00:03another day with breaking news here to break down on the new york post sports youtube channel how
00:08we doing everybody my name is tyler ward co-host of the street out flushing podcast covering all
00:12things new york mets here with the amazing dexter henry we're riding solo again today because
00:16breaking news as a surprise absolutely nobody at least not a surprise to me who's been advocating
00:21for this in our podcast over the past north of two months met skipper no more as carls mendoza
00:26has been canned by steve cohen david sterns and the new york mets andy green who has been spearheading
00:32mets player development their front office over the past couple years will be the interim manager
00:36moving forward for the new york mets this season and we have a lot to say about this one mets
00:40fans
00:40let us know your initial thoughts and reactions in the comments down below here on the new york
00:44post sports youtube channel and of course wherever you get your podcast make sure to leave a rate and
00:48review here for straight out of flushing now to dive right into this this is far from a surprise okay
00:53if we go back to three weeks into the calendar season i have been on this platform advocating for
00:58carlos mendoza to be part of with because this is not just about mendoza missing the mark as mets
01:03manager in more ways than one but this is a continuation of a really bad baseball team going
01:08back to mid-june of last year the mets have the most losses in all baseball going back to june
01:13of last
01:13year so when we saw them spiral out of control in the month of may this was not just the
01:18start of the
01:18season per se but this was a continuation of something that had already begun going back over
01:23half a calendar year not a good look if you ask me so david stearns who puffed out his chest
01:30to
01:30media many times earlier this season even speaking to our great joel sherman here on the new york post
01:36saying how i am not going to answer questions every two weeks about the managerial status fed up on those
01:41questions reiterating that oh i love going to work with mendy every day he's a great guy and i believe
01:46that he's best fit for the job no one is going to have tougher questions to answer this evening in
01:50his
01:50presser than david stearns who will be live to media two guys like joel sherman etc at 3 p.m
01:55eastern
01:56later on today so let's get into how this happened and why this happened well it goes without saying
02:01why this happened because carlos mendoza first time manager let's break down the timeline for each and
02:05everyone you the 2024 season for many the mets are 10 games below 500 after becoming the first
02:10mets higher under david stearns as manager they go on their miracle run beginning in mid-may when
02:16francisco and door was moved to the leadoff spot pushing brandon nimmo out of said position
02:20then between that calling up a guy by jose iglesias omg jd martinez being a nice veteran leader
02:26that was a story for the mets in the 2024 amazing run of a season it had so much so
02:32much more to do
02:32with the mets making proper morale decisions coming together as a group with a far more sustainable
02:39roster that was bestowed upon them which was not just what david stearns built but what was also
02:44previously built by billy upper to a degree these were all things that were trending in the right
02:48direction for the mets in 2024 leaning to their run that fell short in the nlcs of the dodgers in
02:54six games paving the way for 2025 or even though carlos mendoza had some really questionable bullpen
02:59decisions in 2024 the mets had such a great run again you could argue that many was the manager of
03:04the year that year but it was pat murphy in the end who got it in his first year taking
03:07over the helm
03:08for credit council and the brewers we fast forward to 2025 what happens in 2025 and not
03:14so great constructed roster gets exposed from mid-june onward as kodai sanga tyler mcgill griffin
03:19canning etc what do they all have in common they're pitchers that go down with injuries then you have
03:23frankie montas the worst signing ever by david stearns to this point absolutely being useless
03:28shaman i being useless that entire year the mets not having nearly enough um for their lineup to
03:34actually prevail late in the ball game they could not get a single rally going entering the ninth
03:38inning in 2025 that summer went down a run or more they're pitching hung them out to dry and was
03:43giving
03:43them run so often so early no one was able to go deep into games and their offense was far
03:47from
03:47clutch the mets failed missed playoffs in the final series of the year in miami last year but they also
03:52had a bottom three record in baseball from mid-june onward last year so that was really the story of
03:57their season far more than the great first month and a half that they had to begin 2025
04:01staying the stage for 2026 for the new york mets what goes on to happen the mets after beginning the
04:06year seven and four going a downward spiral become the worst team in baseball more ways than one
04:10going a 12 game losing streak in the month of april endless reasoning to cut the cordial calls
04:15mendoza already because it is clear that he does not have a proper feel for this team and whatever
04:20he's saying is hitting deaf ears there's a lack of accountability there's a lack of direction and
04:24there is a lack of guidance that this team in this market most certainly needed so instead of being
04:28proactive like for an example a rival in the philadelphia phillies who twice over the past five
04:33years have fired their managers in season the first half and it's immediately led to success i
04:38understand the phillies have a far more constructed roster than the mets when looking at sustainability
04:42from their rotation to their offense to their bullpen the mets are very good we know that
04:47but the point still stands when you look at what the phillies did back in 2022 with joe gerardi
04:51can the first half of the mets no hit them and they had a great run against the phillies the
04:55first
04:56half they can joe gerardi they move up rob thompson former yankees bench coach just like carlos
05:01mendoza now moved into the interim spot for the phillies they go all the way to the world series and
