00:00Hello and welcome. Good evening. You're watching Super 6 here on India Today.
00:03I'm Akshita Nanda Gopal, as always, getting you all the top stories that we're tracking this Tuesday evening.
00:08On the show this evening, we're going to be talking about the big showdown over Karoor.
00:13Chief Minister Vijay is headed there on Friday. The DNK attempted to stop him from visiting Karoor.
00:19In fact, they filed a plea in the Supreme Court, which has now been dismissed.
00:22The top court coming down hard on the DNK, forcing them to withdraw their petition.
00:27We're going to be talking about that and getting you details of what the Supreme Court has had to say.
00:31Also coming up on the show, from the state of Tamil Nadu, we're going to talk about the big TVK
00:36-DNK showdown
00:37over one of the ministers, Kirtana, who's always, of course, faced a lot of scrutiny, particularly on social media,
00:43putting out this video you see on your screens, where she was in a school interacting with students.
00:47The DNKs called her a reals minister. Why? I'll tell you in just a bit the controversy surrounding that particular
00:55video.
00:55So both those stories coming your way, but we begin with a tragedy that's playing out right now in Vyanard.
01:02It's monsoon season, and unfortunately, another landslide has been reported.
01:07This time, not a natural one, but a mudslide triggered at an under-construction site.
01:12It's brought back scars and memories of what happened in 2024.
01:16In this particular case, rescue operations are underway because it is suspected that some people,
01:21some workers are still trapped in that area.
01:24But I just want you to get a sense of really what's happened and the images that have come in,
01:29the CCTV footage on your screens right now.
01:31Just look at the intensity of that mudslide and people running for their lives,
01:36trying to get away and save themselves.
01:39Fortunately, the people you see in this footage seem to have made it out alive.
01:43Some of them are injured, and they've been rushed to a hospital,
01:46but this is a miraculous escape, to say the least.
01:49You see the moment the landslide occurs, pushing vehicles, and that tells you how intense that landslide was.
01:55The truck being pushed right behind, and you can see one man there in the blue shirt just tripping over
02:01and then pushed aside because of the mudslide there, and that, in a way, saves his life.
02:07This is the footage.
02:07I want to play this out for you because this is the most dramatic footage
02:10and gives you a sense of the scale of the tragedy that we're talking about.
02:14Right at the edge there, you see the break of mud, of the land sliding apart,
02:19and then the mud washing through the roads, pushing vehicles, pushing trees, pushing everything along.
02:25People start running for their lives, knowing that there's been a landslide,
02:29knowing that they could be in danger.
02:31Most of them you see around from the moment you see the CCTV footage.
02:35They managed to get away, including that woman who gets up and walks away to safety.
02:42The rescue operations are still underway right now.
02:46Chief Minister VD Satishan is also very closely tracking the work underway.
02:56Let me bring in Shibimol for the latest updates.
02:59Shibimol is headed to Vyanod as we speak, and we're getting us a ground report very, very soon.
03:04There's a red alert, Shibimol, for rainfall in Vyanod, which is what's worrying.
03:09You know, I remember in 2024 when you and I were there, when the Vyanod landslide had taken place,
03:14that was, of course, at a much bigger scale because you had over 300 deaths being reported.
03:18But we know the challenges that really go into the rescue operation in this kind of an area.
03:24Take us through the latest updates, Shibimol.
03:27Well, the rescue operations are currently undergoing there.
03:30As of now, till 5.30, the official number, the official death toll stands at 3.
03:35There is a possibility that this will increase because there are more people stuck there
03:40and the efforts are ongoing.
03:41But since it's been a long time, the authorities, the rescue operators say that
03:45there is very less possibility that they can be recovered alive.
03:48So that is the main concern.
03:50The death toll will increase is what we're learning at this point.
03:53And six people are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
03:56All their conditions are stable.
03:58All of them are stable.
03:59And all of them are laborers who were working as part of the construction project.
04:02Since the last two days, their construction work was not going on.
04:06And there was a labor camp also set up near.
04:08So some people, some laborers from there are the ones who are suspected to be stuck under the debris at
04:14this point.
04:14The NDR teams from Calicut and Wayanad are there, you know, involved in the rescue operation along with the state
04:21fire force
04:21and also the state disaster management force.
