00:03welcome back to another edition of straight out of flushing it's your boy dexter henry alongside
00:07my guy tyler ward aka warty and we are here to talk to you about the mets but specifically their
00:14owner steve cohen he joined the show podcast with john hayman and joel sherman earlier today and
00:21it was a really good interview i thought it was a pretty good one uh warty what did you think
00:26of it
00:26we're going to react to what cohen said here some of the highlights and things that we took away
00:30from here what do you think of the interview overall i thought the interview went very much
00:35along the lines of what i expected heading into it but there were also some remarks that steve made
00:39that i think clarified some things that maybe fans had speculated either this year or over the past
00:45year that we're going to get into and uh here kind of the bluntness by steve as he typically does
00:50talking about his disappointment in the club was obviously something that was not shocking here
00:55but obviously kind of you know reassuring that he is very much like-minded like many mets fans right
01:01now and how we feel yeah and he reiterated that a bunch throughout the episode and saying look i'm a
01:07fan i'm in this with the fans i know there's been some segment of the fan base that said oh
01:12he doesn't
01:12care i don't think that's the case and i i think that came across through this interview with joel and
01:18john now warty i thought there were some really good questions asked by joel and john that fans
01:25absolutely wanted to hear that had to be asked now first of all off the top why did this season
01:31go
01:32bad that is like the obvious question number one that had to be asked to steve cohen why such a
01:37bad
01:37season with all the expectations they put that out there joel and john did for steve you said the
01:42baseline was the playoffs the mets look like what does it look like they are nowhere near that
01:47right now looks like they're not headed there he responded and said the season was quote horrendous
01:54and wildly disappointing i think that's mild i'm sure some mets fans would say a little bit more than
02:02that he said a lot of change is going to come to new york that matters more pressure he did
02:08talk
02:08about this is the point i want to i'm curious about from you he did talk about when asked why
02:13he thought the season went bad he brought up injuries he brought up that there was a lot of
02:17change he brought up players underperforming all things that we've talked about on this show and he
02:23said it was a mix of everything coming together and that's fine and and well but the results still are
02:31what they are did you feel like that was an acceptable answer you guys i do think there's truth to
02:36what
02:36he's saying but at the same time as i've said before for some of this stuff nobody's trying to
02:42hear that right now yeah so i understand what steve is saying especially in the sense of like
02:48this was not just one thing and how we got here obviously it's a combination of players coming in
02:53you know especially in walk years players handling new york in the market for the first time the
02:58pressure that comes from media including people that we were just referencing in our great you know
03:02john hayman and joel sherman but i think if there was anything that steve stated that i personally
03:07did not love to hear at least from a fan point of view was more so in the well how
03:13the hell did we
03:13get here because in my opinion for a team of this status in this market with this payroll that should
03:21never be a question especially at this point in the season you should know full well how we got here
03:27based on the construction of the club and where the shortcomings most certainly were had with players
03:32and their lack of availability when it comes to health among many other things so i see what steve
03:38is saying and i know that he means this genuinely but from a fan point of view i think it's
03:43also fair
03:44to say well that should not even be in question like we should know like how we got here you
03:50know there
03:50were signs heading into the year that could lead cause for concern if say you know x y and z
03:55does not work
03:56out and everything has not worked out for the new york mets in the first half of the season
04:00so to throw it back to you dex what what's your thoughts on that do you feel similar or differently
04:05similar it's fine you have to talk about everything that has happened i don't ever believe it's one
04:10thing i'm a big believer on that in terms of team building in sports or why something could go wrong
04:15it's never one thing look i'm always going to say a lot of this comes down to players players have
04:19to perform players are accountable either they perform or they do not now that doesn't mean that ownership
04:25and that doesn't mean that front office doesn't have to put them in good situations to do that
04:29and of course when we talk about the word we always use on this show accountability
04:34wardy steve cohen who mentioned this he talked about the accountability word here in this episode
04:39of the show he said it starts with me i'm the person running this show talking about his team not
04:45the show the show but he was saying that and he's like look it starts with me and all of
04:51that is good
