01:39Hey Sussu
01:41Nice to see you joining
01:42Thanks for having me
01:44For sure
01:44On Hip Hop Nation TV
01:46Yeah man it's my pleasure
01:49Yeah
01:50Otherwise yeah man
01:52Please just introduce yourself
01:54Who's Ashley
01:55You know
01:56Sure
01:58So
01:59I am Ashley Lafoy
02:02That's my government name
02:04And my performance name is Lex Lafoy
02:09For those who have been following the journey
02:12They would know that from 2005 to 2012
02:17I performed as Lexicon
02:19And then in 2013
02:22I rebranded as Lex Lafoy
02:25But same person
02:28That's amazing
02:29That's amazing
02:30That's amazing for sure
02:31So what got you into Hip Hop?
02:35Because that's what you used to sing
02:39I
02:40Okay so
02:41As a kid
02:43The moment I became literate
02:45I started writing poetry
02:48Songs
02:49Short stories
02:52And so
02:53In that way I feel that
02:55Writing has always been my gift
02:57You know
02:58When I was in school
03:00I formed a singing group
03:04And I'd be the one
03:05Like making sure
03:07We performed at your school assemblies
03:10Your fashion shows
03:11Things like that
03:14The cute stuff
03:15Shout out
03:16808 for joining as well
03:18Yeah
03:19So I started writing as a kid
03:22I think it was
03:23Around grade 9
03:26Grade 10
03:28Specifically grade 10
03:29Where I fell in love with Hip Hop
03:31You know
03:31Like the likes of your
03:33Lauryn Hill
03:35Miseducation
03:36The likes of your
03:37Blueprint 1
03:38By Jega
03:39I then got introduced
03:41The conscious side of Hip Hop
03:45Like your MF Dooms
03:46Your
03:48Your company flows
03:49Your Talib Quays
03:51And as a lover of
03:53You're a female version of me
03:58So yeah
03:59I just
03:59I fell in love
04:00With Hip Hop
04:01It was
04:0220
04:02It was 2002
04:04When I fell in love
04:05With Hip Hop
04:06And I've just been
04:08Going at it
04:09Ever since
04:09I mean
04:09I entered
04:11As a rapper
04:13In the Durban
04:14Industry
04:16In 2004
04:17When I was in
04:18Matric
04:18And I've just been
04:20Growing
04:20Ever since
04:22For sure
04:23For sure
04:23For sure
04:24Yeah
04:24So how did you
04:27Join
04:28Blink Free
04:30And then
04:31About Hip Hop
04:32And Poetry Africa
04:34Well
04:36At the time
04:37Blink Free
04:40Which was
04:41First called
04:42Life Check
04:43Was organized
04:45By an OG
04:46A pioneer
04:47A veteran
04:48By the name
04:49Of Ewok
04:50Who's also
04:51A graffiti artist
04:52And Ewok
04:53Used to
04:54Create
04:55These events
04:56These monthly events
04:57At the Bat Center
04:59At the same time
05:00There were the
05:01Inga Bat Hip Hop
05:02Sessions
05:02Which was every
05:03Thursday evening
05:04And at the time
05:07Those were the
05:08Spaces for Hip Hop
05:09Heads
05:10You know
05:11Life Check
05:11Would bring
05:12All the elements
05:13Together
05:13Your graffiti
05:14Artists
05:15Your beatboxes
05:16Your
05:16Your MCs
05:18Your
05:19Yeah
05:20Everybody
05:21So
05:22Your B-boys
05:24So
05:24So that was
05:25A monthly gathering
05:26And it was just
05:27A beautiful space
05:29For Hip Hop
05:30Head
05:30And creatives
05:31To play
05:32You know
05:34Thank you so much
05:35808
05:35I see you
05:36Hey
05:36Saints
05:37Yeah
05:38It was just
05:39A space
05:40For us
05:40To play
05:40You know
05:41Because a lot
05:41Of us
05:42Especially in
05:43In Derby
05:43Growing up
05:44In Derby
05:44You feel like
05:46An outsider
05:47As a creative
05:48You feel
05:49Sidelined
05:50There's not much
05:51Understanding
05:52Around the creative
05:53Journey
05:53And the creative
05:54Person
05:55So
05:56Just having a space
05:58Where there were
05:59Other creatives
06:00Other Hip Hop
06:00Head
06:01It just
06:01It just
06:02Warmed your soul
06:03To know
06:04It's by me
06:05There's more
06:06People like me
06:07In the world
06:08Yeah
06:10For sure
06:11For sure
06:11For sure
06:11Plus
06:12I mean
06:12The way
06:13You're so
06:14Creative
06:14You even
06:14Created
06:15Your own
06:15Style
06:15Bass
06:16Rap
06:16What was
06:18That about
06:18Honey
06:18Bass
06:22Thank you
06:23Yeah
06:23So Honey
06:24Bass
06:25Is
06:25The sound
06:27That
06:28I
06:29I
06:30I
06:31Created
06:32It's also
06:32The name