04:25Two ministers have also been sent there to coordinate the rescue operations.
04:29What, interestingly, what Minister T. Siddiq said is that this is a man-made disaster.
04:34It's a man-made landslide because this land, sand there was accumulated for a very long time.
04:39And a month ago, there was an order issued to remove it from there as the monsoon season was about
04:44to begin.
04:44But that was not followed.
04:45And that is what led to this crisis, led to this incident, is what the government is saying, calling it
04:51a man-made disaster,
04:52not a natural disaster or natural landslide like what we witnessed in 2024.
04:56The magnitude is comparatively less, but the efforts, the focus right now is definitely on saving the last life possible
05:05from there at this point.
05:06It's like they've woken up right after the tragedy.
05:09And so now a red alert has been issued.
05:12Just look at the intensity of that landslide on your screens once again, that CCTV footage.
05:16I just can't get over looking at it because it gives you a sense of, you know, not just the
05:20miraculous escape that so many of those people had,
05:22but just the ferocity with which that land is gushing, the mud is gushing, gushing toward the people there.
05:29Like should be said, the government believes that this is a man-made tragedy because this has happened at a
05:33construction site.
05:35We're going to continue tracking all the updates on this.
05:37But I want you to also take a look at the reactions that have come in.
05:41During the construction of the tunnel in Wainate Districts, there was an accident.
05:49Now seven persons are in the hospital.
05:53Now the forces are there.
05:56From the Wainate itself, there was a force.
05:59They reached on the support.
06:01And another force will be reaching there within a few minutes.
06:05And the fire force and the police are taking the recovery measures to find out the persons, those who are
06:13missing.
06:15The Disaster Management Authority and the District Elector has already issued an order on 20th of this June to remove
06:25all this soil from the support.
06:27But the preliminary information is that the contractors of the tunnel has not obeyed the order issued by the Honourable
06:39District Elector and the Disaster Management Authority.
06:42It is not a natural landslide.
06:45It is a man-made slide that has happened there.
06:50We have already given direction in the meeting and also in writing by the District Elector and also by the
06:56Department.
06:57Very correct instruction given to the Congon Railway.
07:02With regard to this, there is a chance of slide.
07:06There is a chance of slide.
07:08We clearly mentioned this and took immediate actions against this happening.
07:14But never did.
07:16Never did.
07:17That is a serious situation.
07:20The NDRF team consisting of 30 persons from Vyanod and also from Kodi Code already directed to rush to the
07:29location and already on the way.
07:32And Vyanod team is about reach.
07:34And the District Elector is monitoring in person.
07:37She is there.
07:38I, along with Mr. Revenue Minister, Mr. EPL Kumar, now going to visit the place and coordinate the rescue efforts
07:46and all.
07:48Over to our top story this evening.
07:50The fallout of the Karoor Stampede from months ago.
07:54The politics continues.
07:55Why?
07:55Because in a few days from now, Chief Minister Vijay is expected to visit Karoor.
07:59The DMKs tried everything they can to stop that visit, even going to the Supreme Court.
08:03And guess what today?
08:05The top court dismissed the petition by the DMK, suggesting essentially that politics was being brought into the court,
08:12saying do not use the court for your politics.
08:15This is not your political forum.
08:17They were also questioned why.
08:18The Supreme Court has questioned why the DMK could object to the Chief Minister of the State visiting a district
08:24and meeting with the victims,
08:25saying you can't stop the executive of the state from doing so.
08:28All of this forced the DMK to withdraw their petition.
08:32Let's get to all the details first in this report.
08:48DMK suffers a big blow in the Supreme Court.
08:52After the DMK filed a petition seeking to stop Tamil Nadu CM, Joseph Vijay's visit to Karoor,
08:58the Apex Court has refused to entertain the plea.
09:00The court made scathing observations on the DMK's petition.
09:06The most significant observation was that Chief Minister Vijay is not an accused in the Karoor Stampet FIR
09:12and has every right to visit the place.
09:15Pulling up the DMK, the court said it is not a political forum and that such petitions should not be
09:21filed.
09:21The court also observed that it cannot regulate the Chief Minister's visits and questioned how his visit meant for distributing
09:29already promised aid could influence victims or the investigation.
