00:01Scott Anderson 97 one if you are just joining us we've dedicated a lot of the show to talking about
00:08the college football playoff expansion did a little Michigan to Michigan State talk some
00:12Lions discussion Dave Burkett took questions he expects Kirby Joseph on the field at some
00:17point this year to give it a go what they get out of them not really not really sure but
00:24we are also going to get back to some Lions stuff as Dave Burkett was writing about a trade
00:29that what he what he envisions Brad Holmes doing we will get to that today at 1245 but
00:35Dan Wetzel came out with a bit of an Armageddon tweet basically saying that Notre Dame has the
00:41best situation in all football they get all their media money they can schedule how they want
00:48and they would with any kind of competitive team are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the playoff
00:54every year and he uses as an example Ohio State Michigan and Penn State if they can be independent
01:01that's the future that the ties to an 18 team Big Ten is distant and winning it carries little
01:09intrinsic or competitive value for the biggest brands those three schools can create a scheduling
01:13agreement that would increase their media revenue revenue two to three times no sharing the money no
01:20forced TV times eight or even nine home games make your own schedule make the playoff in a 2014
01:26playoff world and he called in to further explain as to why a lot of people have reacted to it
01:33and by the way Paul Sarah who's behind the glass today did send us a story from front office sports
01:40college football TV ratings are down double digits through the first month of the season
01:44the viewership was down 11 through September
01:50248-539-9797 the I kind of wonder is there any chance that the collective outrage today and I and
02:02it and
02:02I don't think it's just us okay I mean I'm this this this is the one that bothers me of
02:08all the changes
02:08more than anything else the watering down of the regular season is there any chance that the
02:14collective outrage is going to have the people that run college football go maybe we shouldn't do
02:18this I doubt it I doubt it I love it I'd love to think that there's you know that they'll
02:28they'll
02:28look at this and and they'll do some more polling themselves to figure out rather than just some
02:34sort of Twitter poll that somebody randomly puts out there yeah but I don't know if it's a number
02:39is three out of four despise this four out of five despises or if it's nine out of ten
02:43despises but if they do a little bit of research and find out that nine out of ten college football
02:48fans hate this idea you should listen to the fan base who is the who was it was a Bruce
02:54Feldman
02:54that did the Twitter poll and it was 75 percent of college football fans don't want this uh it was
03:01right McMurphy and right now um they've got he's got 6900 votes on it and it's 74 percent favored 12
03:11teams versus 26 percent favoring I don't know if that's enough to make them reconsider they
03:15probably won't but I mean that's three-fourths uh from an unnamed texter the more you guys talk
03:19about this 2014 playoff the more excited I get watch the world go crazy someday when David beats a
03:25Goliath for a national championship this should definitely spread the wealth of talent as someone
03:30else pointed out it will definitely keep players from selling out sitting out useless bowl games
03:35yeah you're not going to see David beat Goliath for a national championship we kind of just did
03:40didn't we I mean as much as Indiana was David but they're not they're a Goliath now I know but
03:45in
03:46that in the moment of time we're still trying to wrap our brains around a college football world
03:50where Indiana won a national championship but at the expense of like and that's fine like good for
03:57them seriously good for them good for Signetti but that's about as much as close as you're going to get
04:02to date a David even though they are a powerhouse it's still I guess but I mean you have to
04:08look
04:08at it in terms okay you go to a 2014 playoff who are the Davids the Davids are going to
04:13be nine and
04:13three teams right and you're probably going to have two group of six teams now so you got a nine
04:19and
04:20three team or a group of 16 that went 10 and two or 11 and one um you got to
04:26go through a gauntlet to
04:27win a national championship that's the thing that's why I don't think you'll see that happen
04:31and it gets even to be more of a gauntlet when you have 24 teams involved when you had four
04:36teams
04:36you could see a if you your record where you went undefeated you're you know one of these uh
04:42schools from not one of the one of the group of 16 or whatever the other conferences are
04:48you get one of those teams that win it and they go 12 and 0 so they they deserve to
04:53be there maybe
04:53they knocked off a couple of really good teams in their in their non-conference schedule
04:56that's a David versus Goliath situation you don't get those anymore with with with 12 and 24 you just
05:03don't but we are going to see like did the world definitely need to see Missouri State and South
05:11Alabama in the college football playoff no they're probably going to have reserved two spots for those
05:17teams great so now we're going to have crap conferences in in college football now I'm going
05:22to have to say they do you just you just don't pay attention those midweek conference USA games
05:27have really been hitting home and really don't car household uh Stuart and Adrian what's up Stuart
