The Miami Marlins steal a victory Sunday from the New York Yankees 7-6, after two first 'not real loses' in the series.
Transcript
00:00The Marlins, they salvaged the series finale against the Yankees 7-6 yesterday.
00:08Well, how many guys – wait, first of all, I wasn't – I was cooking and I was exhausted.
00:13But I could always tell what's going on during the course of a game by Tobin's text.
00:22So I thought they were getting swept after you sent the Marcy text.
00:30I got to see which one –
00:31It said, hey, Marcy, get used to the jumbo shrimp, right?
00:36What did he do?
00:37Like, I don't understand how the ebbs and flows of a game.
00:42And then to find out today they won?
00:45I texted on Saturday.
00:46Saturday.
00:47Which they lost on Saturday.
00:48I said, Jacob Marcy, get ready to learn Jupiter Hammerheads, buddy.
00:54Like, like, like, like one moment.
00:59No, no, no.
01:00He's been bad all year.
01:01No, no, no.
01:01He's – I think that's honestly – I come out of this weekend – I come out of it kind
01:09of encouraged but also annoyed.
01:11Because I felt like the Marlins should have won that series.
01:13I felt like they should have won that series.
01:15I think there was a little bit of squeaky cheeks because they go from playing in front of three people
01:19to 30,000.
01:20And you're like, whoa, fans.
01:23Like, this is a little overwhelming.
01:24Like, the weekend got off to a really rocky start with Ayori.
01:28He had a really tough start.
01:30And even in that game, the Marlins kind of had a moment where they could have tied it and gotten
01:36through that.
01:36And then the Yankees poured it on afterwards.
01:39So, Friday was a lost cause.
01:40All right, no big deal.
01:42Saturday, they jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
01:46And you're just like, oh, we're in business all of a sudden.
01:49All right, blipping the radar.
01:50But, look, the Yankees, I don't know if you guys know this.
01:52They're good.
01:53They have a good lineup.
01:54They have a good lineup.
01:55They're going to make your pitchers work.
01:58They're going to up the pitch count.
02:00They're going to put them in tough situations.
02:03And that was basically the case on – that was basically the case on Saturday.
02:07Now, Saturday, they come back.
02:10Marlins still have a chance.
02:11They showed guts.
02:12Sonoha tied it up for them.
02:13You're like, all right.
02:15But they weren't able to win it at the end.
02:17But yesterday, you know, I was just frustrated because they start the game off.
02:22And, like, they're doing this – so, yesterday's game was weird
02:25because it was a four-and-a-half-hour rain delay.
02:28It was supposed to start at 1 o'clock.
02:29They didn't start until 5.
02:32So, a four-hour rain delay.
02:33Excuse me.
02:33But either way –
02:34That screws up your pitching.
02:36Your pitcher getting ready.
02:37Well, this is what I thought.
02:39I thought, like, oh, okay.
02:40So, Paddock – they said, oh, Paddock's not going to start.
02:42And I'm like, all right.
02:45But then when I think somebody's not going to start, I think they're done.
02:48They're not going to pitch.
02:49And instead, they go with Fairbanks, their closer.
02:53They use them as the opener.
02:55I was like, oh, here we go.
02:58Raise the light over here.
02:59The opener.
03:01But apparently the whole point – I guess the reasoning for it was – I was a little
03:05lucky.
03:05Because I was also cooking.
03:06I was hosting Easter.
03:07So, I didn't hear the broadcast.
03:09I'm like, what's going on?
03:11But I guess Fairbanks is leaving because he's having a baby.
03:15Oh, you guessed.
03:16I guess he's leaving.
03:17So, they wanted to just get the – Fairbanks thought I'd be here to close.
03:20I could leave.
03:21Skedaddle out of here.
03:22But he's not – so, they're not going to have him for this whole Red Series.
03:25So, they go to him, and I was like, oh, way to go.
03:27But then the thing that annoyed me was that they used him as an opener because I knew it
03:31was going to be a wonky game.
03:32But then, Paddock's warming up.
03:33I'm like, what is this?
03:35What do you mean?
03:36Oh, so, basically, they did – started Fairbanks to get his innings in so he could leave.
03:42Yeah, basically just get him in so he could leave.
03:45And then Paddock comes in.
03:45But that's not – your replies and your remarks were not understanding of that basic fact.
03:52Whatever, dude.
03:53I don't have to.
03:54Whatever.
03:54We were trying to avoid the sweep.
