With Jarren Duran having a fan removed from Fenway Park, the guys discuss whether fan behavior has gone too far, or if the players have gotten softer.
Transcript
00:00First of all, it's been a great several days here for the Red Sox.
00:04It's your fault, Rich. You're taking us back into a morass of negativity.
00:07It is not. This was a question that needed to be asked, and Chad Tracy answered the best that he
00:12could.
00:13But his answer, some people did not like his answer, and some people thought it was perfectly fine.
00:18Some people didn't like it like the guy asking the questions over and over and over again.
00:23By the way, might I say, being there last night, there were many people around me who were cheering Durant
00:27on and up
00:27after a strikeout or whatever it was. He'd come back to the dugout and be like,
00:31all right, you're all right, 160. I think people are very aware of how fragile the situation is,
00:36and they're trying to just pump him up.
00:37Can I just say this in his defense to somebody?
00:40I feel as if a guy that goes public with his stuff, whatever he's getting yelled at
00:48or people are screaming stuff at him, he hears everything. It's personal.
00:53Because he assumes everyone knows his story, and yelling at him about his poor batting average,
01:01he'll process it as they're trying to take him down.
01:05You know what I mean?
01:06Yeah, I understand what you're saying.
01:07Who knows? The Yankee fan yelling at him might not have known anything about his past mental health issues.
01:14But I feel like maybe he feels that way, and so he takes everything personal
01:19when if he didn't go public with it, he might not feel the same way.
01:23But don't you think in a situation like that then, and I obviously sympathize with whatever he may be going
01:30through,
01:30but this is a lot.
01:31This is a lot of cases where there was the one where somebody said,
01:36you need a tennis racket, and he called them a homophobic slur,
01:39and then there was what happened the other day.
01:41He has a track record now of drawing back and forth with players,
01:47and I just, whatever help he's getting, I wish it was better.
01:53I wish just someone could tell him that the more you respond, the more people are going to do it,
02:01and to lay back on that, and I know it's easier said than done,
02:06but when you find out that, according to reports, that this wasn't a personal thing,
02:10it was just about baseball, I'm sorry, man, but that's what people do at games.
02:15Like, you know, how many times have you booed a team you didn't like
02:18and said, like, you suck, you can't, you know, you can't shoot, like, you know, you're, I don't know, anything.
02:25I think baseball might be the hardest sport to play with hecklers of all the sports.
02:31Why? Because you go up to bat ten times, you fail seven times, you're going to hear it seven times.
02:38Like, you fail seven times, you hit three times out of ten, you're a really good baseball player,
02:44but the seven times you fail, and so you've got to hear it constantly.
02:47You're failing all the time on the field, and so you are going to hear it even amplified
02:51when people are hecking you.
02:53Let's go to Joe on line three.
02:55Joe, what's up, buddy? How you doing?
02:56Hey, what's up, guys?
02:58Hey, thank God Daryl Strawberry wasn't so sensitive.
03:02Daryl.
03:03And what about the whole Fenway Park basically singing Yankees suck, Yankees suck?
03:10Yeah.
03:10I mean, what is Chad talking about?
03:13They're protecting their players.
03:15That's worse than Jalen Brown's dad standing up for him.
03:20I mean, what are we doing raising a whole bunch of people that are getting stuck up for
03:24when they need just a little bit thicker skin?
03:27Well, let's go to Mike on line one.
03:29Mike, what's happening, man?
03:30How you doing?
03:30Hey, Mike.
03:31Hey, how you doing?
03:33Great.
03:35So, Jaren Durant is a professional.
03:40You guys are professionals.
03:42We spend most of our lives doing our job.
03:46So, imagine being heckled.
03:49Like, you guys are just saying, you're right there.
03:52You're not like Teddy on a football field moving around that football field the whole time.
03:59You're right there batting every day or every inning or, you know, a lot at the game anyway.
04:06You're hearing it the whole time.
04:08That is personal.
04:10You take that personal.
04:11When you kind of get heckled by your fans or the people that don't like you, you have a chance
04:18to heckle back or jar with them or whatever.
04:21But, but, but, but, but, but, but Mike, but, but Mike, if they're not saying, if they're talking about your,
04:26hang on, Mike.
04:27Like, but the thing is, if they're making fun of your, like, they're ripping on you for sports things.
04:32Like, apparently they were making fun of his batting average.
04:34Dude, that's part of the game.
04:36It's like I'm third down when the crowd goes crazy.
04:39I agree.
04:39You can't, that's part, your mental toughness is what makes the great ones great.
04:44And being able to drown out the noise.
04:47And so, I, in this case, from what it sounded like, it wasn't anything that was over the line.
04:53If it is, get them out of there.
04:54No, no, no, I get that.
04:55Yeah.
04:55I get that.
04:56My point is that back, back in the day with the players we grew up with, they could jar back.
05:02It wasn't as big of an issue, but it also wasn't being seen by anybody.
05:06But the person, you know, nowadays it's being seen.
05:11Jared, you know, he reacts.
05:12He doesn't do it the right way sometimes.
05:14But nowadays you, you jar back the fans and oh, it's big news.
05:19Whether, whether you're in the right or not.
05:21I mean, it's a good point.
05:22What was, it takes a good point.
05:24What was the best heckle you ever heard, Ted?
05:26One that you were like, dude, that was so good.
05:29I kind of respect that.
05:29Yeah, I don't think I've ever heard like a one that really just landed home.