06:33Of my debut
06:33Album
06:34That dropped
06:34In 2017
06:35And
06:36It's a fusion
06:38You know
06:39Because I love
06:39Dominant
06:40Bass
06:41Sounds
06:42In the
06:43Music
06:44And I also
06:45Later found
06:46Out
06:46Guti
06:47Bass
06:48Itself
06:49Is very
06:50Cleansing
06:50For our
06:51Roots
06:51Chakra
06:52You know
06:53Which is
06:53Where
06:53We have
06:54Our sense
06:55Of grounding
06:56Our sense
06:57Of pro
06:58Let me say
06:59Grounding
07:00More than
07:01Procreation
07:01But grounding
07:02Safety
07:04Things like
07:05That
07:05So
07:06Yeah
07:07Honey
07:07Bass
07:08That's the
07:08Vibe
07:10It's amazing
07:11It's a very
07:13Interesting
07:13Debut
07:14I was listening
07:14To it
07:16So
07:17So
07:17How was
07:17I mean
07:18At that
07:19Time
07:20I think
07:21Was it
07:222012
07:22When you
07:23Started
07:23Pursuing
07:24A rep
07:24Your
07:25Like
07:25Your
07:25Career
07:26In
07:26Joburg
07:27Yeah
07:28I
07:28Relocated
07:29In
07:292012
07:30After
07:31Completing
07:32My
07:32Degree
07:33At
07:33UK
07:33ZN
07:34And
07:34Then
07:35I
07:35Went
07:35To
07:35Joburg
07:36Yeah
07:38How was
07:38Like
07:39How was
07:39That
07:39Experience
07:40Like
07:40You know
07:40Being in
07:42The new
07:42Environment
07:43And
07:43You know
07:44You're
07:44Also
07:44Trying
07:45To
07:45Push
07:45Your
07:46Career
07:47In
07:47A
07:48Very
07:48Competitive
07:49Genre
07:49In
07:50Your
07:51Neity
07:51It
07:52Was
07:53Amazing
07:53It
07:54Was
07:54It
07:54Was
07:55Really
07:55Exciting
07:56Because
07:56I
07:57Flourished
07:58In
07:58New
07:59Spaces
08:00And
08:01Because
08:01I
08:01Been
08:02Tiptoeing
08:03I
08:03Been
08:03Coming
08:04Into
08:04Joburg
08:05Going
08:05Back
08:05Home
08:06Like
08:06Before
08:06Making
08:07The
08:07I
08:08Kind
08:08Of
08:08Had
08:08A
08:09Few
08:09People
08:09That
08:10Side
08:10That
08:10I
08:11Could
08:11Call
08:12Fam
08:12You
08:12Know
08:13Like
08:13People
08:13Who
08:14I
08:14Knew
08:14I
08:15Could
08:15Call
08:16On
08:16If
08:16I
08:16Needed
08:17Something
08:18So
08:18In
08:19That
08:19Regard
08:20I
08:20Yeah
08:21The
08:21Move
08:21To
08:22Joburg
08:22Was
08:22Amazing
08:24The
08:25Challenge
08:26Though
08:26For
08:26Me
08:27Was
08:27You
08:28I
08:28Spent
08:28Seven
08:29Years
08:29There
08:29In
08:29Total
08:31Hey
08:31Elroy
08:32What's
08:32Up
08:33What's
08:33Up
08:33What's
08:33Up
08:35So
08:35The
08:36Challenge
08:36I
08:37Think
08:37In
08:38My
08:38Journey
08:38You
08:39Know
08:39Moving
08:39To
08:40Joburg
08:40And
08:40Things
08:40Like
08:41That
08:41While
08:41There
08:41Was
08:42Super
08:42Amazing
08:43Positives
08:45Like
08:46Growing
08:47Expanding
08:48My
08:48Network
08:48New
08:50Meeting
08:50New
08:50People
08:51Doing
08:51New
08:52Things
08:52Some
08:53Of
08:53The
08:53Challenges
08:54Were
08:54Also
08:54As
08:55You
08:55Say
08:55I
08:55I'm
08:55A
08:55Woman
08:55In
08:56Hip
08:56Hop
08:56And
08:57Not
08:57Having
08:57Anyone
08:58On
08:59My
08:59Side
09:00Per
09:00Say
09:00You
09:00Know
09:01There
09:01Were
09:01People
09:01Who
09:02Entered
09:02And
09:04Worked
09:04Alongside
09:05Me
09:05For
09:05A
09:05Season
09:06But
09:06I
09:07Never
09:07Really
09:07Had
09:08That
09:08You
09:08Know
09:09Like
09:09Beyonce
09:09Had
09:09A
09:09Dad
09:10You
09:10Know
09:11So
09:11I
09:12Kind
09:12Of
09:12Had
09:12To
09:12Learn
09:13The
09:13Hard
09:13Way
09:14In
09:15Terms
09:16Of
09:16The
09:17Bullshit
09:18And
09:19In
09:19Terms
09:19Of
09:20Like
09:20Having
09:21To
09:21Pick
09:21Up
09:27Not
09:27For
09:28Me
09:28And
09:28Of
09:28Course
09:28I
09:28Got
09:28Burns
09:29A
09:29Lot
09:29Of
09:29Times
09:29Along
09:30The
09:30Way
09:30But
09:31We
09:31Come
09:31Out
09:31Wiser
09:32So
09:32Yeah
09:34Word
09:34Word
09:34Word
09:35Word
09:35Word
09:35Word
09:35So
09:36So
09:36What
09:37Would
09:37Be
09:37Your
09:37Advice
09:38To
09:38To
09:38Many
09:39Young
09:39Girls
09:40You
09:40Know
09:42That
09:42Are
09:43Pursuing
09:44The
09:44Same
09:45Line
09:45That
09:45You
09:45Into
09:47I
09:47Say
09:48Have
09:49Representation
09:51And
09:51Let
09:52The
09:52Represent
09:52That
09:53You
09:53Have
09:54Be
09:55Someone
09:55You
09:56Know
09:56Someone
09:57You
09:59Who
