00:00Yo, yo, yo, uh, ayo, I'm nice with the stove, ma, a long day, won't you get up out them
00:06clothes, ma, here's your road, ma, you know you got the pink Ralphie joint, but you rather lay up in
00:12my rugby's, whatever's lovely, the kids is with your sister, you know I had to tip her, it's cool though,
00:17we need time to unwind, here's your wine, they were back from Cali, Napa Valley, I grabbed some smoke from
00:23Fleas for you, he said it's loud, the days are rowdy, I know how the rap race is,
00:28have to calm down your blackness and change faces, justice and see, I disagree indeed, now that's agreed, roll the
00:35weed, I rub your back while I scan the pages of my newest read, my dear, my dear, my dear,
00:42my dear, my dear, I'm glad you're here, now let down your hair, smooth it out for a minute, take
00:47a minute, this here's exquisite, there's no limit, that's how we live it, my dear, my dear, my dear, my
00:53dear, my dear, I'm glad you're here, now let down your hair, smooth it out for a minute,
00:58minute take a minute hey what's up guys welcome welcome again hip hop nation tv man yeah we live
01:08man so yeah that's what's up guys um today we got ito that was one of his tracks i was
01:14just playing
01:15right now um hope you guys are ready okay there he is this one um let me just accept him
01:22now
01:35you too yo yo how's it man i'm all right how you do hold on let me fix my let
01:43me fix my camera
01:51peace peace what's the word man i'm all right how are you man how you doing thank you thank
01:55you for having me man thanks man i appreciate it man she let me i appreciate i appreciate the reach
02:02out bro for sure welcome to population tv man south africa thank you thank you thank you
02:11so yeah man just just tell us about yourself my brother um my name's etel that's our acronym for
02:19excellent talent excels lavishly um yeah you know just you know if you want to hear brother that
02:27rappers ass off you found the right guy you know what i mean um fresh out of boston you know
02:34what
02:34i'm saying and yeah man that's what it is you know simple and plain yeah sure so so what inspired
02:43you
02:44to rap and and and what what what what made you to to come up with that um acronym um
02:50what inspired me
02:53my parents actually my parents introduced me to hip-hop i had teenage parents so they were
02:59so they were on it first records i heard was um run dmc and i i i pretty much chose
03:08my career at that
03:09at that point you know i mean um the name came from um my my original name was intelligent but
03:20um i felt
03:22like they were boxing me in uh and i you know they were trying you know i was trying to
03:28box me in as
03:29just like a backpack rapper but i'm more than that you know what i mean from the way that we
03:34grew up and
03:35stuff like that so i um when i uh started me and my man started our own label we um
03:44i came up with
03:45the acronym i wanted to switch the name up so i just wanted to keep it keep it um keep
03:50it fly but keep
03:51it uh advanced like my style is you know so you know that's where that's where it came from
04:01so when would you say like you started um like seriously making music when i uh i've been serious
04:11since like uh since i was about um 17 17 since when i when i started taking it serious so
04:20it's been a
04:20wow it's been a long time yeah yeah did you was it when you started your first single or did
04:28you have an
04:29EP at the time yeah so i was with an independent label out of boston at the time named um
04:36it be like
04:37that entertainment and um i was i was with them for years you know i put out all you know
04:43on my my first
04:44uh single uh i did single uh i did single uh two mixtapes and two two full-length albums with
04:54them
04:55so i put in some pain with them you know yeah plus i saw like you you have a lot
05:01of um music and work
05:03so how would you how long would you say like it takes you like when it comes to writing a
05:08song
05:12um i don't know it's different different things man sometimes i'll lock in and knock it out sometimes
05:18i'll write a verse and um step away and come back uh maybe a couple days later to see um
05:27if i still
05:28want to keep it or not so i don't really don't have no um i really don't try and put
05:32a time on it
05:33sometimes when i lock in i just when i know i'm uh it's moving like that and i lock in
05:38i'll just um i'll just stay i'll just stay there like you know when once it's moving sometimes um
05:47the brain isn't flowing that well i'll step away i try not to force nothing you know so i really
05:53don't
05:53have a real a time you know unless unless it's like a feature unless it's like a feature and someone's
06:00like
06:01you know i'm trying to have this turned in by a certain time then i try to have it you
06:06know then
06:06i try to you know go by that time but other than that nah so like how many how many
06:13artists have
06:14featured you so far how many artists have i featured with no like how many artists have featured you
06:23um um i don't know man i did a bunch i did a bunch i got a i got a