03:56Whatever.
03:57We were trying to avoid the sweep.
03:59I don't understand.
03:59Okay, so Marcos, understand.
04:01He just explained what really happened.
04:04Correct.
04:04Read your text.
04:05The man wanted to go see the birth of his child.
04:07Read your text.
04:08Yeah, you know what?
04:09Read it.
04:10All right, well, first, my first text yesterday was, this Gabriela Hacquez in –
04:16She was everywhere yesterday.
04:18She was like a brother.
04:21Where's a brother who can shoot like her?
04:25She was killing it.
04:26That's why you got to use this footwork.
04:28That game was over, though.
04:29I turned that off after the third quarter.
04:31I'm like, well, this puppy's over.
04:33They've killed South Carolina.
04:34I cannot believe South Carolina lost like that.
04:36I'm not surprised they lost.
04:38Yeah.
04:38I'm surprised they lost like that.
04:41And then I just texted you guys.
04:43Someone explained to me opening a game with your closer because the starter couldn't start,
04:47but he can warm up in the bullpen in the first inning.
04:49That's all.
04:50No, no, no.
04:51You didn't know the story.
04:52Now, you explain this story now.
04:54Mm-hmm.
04:55Okay?
04:55But when that text came yesterday while enjoying some Easter festivities, I'm like, I thought the same thing you thought.
05:04I still don't like it.
05:06He stunk.
05:07He wasn't good.
05:08He opened the game with a dud.
05:10They had to come back because of him.
05:13Well, maybe his mind was elsewhere.
05:15Maybe it wasn't.
05:15They don't have a pitch.
05:17You're taking him out of routine, too.
05:18I didn't like it.
05:19Well, you don't have to call him a rat pass.
05:20The reason why you have him pitch is because you want him gone for like four or five days with
05:25no pitching.
05:27What's the warning thing going to do?
05:29So now this is what's in his mind?
05:31Also some runs.
05:32At the very least, this is crazy.
05:34I don't know.
05:35Like, there's some legitimate thinking behind it, not according to your text.
05:41Look, I know baseball's changed from when I was a wee lad, okay?
05:45There's different ways.
05:46They're talking exit velo.
05:47People still having babies, though.
05:49But you want – yeah, okay.
05:50That's fine.
05:51Then go be with the brother of each other.
05:53We don't get to move the rules around because, oh, we got to get one in on them.
05:59No, don't worry about it.
06:00We'll figure it out.
06:01Now, we almost didn't figure it out.
06:02Bender, you scared the hell out of me yesterday.
06:05Wait a minute.
06:05And then, Frog Boy, after the game, this is where I knew the Marlins won because he flies
06:13in with you, O'Claid McCullough, an apology.
06:17Don't owe an apology.
06:20Which COVID is never going to give because his heels are dug in on this take.
06:26I don't even know whose decision that is.
06:27It might even be Bendix's decision.
06:29I don't even know who's in charge anymore.
06:31I saw David Sampson tweet out yesterday.
06:34He goes, McCullough doesn't even make the lineups.
06:36I was like, what?
06:38I'm like, isn't that all the manager's supposed to do?
06:40What does he do with that?
06:40What is he managing exactly?
06:42I don't know.
06:42But I will say the one thing that bothered me about McCullough this weekend, and it's
06:45just a small quibble or a baseball cap, not a snow cap.
06:49You're looking like Mike McDaniel out there with the snow cap on.
06:52It's cold.
06:52I understand.
06:53It's cold.
06:53But get one of those headband warmers around your ball cap.
06:56Oh, no.
06:57Not look like he's five?
06:59I'm telling you.
07:00The hat with the earmuffs?
07:01I didn't like the look.
07:02Looked like he should have been selling New York Post on the corner.
07:05I've never met an angrier man.
07:06Extra, extra.
07:07Yeah.
07:08It's Easter weekend.
07:10Like, like.
07:10You're talking from the positive?
07:11Right.
07:12Yeah, no.
07:13That's what he does.
07:14So, after those two texts, you would not have any idea how the Marlins did this weekend.
07:20I found out this morning when he actually gave me the truth that they won one out of three.
07:25I feel like my texts were exactly appropriate for the weekend because Jacob Mar-
07:29And this is what I come away with.
07:31I come away a little frustrated because I think they could have had that series.
07:35I think they could have had Saturday's game.
07:36But that's a good thing, though.
07:38They showed tremendous guts.
