegetation, we will wear gloves because we don't want to get our jums on it and we
02:19will smile when we like, when we give them our charred courgette and stuff like that.
02:26My favourite thing is growing the courgette, the runner beans and the chard because I liked how everyone had smiles
02:36on their face and we all like the teamwork over here and I like how we like help the plants
02:44and help the bees because bees are the reason we have food basically.
