00:47Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:49What's up, man?
00:49Welcome to Population TV, South Africa.
00:52Thank you, man.
00:54Good to be here.
00:56It's an honor to have you, my brother.
00:59Hey, man, it's an honor to be here, man, from Atlanta to Africa.
01:02That's a beautiful thing.
01:04Yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
01:05The beauty of technology, man, which is connect via visual.
01:10Sure, indeed.
01:11Where you at?
01:11You in Joburg or you in Cape Town?
01:14No, I'm in Joburg.
01:18I'm specifically in the south side of Johannesburg.
01:22Okay, got you, got you, got you.
01:24Yeah, yeah.
01:25I saw a type of hat.
01:26What up, C-Reality?
01:28Sorry?
01:29I'm just looking at the chat, man, looking at folks jumping in here.
01:34Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:35Welcome, guys.
01:36Shout out, shout out for everyone for joining us, guys.
01:40Let me just wait for the street to come in.
01:43But otherwise, how's your day?
01:47Oh, man, beautiful.
01:49Beautiful.
01:50Can't complain at all, man.
01:52Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:54Word, word, word, word.
01:56So productive.
01:57Doctor, what up, Brazil?
01:59For sure, for sure.
02:00Theo.
02:04What's up?
02:06Represent, man.
02:09Yeah, go ahead and get the bearded bandit in here, man.
02:11Let's do it.
02:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:14I'm just waiting for him.
02:16I don't know if you saw the invite or not.
02:21Okay, but yeah, but it says the same.
02:25But otherwise, what you been up to the whole day?
02:29Man, I have been up to working on new merch for the album.
02:35A new line of some T-shirts, like, new collection of shirts and things we got cooking up.
02:43You know, just dropped a video with punchline for a song called OMG that's on the project.
02:50And decided to release it a little differently.
02:54So didn't just put it up on YouTube, but just shared it with folks who specifically purchased the album.
03:01So trying to do something a little different to kind of share content and reward folks for supporting the movement
03:07and whatnot.
03:08But yeah, that's been about it for today, man.
03:11Just trying to stay productive and take advantage of these 24 hours they've gotten this thing.
03:19Word, word.
03:19That's great, man.
03:21And speaking of punchline, I did an interview with him last week.
03:24Yeah.
03:26Yeah.
03:27What's up?
03:27What's up?
03:29Hey, you finally got in, man.
03:31Yeah, man.
03:31I'm here.
03:32I'm here.
03:33Now we tell you.
03:34For sure.
03:35I'm here.
03:35I'm here.
03:36I'm here.
03:37Welcome.
03:38Welcome to Hip Hop Nation TV, South Africa.
03:41Thank you, sir.
03:42Thank you for having us.
03:43Yeah, man.
03:44It's an honor to have you guys.
03:46Yeah, I was just explaining to Chaos that I did an interview with Punchline.
03:55I think a couple of months ago.
03:57So, yeah, that's the way I saw the OMG track.
04:02Gotcha.
04:03And I was excited.
04:06I was like, no, Punch, I have to write a review for this.
04:10We're very dope.
04:12Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure.
04:14But yeah, big up to him, man.
04:19Big up to him for pushing this.
04:21So, gentlemen, please, please introduce yourselves and, you know, just for anyone that will be watching.
04:30Man, I'll start on this side, man.
04:32Senor Chaos, a.k.a.
04:35Gauss, APL's finest drama, a.k.a.
04:39NBA old boy with the killer crossover.
04:41Yeah, man.
04:45Peace on this side.
04:48Illustrated representing Georgia.
04:49Laptonia.
04:50And, yeah.
04:52That's me.
04:53Illustrated.
04:54Yeah.
04:55I ain't got no fancy names like Chaos.
05:01I'm just me.
05:03Just keep it simple, bro.
05:05Yo, shout out to Biscuit in the building, man.
05:07Shout out to Biscuit.
05:08Dope.
05:09For sure, for sure, for sure.
05:11So, I mean, tell us, man, how did you guys start doing music?
05:17Like just in general or together?
05:22Okay, let's start with individually.
05:28Yeah, you're on the back now.
05:29Yeah.
05:30Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:32So that they know, you know, how far you guys have been, you know,
05:37because you guys are legends.
05:40Hey, thank you, man.
05:42I guess for me, I started, you know, kind of like writing, you know,
05:48raps and playing around with things, you know, way back in middle school.
05:52And then by the time I got to high school, you know, had a homie who had some
05:58equipment.
05:58So, you know, that presented an opportunity to start working on demos and start like
06:02playing around and seeing how your voice sounds on record and all those type of
06:08things.
