00:00My name's Andy Black. I'm the Pathway Leader for Fine Art on the Extended Diploma in Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University.
00:07We run this project where, very kindly, the Leeds markets allow us to come down and the students respond to the colours and the place and the people and the community down at the market.
00:19And they generate a project based on that.
00:22And each of the different pathways, we've got fine art, graphic communication, fashion textiles and 3D, each have had a brief to respond to the market and also make something for the market.
00:35Within my work generally, I'm super interested in people's lived experiences and talking about how different people spend their time, what they want from their community and stuff like that.
00:48So my work was very heavily dependent on listening to people and then I use like fragments of conversation as an overlay for a 4D video.
01:00I noticed like all the music that I get played in here and like all the movement of people, so I made a lot of stop motions and I chose to use like more illustration because I wanted to make a portfolio for uni for illustration.
01:11It was a bit challenging because a lot of mine was stop motions and I didn't think they were two apple cut, apple cut things, you know, you sell, like stickers and stuff.
01:18So what I did was make little cute little figures of like girls dancing, my market and made a few prints of things that I'd made.
01:25My key focus was all the different cultures in the market and I wanted to incorporate all of them and possibly add my own passion for a culture of Polynesian and Caribbean and Hawaiian, all in that sense.
01:43So I designed a model building of a replica of one of the stalls over that side of it would be a tiki bar.
01:52In Old Butchers Row we've got an exhibition of posters which summarise each of the students' projects.
01:58It's a really dynamic course, it's ideal for students who know they want to be creative and maybe A-levels isn't the right option.
02:07They know they want to be creative, they know they want to paint and make stuff and design stuff from the get-go.
02:14Compared to like Manchester and London it's quite an underrated city.
02:17Especially for art, like walking around all the time I feel like it's underappreciating how much art there is in Leeds.
02:23Especially like places like Hornickshire there will always be like little indie artists making cute little prints and stuff like that.
02:29The thought of AI is very scary and it might take over but if you've got the passion then it's not going to affect you.
02:38Leeds is an incredibly creative city I think and the market is an incredibly creative place as well.
02:44So what we're interested in in the university is giving our students visibility in this city.
02:50They're all artists and designers in their own right already so the market and the exhibition are part of that exposure and being part of it.
02:58and being part of it.