04:51and well you could tell me all this stuff came together but i think the major problem is and the
04:56disconnect for the fans is they've seen this movie before and they were sold that this was going to be
05:05different and this doesn't feel different at all i know i said this on the last episode but this is
05:11the
05:11case and when you talk about that shout out to my guy joel sherman because i thought he was great
05:17in
05:17asking a question about david stearns and he says look i saw the press conference we saw last week
05:22i've seen that before where the head of baseball operations sits there for the mets gets the manager
05:30up out of here and says yeah this is on me but they're still there and he asked steve cohen
05:38okay
05:41why is david stearns still here and i'm not saying david stearns shouldn't be here to be clear i'm not
05:46saying that because i do think that's a little bit ridiculous but steve cohen went in to say
05:50and there were follow-ups for this so i want to say i got to credit joel and john too
05:54i thought
05:54they followed up really well on this he said look he's a five-year contract i intend in seeing that
05:59through joel then followed up and said to me hey i want clarity are you saying that david stearns is
06:06going to be here for the duration of the five-year contract then steve cohen said yeah you know what
06:10i'm not going to fully say that we'll have to see if we get to year five i'm para quoting
06:14here
06:14if we get to year five and things are obviously not going well everything is fair game everything
06:19is open which is fine nothing's guaranteed decks that was that nothing is guaranteed yes i have
06:24that here in my notes too nothing is guaranteed he did say it's not going great two early field
06:30valuations five-year contract going to live it out those were the exact words before then he was
06:35followed up and asked again i before i get into how i feel but how did you feel about that
06:42response
06:42and then the follow-up that he got from joel and john and when he was asked more about specifics
06:47of whether or not he would let david stearns run through his entire five-year contract yeah i mean
06:53this was an answer that i pretty much expected um i think it would be kind of crazy for steve
06:58to come
06:58out here and say in great certainty until that contract is up david stearns is a thousand percent
07:04going to be the team president like i did not expect those words come out of his mouth nor did
07:09they
07:09and i appreciate the fact that joel did follow up after initially getting that answer from steve
07:14because at least in the moment it left it to a lot of fan reaction of being oh so david
07:20stearns is
07:21going to be here no matter what kind of thing and that's obviously something that a lot of people
07:25don't want to hear for a team that's been the worst in baseball for over a calendar season now
07:29you know over a calendar year i should say uh but to have the follow-up and to know that
07:33you know
07:34nothing's guaranteed that was my biggest takeaway from it and my other big takeaway that we'll get into
07:38more on this i'm sure is you know talking about what steve is kind of doing differently now or if
07:44he wasn't necessarily holding people accountable before he most certainly is now they know that
07:49they feel that david knows that obviously and you know steve didn't elaborate too much on this but he
07:55did you know uh quickly reference how when asked i believe by joel if he has basically or john you
08:02know
08:02a private group um around him to help further evaluate the organization the shortcomings and
08:08he said yes it's like he has his own team of people that's solely steve's team so that was an
08:14interesting take as well to see you know what steve is maybe doing differently now versus what he was
08:20doing entering the season initially or in parts of 2025 because he is very much an owner that doesn't
08:26want to be as hands-on as maybe some fans want him to be and i respect that because i
08:32think fans of
08:34other teams here in new york have seen where owners have been too hands-on and that's been problematic
08:38and i think you have to let if you hire people professionals to do their job you have to let
08:42them
08:43do their job now that doesn't mean you don't especially on david stearns's contract yes listen
08:48we've talked about this too five-year deal this is year one of him really having the team
08:55in his image or likeness it hasn't hasn't looked good right like we we know that it hasn't looked
09:00good at all when i initially heard the comments from cohen about okay we are going to sort of let
09:07it live out the five-year contract gonna let it live out i was like ah i don't know if
09:12i like that
09:12i wasn't happy initially either transparently i don't think anyone was yeah i was like no that makes
09:17it sound like he could be too comfortable here let me just be clear on something before we move on
09:22i always think that consistency matters that you can't just make change for change shake
09:29i think that you have to try to build that within an organization but there is points obviously you
09:33have to see where something's not working out at all whatsoever so i didn't want the
09:37comfortability of just being like hey he's got the five-year contract we're gonna let this ride
09:40nah that's that that can't be the standard there has to be um new standards here for sure a couple