05:33Other than, I told you Fireman Ed was yelling at me, but I can't remember exactly.
05:36I just remember it was Fireman Ed.
05:38I would just go, dude, you're wearing an airplane on your head.
05:40Yeah, dude, seriously.
05:41But then, there's the power that Fireman Ed has.
05:45He gets the entire stadium to just be quiet.
05:47And then he does the JT.
05:49So, you know, so there's a little respect.
05:51But nothing, nothing has ever been said to me that was where I felt like the worst stuff
05:58I've ever gotten was in when I first got into radio and I went public with my personal stuff
06:02and the text line.
06:03Because it's one-on-one.
06:04Like 603 Texture mentions golf and tennis.
06:06You're seeing that a lot in golf.
06:07Like guys not able to take it from the galleries and like complain.
06:11Remember during the Ryder Cup, people were complaining about how the treatment of the English people.
06:14It's a new generation of athletes.
06:16I'm telling you.
06:16It's not.
06:17Ted grew up tough.
06:18Like he was ready for that stuff.
06:20These kids are not.
06:20Again, but the football field, you don't hear it.
06:23Boy, golf course, you hear everything like succinctly.
06:27Baseball field, tennis court.
06:29It's just, it's a quieter atmosphere.
06:31And so they're going to hear everything people say.
06:34Unlike in a football field where you can't hear.
06:36It's just, it's just ambient noise.
06:37Let's go to Nick.
06:38I'm on for Nick.
06:39What's up, man?
06:39How you doing?
06:40Hey guys.
06:41How's it going today?
06:42I, uh, I just want to warm off of what you guys just said there a little bit.
06:48Uh, I don't think, uh, that guy has seen the text line enough to know that you guys don't get
06:53enough,
06:53uh, uh, criticism of your own from, uh, some of these people out here, but no, uh, no, I, I
07:02just want, I,
07:03uh, Jaron Duran must be softer than puppy's poo because I mean, you see Mac Jones back in the day,
07:10get absolutely booed off the field.
07:14You get zappy chants across the entire field.
07:17You're literally calling for another player to play your position.
07:20And did they kick out the entire stadium?
07:24I mean, it happens.
07:25It's part of sports.
07:26It is.
07:27And as I said, if you just don't, just don't be a, don't get personal.
07:31And that's what I was trying to ask.
07:32You're right.
07:33If you don't react, it goes away.
07:34People stop.
07:35Yep.
07:35Let's go to Richard on line five.
07:37What's up, Richard?
07:37Hey, Richard.
07:38Hi.
07:38It's always a pleasure listening to you guys in the afternoon.
07:40Thanks, buddy.
07:41Hey, I just want to say, you know, there's two sides of looking at this, but you know, in the
07:46old days,
07:46I remember the kid going to Fenway Park, you actually had tickets right on the back of the ticket.
07:51It had their admission policy, you know, Fenway Park.
07:55And if I can make a few points before you, before I get cut off, you know, they've got a
07:59behavior policy
08:00and they have a strict code of conduct and requires the ticket holders to behave respectfully.
08:05And it says it right there that violations of this probably result in immediate ejection without a refund.
08:10So you're going into this, you know what could happen.
08:13And I can tell you, listen, I've been at the game plenty of times,
08:15and there's always one jerk that's in your section.
08:18And, you know, I don't mind anybody shouts and tell somebody that they suck and stuff, you know,
08:22but I'm not going to listen to it for five and six innings.
08:25I'm not going to sit there with my wife and my kids or my mother and my father and listen
08:28to it,
08:29especially if it's a Yankee fan.
08:30I'm going to take his head and I'm going to jam it in the seat.
08:32I'm going to get him away.
08:34Well, that's the kind of regulation we need.
08:36I'll dump his beer over his head.
08:38Honestly.
08:39You need to call him Jaron Duran.
08:40You can get him tickets to every game.
08:43And if someone starts razzing him, he just jam his head into the seat.
08:45But it's a good point.
08:45In the old days of the rivalry, a Red Sox fan would have beat the snot out of this guy
08:48for ripping Jaron Duran's batting average.
08:51That's what we did.
08:52You're right.
08:53Maybe the fans have gotten soft.
08:55You're right.
08:55Nobody said that this is a Yankees fan.
08:57They're letting him do that?
08:58They're letting him get into Jaron Duran's head?
09:00The Fenway Park code of conduct is refrain from offensive language and hate speech
09:04and be respectful of others.
09:05So that's very vague.
09:06I mean, they could just take that whatever they want.
09:08Yeah, because hateful language could be Yankees suck.
09:10Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:11Do we know for sure this was a Yankees fan?
09:13I'm just going by the guy that called in and said he was.
09:16I'm sure we've all experienced this.
09:17But when I was at the game a couple weeks ago, there were a few.
09:21These kids must have been 13.
09:23And they were ripping Caleb Durbin.
09:26And it was so funny because they were clearly Red Sox fans.
09:29And we had just had Lorenzo on.
09:31So I was like, hey, he just hit two homers.
09:33And they're like, no, get him out of here.
09:36So it was our own fans.
09:38Well, I told you Contreras was jawing off to two guys that were in a Harry Potter 30 years
09:44of magic jersey.
09:45It was a guy who said Hufflepuff on the back with Red Sox on it.
09:49And I'm like, of all the people that you don't want to be picking a fight with Contreras,
09:54Contreras will get you, man.
09:56Contreras will get you, man.