06:08So I guess the start for me really was like in high school, like actually recording
06:14music and then like turning that into commerce and, you know, creating CDs and
06:21creating things to push out to the world.
06:27Yeah, I was about the same middle school.
06:31Maybe I started writing rhymes.
06:33I would never write a rhyme again, but I started writing rhymes like middle school, high school.
06:42I was performing.
06:44And by the time I got to college, I was performing.
06:47And that's when I really got into production by the time I hit college.
06:50So it was 19, 20, started getting into production.
06:54When I moved to Atlanta, I met a lot of guys that made me quit rhyming forever.
06:58And I just focused on production.
07:02Well, that's amazing.
07:05So mentioning that you guys have studied at a young age, did you guys have people like
07:13guiding you in terms of mentoring?
07:16That's a great question.
07:20No, I didn't.
07:25No, I didn't.
07:27I mean, no, that's a great question.
07:30I think chaos might be a little different, but no, I was winging it.
07:35Yeah, it was not a, I wouldn't say like early on, like specifically, I think it, for me,
07:47it came from watching, you know, like the older heads who were in the city who were kind
07:52of making their movements, like just watching the moves that they were making and asking
07:56questions and kind of, you know, trying to piece it together.
08:00But at the time, for me, it was guys like Mass Influence, which was a crew from Atlanta,
08:05Binkus Rex, you know, another crew that was out in ATL.
08:10Like those were kind of my guides, you know what I'm saying, and my big bros.
08:15I saw what they were doing.
08:16And then I think early on when you're trying to figure out, you know, what your thing is,
08:23what your voice is, what your nuance is that you're going to bring to it, I think early
08:27on, you just start trying to, you just start trying to like copy those moves.
08:30Like, okay, cool, I got to press up the record, then I got to do this, because they did it
08:33like this.
08:34You start doing those things, and then after a while, you kind of figure out what more
08:37works, what more works for you, and then you kind of put your thing in it.
08:42But it's interesting, man, that you asked that question, because it's, I don't know, man,
08:48I think there's a thing in hip-hop, I think we've kind of lost a little bit where, you know,
08:54back in the day, it seemed like there was a lot more, you know, kind of mentorship.
08:57It was a lot more, you know, each one's each one, you know, helping pull the next brother
09:03up and get them jewels and guidance and all those different things to help them on their
09:08path.
09:09And I think at some point, we kind of really lost that, and a lot of us have just kind
09:14of had to figure out a lot of things on our own, you know, good, bad, or indifferent.
09:23I definitely had to figure out a lot of stuff on my own, but, like, to Chaos' point, like,
09:30I try to do that for younger guys, like, the team coming up behind me, if it's Kyle
09:39or Silver Wright, like, anybody that I see that I work with, I kind of, I put myself
09:44in that position, and I try to give them the best input I can give them, even if it's
09:50physical help, just advice, or anything, because I didn't, I didn't have that right
09:55away.
09:57True, true, true, true, true, true.
09:59So, so, how, how, how, how did you guys actually, like, um, meet?
10:04And, and, and, and...
10:05We've been going over this door.
10:07Right.
10:08And, and, you know, what, what, what, what inspired you to, to, to do, um, Kings of Ice
10:141?
10:17I'll let you get the first one, and I'll get the second one.
10:19All right, well, because it came from different levels.
10:24You know what I'm saying?
10:24What I recognized about, you know what I'm saying, and we talked about this before, like,
10:29what I recognized about Chaos before is one thing he could rap, you know what I'm saying,
10:33and I, I noticed that off the bat, but he was focused, you know what I'm saying, and he
10:40would do anything it'd take to make sure that his talents were heard, and I, I was attracted
10:46to that, you know what I'm saying, and that's kind of, if we really break it down, that's
10:51how we met, you know what I'm saying, he saw my talent, I saw his talent, and he literally
10:56called the radio station, like, yo, who's this guy, let me get his number, and that's
11:00how we met, you know what I'm saying, and it was just a really attraction of our work
11:07ethics, you know what I'm saying, he was very focused, he saw that I was focused, and
11:12that's how it came together, and we continued to do the same thing, what I've done is, but
11:22that's pretty much, I think that's our, our link is that we have the same ethical, we want
11:31to always better ourselves, as far as our talent, we want to get better, we just want to get
11:38better, yeah, absolutely, and then, I guess, you know, the second part of that question, man, it
11:44was really, just kind of understanding that, you know, we have, we have something in common
11:50when it comes to music, like, you know, music is, is essentially the vice, and that's kind of where
11:54the, the name King's advice comes from, like, you know, advice is, is a habit, right, it's something
12:00that, that pulls you back into it, it's something you can't give up, it's something that's like
12:04just a true habit, and for us, you know, making beats is, is, is his, and, and writing rhymes
12:10is, is my habit, it's those things that, you know, 10, 15, 20 years, no matter how long
12:16it's been, it's that thing that, that, you know, we keep coming back to, because it's
12:21what we love, it's what we love to do, to express ourselves, and, and to be creative, and
12:26create art, and, and do something that's positive, and kind of sharing this, this expression of
12:30art with, with, with, with the world, and with other people as well, so that's kind
12:35of where, with a whole notion, you know, where the whole notion kind of kicked in, and, and
12:40came from, and then, you know, the, the pandemic kind of helped accelerate just the, the opportunity
12:46to record, everything was closed, nothing was going on, you know, presented the opportunity
12:51for us to, to knock out an album quickly, and, and, you know, two albums now, just in an
12:57efficient manner, man, so, just, you know, hope folks is rocking with the music, man,
13:02I know you've been, uh, been showing us some love, and, and, as long as folks, uh, keep
13:06responding to it positively, we want to keep, uh, creating it.
