00:01do the texans need to stop clutching their pearls and pay i don't think anybody should
00:07i don't think anybody should ever stop clutching clutch clutch away baby clutch away you got them
00:11they're yours clutching but go ahead i'm sorry we'll get to the audio i don't know if that even
00:15applies to when it comes to paying a quarterback i don't know if you would say i don't know if
00:19i
00:19would describe the texans right now as clutching their pearls in this quote-unquote standoff if
00:25you will between them and stroud but nonetheless that's what one former nfl player and scout
00:29thinks we'll get to that audio here in just a moment i'm luke morrow in for ron alongside clint
00:35t mill on the other side of the glass as well you can always join the conversation 713-572-4610
00:40on the text line or in the youtube and twitch chats as well ron will be back in tomorrow
00:46we assume and uh in the meantime good to be hanging with you um so yeah as i said bucky
00:52brooks played
00:52in the nfl was a scout now covers the nfl i think he still works for nfl network but it
00:58is a little
00:59odd espn took over nfl network and people moved around so i don't know what what he's got going
01:03on but he does have a podcast and he was talking on that podcast over the weekend uh about cj
01:09stroud
01:09and he used that line i just referenced the texans should stop clutching their pearls and pay their
01:15quarterback we have a few different pieces of audio from bucky but here's uh the first one of
01:19bucky using that line about the texans to me this is one where the houston texans would be wise to
01:25come
01:26up off of it uh open up the wallet break them off a deal that's probably about 55 million annually
01:31because when we continue to look at the franchise tag and the way that it's going the franchise tag
01:36is going to be at 50 million and even though you have them on the option that are putting at
01:4025.9
01:41million dollars you are best to go ahead and pay cj stroud what you think the market is worth rather
01:48than wait and he becomes a 60 million dollar quarterback so quit clutching your pearls houston texans
01:53write the check cj stroud deserves to be paid not on his last postseason performance but on the work
02:00that he's done the previous uh time before those outings he certainly deserves to get paid should
02:06the texans stop clutching their pearls and pay pay cj already absolutely not look i love i love bucky
02:13brooks i think he does a hell of a job i just completely disagree with bucky where he's at right
02:18now look this is not a franchise tag play the franchise tag has no place in the cj stroud
02:23conversation i i don't think he ever sees a franchise tag i don't think the texans
02:28are are interested in paying a quarterback 50 plus million dollars a year on a franchise tag if they
02:33do get that get there beyond you know that would be two years from now after the fifth year option
02:37of paying him 20 some odd 20 what was it 29 27 whatever it was million so i don't think
02:43this is a
02:44a franchise tag conversation at all at this point i and and you look the the best case scenario
02:52for the houston texans is that cj stroud plays well enough where he puts them in position to
02:59potentially pay him 60 million dollars a year that is that is the best case scenario for the houston texans
03:07right the the the reality of it is now i will say this i as everybody knows i am i
03:14am a i want to
03:15see more guy i think the worst thing that texans could pay sidey 55 million dollars a year pay cj
03:23stroud 55 million dollars a year why oh well because miami did it with tua that worked out real well
03:29for
03:30them didn't that was smart right the the trevor lawrence i think the jury's still out on on whether that
03:34that jacksonville the jaguar nation uh is happy that they paid him 50 million plus not to mention
03:40that 50 million dollar a year 55 million that was two two three years ago when they were paying that
03:45kind of money so i don't think cj would be smart to take that kind of money at this point
03:50in time so
03:50i i just i don't i disagree wholeheartedly with bucky brooks i think this is one where i i have
03:56to see
03:57another year we look we can sit around and i'm on record of saying this i think both parties involved
04:04have more than enough info data to build their case of why they're they're doing what they're
04:12doing whether cj stroud wanted to hold out and command demand 60 million dollars a year or the
04:18texans wanted to say hey no you're going to play year four under your current contract with no
04:22extension i think both parties have more than enough reason to justify that stance i'm on record i think
04:31the texans would be crazy to pay him 55 million or more i think cj stroud would be crazy to
04:36take
04:36less i think that's where both parties are right this second and again it would be crazy for the
04:44houston texans i'm a i want to see more anyway hell i wanted to see more dak prescott and he
04:49played an
04:49mvp level for multiple years i am a i want to see more if i've got the opportunity if i'm
04:55an
