Tobin goes off into a rant after Eury Pérez threw 7 perfect innings with 8 strikeouts on 92 pitches when the Marlins said that’s enough of being awesome for the day!

00:00I'm like, Uri is doing it.
00:03Yep.
00:04He is doing it.
00:06I mean, it was eight strikeouts.
00:10I mean, they were barely hitting the ball.
00:12Leroy, the man was perfect.
00:14Perfect.
00:14Yes, yes.
00:15That's all you have to say.
00:17Wait, I don't need to say great.
00:19I don't need to say good.
00:20He was perfect.
00:21He was perfect.
00:21That's it.
00:22And I'm like, what are we doing?
00:28Here's the thing in sports.
00:30I'm going to just tell you this.
00:32Right?
00:34There's only one thing that takes a backstage from regular training,
00:42regular situations, and regular game plans.
00:48There's only one thing.
00:49You know what that is?
00:50History.
00:51Yeah.
00:52History.
00:53When you have a player, for example,
00:57if you're up by 50 and your running back has 290 yards in the middle of the fourth quarter
01:05with no running back, have ever run for 300 yards,
01:10you're going to put your running back in and let him get the 300.
01:13Of course.
01:14That's not an insult to the other team.
01:17You are now going to be in the history books.
01:22Now, as long as baseball been around, even with, what's his name?
01:28Artie Burns from back in the day.
01:30What was his name?
01:32Oyster Burns?
01:34Oyster Burns.
01:35There it is.
01:36Even that long.
01:38Artie Burns went to, wait, what?
01:39I was like the Kings quarterback?
01:42No, no.
01:43He means Oyster Burns.
01:44Oyster Burns from the St. Louis Browns.
01:46So, as long as they've been around, there's only been 24 individuals to throw a perfect game.
01:5724.
02:00Your guy needs six outs.
02:06I don't care if he struggles and gives up two hits, then you're ripping.
02:11Of course.
02:11But you get, because guess what?
02:13The way he was pitching, who's to say he could get six outs and ten pitches?
02:18Dude, he was killing it.
02:20Right?
02:20You have somebody on the, you have Lake Bakker.
02:23You have him out there.
02:26You have him ready to go whenever Ayuri gives up a base runner.
02:31You know, which perfect means no walks.
02:34So, he's killing it.
02:36Nothing.
02:36He walks him.
02:37No errors.
02:38Even if he walks somebody.
02:39No errors.
02:40No errors.
02:40He faced 21 batters.
02:41Have somebody there.
02:43But, I just, I think that's crazy.
02:47I think we've just, we have in sports lost the plot on some of these things that matter.
02:54And everybody's always playing like, are you guys in sports or are you guys in insurance?
03:01Because that's what it feels like sometimes.
03:03You're always like, well, I don't know.
03:05What about, what about having him down the line and having him ready?
03:09Dude, hey, this guy is six foot eight.
03:13He's a horse.
03:15Okay.
03:16He's already had Tommy Johnson.
03:18You guys tried this already with him, by the way.
03:20And he got Tommy John surgery.
03:22Nobody knows what they're doing in sports when it comes to protecting arms, keeping arms fresh.
03:30Nobody has it down to a science because every one of these behemoths who throws a hundred miles per hour
03:36at one point, they're going under the knife.
03:39Nobody knows what they're doing.
03:41Nobody.
03:42You can tell me, you know, you can throw every science, analytic, whatever you want at me.
03:49None of you know what you're doing.
03:50So then the argument becomes, well, we're protecting them down the line for the playoffs.
03:56Listen, here's the thing that I think sucks about yesterday.
04:00The Marlins are kicking ass right now.
04:02Okay.
04:02This cannot be ignored.
04:04They went into Sacramento and they beat the piss out of the A's.
04:09I mean, they hit 12 home runs, team record for a three-run series.
04:14Otto Lopez is an all-star.
04:16Max Meyer is an all-star.
04:18Kyle Stowers is on fire.
04:20Ed Alberto Hernandez is absolutely rocking it right now.
04:24Look, they're playing Joe Mack.
04:26Joe Mack's incredible.
04:28Oh, my goodness.
04:28Dude, this baseball team looks like they got something.
04:33All right.
04:33Sandman back at peak form.
04:37All right.
04:39Shemitah says, wait, when did they move to Sacramento?
04:41That's their holding place until they go to Vegas.
04:43They're stuck in Sacramento, which also makes part of this funny because you have –
04:48I thought I was watching Arena for, like, Banana –
04:52Right.
04:53Banana bananas.
04:54Banana bananas.
04:55Do you know how much you have to love baseball to watch an under 500 A's team in a minor
05:00league park?
05:00All right.
05:01How do you –
05:01Those people love –
05:02You got to watch it sitting in grass.