13:11All right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right, all right, I mean, speaking
13:13of us, do you, do you think, like, um, young upcoming musicians, um, have that?
13:19Um, do you think, like, they've, they've, they've, um, truly found their identity?
13:28Um, mustering.
13:29That's a good question.
13:31What, what could be the problem?
13:35Um, I, I think a lot of people have kind of figured out their voice, and, and what they
13:40want to do, and their identity, I think the, the bigger issue is just, everybody else has
13:46too, right?
13:47So, it's just like, you know, everybody kind of fighting for the same attention.
13:51Yeah.
13:53Yeah.
13:53Yeah, and just being honest, being vulnerable, being able to be confident in that space.
14:03We, it took a minute for us to get here, and now it's like a, I don't sound cliche, but
14:10it's
14:10like a world old machine, like, we, because I understand who I am, I understand what my
14:15voice is, and I understand when I pass him to rock, he's going to catch it, you know what
14:20I'm saying, and those are the things that it took time to understand.
14:24I think a lot of artists are at that phase where they're trying to figure out their voice,
14:28what it means, what are they trying to represent, and really being honest with themselves and
14:33telling their story, and being confident in that, you know what I'm saying?
14:37And I think that's one thing that we figured out, this third album, right?
14:42I think we figured it out within that time frame.
14:45So, that's one of the things that I think we can move forward with, and, you know, it's
14:52a smoother pathway, you know what I'm saying?
14:56Like, it's real easy for us to do because we're just being ourselves, you know what I'm
15:03talking about, you know what I'm saying?
15:05But considering, like, I mean, both of you, maybe, at times, maybe you might have different
15:11views with creating the music, how are you able to chill that?
15:18Nah.
15:19I don't think we're not creating the music.
15:25Nah.
15:26It's another thing.
15:27Like, well, and to piggyback on that, I mean, just to go back on that point, that's, it's
15:34easy.
15:35You know what I'm saying?
15:35Like, I don't, nah, we don't have no difference in creating.
15:41Nah.
15:43Nah.
15:43Nah, creating music is the easiest part, though, to be honest.
15:48It truly is the easiest part.
15:51It's, you know, Illustrate makes amazing, incredible beats.
15:55You know, I do my thing over here with the rhymes and just trying to come up with witty
16:00wordplay and things that catch the listener's ear and keep people listening and take you
16:05on a journey.
16:06And so that's the fun part.
16:07That's the easy part.
16:08Like, we can make music.
16:10We don't have no issues on the creativity, so.
16:13Nah, nah, nah.
16:14It's everything.
16:15That was a great question, but it's funny.
16:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:18I don't mean, like, in terms of, I'm not saying, like, in terms of, like, you know,
16:23maybe it'd be a fight, but, like, I'm just saying, like, you know, maybe the times, like,
16:28you have different views, and then maybe, like, how are you able to merge that, you know?
16:34That's how I meant it.
16:36Oh, he, he, we fight, he handle the phone on me.
16:39I mean, we do that, but music-wise, like, nah, nah, but, like, it, but this is why we
16:48have, we have other people involved in the process, and it makes it easier.
16:53He's, he's, he's strictly for the raps.
16:55I'm strictly here for the beats, but then we have teammates, you know what I'm saying?
17:00We have Mudknot.
17:00Shout out to Mudknot.
17:02We have Four Eyes, you know what I'm saying?
17:04And we have people that kind of can fill in those gaps to where, you know, okay,
17:08they make it make sense, you know what I'm saying?
17:10So even if it's any distortion, we have a team, you know what I'm saying?
17:16So that's what makes it a little easier.
17:20It's, you know, compromise as well, man.
17:23Yeah, yeah.