10:00You
10:01Can
10:01Definitely
10:02Say
10:02Has
10:03Your
10:03Best
10:04Interest
10:04At
10:04Heart
10:04I
10:05Mean
10:05If
10:05You
10:05Look
10:05At
10:06Some
10:06Of
10:06These
10:06Labels
10:07Yo
10:08Like
10:09Sometimes
10:10All
10:10They
10:10Care
10:10About
10:11Is
10:11The
10:11Outcome
10:12And
10:12The
10:13Music
10:13And
10:14The
10:14Numbers
10:15But
10:15Inside
10:16The
10:16Artist
10:17Is
10:17Dying
10:17Like
10:18They
10:18Have
10:18Drug
10:19Issues
10:20They
10:20Don't
10:20Have
10:21They
10:21Homeless
10:22You
10:22Know
10:22We
10:22Seen
10:23That
10:23In
10:23Hip
10:23Hop
10:23In
10:24Music
10:24In
10:24Essay
10:25So
10:25Many
10:25Times
10:26Where
10:26On
10:27The
10:27Cover
10:28Things
10:28Look
10:29Good
10:29You
10:29Know
10:29The
10:29Photo
10:30Shots
10:30Are
10:30There
10:30You
10:31Seen
10:31At
10:31The
10:31Events
10:32You
10:32Know
10:33You
10:33Seen
10:34With
10:34One
10:34Band
10:34You
10:35Know
10:35So
10:35On
10:35The
10:35Cover
10:36Things
10:36Look
10:36Good
10:37And
10:37But
10:37One
10:38Of
10:38The
10:38Things
10:38That
10:38Really
10:38Hit
10:39Me
10:39When
10:39I
10:39Was
10:39Staying
10:40In
10:40Job

17:39Music
17:40That
17:40Just
17:40Allows
17:41You
17:41To
17:41Express
17:43Your
17:43Emotion
17:44Or
17:44To
17:44Just
17:44Feel
17:45Right
17:46Because
17:47We
17:47Need
17:48More
17:48Empathy
17:48In
17:49The
17:49World
17:49So
17:49It
17:50Makes
17:50Sense
17:50That
17:50The
17:50Earth
17:51You
17:52Know
17:53Needs

17:53Empathy
17:54The
17:54Music
17:54Needs
17:55More
17:55Empathy
17:55So
17:56At
17:57That
17:57Point
17:57I
17:58Was
17:58Craving
17:58Something
17:59That
17:59Had
17:59Feeling
18:00As
18:01I

22:12Flex
22:12And
22:12Sushi
22:13Dip
22:13You
22:13Know
22:13Because
22:14If
22:14You
22:14Look
22:15At
22:15How
22:15I've
22:15Grown
22:16And
22:16Evolved
22:16And
22:17If
22:17You
22:17Look
22:17At
22:17How I
22:47with iFani is we have similar personalities in that we're both intellectuals but we're creatives
22:55if that makes sense there aren't a lot of people that have that that balance
23:01um yeah there aren't a lot of artists in that i know that have the the creative and intellectual
23:11balance so i feel like that also helps a lot because for me i'm very scholastic you know
23:17so for example how i understand things i finally would take a flip chart literally a flip chart and
23:23be like okay you'll write they'll be like you see this this this this this that's why you get this
23:31percentage and this is this and that's why they get this with and i'll be like oh okay you know
23:36because i'm just that person and it's really hard to find intellectuals um or people that approach
23:44creativity from like an intellectual balance or or framework so i i really enjoyed uh collaborating
23:51with him it was a huge blessing with him with my lady uh with sakagile with alroy it was just
23:58an
23:58amazing time yeah good good so so i saw currently you're also doing some some organization for
24:07sydenham yes um explain that to us what that's about so i i founded uh peace for which is an
24:22organization uh peaceful uh kicked off with peace for sydenham which was the first um activation on the
24:3129th of october and yo dude like i i was okay in in durban there's a community that's called sydenham
24:40and it's been highly negatively affected by gang violence uh shootings by by related crimes you know
24:49to to gang wars and all these things and it just it just like dawned on my heart would see
24:57i should do
24:58something you know because when when i worked i mean i've worked as i say in the npl sector for
25:05a long
25:05time and from 2016 i've been parallel working as a creative and within communities and i'd always
25:16like one day it occurred to me you know that like okay me as a mixed race person um i'm
25:24i'm always
25:25working in communities where i don't see much representation of mixed race people you know
25:32and then it would make me like question like hey who's taking care of the mixed race community
25:37you know if i'm out there and and here's the thing though