05:04Yeah.
05:04Those people –
05:04How do you sell tickets to that?
05:06How much are you charging these people?
05:08I don't know.
05:08But do you know how much they –
05:10Do you know how much the people there had to love baseball?
05:13And they think to myself, look at me.
05:14I'm sitting watching the A's in a minor league park.
05:17My team stinks.
05:19The Marlins are in town.
05:20They're good.
05:20But they're kicking the snot out of us.
05:22At least I get to see history.
05:25And the Marlins are like, no, you don't.
05:27No, you don't because we have to protect them.
05:30And I will never understand this, okay?
05:33He's coming off of an IL stint.
05:35That's true.
05:36But it was for a –
05:38As they said, a freak leg injury that he was way ahead of schedule on coming back from.
05:44So, this wasn't an arm issue that he had.
05:48And I just wonder, from my standpoint, he's 23, 24 years old.
05:57At what point are you going to let him stretch things out a little bit?
06:01Because there's pitch count.
06:04That's true.
06:04But you literally couldn't have a less stressful 92 pitches than perfect.
06:11It's perfect.
06:13Not all 92 pitch games are the same.
06:16It's 92 pitches with 21 up, 21 down.
06:21It's a difference if you throw 45 pitches in two innings.
06:25Dude, yes.
06:26Right?
06:26And then now you get to the 56th inning.
06:29And you're looking at, you know, what kind of groove he's in.
06:33Right?
06:35There is no better groove.
06:37There's not a better groove.
06:39He's in the zone.
06:40And you have a chance to do something only 24 guys have ever done.
06:45Ever.
06:47And, by the way, here's another thing that I don't agree with.
06:53You want to save him for the playoffs.
06:54This is a young pitcher, okay, going to be on the big stage.
07:00You have all of the world, because everybody's getting the notifications.
07:03Bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop, bloop.
07:04And you're in Perez, perfect through seven.
07:06Okay.
07:06Everyone's going to, this is a nationally televised or nationally streamed game on Peacock.
07:11Everyone's running to go see, hey, I want to, I want to watch a perfect game.
07:14And they go in there and they see, who's this guy who looks like Duck Dynasty on the mound?
07:22Not only that, they probably came in and said, this guy was perfect?
07:28Yes.
07:29Well, I mean, and you're also very confused because it's like 8-5 all of a sudden.
07:35You're like, what happened?
07:36And he's not, he doesn't look like a Uri Perez.
07:39But you have this chance.
07:41I'm just saying.
07:41Yeah.
07:42You just have this chance to, like, get this unbelievable historic moment.
07:49And you stash it away for a maybe.
07:53And I just don't understand that.
07:54I don't understand.
07:55And I want to do something that I don't think people have been fair about because they're making this a
08:02Marlins thing.
08:02This isn't a Marlins thing.
08:04They're not the first people to do it.
08:05It's a baseball thing.
08:07How many times have you turned on ESPN and saw a collective no-hitter with five pitchers?
08:13This has become a baseball thing of, like, we protect everybody because we're fearful of natural disaster.
08:22They don't have a grasp on it.
08:24They are thieves and liars, the people who tell you they have a hold on arm injuries and how to
08:30manage arms.
08:31They don't.
08:32But I can tell you this.
08:33I can tell you this, Leroy.
08:35We're a week away from the all-star break.
08:38If Uri Perez goes out there and finishes, could you imagine?
08:42It's already great vibes right now for the Marlins.
08:44But could you imagine you have a series where you break your franchise record of home runs and you capped
08:52it off with a perfecto?
08:54Coming back home.
08:55What everybody would have been feeling like on this team.
08:59And it just feels like something squandered, even though you shouldn't feel that way because you're playing awesome baseball right
09:07now.
09:07But I just feel like something was stolen from a Uri.
09:11I don't think that that moment should be taken.
09:13He should be at least allowed to go out for the eighth inning, see how it goes.
09:19Nothing's going to happen disastrous.
09:21Let him go out there.
09:23Let him try work.
09:24And if by some reason it was a stressful, he's at 115 pitches and he got through it, okay, we
09:31can have a talk.
09:33But let's say he goes out there and, like you said, gets it done in six pitches.
09:37He's under 100 going into the ninth.
09:40Like, you're telling me this is somehow a bad thing for this kid to have a chance to go cap
09:45off history?
09:46Like, he's not going to use that with the world watching and have that kind of moment to get through
09:53that.
09:53That's a bad thing.
09:55We're supposed to be told that's a bad thing because in the off chance, he'll what?
09:59Get a chance to go three games in a series in a postseason series?
10:05You're not going to let him do that either.
10:06So, who are you kidding?
10:08Well, here's the deal.