09:48other things i thought that was that was notable real quick i'll say warty he put to bed anybody
09:54who's still worried about lindor soto beef which i've always thought was just nonsensical and a bit
09:59overblown he said the guys are fine they're better placed they were this year than they were last year
10:04okay fine he was also asked is he worried about this team's future especially going into 2027 with
10:10the uncertainty around the cba negotiations and all that and steve cohen said that he's worried he's
10:16definitely worried about this team he's really worried he's really worried and that was not only
10:20a reference to the cba but he was also referencing the like kind of the future of the team because
10:25hayman had also you know mentioned how the mets farm has been scuffling this year versus obviously
10:30skyrocketing was arguably the best in all major league baseball last year when you collect all the
10:35teams from low a to triple a so yeah that was paired with it as well with you know the
10:40mets
10:40shortcomings in their farm when looking ahead as we get into next season it was it was interesting to hear
10:46steve b as blonde about that the way that he was yeah it was for me too but i liked
10:50that that there
10:51was a concern there was the urgency um as we wrap here he did talk about look he referenced his
10:57own
10:57self the comments that he had made about delivering a championship for this fan base in the first five
11:02years and it not happening now being in year six of being an owner and how he feels like he's
11:07got to get
11:07some of these things done he did also talk about the next manager um and said they will do a
11:13thorough
11:13search once the season is over um he said there'll be no shortage of people looking to line up for
11:19this job which i know that we are sure about that will happen um so yeah he was also asked
11:25about does
11:26he think that he can win a championship in the next two to four years that he had said from
11:31the time juan
11:31soto signed and he jokes that thank god it's a long contract well soto doesn't opt out and go elsewhere
11:37which is also a possibility but i guess i'll wrap on this overall what's your major takeaway
11:43from this conversation that we saw with steve cohen and how do you think mets fans should feel
11:48about this going forward through the rest of the season my major takeaway is that the mets have more
11:53problems coming unfortunately and this is not that steve just laid the law that that's how it's going to
11:58be good problems or bad problems um more more more bad problems than good unfortunately decks
12:04uh mainly on again as it was emphasized by steve really worried about kind of the immediate future
12:09of the team not only this year where he's asking john and joel oh what are our chances of making
12:15playoffs this year in kind of a sarcastic fashion because he knows the season's absolutely cooked when
12:19talking about being a seller versus a buyer to talking about the farm and talking about the status
12:24of next season you know it's less than the cba because none of those things are going to kick
12:28it until post-2027 according to steve that's how from his understanding of it but from everything
12:34else i mean you know this is a season that a lot of ways is already lost and gone and
12:38almost flushed
12:38down the drain already and then you mean to tell me that oh yeah 2027 might not be much better
12:43that we
12:44need to rely on david stearns in this front office to be creative i you know not necessarily the
12:50things that a fan base wants to hear with everything continuing to go awry with the payroll and with
12:55the expectation what about you dex uh what i heard today was pretty much what i expected i mean what's
13:00he really going to say i'm glad to hear that he's concerned i did not think that he was not
13:05i'm not
13:05someone who didn't think that he wasn't connected with the fan base or didn't think that there were
13:09issues here i think he knows what the issues are i think what i want to hear going forward and
13:13i
13:13appreciate him taking the time to talk with john and joel and he has been visible to the media he
13:19is
13:19visible there at the ballpark that's something he talked about but i think the next steps are okay
13:24what's the plan going forward that's the real thing i want to hear at the end of the season and
13:28are you going to are they going to sell are they going to do more at the end of the
13:32season are they
13:33going to try to get the manager here that fits with this team that's really the things for me so
13:37today it was like okay glad you talked you let the fans know where you are didn't say anything
13:42earth-shattering or anything groundbreaking that i expected i expected him to care but
13:47this is where you are with things with the met season and we'll see how it is going forward but
13:51that's our reaction to what steve cohen had to say with john and joel on the show really good episode
13:58check that out if you haven't heard it go listen let us know our thoughts your thoughts in the
14:02comments about what you thought about what steve cohen said today that's going to do it for this
14:06edition of straight out of flushing he's tyler ward i'm dexter henry we'll catch you next time
14:10another edition of straight out of flushing peace
14:15you