25:43the the racial thing itself is such a mind fuck because i i'm not even huge on the black and
25:51colored
25:51mix even being divided i don't like that one bit but like being back in durban it's so segregated
25:58fam like i've i've seen that each take care of their own and like i just saw a huge need
26:04for the
26:05mixed race communities to have someone on their side to do something dope so i basically just found
26:11it peaceful and yeah the the event is aimed towards creating you know it was basically a daytime festival
26:19but um with a good cause to create more awareness of social cohesion of peace of unity of hope
26:27because when we were speaking to the people in the community they were saying things like
26:32they didn't even feel safe to come out you know of their houses because of like the one mother said
26:37she didn't feel safe to let her kid play outside because of the shooting and that's no way for
26:43a human being to live you know what i'm saying yes blessings conscious diego so it was just it was
26:51on
26:51my heart to do something for the community of sydney and i was really blessed to to just attract an
26:57amazing team like an amazing amazing team uh yo i mean when i look back we had it was out
27:04my first
27:05peaceful events that i'm founder and project manager for working alongside an amazing team
27:10um but it was the first event of of its kind and we had like about about a thousand people
27:18come through
27:18on the day we had a team of volunteers of artists of of managers of about 150 it was it
27:26was my first
27:27major event you know in terms of it required permits it required uh um like yo a lot of a
27:35lot of
27:35things went into it so now i can say i know how to throw a festival
27:39but um but yeah man the plan is to do more peaceful events uh going into 2023 to do more
27:48events in the
27:49mixed race communities i want to take care of the mixed race communities first because they say
27:53charity starts at home you know um but of course it can go as far as it can go shout
27:59out to mark
28:00uh kaufman for joining hey yeah so peaceful is my baby it's it's it's um it's a positive
28:09social community event and i just you know like it hit me as a success when i looked around and
28:21i saw
28:22i saw kids playing i saw children laughing i saw grandparents enjoying i saw you know youth i saw
28:33people of all ages at this event you know and and it made me remember that that's what we need
28:41we need
28:42spaces that are also family friendly you know because what ends up happening to us as human beings
28:49is we develop these split personalities you know we go to spaces where kids are not allowed we go to
28:56spaces where we we start behaving in ways not to say you must stay the same all the time i
29:02mean i still
29:03well out i still love dancing i still you know i love freedom freedom of expression but like especially in
29:10the in in our black communities we don't have so many family friendly spaces where we can enjoy
29:16you know and and and it's not cool because the young mother who doesn't have a babysitter like that
29:23means she can't go out and enjoy who maybe is lonesome living in her house by herself that means she
29:31can't come you know so i i feel like the peaceful events are super family friendly they are very
29:39intentional and they are highly inspired by movements like your carers ones uh uh stop the violence
29:47campaign in 1989 highly inspired by your email xy uh heal the hood project that that kicked off in what
29:551999 i think um but but me as a child of hip-hop i'm inspired because i know that hip
30:05-hop is more than a
30:06genre you know i know that hip-hop is a culture i know that it's a mindset and a lifestyle
30:11and so
30:12i love to him and so for me it's just such a joy and a privilege to be able to
30:18to take the cultural
30:20elements of hip-hop and make it something make because you know make it something that is positive
30:25for the community make it something that is wholesome you know because as as much as we love
30:32party hip-hop uh coming from the era of the conscious hip-hop we know that it taught us things