06:27couple i got a joint with my man um
06:30uh mall grits i got a joint with my man uh diogenes that his didn't drop yet um
06:39um i did a couple i've done i can't even say off the top of my head man but
06:45you know any other artists out there you know i'm gonna i work with whoever you know what i mean
06:52oh that's dope man um so like i i saw your your your your first album was it was it
06:57um
06:58i do scriptures right yeah good can you can you please tell us about that what inspired you to
07:06to create that album that album was basically the first um um album on my own label um it you
07:18know
07:18it was like uh a resurgence kinda like you know anybody that knew what the music i was making
07:28before and then i kind of took a break and got my head together this was kind of like now
07:33i'm back
07:34and this is this is what's this is what's going on now and this is what's it's just gonna get
07:39better
07:39from that you know so that's that's really what it was okay so like um who who who produced it
07:49um i had a couple on on on ideal scriptures yeah yeah um i had i had a couple couple
07:56of my guys i had
07:57my man session my man big session um my man john harbinger um i did a couple drinks with these
08:04producers called the track pros um yeah it was a couple dudes a couple dudes oh okay so so like
08:14um
08:15would you say like uh the the entire project like is it stuff that you you personally went through
08:22or is it inspired also from other stories or so as well because like i i was listening to like
08:30um
08:32what was this track they prayed and then it was like um the mash one
08:36like yeah like it was powerful stuff thank you thank you um they prayed is it's all me
08:46they prayed is is all yes everything is personal it's everything i went through um mash mash is kind
08:54of um i kind of it's kind of like um like when i say certain parts in there it's like
09:02exposing my
09:03style like my style is going to be kind of contradicting you know because people are contradicting
09:10right like you can you can think positive but you're doing a bunch of negative things but you're
09:14trying to get to the positive you know what i'm saying so i i you know that's kind of how
09:21i live
09:21and then so i was just explaining that like when in the first like eight bars of mash or whatever
09:27but
09:27um they pray is all me it's all personal stuff that's all those names in the songs is uh are
09:35my
09:35are my mother my grandmother's and that was that was all me yeah yeah please i mean you were mentioning
09:43like your parents um influencing you like that and influencing you in introducing you to the music
09:54because like i could tell like when i was listening to the track i could have that 80s that 80s
10:01kind of
10:02you know what i'm saying mm-hmm yeah yeah yeah definitely um definitely and it was kind of you
10:10know like my mother was the my mother was a hip-hop person it is a hip-hop person but
10:17she wasn't like
10:19into the hardcore stuff like my father my father was like once you got in the car he played whatever
10:24he
10:24was going to play so it was heavy ice cube heavy too short um two pop ghetto boys all of
10:33that you
10:33know i mean that stuff a lot of west coast um so you know because he was living that life
10:40he had
10:40about when he made a family had just exited that life so he was still bumping the music so i
10:45got i got
10:46the best of both worlds but yeah they were the first ones to introduce me to the to the hip
10:50-hop
10:52oh like as you've mentioned like you also you said you also started the the label with your friend
10:58was it the one with brolic music group brolic numbers yeah brolic numbers music group good so
11:04like what would you say were like um your achievements in it and like um some of the challenges that
11:10you
11:10had um with going independent um well um the label i was on before was an independent
11:21label so i just sat with them and he still um jose he's still one of my close friends and
11:29mentors now
11:30but um he was getting everything up off the floor i just sat with him and i watched and i
11:35picked
11:35everything that he was doing and showed me and then i um you know it was a different time back
11:43then
11:43you could move a little different now you know um it's less things it's easier to get to a
11:49a different people from like look at me and you talking you all the way you know across the world
11:54you know what i'm saying so it's easier so i still took the hustle though that he taught me
11:59and i still do some grassroots things um but um so i was already used to moving independent
12:06it you know so it really wasn't it really wasn't nice for me um i think yeah oh that's powerful
12:16um so
12:17like plus i mean like you at the moment now you have like your second album right which is the
12:24million
12:25dollar notebook right yeah yeah can you can you tell us about that and like what was the direction
12:33the direction for that was a was a little more personal um it was in you know i started working
12:40on it and then the whole pandemic happened you know and then um so and then um my lady and