07:39Even in the game that they were getting smoked, like they had an opportunity.
07:42This Marlins team has a very pesky lineup.
07:45They do not go away.
07:47Two outs.
07:47They don't give a rat's ass.
07:48Like, they're putting things together.
07:50The bullpen was a little squeaky cheeks this weekend.
07:52I'm not going to lie.
07:54Ayori, first two starts, he's been getting touched up.
07:58So, like, I would say the pitching outside of Sandy, a little dicey.
08:03Because bullpen guys, great against the White Sox and the Rockies.
08:07Professional lineup against them.
08:09It was some squeaky cheeks innings.
08:13But still 6-3.
08:15First place fish.
08:16They got a big four-game series coming up against the Reds, who just swept the Rangers this week against
08:20Skip Schumacher.
08:24But they're still doing this, and they really haven't gotten anything from Marcy or Augustine Ramirez.
08:31Like, they haven't gotten squat from those guys.
08:33Which, by the way, Augustine Ramirez, he's getting a little cocky, okay?
08:43This guy has chewed up ABS and spit it out.
08:46He got...
08:47He was like...
08:47He uses all the ABS for the whole team?
08:50He...
08:50They don't let the pitchers do it.
08:52I guess that's a standard rule.
08:53They don't let...
08:53Pitchers are allowed, but pitchers, they don't let them do it.
08:56It's either catcher or that's it for when you're on defense.
09:01But Augustine Ramirez was like 5-for-5 on ABS.
09:04And at one point, he goes and he looks at the dugout.
09:08Because there was a borderline one that he still got right.
09:10And he goes...
09:12Wink!
09:13They go slow-mo wink close-up on him because of how cocky he was.
09:19Then he gave up two pass balls.
09:23And I'm just going to say this.
09:25You can't be the swaggy ABS guy.
09:27That's great.
09:28And then you give up two pass balls and two runs.
09:30You can't.
09:31You just can't do it.
09:33You just can't do it.
09:34You can't do it.
09:36Can you guys imagine what it's like watching a game with Tobin?
09:39I'm just telling you, dude.
09:41He's sitting here.
09:42He goes...
09:42We just had a whole segment of conversations about nothing that actually happened during
09:47these games, but all the side stories.
09:50I did tell you what happened in these games.
09:52What didn't you know?
09:53Graham Pauly had a clutch hit yesterday.
09:54I love Graham Pauly.
09:56Oh, he's great.
09:57I love him.
09:58But I'm telling you, dude.
09:59He's sitting here and he goes...
10:01Boink!
10:02And then he gives up two runs on passed balls?
10:06Even Jeff Nelson was trying to give him one.
10:08He goes, well, you know, he got crossed up there.
10:11He thought that one went long.
10:11Dude, they hit him in the glove.
10:12He's a professional catcher.
10:14Catch the ball!
10:16He got crossed up, Tobin.
10:16Is that an unreasonable thing to think?
10:18You got one job.
10:20And it's in your job.
10:21You scratch me.
10:22Catcher.
10:24I just...
10:24You know, Liam Hicks is awesome.
10:26I mean, he's been incredible.
10:28What's Augustine Ramirez?
10:29He's like, that's his thing is I'm good at the ABS.
10:32Hit some balls.
10:35So, all in all, one out of three is not great.
10:38You never want to lose a series.
10:39But pretty good.
10:40Yankees are really good, obviously.
10:41What are they?
10:41Seven and two?
10:43Probably should have.
10:44Probably could have won that.
10:45Probably could have.
10:45Probably should have won that series.
10:47Up 4-0.
10:48Up 4-0?
10:49Who blows that?
10:52Max Meyer.
10:53They're like, oh, too much.
10:54Don't keep him out there.
10:57Come on, man.
10:58What?
10:59Just enjoy the games.
11:00I am enjoying the game.
11:02Not really.
11:04Dade South says, how's Tobin going to make 162 at this pace?
11:07Exactly!
11:09I was very...
11:10I had to wait forever for that game yesterday.
11:12I think this is the worst, honestly, because basketball is so fast-paced.
11:16He can't get his thoughts together that quickly.
11:18Football?
11:19Oh, we got a lot going on.
11:21Baseball?
11:21Oh, you're going to hear it.
11:22Oh, my goodness.
11:23One pitch.
11:24We got to hear the comment.
11:27Hey, yo.
11:27Why don't you open your eyes?
11:29Yes.
11:31We lost an ump this weekend, too.