10:12We look at this in baseball and we have a specific position that we can look at in its picture.
10:20But let's not forget, this has been going on in all of sports.
10:26I don't want to hit my football players too much because I want them ready for the regular season and
10:30instead they get hurt in the regular season because they haven't hit.
10:33In basketball, we're going to manage their minutes and then when you get to the point in time where they
10:40have to play, they get these soft tissue injuries.
10:43So, it seems to me that the work early in the season pays dividends at the end, whereas you're trying
10:53to get your players to the end of the season and a lot of times they never make it because
10:58their body's not prepared for it.
11:00So, you never know when this stuff is going to pop up.
11:03It's all sports.
11:05It's not just baseball.
11:07You're sitting here and you're trying to calculate these probabilities of what could or may happen and it's taken away
11:17moments.
11:18Sports is about moments.
11:20You know, when you're sitting there, Eric Spolstra could have taken Bam Adebayo out after three quarters.
11:26All right.
11:27At 61, at 63 points, he has the franchise record, but instead he let his guy go out there and
11:34go have a moment for the ages.
11:37Okay.
11:38That's special.
11:39As a Marlins fan, I remember these moments.
11:43I remember the no hitters.
11:45I remember these signature things.
11:49Those are the things that make you a fan.
11:51And yet, all the time we're being told, like, we're all front office people.
11:55No, no, no, no, no.
11:56For the greater big picture.
11:58Everybody, all 30 teams think that they got a big picture.
12:02Guess what?
12:02You all don't get the big picture.
12:05And sometimes you got to live in the moment.
12:08And if this was a no hitter, okay, nobody gives a rat's ass about those anymore.
12:14Fine.
12:14We'll put it away.
12:15But a perfect game.
12:18Perfect.
12:19One of the rare things that still is universal in the sport of baseball of like, wow, really?
12:26Randy Johnson, you know, Mark Burley, David Wells, like that kind of air.
12:33We're talking like these kind of moments.
12:36Only 24 of them.
12:37Only 20.
12:38And by the way, Dallas Braden was on the broadcast yesterday.
12:40Strangely enough, that was funny.
12:41Oh, didn't he throw one on like Mother's Day?
12:43I don't remember what data was, but he did throw one.
12:45Yeah.
12:45There are some weird names.
12:46It was a holiday.
12:47Like, yeah, it was.
12:48There are some weird names on there as well.
12:50But, but, and then of course, we all remember Armando Galarraga had his ruined by an umpire.
12:54Oh, my goodness.
12:55That's right.
12:56Yeah, now the umpire was worse.
12:57Yeah, the umpire.
12:58Oh, that's worse.
12:58Oh, that's worse.
12:59But he also messed up the chance to add, to back up your point.
13:04Like, that the Marlins just finished a seven and three, a 10-game road trip, seven and
13:08three.
13:09Right?
13:10They're in the, in the middle of a wild card hunt.
13:13So, think about that.
13:15Teams are going to look, viewers are going to watch and say, oh, this Marlins team is
13:20playing very good baseball.
13:22And they just had a pitcher just throw a complete game, perfect game.
13:26That would have been something people talking about today.
13:29Yeah.
13:30Yeah.
13:30Yeah, he took the moment.
13:32It, it, it really stinks.
13:33It stinks.
13:34It's, it, and, and a team that's not only hidden for the wild card, they're, they're
13:38very realistically could win the division.
13:41They really could.
13:42They're four and a half out.
13:42Yes.
13:43This is not old.
13:44Now, they got to beat the Phillies at one point.
13:47But, and the Phillies have just bashed their heads in.
13:49Everybody else, though, if you're not, if you don't have a Philadelphia logo on your
13:53hat, the Marlins have been kicking your ass.
13:56And I just think that stinks yesterday.
13:58I, I, I don't, it, it's, I'm not putting full blame on Clay McCullough because
14:03obviously it's an organizational decision and it's become a cultural thing in
14:08baseball, but it has become part of the problem with baseball is that you guys
14:14used to be the ultimate moment sport and you've sucked it out like vampires for
14:20maybes, possibilities, probabilities, and analytics and whatever.
14:23And instead, this kid had this chance to be etched among the immortals.
14:30And you're just like, nah, maybe for October, dude, we'll save it.
14:34And you know what makes it worse?
14:35He could have missed the next start.
14:37After that is the all-star break.
14:38A hundred percent.
14:39You could have managed it.
14:40You could have managed it.
14:40You could have managed it.
14:42You could have managed it.
14:53He said, you know what, we're going to, we're going to skip, we got all-star break.
14:56We're going to skip his next start.
14:59And everybody was like, yeah, he had a lot of pitches, but to do it now, before you get
15:05a week off.
15:07Yeah.
15:08Didn't love it.