04:55organization and i've got a four year kind of option there is no reason for me to pay you after
05:03three now i mean unless unless you're just lock stock and barrel this is a dude pat my homes you've
05:09already made runs to playoffs whatever unless you're that guy like if you've got two more years
05:14to see if this is real to see how how long this is is this something we can actually see
05:20playing out
05:21for eight or ten years or is this just a flash in the pan if you've got two more years
05:25of a contract
05:26to not see that fourth year oh because it may go up two three four million dollars a year next
05:33year
05:33who cares man the worst thing you can do is pay somebody 55 when you're unsure and then be stuck
05:40with them for three more years and be stuck with a guy that you knew wasn't the the player for
05:45whatever
05:45reason or the leader for whatever reason and now you're stuck with that guy for 55 per moving
05:51forward i i think i think uh again i just completely disagree with bucky brooks on this one right here
05:56luke yeah i'm more in your camp than than others in this stroud discourse where i like how the texans
06:02have played this to this point there is no reason to pay him just yet and i do need to
06:05see more i would
06:06not feel comfortable committing that big payday to him just yet and i'm also somebody my personal life
06:11that i do try to get as much information i can before making a decision so if you have the
06:15opportunity now to get further information on your quarterback before making a potential
06:19investment uh why not do it as opposed to to rushing into the quote-unquote rushing into the
06:25decision now or being forced feeling like you have to pay him already uh when you still want to see
06:30more so i'm on your side in that and um and that the texans don't need to be in a
06:36rush to do so and
06:37like you said it's it's a good problem if he just go out there and play great and you have
06:41to pay him
06:42now more a year from now than you would now i think that's worth the peace of mind i'll pay
06:46that
06:47tax on peace of mind knowing like yeah this is our guy and we do want him and need him
06:52for the next
06:52five six however long the contract is even if it costs us an extra 10 million a year on top
06:58of it
06:59whatever it might be well that's worth it but but luke if you look at and i'm just i'm just
07:04speculating
07:05here because i don't i don't i don't have privy to the the inside information but if you again just
07:10look
07:10at the moves that that have been made and what's been said about cj stroud now this will all fall
07:17by the wayside when the season starts and we'll see exactly what happens but the simple fact that
07:22they have not paid him yet tells you that they're not convinced that that that he is worth them
07:28breaking up their roster ultimately to pay him 60 million dollars a year they're not convinced
07:33that right now they need to put that on cj stroud and in a year or two they've got to
07:38then change their
07:39whole philosophy of of roster construct right there that that's the the deal with the texans
07:45the texans do you feel like the way that you are built right now that you need even if you
07:51had one
07:51even if cj stroud goes out and plays like a 60 million dollar quarterback does domico ryan's and
07:57nick casario believe that they need a 60 million dollar quarterback to go out and win the way that
08:02this team has to win football games i think that's those are very i think inside that building those are
08:08very very real conversations or situations or or unanswered questions that they they contemplated
08:19and decided to not pay cj stroud this offseason and i think the answer is no for them if i
08:24were to speak
08:25for the organization because we saw davis mills come in and i'm not going to start the whole
08:29conversation that davis mills is a better quarterback yadda yadda not what i'm saying but they did go 3 and
08:33beating two playoff teams with davis mills at quarterback so i could see them convincing
08:38themselves in that building of why do we need to commit 60 million to a quarterback when we have
08:42this defense and we have enough pieces on offense that davis mills can come in and still keep this
08:47train on the tracks and we can save enough money to keep this number one defense well look i'm not
08:53i'm
08:53not short-changing cj stroud by any means i'm on record of i i think all the the short-changing
09:00of cj stroud's skill set i think is is crazy i think it's ludicrous he can spin the football
09:06and play the position physically with anybody out there i mean obviously within the same skill set
09:12like right not not like lamar jackson obviously right but i mean within the same skill set i mean
09:17he can spin the football with anybody out there to me the reason i'm i'm bullish about it is i
09:22believe
09:22it's a the bigger piece is the is the leadership piece um i think i think that's the piece that
09:27that
09:28one i think they they covet the most is the leadership piece more so than a big arm more
09:33so than an athlete more so than than you know a great friend to everybody i i think they covet