12:51a good
12:52friend of mine was like yo you know we're tired of you know not we're tired but just like you
12:58know you've
12:58been the fly rapper dude forever now you know you got to give people more like yo we know you're
13:03mad
13:03at stuff you know you got these feelings going on you put that you know so it was more it
13:09was a little
13:09more personal with um um million dollar notebook because i wanted it to feel like i wanted it my
13:16inspiration from that was um prodigies h and ic and scarface uh the diary i wanted to feel like that
13:25like a blend of that because because um if i remember um that the songs there was it um the
13:34one
13:35right and also um it was a beautiful morning or something yeah so like how um how was the response
13:46like um from the people like when you when you gave those kind of songs yo the response is big
13:53the one
13:54was the first single and the response was already uh was great you know i mean the response was great
14:03and then um when the whole project came out the response was definitely it was it was it was more
14:10than i expected actually um which i love you know what i mean i was a little i was a
14:18little nervous
14:18because like i said from the beginning to the end how it started and everything it's a little
14:25different because you know everybody i think is used to me like when they hear a project comes on
14:30it's just like you know the usual a thousand bars no hook or something like that and this went totally
14:37left field so i was a little worried but the response was overwhelming
14:46yeah i mean i mean like as you said like you
14:50um you're a person that's very versatile that comes to writing um like how are you how are you able
14:58to do
14:59that and then um i just i just i just listen i listen to what i'm sorry what'd you say
15:07yeah i was
15:08saying like how are you able to do that and like and not be able to feel pressured like to
15:13to remain
15:15constant isn't like just um doing that style of rap well you know i um i still try to keep
15:24it hip-hop
15:25you know what i'm saying um i'm not gonna make it corny you know so um you know so and
15:34then i think that
15:37sometimes you gotta like as like underground hip-hop dudes and all that like yo you know underground
15:43hip-hop dudes like girls yo so it's all right to make a girl song you know what i'm saying
15:47like
15:48you know what i'm saying like i don't know you know but if it's fire like it wasn't it's not
15:54corny
15:54you know what i mean so i'm gonna i'm gonna do it you know what i mean um but you
15:59know so yeah
16:00i you know i listen to all types of music again outside of hip-hop so yeah i i'm able
16:08to do that
16:09when i when the joint comes across and i know it's gonna i know my audience is not gonna be
16:14like yo
16:15die this is corny i'm gonna do it you know what i'm saying yeah so like i mean like as
16:21you've
16:21mentioned before like your mom your parents supporting you and your girl also supporting you
16:27like how important do you think it is like to to to to to be getting uh the support as
16:34musicians
16:34what do you think can be done for i think i think i think it helps i think it helps
16:40a lot because
16:41when you're in that position um of like chasing your dreams it's a dark it's a dark place bro you
16:52know it could it's hard and it's a dark place and you need it's good to have that you know
16:58i'm saying
16:58it's good that someone just believes or understands or they just know you know i mean like yo
17:05so it's more than just even just being a musician like if you're an entrepreneur like if you're
17:10you you selling clothes or you selling you know what i'm saying like it's good to have that those
17:16people you know i'm saying that see the vision there's not a lot of people see the vision
17:23so like on on on your on your album like on this album who did you feature
17:29um on on on million dollar notebook i got on there i got uh madam cruise on there um that
17:38might be yeah
17:38who else is wrong um yeah yeah is it just madam cruise yeah i think it's just madam cruise
17:50um i got a few different producers you know what i mean but yeah that's it i um i got
17:58another
17:58two projects coming it's going to be more featured base um
18:03um it's going to be a lot of you know group group tracks a lot of bar dudes that i
18:09worked with you
18:10know what i'm saying so it's and that's gone i got one coming up with my main bogey that's unnamed
18:16yet and then after that it's going to be the the appendix so it's like the million dollar notebook
18:21and the appendix there's going to be a lot of a lot of my guys on there a lot of
18:25bar splitters on there
18:26i'm gonna reach out to and get with so like is it is it artists that are under your label
18:32or outside
18:33of your leave now outside of the label you know outside of the label but um yeah ma'am we're
18:41looking
18:41for you know looking for bar heavy you know who wants to wants to get down right now you know

18:49saying but um yeah a lot of dudes that i've worked with and outside the label