09:33On DMK's objections to State Minister Aadhu Varjana's speech on the stampede, the court asked why should a political rival
09:41be gagged during a CBI probe.
09:44Adding that doing so would amount to an injunction on free speech.
09:49Despite the Supreme Court's sharp observations, the DMK insists the outcome is not a setback.
09:55Do you see the Supreme Court's reply as a setback to the DMK because they've said that don't use the
10:01Supreme Court as a political fora?
10:03What's going to be the next move of DMK, sir?
10:05It is not a setback. We have moved. We have confidence in judiciary. We have moved a petition.
10:13The Supreme Court has given certain directions.
10:15They have said that we can reply to the ministers who make such speeches.
10:23The Supreme Court may have drawn the legal boundaries, but the political war over the Karoor Stampede is far from
10:30over.
10:31With Ennega Keshav and Pramod Madhav, Bureau Report, India Today.
10:37Let me bring in Pramod Madhav, who's joining us live from Chennai.
10:40We've got Srishti Oja, our legal correspondent also with us.
10:43Srishti, to you first on what played out in the Supreme Court earlier today.
10:48And what did the top court have to say about the DMK petition?
10:52Well, Lakshita, as we know, the DMK leader had mostly questioned two things in his petition before the Supreme Court.
10:58Firstly, the proposed visit by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay to meet the victims of the Karoor Stampede tragedy
11:05on July 10th.
11:06And secondly, he said that there are certain statements which have been made by ministers of the government who are
11:11also accused in the said case,
11:13which are basically apprehending that it may influence the investigation.
11:17Now, the Supreme Court has clearly not agreed with those arguments at all.
11:20The court today refused to entertain their petition while making some very strong observation.
11:26They raised a question that how can the Supreme Court, which itself directed a CBI probe in this particular case,
11:33now entertain a plea by a political rival?
11:35The court also questioned, does DMK now want Supreme Court to regulate a chief minister's visit or statements which are
11:43being made by the minister?
11:45The court also said that hypothetically, if an executive head, if the head of the government wants to go and
11:51distribute something which the government had already promised to the people,
11:55how can that possibly influence the trial or influence the witnesses?
12:00We also saw the Supreme Court remark that DMK should not make this court, make Supreme Court a political fora.
12:08So, these were the strong observations which came in from the Supreme Court.
12:12They very clearly told the DMK counsel that the court is not willing to entertain the petition and they advised
12:18the petitioner to withdraw it instead,
12:21also pointing out that there are certain repercussions that their petition might have which they haven't yet thought about.
12:28So, well, definitely a big setback for the DMK leader.
12:32They've had to withdraw their plea as a result of the very, very scathing observations there by the Supreme Court.
12:37Pramod Madhav is also live with us.
12:39Pramod, days to go for Chief Minister Vijay's Karur visit and there's all kinds of politics playing out.
12:44And it almost seems like the DMK is doing everything they can to try and stop Chief Minister Vijay from
12:49going to Karur.
12:51It's a very important thing, Akshita, considering that the unfortunate Karur tragedy occurred on 27th of September, 2025.
12:57So, imagine the kind of like almost seven months have gone by, but still the chief, I mean, Vijay did
13:01not go there.
13:02But after becoming the chief minister, he's now showing special interest.
13:05And now we also saw the minister, Aadha Vajna, clearly saying that there is a kind of a payback that
13:10needs to be completely paid.
13:11And then after that, we also saw the kind of issues with the Karnasuk case and perhaps the possible kind
13:17of legal things that are surrounding Sendhil Balaji
13:19and his brother, Ashok Kumar Ashwin, because DMK very clearly understands that TVK wants to blame DMK for the Karur
13:25tragedy.
13:26And Amit's chief minister has planned to go over there.
13:29And he's also expected to give them, you know, government orders and also another amount of ex-gratia and such
13:33things.
13:34And imagine if he goes and meets them over there and spends time with the families of the victims over
13:39there.
13:40Very clearly, it looks like DMK does not want any of this to happen.
13:43But in the court, DMK said that they do not want, you know, proper meetings between the ministers concerned or
13:48the chief minister.
13:49One more thing, Akshita.
