00:00I'm David Valorado. The news is brought to you by the elder law attorneys of Julian Gray Associates.
00:04Safeguard your assets and ensure your wishes are honored. The clock is ticking and Pennsylvania
00:08appears to be unlikely to have a 2026-27 budget in place by the midnight deadline tonight.
00:13The state house approved a 55.3 billion dollar budget back in April, but Senate Republican
00:18leaders have balked at the price tag, which is nearly five and a half percent higher than last
00:22year's spending plan. Mars area school district teachers face a contract deadline as negotiations
00:26continue. News Radio KDK's Tamara Rush is in the newsroom with details. David, after 20 bargaining
00:31sessions over the past year, Mars area school district and its teachers union remain divided on
00:36pay, health insurance, and the length of a new contract. The school board is proposing 3.5 percent
00:42annual raises over three years, while the union is seeking larger raises over five years, arguing
00:48teacher salaries lag behind neighboring districts. Both sides are expected to return to the bargaining
00:53table on July 7th as they continue working toward a new agreement before students return
00:58this fall. In the newsroom, Tamara Rush Newsradio, KDKA. Temperatures today are once again expected to hit
01:04the mid-90s, reaching near 100 by the end of the week or so. UPMC Chair of Medicine, emergency
01:09medicine rather, Dr. Don Yealy, says the high temperatures can be especially dangerous for the
01:13elderly or people with underlying medical conditions. The other thing to do as a good community member
01:18or a neighbor is to check in on others that you know that might be in that situation. The heat
01:25effect
01:26can be a little bit insidious at times, and they may not recognize it. So you checking in on them
01:32could be
01:33a life-saving action. For your pets, Dr. Mike Hutchinson of Animal General in Cranberry says any outdoor
01:38activity should be limited to short and shaded potty breaks. You want to make sure they have plenty of shade
01:43and plenty of fresh water at all times, and please don't take them in your cars. Do not leave them
01:48in
01:48your cars. Leaving the air conditioning on isn't enough anymore, unfortunately. Even the police have
01:54multiple alarms that go off when that temperature starts to go up inside their cars. They don't
01:59depend on just one, so we shouldn't either. Today is expected to be another big day of decisions from
02:04the U.S. Supreme Court. Among them, the justices could decide on President Trump's attempt to block
02:08birthright citizenship. They follow major rulings yesterday. Here's ABC's Karen Waugh. On election
02:13security, the justices ruled that mail-in ballots arriving after Election Day can be counted. It's a
02:19setback for President Trump's push to restrict voting by mail. I think it was very detrimental to
02:24honest elections, but it is what it is. But the court also handed Trump a big win, expanding his power
02:31to
02:31fire officials at independent regulatory agencies. Chief Justice John Roberts writing,
02:36the president may remove his subordinates at will. Everyone's received plenty of advance warning about
02:42the upcoming closure of the Parkway East, but as NewsRadio KDKA's Paul Alexander reports, the original
02:47closure dates have now been identified as tentative. A flyer that hit mailboxes recently said the closure
02:52dates are tentative. 376 will close between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and the Edgewood-Swiss Hill exit
02:57from July 10th through August 3rd. The 75-year-old commercial street bridge will be demolished and replaced.
03:02The notice goes on to say that these dates are subject to change as unforeseen issues may arise
03:07during the project. Factors that could impact the timeline include weather, equipment, and personnel
03:12availability. The contractor has incentive to meet the deadline and there's a disincentive if they
03:17miss the deadline. You can get the very latest updates at pa.gov backslash commercialstreetbridge.com.