09:38the
09:39the the elite alpha leader um and and right now we haven't i don't believe they've seen that
09:45from cj stroud right and so i just i think if you look all the decision makers in this
09:52in this uh in this organization right you look at demico's right throughout if we're being honest
10:01i mean trying to think where he was early in his career as a coach but if you look at
10:07when they
10:08started winning in san francisco it was jimmy garoppolo you know what i mean it it was i mean
10:13hell the kid that's out there now was well i think they're demico no he wasn't there demico's last year
10:17was he yeah he was he had to be demico's been here three years and and buddy's already got paid
10:22so he had to be out there a year with him the kid at iowa state who am i thinking
10:25of rock purdy right
10:26but you look at who they kind of their whole mindset they got mac jones out there under contract right
10:31and won't trade him right so like their their belief where demico came from is we don't need
10:39the uber gifted athlete or the uber gifted passer of the football to win football games right and you
10:45you can even go back and look i know tom brady people don't realize about tom brady tom brady from
10:49a physical standpoint left a lot to be desired i mean arm strength athletic ability all the physical
10:56traits tom brady left a lot to be desired and so you look at nick casario and you look at
11:01demico
11:02ryan's i don't think either one of those guys feel like they have to go out there and have this
11:06elite
11:06passer of the football or this elite athlete to go win games and and be a second round
11:14playoff team right i i don't i don't think they i think they they they feel like they got to
11:20have
11:20an elite leader i think they feel like they got to have an elite processor i feel like they got
11:24to
11:24they got to have a guy that is wholeheartedly committed to what they're doing offensively
11:28whatever that may be but the other stuff that everybody gets hung up on and everybody wants you
11:32to sign a sign a sign to an extension i just don't think that means a whole hell of a
11:37lot to this
11:37organization all right let's it doesn't mean as much as the other pieces to this organization
11:44and the thought that you know that they want to see one more year from cj stroud or the thought
11:51that
11:51hey man we don't have really room for a 60 million dollar quarterback on on with how we we want
11:56to
11:56build this thing i think those are very real situations and possible situations with demico and
12:01nick yeah i'm with you i think usually it's the thought process of a defensive head coach but to
12:05your point i mean it's kyle shanahan in san francisco and he feels like that plug in whichever
12:10quarterback and you know we can go win games uh you you referenced earlier tua and trevor lawrence
12:16bucky brooks actually referenced them as well in his conversation tyler this is cut number two
12:20as we uh go somewhat out of order here but here is bucky brooks talking about cj stroud and uh
12:26his
12:26comparison to trevor and tua we have seen these quarterback deals they only go up they never go down
12:33but more importantly when you're cj stroud there's no reason for you to take a below market deal
12:38when you look to your division rival the jacksonville jaguars and you look at trevor lawrence
12:42and trevor lawrence has a five-year 50 five-year 275 million dollar contract and you could argue
12:48that you're a more accomplished player than he has been you also can look at brock purdy you can look
12:53at jordan love and you have reasonable arguments that your pay should exceed what they make or should
12:59at least be in range with what those guys make look i think stroud is a better quarterback
13:05certainly tua i would pay stroud i think he should make a lot more than tua but i also don't
13:09like this
13:10and maybe this is just ridiculous of me to even think this way but a lot of people will point
13:14to
13:14that and say hey trevor lawrence is getting this much stroud should get this much too is getting this
13:18much it's the class would always be like well if kevin jumped off the bridge would you jump off the
13:23bridge like just because one team makes a bad decision i don't want to then be forced to make a
13:27bad
13:27decision myself if i'm the texans so i agree that stroud should be paid more than even those two
13:33names or a lot of the quarterbacks out there that are getting a lot of money but at the same
13:37time
13:37if i speak out of both sides of my mouth just because one team made a bad investment doesn't
13:42mean i should leap at the opportunity to also make a bad investment well if if you've got a point
13:47to
13:47a piss poor investment into a given the the head trauma that he went through um and and i i
13:53think look
13:54before you know liam cohen got to town i think most people thought trevor lawrence was going to be
14:00was going to be good money at bad given but you look at trevor lawrence at 55 million dollars a
14:04year
14:05i think that was signed two two plus years ago
14:06you
14:06you