05:33hey um why don't you why don't you go to the situation where in the first first thing independent
05:39in any independent team or whatever they can't qualify for the playoffs and they can't qualify for
05:47the 68 they either have to be a part of a conference and then expand the conferences back to where
05:54you've got
05:54another Midwest conference you got another West Coast conference and so on and then also have it so that
06:01the first three teams in all of the major conferences so say you got say if you got seven or
06:06eight major
06:07conferences those say seven conferences you use those three teams that end up in the top like in football
06:15they end up in the top they're automatic they're automatic qualifiers in the playoffs and then then you
06:21pick from the the uh lower divisions the the next three or so slots you know there's some I don't
06:27love
06:28the idea of automatic bids but if you have and it's hard like you'd have to make the conferences smaller
06:34again but if you want if you want to maintain Stuart it's an interesting idea if the big 10 went
06:41back to
06:41having 12 teams or even 10 and you were to say in this world the top three teams of the
06:47big 10 are
06:48automatic qualifiers and you're playing everybody that would have a 2014 playoff where there would
06:54be intensity to the regular season to be at the top of your conference when you play everybody which
07:01you can't do now because they bloated the damn things is is something that I could get on board with
07:09because instead of what we're going to have where the regular season feels like
07:13pablum those games will matter those games will matter I love the idea of getting back to
07:21a 12 team big 10 conference love that idea getting back to having a pack 12 getting a bunch of
07:29conferences back where they belong I love that idea having conference championship games that matter
07:35because you are playing basically everybody in in the conference and then you know what it's the
07:42winner of the of the conference championship only that gets to advance I have no idea how we put that
07:48toothpaste back in the tube I don't know how you do it either I don't I don't think it's going
07:52to
07:52happen but that would be my proposal to get it to get it done and yes you would have a
07:56problem again
07:57with you know you you could have Michigan and Ohio State playing at the end of the season
08:03and it's not for the big 10 championship game um but it's for their their rivalry and then you see
08:10who's who's involved in the big 10 championship after that I suppose they could play another game
08:13in the big 10 championship if that was how things were to play out but I just like that idea
08:19better
08:19conference champions only it's pretty cut and dry but you can't do that with mega conferences
08:26no disrespect towards Dan but I can't ever see Ohio State and Michigan leaving the big 10 it will not
08:32happen it could I don't see it happening but it could Michigan Ohio State game will matter when
08:39it's number 20 Michigan and number 10 Ohio State Michigan be playing to get in Ohio State would
08:43be playing for better season and not and and to keep Michigan at home that's from Will in Detroit
08:50uh if Michigan Ohio State go independent I'll never put one of those games on my television again I'm not
08:54sure I won't be the only one it'll be time my organization it'll be my it'll be time to organize
09:01excuse me a boycott from the fans Michigan versus Ohio State game won't be worth 150 million people
09:07if people stop watching it's time for the fans say enough is enough the greed has gone too far
09:12I would probably be marching with that person if it came to that point but I don't think it's going
09:20to
09:20Dan Sweet was it could and this is not just you know germane to the big 10 you could look
09:26at this
09:26happening in the SEC where Georgia and Alabama could be saying this you know Texas could be saying this
09:34this discussion has probably been had and and maybe that the people involved with those universities
09:40be like yeah we could we could but we're not going to because we know what effect that would have
09:45on the
09:46the rest of college football and with great power comes great responsibility
09:52uh I like Michigan's chances tomorrow because the only team with a more disastrous offense than
09:57ours is probably Penn State's whoo get to talk about college football actual college football
10:03so not doom and gloom but actually what could happen games Gator brought up yesterday Michigan's
10:08offense ranks 17th in the big 10 only one team is worse it's not Penn State
10:15Michigan State as an MSU fan I expect nothing but pain on every Saturday going forward
10:22uh Doug Michigan's quarterback is not young this will be start number 19 so yeah I mean he's getting
10:29experience and it's great and and all that and I'm not saying that you don't pull the plug if he
10:34plays poorly and you got a better option there um or just a different option uh but you know I'm
10:41we you
10:41bring this up because of Childs Aiden Childs is who I brought up Aiden Childs through start number
10:4719 isn't as good as he is now like what he is doing now with nine touchdowns no picks his
10:53quarterback
10:53rating is 186 it's like 60 points higher than it was a year ago Aiden Childs was benched for the
10:58last
10:58few games last year 248-539-9797 all right straight ahead Dave Burkett writes about what kind of trade he
11:07expects Brad Holmes to make it's interesting we'll get to that at 1246 here on Carson Anderson on 971
11:13you