17:24Like, to give you a perfect example, just, you know, it's a few brothers on here
17:28that I know were kind of involved in this convo, so they could chime in the comments
17:33or whatnot, but, like, when we did Kings of Vice 1, like, we had a song that had,
17:37you know, two different versions, that had two different beats, right?
17:39And it looked like one beat a lot, I liked the other beat a lot.
17:42We were out here trying to figure out, like, which joint is going to go on the album,
17:46and we had to hit the homies.
17:47Like, yo, what y'all think?
17:49You know, what y'all feeling?
17:50And so, yeah, at the end of the day, we ended up compromising.
17:54We got one joint that's on the album.
17:55There's a different version on that song that's actually on a project that Illustrate
17:59does called Sunday Bootlegs.
18:01So, you know, it was just, like, finding a way to find that compromise,
18:04and at the end of the day, giving the people both of those options at the end.
18:10True, true, true, man.
18:11I love that.
18:12So, I mean, now that you guys have done Kings of Vice 2,
18:18what would you see, like, the concept is like compared to the first one?
18:28Continuation, I think, more than anything, and that's why it's name volume 2,
18:33you know, versus being, you know, under a different structure.
18:37Yeah, that was a conversation.
18:40But, yeah, it's a continuation.
18:45Okay.
18:46Yeah, speaking of continuation, what do you think seems to be the problem
18:53with artists not being able to be consistent?
18:58I missed that.
18:59Say that again.
19:00With other artists?
19:02Yeah, like, I mean, like, considering, like, you guys did Kings of Vice 1,
19:07it was dope, and I listened to Kings of Vice 2, it's also dope, right?
19:12But, I mean, there are, like, other artists, when they do first,
19:16and then when it goes to the second, it's not consistent or even better.
19:21But with you guys, what you did was even was dope.
19:26I'm going to be honest, I'll try to mind my own business.
19:32Like, I'm going to be 100% honest.
19:34Like, I really only deal with this guy and who I'm, like, I really try to mind my own business.
19:39What everybody else got going on, shout out to them.
19:43You know what I'm saying?
19:43Do you think, like, maybe there are certain secret formulas that you have that make you...
19:51I mind my own business, yeah.
19:55We're one and two, though.
19:56Just to keep in mind, like, I think one of the things that helped is we didn't take a break.
20:03Like, you know, one thing, one came out, Volume 1 came out November 2020.
20:10And by the time, you know, Volume 1 was released, there was probably, I mean, at least in the next
20:17month,
20:17three, four, you know, new records in the camp.
20:20Yeah, we probably had half of that record done by the time we were shooting the video for the Ultra
20:26Beasts album.
20:28We probably had maybe four to six records.
20:33Yeah.
20:35Yeah, so I think that helped the synergy for sure,
20:38because it wasn't like we made the first one, you know, took a year off,
20:43and then came back and tried to start working on Volume 2.
20:46It was literally just kind of continuing that momentum.
20:50Yeah.
20:51Oh, that's a lot.
20:52That's a lot.
20:54So are you guys, like, now that the Kings of Ice 2 is out,
21:00are you guys planning any events or performances?
21:04And I'm trying to get to South Africa, bro.
21:07Yeah, what are you guys talking about?
21:08When you coming?
21:10Yeah, let's talk that.
21:11When you coming?
21:12When you guys coming?
21:13I just renewed my passport, man.
21:16Get out of here.
21:18Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:20So which city are you coming to?
21:23Nah, nothing planned.
21:24It's nothing on the calendar, man.
21:27But always trying to get around and just, you know, share the music, man.
21:32Brothers love performing.
21:34And always welcome to the opportunity.
21:37And when folks got some coins right, and they ready to reach out
21:40and pay for these flights and things, man,
21:42you know we're going to be there and we're going to have a ball.
21:47For sure, for sure, man.
21:48I'm looking forward to it.
21:49Yeah, I never rocked with Joe Byrd.
21:50Never performed in Africa, man.
21:52Yeah, you should come.
21:54That's on the list.
21:54Yeah, you should because on Saturday I had a session that we did in Soweto.
22:06So, yeah, it's the southwestern townships, kind of close to Johannesburg, so yeah.
22:14And that's on my bucket list.
22:16Johannesburg is on my bucket list.
22:18It's on your bucket list, right?
22:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:20For sure.
22:20For sure.
22:21For sure.
22:21Definitely, man.
22:22Definitely, definitely.
22:24Because there's a lot of hip-hop sessions here, man.
22:26Word.
22:28There's a lot of people that would love your kind of music.
22:32Word.
22:34Yeah, I've heard stories, man, from folks that have been.
22:37So I already know it sounds like a lot of love over there, man.