13:51In the court, apparently, the lawyer called the chief minister as an accused, even though his name was not on
13:56the FIR.
13:57That was also brought in and the court had to intervene over there.
14:01So this shows a kind of, you know, interest DMK is showing in this particular case, Akshita.
14:05You know, there will be questions about what prompted the DMK to go to the Supreme Court.
14:09This is as weak a case as can be.
14:11You're first questioning how the chief minister can visit a particular district.
14:16Well, within his right, he's the state's executive and particularly to hand out a certain promised financial aid to victims
14:22of a tragedy.
14:23There, the case fell flat.
14:25Secondly, as Pramodh pointed out, to name Vijay in the petition claiming he's been named as an accused, Adhavarjuna too.
14:33That is the other reason the court intervened and said that's not the case.
14:36All of this is what led to the top court suggesting that the court is being dragged into politics by
14:43the DMK.
14:44And that's why they've refused to intervene in this matter, which means essentially the chief minister, Vijay, will be headed
14:49to Karur as planned in a few days from now on July 10.
14:53And thanks very much, Pramodh and Srishti, for getting us those details.
14:56Let's also get to the other big political showdown between the DVK and the DMK.
15:01Politics entering the classroom in Tamil Nadu.
15:03Every single aspect, every video, every issue now turning into a political fight.
15:09This time it was a school inspection by Industrious Minister S. Kirtana in her constituency that triggered a political row.
15:16In that video, Kirtana is seen talking to a student, asking what the student's parents do, talking about why they're
15:23not speaking in English.
15:25This was a video she posted on social media.
15:27The DMK has questioned her as to why she's going ahead and naming and shaming a child in this manner
15:33in full public view on social media, calling her a reals minister.
15:37The DVK has chosen to defend Kirtana.
15:39But let me play out that video for you and all the reactions in our next report.
15:48Tamil Nadu politics has now entered the classrooms.
15:52In the latest controversy, State Minister S. Kirtana visited the government school where she questioned students and teachers about their
16:01English proficiency.
16:03She also asked students about their parents' professions, drawing criticism that the interaction may have embarrassed both students and staff.
16:15Both of the names for their parents and with these people, and they are like, the answer is the same.
16:24She's telling her to make a book.
16:24Mother is not a kid.
16:25What does she do?
16:26I said, why didn't she do that?
16:28What's your father?
16:30You know what?
16:32What do you call your talk with?
16:34How is your relationship?
16:35What is your relationship?
16:37What's your relationship?
16:39You will be here in the northern zone.
16:42Yes, my father is my father.
16:46We can see the family.
16:46My father is my father.
16:49Yes, my father is my father.
16:50What is your father?
16:51That's my father.
16:52That's my father.
16:55You are my father.
16:56The school is a professional.
16:58And what are you doing?
17:02It is my father.
17:03I think you are a professional.
17:04You are a professional.
17:07The school inspection has now snowballed into a major political storm.
17:12Leader of the opposition, Udenidi Stalin, has condemned the minister's conduct,
17:17saying children should never be used for publicity.
17:21In a clarification, the minister defended her visit,
17:24saying she herself studied in a government school
17:27and claimed that her interaction exposed the reality of public education under the DMK government.
17:33The TVK also came out in support of Kirtana.
17:39See, I don't know what is interesting, because it is our own town and she wanted to go and meet.
17:43So, because, like, anything from the MLA fund and anything,
17:46they wanted to utilise within the schools and etc.
17:49But the CM office has given a clear instruction, like, unnecessarily, like, we should know,
17:53go to, including for the party killers and disturb or do unnecessary reviews with the unwanted departments.
18:00That has been already given.
18:02The classroom may have been the setting, but the battle is now being fought in the political arena,
18:07with both sides refusing to back down.
18:11With Pramod Madhav, Bureau Report, India Today.
18:18Let me bring in Pramod Madhav for more details on this.
18:21Pramod, the constant controversy and criticism from the DMK
18:26is that they've accused TVK leaders of being real leaders,
18:29of being real ministers, that they're too active on social media.
18:33Has the TVK chosen to defend Minister Keetana amid all of this controversy?
18:38One thing is very certain, Akshita.
18:39Even today, the Minister Nirmak Mal was speaking on this matter.