30:38we know that it highlighted uh social issues that we were not aware of and it put it into words
30:45you know so i think for me that's important as a hip-hop head in 2022 going into 2023
30:522023 is just like reminding us that hip-hop is more than a genre hip-hop is it's a conscious
30:59tool
30:59also it's it's a it's a mindset also it's it's a form of rebellion it's it's the mothership you know
31:06yes true true true true true true true yeah so so so i mean um also i mean also other
31:15places that
31:16that that that's that have um the same experiences right so what would how how could one be able to
31:24contact you and say yo um how about we collaborate and then you know um and see how how how
31:31we can
31:32solve this because also there's that many other artists you know um who who who come from those
31:38backgrounds or those areas and then maybe they feel like yo um i don't know where to start or how
31:45to
31:45go apart you know because um yeah um it's it's very rare to see to see artists give back to
31:52the
31:52hood you know what i'm saying and sometimes we charge them but maybe it's because they don't know
31:57where to begin or there's just so many challenges yeah yeah so so sorry sorry it's a disturbing there
32:07no it's cool it's cool so so so yeah i just wanted to know how how can maybe um we
32:13collaborate you
32:14know and and and and make this something that could be solved hopefully maybe um even people
32:21in high places could could could could reach out you know thank you for that question oh so much love

32:37uh cultural producers program cohorts with me this year we graduated together
32:46yeah um you know speaking about taking it to high places i want to say that since i've accepted
32:54because i feel like these things are callings right i feel like since i've accepted this call to
33:01to do peaceful um so many other as you're saying higher doors have opened you know there was the
33:09basa program um which happened before peaceful earlier this year where i was one of 25 from the
33:16country um darian's one of them the other amazing people that are part of that uh also uh kabi so
33:23who
33:23who won you know the best poets of the world he was part of that as well um i mean
33:30doors have been
33:32opening them because i realized there is a desire people want to do something positive for their
33:38communities sometimes they just don't know who to back or who to stand behind you know um a few weeks
33:46after the peaceful events i was invited to a woman in peace building workshop which was organized by
33:52united nations women um institutes of africology um institute of justice and reconciliation
34:02and then about two weeks back and as it all feels like one big time loop but like not so
34:10long ago
34:10i was invited to to have a conversation with in national treasury and and city of johannesburg and
34:18and the founder of national arts festival and these are just huge blessings and like you know god is
34:25just doing the most because if you think about it and if you're a person of faith like god's will
34:31is just to heal the people bruh so at the end of the day it's like who's willing to stand
34:36up
34:37and and take this mission on and it's so hard it's so hard but once once you align yourself with
34:45that
34:45you'll never believe how doors just opened them like i've been doing events from high school and
34:51i've never seen an event come together so with so much ease like this like the peaceful event if i
34:59tell
34:59you i started that event on zero budget they were like oh how are you gonna do this how i'm
35:04like i
35:04we're gonna do it i don't know how we're gonna do it that's how i do all my projects by
35:09the way
35:09i started the vision i don't have the money the money will come you know and and and peaceful at
35:16the end of it we managed to cover over 75 000 rand costs back and we started on zero budget
35:24you know so so what i'm saying is with like when you have the desire to do something higher vibrational
35:30when you have the desire to do something that is aligned with divine will things will open like
