00:00The man you are seeing in the wheelchair being taken away by the police is an American.
00:03But not just any American.
00:05He is Matthew Van Dyke.
00:06In March 2026, he was arrested by the NIA at the Kolkata airport
00:10during a counter-terrorism operation.
00:12We'll come back to that in a bit, but first, let's see who Matthew actually is.
00:16So if we go by these reports, he is a security analyst, combat veteran,
00:20and a documentary filmmaker who likes to spend his time in conflict zones around the world.
00:24His story first grabbed attention during Libya's 2011 civil war,
00:28where he joined rebel fighters, was captured, and spent six months in prison before escaping.
00:33Since then, he has fought ISIS in Iraq, backed uprisings in Syria, and even joined Ukrainian forces.
00:38Throughout his armed voyage, Van Dyke was usually found fighting on the side
00:42where the U.S.'s strategic interests lay.
00:44Matthew, along with six Ukrainians, entered India on tourist visas.
00:48They allegedly traveled to Guwahati, then into Mizoram,
00:51and access restricted areas without permission.
00:54Investigators say the group crossed into Myanmar,
00:56where they allegedly made contact with ethnic armed organizations,
00:59some of which have links to insurgent groups in the Northeast.
01:02On March 13, the NIA arrested seven foreign nationals,
01:05including Van Dyke, who was detained by Bureau of Immigration at Kolkata airport.
01:09And on July 3, as you can see in this clip,
01:11he was brought to the Patiala House Court as the case progressed.