18:42He very clearly said that the TVK officials and even the party cadres
18:45are not allowed to go ahead and do any kind of unnecessary review meetings
18:49because this is a kind of, like, complaint that has been raised by the opposition
18:52that the TVK party cadres are entering official buildings and causing reviews,
18:56thereby causing hindrance to the official work over there.
18:59However, when it comes to Minister Keetana, it's a different story
19:01because she has gone to a school in her own constituency
19:04where the minister wanted to actually show that, you know, there was a kind of,
19:07you know, what is the kind of education that is being taught over there.
19:10That, she claims, was recorded on a television camera
19:13and not her own private camera and such, and that has become viral right now.
19:17But Keetana says that, you know, she wanted to only show that the education system
19:21needs to be revamped and improved for the benefit of the children
19:24who study in the government schools because she said that she also is coming
19:27from one such government school where she also had to face the mockery
19:30of not being able to speak English properly when she entered the corporate world.
19:34Along with it, she also put forward a question that DMK also has to,
19:37on the opposition has to answer, where she says that so many people,
19:41Netas, who are right now questioning her on this particular video
19:43or the people who are mocking her English,
19:46how many of those, their children are studying in government schools?
19:48It's also a question, it's a way she's, you know,
19:50ending her response with this particular question, Akshita.
19:53Endless political controversy on this.
19:55Thanks very much, Pramod, for getting us those details.
19:57Let's cut across to breaking news coming in.
20:01Okay, trouble now for Pawan Kalyan, the Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister
20:06in a 2017 student death case.
20:08It's come back to haunt him.
20:10A complaint has been filed against Pawan Kalyan,
20:12who's been accused of cheating, of breach of trust.
20:16What is the allegation here?
20:18The victim's family in this 2017 student death case
20:22has filed a complaint against Pawan Kalyan,
20:24claiming that he promised justice and didn't deliver,
20:27saying that the student's death was used for political gain
20:30and nothing beyond that.
20:32There's been no action taken beyond that.
20:34And so, now, she's also approached the cops,
20:36filing a complaint against the Andhra Deputy Chief Minister.
20:39Apoorva Jai Chandran is joining us with more details on this.
20:42Apoorva, take us through what this case was all about.
20:45Why does this mean trouble for Pawan Kalyan?
20:48What was his promise to the family that they're now claiming he didn't deliver?
20:52Well, in fact, Akshita, if you do see,
20:54this is regarding the 2017 Sugali Preeti case.
20:57And, in fact, what we are getting to learn is that back then,
21:01when this horrific incident had taken place,
21:03there had been a proor across Andhra Pradesh regarding this case.
21:08And not only that, Andhra Pradesh,
21:10now Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan,
21:12had also gone on, met with the family back then as well,
21:15and assured that justice will be committed out
21:18with, you know, Sugali Preeti and her family as well.
21:21And that's what we are also getting to see.
21:23Even earlier on, just the day before yesterday,
21:26when Sugali Preeti's mother had gone ahead
21:28and lodged a complaint right now,
21:30she has gone ahead and stated that Pawan Kalyan,
21:33the Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh,
21:35has gone ahead and used this none other than for his own,
21:39you know, for his own use.
21:43And that, in fact, during the election season as well,
21:46during the campaigning as well,
21:47he had talked time and again about Sugali Preeti's death
21:49and how there must be change in Andhra Pradesh
21:52in terms of the violence and the crimes against women.
21:54But even after coming to, you know, power two years on,
21:58there hasn't been any kind of action that has been taken in,
22:01which is why she has gone ahead and said
22:03he has used, you know, Sugali Preeti's death,
22:05the family's pain for his own use
22:07and rather there is no action that has been taken.
22:10So, nine years on, this controversy continues.
22:12Nine years on, you've got a complaint being filed
22:15against Pawan Kalyan over the student death.
22:18Thanks very much, Apoorba, for those details.
22:23Let's get you details now of the big controversy
22:26over the SIR process.
22:28It's currently underway in Karnataka
22:29and there's been a whole lot of politics over it
22:31with the NDA in Karnataka,
22:33alleging that the DK's government
22:35was trying to influence the clean-up of voter rolls.