35:36you will never believe so that's what i'm going through now at the moment which is also difficult
35:41to be honest fam because like as an artist we have our own mash-up of mental health issues you
35:49know
35:51you know we have anxiety we have depression we have we're just a cocktail you know because of the
36:02way we put ourselves out there we're so vulnerable we put our feelings out there our pain is public our
36:08joy is public you know our relationships are public our breakups are public you know so so it's it's not
36:17easy having to balance my inner world with the outer world which is what i need to do and what
36:23i'm called to do so i'm really just learning how to manage myself i'm learning how to manage my energy
36:29i'm learning how to manage my wellness because we can't do things if we're not operating from a place
36:35of wellness you know sometimes when you go out there and you're not well you end up making a bigger
36:39mess
36:40you know so it's i guess it's just a balancing game if people want to collaborate they can just
36:47um on peace force specifically they can just email peace for durban at gmail.com um yeah peace the digit
36:56for durban at gmail.com as as you mentioned these are issues that are faced by large numbers of
37:04communities around south africa it's not an isolated thing you know there are a lot of our communities
37:10pay the circle there are a lot of that are affected by these social ills and um i guess yeah
37:21i'm just i've
37:23always been as as as party like as commercial as flamboyant as i can be in my heart i've always
37:36been you know someone who cares for the people so it's like how do i i'm just learning how to
37:43balance
37:44all of that because as humans we have selfish desires like i want to go on a vacation you know
37:49and i want to go to and i also want to go to the mountain you know but then it's
37:59like ah i also have
38:00this work to do and and sometimes yes you know so it's like just having to find this balance between
38:09the human and and the vessel i guess i mean i'll put your mom again hey and my daughter's trying
38:18to
38:18cost her because she ordered food and i'm by the door yeah yeah it's a lot
38:26that's dope that's dope that's dope that's dope so i mean your your current album which is new old
38:33daughter yeah um that came out last year right yes on the first of september oh my god that's amazing
38:42man
38:42so so so so tell us about that you know um are you are you planning on doing any events
38:50performances you
38:51know
38:51yeah so um music wise uh about two months ago i dropped a dawn single with these people called
39:03these two guys called bass odyssey that was released by a canadian label it is doing so so dope shout
39:09out to
39:10the bass odyssey from durban um last week i just uh i'm featured on on the last track of release
39:18essays
39:18um collab album with 808 that's called african drill so i'm featured on a song there called
39:27and um yeah there's a single called pretty boys that's coming out next week friday with a video as well
39:35and my my song nom thanda so featuring the maskandi artist uh uh that video there's a video coming
39:44out for that um i'm thinking of dropping it in in jan like mid-jan in time for february for
39:49valentine
39:50wait wait the nom thanda is a check yeah oh yeah that's that's one of my favorite from that from
39:56that
39:56album and uh uh seven magic yeah yeah that those those are those ones are one of my favorite
40:04yo dude in on thunder so i it it's magical i i don't i don't want to even
40:12yeah because it's because it's still i was like oh
40:15i know in the song i mean like yeah yeah yeah because because it's because it's so real
40:24yeah yeah yo dude nom thanda is for people who don't know the song right it's it's a it's a
40:33song
40:33but it's a prayer for love yeah and yo and and the chorus which i also wrote by the way
40:40even though
40:41the lady sings i wrote it yay so um it's like shout out to the poor like you wrote for
40:48so the chorus is like
40:59you know it's like this it's like this