05:06losing six games to the asters that year right fast forward a couple years later now we see
05:10dave dombrowski does not build a proper roster for the phillies he sits on his hands entering the
05:142026 season when he should have broken up some of that core at least that's what it seemed that way
05:18because the phillies obviously have failed to have deeper runs that they would have otherwise like to
05:22have since their great run against the asters a number of years ago they say you know what it's time
05:27to fire rob thompson the first half this year let's save some face a little bit and let's see what
05:31that
05:31could do for us by having dom mainly our first year as bench coach coming over from the toronto
05:36blue jays as interim manager after failing to land alex cora who i'm sure the mets will be trying to
05:42throw a massive bag at as we head into 2027 nonetheless since then the phillies have essentially
05:47been 15 games or higher above 500 under dom mainly i'm not saying that the mets will be 10 times
05:52better
05:52without many two three weeks in the season but they had ample opportunity in runway to make an
05:58in-house decision early this year they were complacent and chose not to do so because david
06:03stearns had to remind the media and us fans that oh i love coming to work with many every day
06:07he's
06:08the best man for the job said absolutely nobody than the man who hired him it makes sense he's trying
06:12to defend his hire but as has been the case with the roster construction it continues with the
06:16managerial decisions everything that david stearns has had his mitts on has been more than often than not
06:21wrong in constructing this team it's a shame to say but it's a reality it's a fact of the matter
06:26that yes
06:26carlos mendoza was not the right man for this position david stearns is going to have to remind
06:31all of us that this was obviously a tough decision but something that needed to be had here i will
06:35not
06:35at all be surprised if steve cohen is the one who spearheaded this decision for the new york mets
06:39because it would make a lot of sense if steve cohen was the one who spearheaded this decision
06:43for the new york mets because otherwise maybe david stearns is still complacent and many still
06:48manager for the remainder of the year okay so now you bring in andy green who's an interesting story
06:52andy who has more losses and wins as a manager going back to his time with the san yogo padres
06:57especially back in the day andy as we know former player most recently bench coach for david ross and
07:02the chicago cubs up until ross was part of with because they hired credit counsel after the mets
07:06failed to do so what david stearns a couple years ago we go on to see andy green leaves the
07:12cubs
07:12organization interviews initially for the mets managerial position entering the 2024 year loses
07:17that job to carlos mendoza funny enough but david stearns says andy you're a great mind let's have you
07:22spearhead our player to player development to which andy says okay i'll gladly do that but now andy
07:27gets his opportunity in this coaching staff the way that he initially wanted brings that feel as
07:31a former player but also unlike mendoza actually has plenty managerial experience now experience
07:37only means so much if you don't have success along with it so i'm not here to say that andy
07:40green is
07:41going to completely rewrite this ship and make this mets team million times better than what they
07:44currently are there's a great reality that the mets don't do much more than what they have to this
07:48point this year with andy as manager but there's one way to find out and the idea
07:52that the mets were just i don't know a bit more proactive as i've been saying my ghost dexter
07:57henry for months and months on that year just a bit more proactive and fired carlos mendoza when
08:02they should have early into the season maybe they would be in a far greater position it's a lot of
08:06success this year instead of looking down the barrel which is that you are likely to get a top
08:10six top seven draft pick than you are to be anything close to playoffs right now 13 games or so
08:15below 500
08:16okay everything about how the mets have operated this point has been malpractice it has been very
08:20difficult to see and that's why dexter and i have been trying to literally not trying we have been
08:25actively losing our minds because we can't comprehend and understand how a team can operate
08:29so piss poor without the reality that's literally right in front of them any common sense fan knows
08:34that carlos mendoza was not the right man for the job anyone with common sense can tell you verbatim
08:38right away that there was a change that needed to be had we're glad it's finally happening but my god
08:44it
08:44feels like it's too little too late which is a very frustrating reality that we find ourselves in as mets
08:49fans
08:49because again and they were proactive on this sooner it's not a guarantee that the mets would
08:53have gone all their winning it's not a guarantee that all everyone would have been healthy medley
08:57is not a fault for the poor roster construction nor is he a fault for guys being constantly injured
09:01that all falls on david stearns more than anyone else if not the player themselves but at the end of
09:05the day you want a change of voice you want a change of direction and the mets waited so long
09:10to do
09:11this when if they didn't maybe just maybe their season would have looked a bit different to this point
09:15nonetheless for better or for worse carlos mendoza is officially no longer mets manager
09:19we will see what andy green brings to the table for the new york mets and should andy not really
09:23be much of a needle mover for the mets this year there's a great reality that steve cohen and david
09:27stearns are gonna if david's still here i should say that much we'll talk about that another time
09:32should steve cohen maybe not level what he got from andy this year do not be shocked if the mets
09:37throw
09:37a bag at alex core to be the largest paid manager in major league baseball history this offseason as we
09:42get set for 2027 and beyond mets fans let us know all your thoughts in the comments down below