22:38Amid that now, a fresh issue that's been brought up
22:40of little children being used also for the SIR process.
22:44The video that's led to this controversy is from Bella Gavi,
22:48where in the BLOs, as they're working,
22:51there are children also helping with the SIR process.
22:54We have blurred out their faces
22:55because these are minors that we're talking about,
22:57but this video of school children
22:59involved in the SIR process,
23:02involved in helping the BLOs,
23:03is what's triggered now fresh controversy.
23:06Already, like I said,
23:07we've been seeing a political war of words
23:09because the NDA has alleged
23:10that in districts like Ramnagra,
23:12there have been attempts by DK Shivkumar
23:14and his supporters
23:15to kind of influence the water clean-up,
23:18influence the SIR process,
23:20a claim that's also been refuted completely
23:22by the Karnataka chief minister.
23:25But this issue, clearly,
23:26the SIR process in Karnataka
23:28is right now in the spotlight
23:29for how the entire process is taking place,
23:32particularly with this video coming to the fore.
23:36Using school children
23:38to fill up application,
23:42it amounts to almost a child labor.
23:46So this is one more case of flagrant violation.
23:51Election Commission should take this issue very seriously.
23:55Using school children for this SIR process
23:58is nothing short of a travesty.
24:01So I asked the Election Commission
24:03to take action against this,
24:07in this regard.
24:08And also,
24:09the district collector,
24:11deputy commissioner,
24:11should seriously look into this whole issue.
24:14No, no, what?
24:15We have not done anything wrong.
24:17It is all the,
24:18Election Commission is under control
24:20of the government of India.
24:21What state government has control over that?
24:23It is all foolish,
24:25idiotic.
24:25This is not correct.
24:27They should go approach in a right way
24:29and get things done.
24:30We are also,
24:31whatever we are doing in a,
24:32transparent way,
24:34legal way,
24:35we are working,
24:35putting steps.
24:36How can you do wrong things?
24:38Impossible.
25:07First time,
25:09We are 3 star who are elected by the Vists of the MLA.
25:15They are essentially elected and elected elected to the party.
25:16We are elected to the court of the courts and they are elected by the Ontario force.
25:22They are elected to the Prime Minister.
25:24We are elected to sponsor the Premier to the Carrington Post.
25:29We are elected to the Capitol.
25:30We are elected to the local government to the country.
25:34We have to do this.
25:51Let me now get you a horrifying incident from Bengaluru.
25:56We advise viewer discretion simply for the kind of details that are emerging in this sordid
26:01crime that's been reported from Bengaluru.
26:02The parents of an 11-month-old baby, Renuka, have been taken into custody.
26:08They murdered her and tried to stage the death as an accident.
26:12The infant girl's father, Sheikappa, had initially approached cops that his baby fell from the
26:19bed and died while his wife, Vijay Lakshmi, had fallen asleep during breastfeeding.
26:23This is the complaint he filed.
26:25The police, upon investigation, found that simply not the truth because multiple external
26:30injuries were found on the face, chest, legs and even near the private parts of the baby.
26:35Police suspect that the two-foot-high bed could not have caused such severe injuries and they
26:41suspect that the parents are involved in the killing of their 11-month-old daughter.
26:46Multiple external injuries have been reported.
26:48The post-mortem has also detailed extensive internal organ damage, severe internal bleeding
26:54and respiratory failure.
26:56Now, what witness statements indicate is that the child was assaulted during a domestic quarrel
27:01between the parents, that she was unfortunately in the midst of an argument and they used her
27:07almost to prove their point and continue the fight.
27:11The police suspect that the infant was intentionally assaulted.
27:14They have now booked the parents.
27:15The motive, nobody knows.
27:18The initially été immediately sent the means of the men before the children
27:25The children from their coming cadre, but also didn't acontecer.
27:37I would tell her.
27:37But, when the child l Trent came into hospital, the drug who confirmed the child feeling
27:43into poison and the drug side, not a particularly.
27:44I would say she was again below her dying because she didn't to anymore enabling the
27:45I would say that blah, blah, blah, blah.
27:45I had answered my qu Thinking The child can't move as a horse, but a really физical
27:47girl baby.
28:09That's all we have time for in this edition of Super 6.