41:07so it's basically like it's like do you want this love you know like and then at the end
41:14yo she flipped she's bad uh uh uh uh buselabi who is a maskandi legend
41:20yeah at the end in her freestyle she she's like
41:26she's like affirming you know this human she's like affirming she's like
41:40she's like affirming you know and so that's a very powerful song it was definitely born of
41:46very very strong um sense and desire and and just pure love you know like because sometimes when you
41:54think of love these days you just think of lust but like it's a prayer for love so it's taking
41:59it
41:59back to like the core of like love as as a nurturer love as like wholesome you know yeah yeah
42:08yeah but
42:09maybe the problem is that um then the environment in in what we watch doesn't expose us to to the
42:19last
42:19more than love so i don't know how how do we do with that as artists
42:30we're living in a very interesting time where um there's a lot of gender wars going on
42:38you know and what i mean by that like whether we want to admit it or not
42:44there are certain agendas that are aimed towards breaking the black family you know if you look at
42:50during they were they were they used different tactics then you know like the tactics they used
42:58then was migrant labor you know like dividing the mom and the dad so you had a generation of children
43:05that either grew up without dads or they grew up without both parents because you know
43:11that valley had to be working and then what happens when you have children raised without
43:16adult supervision they lack moral compass they lack uh clear role models you know things like that so
43:24there's been ways that they've been attacking us you know and and now the latest one of these gender wars
43:30where people are hurting them like people are hurting and and and we've all gone through it right
43:37we've all we've all been hurt and become the hurt her but at a certain point we have to stop
43:44the cycle and
43:45say when does it end and we have to take that individual responsibility upon ourselves to heal
43:52you know and only then can the love we give be nurturing and healthy because unless we we stop and
43:59pause amidst the hurt and the hurting like we're going to continuously pass on these cycles of pain and brokenness
44:05so we have to be the ones who heal you know and say no this can't be this country is
44:14wow man yeah that's that's amazing that's amazing um yo man i appreciate man for for letting me interview you
44:22man um because i'm excited because you know most of the time when i do interviews with female emcees it's
44:30mostly
44:31from the usa so i'm excited that you know yeah yeah so i'm excited that you know i had i
44:38had miss morena from
44:40here and i have you from durban you know what i'm saying so like i'm having different uh provinces and
44:48and
44:49i'm getting to see different perspectives you know what i'm saying and getting to understand um
44:55um where you guys come from and understanding you know your art that side you know what i'm saying so
45:01i'm excited about that and um i'm hoping this time goes by then you know uh we'll work together and
45:10we'll share your music and everything man um keep pushing much love man um we appreciate what you do my
45:17sister so before um can you please tell the family how can they can how they can reach you on
45:25social media
45:27sure uh shout out to nature so thanks for the follow day you can find me as lex lafoy on
45:34everything
45:34so lex lafoy and yeah please look out for the new uh single dropping next week friday it's called
45:42pretty boys and it's produced by vicky martini very gifted um young producer and rapper he's also the
45:51brother of um tione lime who is an amazing dancer from previously her group was called the trap girls
45:59so yeah man just there's such beautiful artists and creatives in derb and i just i wish we could
46:07shine more light on them you know like there's just so much uh giftedness this side from from the east
46:13coast yeah yeah okay on maybe do you think maybe like um what what ideas do you think um or
46:23suggestions