11:33One guy, I think he had...
11:34I don't know if he got vertigo or if he got hit in the head, but there was like...
11:37He was woozy.
11:38They took him away.
11:39I was like, whoa.
11:41I mean...
11:42You call that the Terry Rozier.
11:45You knew that he was...
11:46They were onto him?
11:47Uh-huh.
11:49He just got...
11:50Nah, you know what?
11:51You know what's crazy?
11:54Everybody used to talk about the officials and the umps and the calls and whatever.
11:59Now we got an ABS report.
12:02So, when there's statistical...
12:06How was the words of you calling balls and strikes?
12:09The thing that was hilarious about it, the Marlins were so good at ABS.
12:12The Yankees are terrible at ABS.
12:14Every single time, their hitters...
12:15See, their hitters did it most of the time.
12:18And they just were always wrong.
12:20And they blew their ABS, like, in the second inning, every game.
12:24So, question.
12:25And this is the thing that, like, I want the calls to be done right.
12:32I want, you know...
12:33And for the only reason is, I want it to be consistent.
12:36And if an ump gives you the low strike zone and the corners, he's never consistent for both teams.
12:46And that's why I think it becomes an issue.
12:49Because then they say, hey, you gave it to them, give it to us.
12:52So, with this, does it take away from a pitcher being able to work the plate the way that umpire
13:02calls strikes?
13:04No.
13:04Or now we're just standard.
13:05If anything, it doesn't.
13:07Because...
13:07Right, that's what I'm saying.
13:08If you catch any part of the strike zone on the ABS, they call it.
13:12The only thing that it leaves your mind with now is if you blow it, then you're just like, oh,
13:19well.
13:19Could have ABS'd that one, but you blew it back in the second inning.
13:22Right.
13:22It's hard not to think about that.
13:24Right.
13:25But the Marlins are good at it.
13:26I mean, Augustine Rivera's about the only good thing he did this weekend.
13:28He's great at ABS.
13:30But that's the only thing I hate.
13:32Because I like, you know, watching a baseball game and they say, oh, this guy really likes it up in
13:38the zone.
13:39Right?
13:39It's up in the zone, but he'll call that, you know, just below the belt or just, you know, around.
13:45He'll call that a strike.
13:47And the pitchers have to work around that.
13:49That's part of being a pitcher is figuring out how the ump is calling the game.
13:54Now, it's the ump's fault because they've never been consistent with it.
13:58And so, like, yeah, I'm wondering if that part of the game is lost because of ABS.
14:04Because that part is cool, too.
14:06It's just a crazy thing because it's like the umpire, you know, like there's not a, you know, whenever there's
14:13a review on things in sports, it's always like the umpires have to gather.
14:18And you can just tell the umpires hate it so much because they all have to be like, I'm out.
14:24And they all have to look at the screen and see what the robots say.
14:27And then if the umpire's, if the umpire's right, you can tell, like, he's just like inside fist pump, right,
14:34right to the hitter.
14:35But if the catch, he's like, he's like, like, it's just such a game within the game.
14:41I don't know if I like it or not yet, but, you know, it's definitely in our efforts and our
14:46efforts to get it right.
14:49Um, we, we know, but the crazy thing about it is I think the hitters.
14:58They know more about that strike zone than the actual ump because they know what they can and can't hit.
15:04Not necessarily, dude, because if you were to watch the Yankees this weekend, they're terrible.
15:10They think everything they're right all the time and they're not the guy.
15:14It'd be the catchers were much better at it.
15:16But I think the thing that the thing I I'm like, this is where you use it.
15:21They'll use it on like a two, two, you know, or like a two, one, and it makes it two,
15:26two.
15:26And I'm like.
15:28In the third inning, you felt the need like you can't get out of a two, two hole like you
15:31can't get a hit like it needs to be three, one.
15:34So you only get how many ABS you get.
15:37You can keep going if you get it right.
15:39If you get it right, you get it.
15:39But if you but you blow to you, that's it.
15:41That's the game.
15:42Right.
15:43All right.
15:44I wonder if somebody gets I wonder if somebody on your team give you the stink eye if you blow
15:49ABS.
15:49Yes.
15:51Oh, yeah.
15:52Yeah.
15:52You know what I'm saying?
15:54Like, oh, 25 minutes straight to open up on the Marlins.
15:56Huh?
15:57That's radio.
15:57That's cool.
15:58Good.
15:58Good.