46:23do you think could be done to to to to to to to to to help the artists i said
46:29derby if you had to have a
46:31conversation with with with event uh organizers yeah i'm glad you asked this question because you
46:40you actually invited me to this interview in the comments of one of those discussions
46:48so yeah it's it's you know i've been in the time that i've been back in durban i've been researching
46:54a
46:54lot like trying to learn the market to learn the landscape because i mean i was i was away from
46:59durban for a long time like seven years is a long time you know it's like so so learning the
47:05market
47:06learning the landscape finding out who the key players are the gatekeepers um what's relevant shout
47:12out so um yeah what what i've observed in a lot of my research is number one like there's there's
47:22a
47:22need for structure there's a need for unity there's a need for order there's a need for professionalism
47:27here in durban we always wonder why why is durban left out why i was like we like we always
47:36wonder
47:36why why durban is left out why durban is sidelined but i realized it's also the way we we behave
47:43you
47:44know like i mean you can't behave in a non-professional way and expect people to take you serious
47:51you know so um number one our professionalism we need a lot more of that um number two
48:00um i also feel like it's the mindset in durban you know like um we a lot of the time
48:09durban durban
48:10people say the music scene the hip-hop scene now i'm trying to be more intentional when i say the
48:17music industry the hip-hop industry you know what i'm saying because there's so much power in our words
48:25right so so i i feel like the mindset is a huge uh thing as well and then third um
48:35kezden is a very
48:37is a kezden is a highly politicized environment you know um and with it being a majority of one culture
48:46compared to joba which is a metropolitan with multi-cultures there's a lot more room for diverse
48:53thoughts here there's a lot more room for you know you know what i mean like like if we are
48:59the
48:59same culture it's most likely we think in the same way but the moment we have a diverse culture we're
49:07able to learn from each other so i feel like the mono culture here in durban although it's highly prized
49:13and highly prided on and highly uh uh praised one of the downsides to that is that we lack diverse
49:22thoughts over here in durban you know so so and and and when i say that the highly politicized
49:30environment gets in our way sometimes is that if you look at a space like maboneng maboneng thrived
49:39because of private investments and private vision and private efforts right and and in durban
49:49the founder of maboneng he left here without having achieved what he wanted to achieve because of the
49:56political red tape and because of and because of the way they were blocking him you know so
50:05there needs to be a mindset of abundance within our municipality and within our local government
50:12that hey son there's enough for everybody here but they think there's not enough so they hold the
50:19resources tight and they block out they don't realize that the more uh diverse and global thinking we have
50:29the better for our city you know so it's it's a huge mindset thing and and the other day i
50:35was talking to
50:36jamal uh beautiful soul the founder of bubblegum club he was down in durban with spam and i was just
50:44like
50:44venting to him i'm like jamal durban can be so frustrating jamal
50:59go get your food exactly go get your food my son my daughter so um so yeah man like while
51:08it can be
51:08frustrating there's also a lot of room for for growth and opportunity and as much as i try to run
51:16away from
51:17it and i really wish i was in joeberg or london right now i feel like i'm here for a
51:23reason i feel
51:24like i'm the one who can actually do something for sure for sure
51:35i was saying to to uh sheikhani to shakes uh blessed soul ricky rick's older brother
51:44i was just saying to sheikhani yesterday i was like i was like it's a lot it's a lot
51:53how do i do it
