Tejay Vows To Follow Soccer
Transcript
00:00now in training camp uh is always interesting always interesting uh what do you have for us
00:07you said you've got some conversation that's what we need this time of year we have we've had quite
00:13some conversations on this show today uh jacob if i tell you the letters v a r do you know
00:19what that
00:19is uh and regarding soccer v a r no no do you know what the box with your fingers means
00:31when the
00:31refs make that it now i do it means they're going to review virtual assistant uh replay uh yeah that's
00:41it's video assistant referee but yes for lack of better terms it's it's a virtual review basically
00:47uh it's going going to the challenge it's throwing the red flag uh they have the overhead cameras that
00:54can help them with offside calls have you seen the controversy that i'm referring to now oh no i
01:00haven't so look up i don't know if you can find it look up like colombia portugal v a r
01:05this is making
01:06its rounds of it happened on uh saturday friday or saturday night uh portugal played colombia
01:13it was nil nil nobody scored colombia did score in like the 80th minute and they wiped it off for
01:20offside uh and they showed the replay on tv and everybody looked at it and they're like
01:27it looks onside to me i don't think anybody's offside i don't know and then they're like nope
01:32they said it's offside and then you know a couple minutes later we get the photograph
01:37of where they crossed the line here i'll send it to you the toe yes there was a singular toe
01:43offside and people are there's there's a little bit of discourse going on and this calls back to
01:50the mlb argument with uh abs that i bring up all the time is that a lot of soccer people
01:57i've learned
01:58don't like var for this reason to where soccer is a sport that is so hard to score and we're
02:07wiping
02:07goals off because you are a toe offside it just might not be necessary they said that it's probably
02:14better in a world where it's a judgment call by the refs to just say yeah he was close enough
02:20that
02:20we're going to count that the same way that he said you know what that one probably caught the
02:25corner we're going to call it a strike and it's gotten some mixed reviews people are really you
02:29know back and forth about this of one obviously it's the rule may as well get it right and two
02:36people are saying this is too much i mean is he off by a toe he is by the definition
02:46of being off
02:46and this it's hilarious to me and this is why i want to talk about it because we've had literally
02:51the same argument two months ago about abs about you saying well is it a strike like well by the
02:58definition it is a strike but it shouldn't be they need to change the rule okay so what do you
03:04change
03:04the offside rules so that's the thing about soccer that's more confusing than the baseball rule
03:08in baseball my proposal is that you need to get at least you know 35 of the ball in the
03:14strike zone
03:15or 50 of the ball in the strike zone for it to be a strike or something like that which
03:18i get has
03:19its complications and things of that sort as well this one's weird because then do you say like
03:25i don't know i'd say it you probably make it like the the back court rule in basketball is probably
03:32the
03:32best way you can say it to where you have to have you know because you can you can step
03:36across and back
03:37if you still only have one point across the half court line it's one of the weird rules basketball
03:42uh i don't know but people are you know bringing up points of this is that like
03:47well the one that i see a lot right now is isaiah likely the touchdown against the chiefs remember
03:52they got waved off because he was that far out of bounds and you could see his black cleats on
03:57the
03:57white line or kevin durant to being on the line so it wasn't a three it was a two and
04:02they lost the
04:03game because of it uh where it's it's true this is the rule but it's such a arbitrary in soccer
04:10it's
04:11such an arbitrary moment of when the ball is passed is like not because it's a fluid thing right you
04:20can
04:20see the lead up to the pass and you can see the ball being passed so but that exact moment
04:26your toe is
04:27offside so and i get it again it's the rule but the bigger argument to have here is in a
04:34sport where
04:34the score was literally zero zero in this game and there's been multiple in the world cup so far
04:40should we make it a little easier no but like i don't understand offside enough anyway i really
04:46don't other than this gives this little lying thing that they do at least helps me know what i'm looking
04:52at like whenever they need to make the call but if the rule is you can't have a toe offside
04:59and you
04:59can't have toe offside i mean you can't i agree do you need to change the rule though but what
05:04do
05:04you but what do you change it to you can have a toe but not a foot i'd say it
05:09can't be any any part
05:10of your torso can't be across or your head can't be across all right all right um because if your
05:17hand what if what if your hand is sticking out like there's been situations i don't know is that
05:21offside does that make it i think it is there's been some there's been some images of these virtual
05:26things that have gone viral over the years and this is going to be one that goes down
05:29in history i'm sure of this is probably the most egregious one that they've had uh i don't know
05:34what you do about it i think that you change it to some degree to be torso or like maybe
05:41your head
05:42your head can't be your entire body can be as long as your head isn't that's the middle point of
05:47your
05:47body uh something like that because at the end of the day people have brought it up unless you are
05:52like
05:54egregiously cherry picking in basketball cherry picking for lack of better terms
05:59offside doesn't matter that much it's still so hard to score right
06:05uh yeah i mean it's like the only rule though yeah like there you get one rule and it's that
06:11you or two i guess you can't touch the ball with your hand and you can't be offside and while
06:15i still
06:16don't fully understand offside and it drives me absolutely up the wall i think i think it's fine
06:22like it's what is more annoying what's more confusing to jacob albrock's brain icing and
06:27hockey or offside and soccer offside by him really i don't understand yeah i feel like every time i feel
06:33like is it is icing just where you pass it down that uh yeah it's pretty much offside in hockey
06:40but it's but you can be the playing field is so much tighter it's true i thought icing is just
06:50passing it and it goes past the goal without a it goes past the lines and i think they have
06:56offside
06:57technically in hockey right but it's it's like if you shoot it from what you know the the lines the
07:05blue the red and the blue the blue the center ice and then the other blue if you shoot it
07:09from your
07:10half all the way to the other goal line and nobody touches it then and and the reason for it's
07:21the
07:21same as offside right you can't just park somebody down there behind the net or whatever and pass it
07:26all the way across the ice down to him you can't leave a snowbird did you ever run snowbird and
07:30little
07:31little league basketball where like snowbird like somebody's just down on the other end and
07:36somebody throws it all the way down i've never heard that be called that but yeah that's what
07:40we called it was snowbird somebody would scream snowbird them and just throw it down there that's
07:45when when we run like press break in fifth grade girls basketball our press break was just
07:49throw it up like everybody sit here one person take off running and just throw it down there and
07:54they'll go get the ball you can't do that in hockey or soccer my problem with soccer
07:59is i don't understand when it's happening icing icing's like it's pretty easy to see because it
08:08all happens like right on the same screen right like you can see all the lines everything soccer i
08:15don't know what that guy was doing before this guy back here kicked it because we can't see him
08:18on the screen half the time so you don't know it's off until you get all excited and you just
08:23see
08:23the ref the little lame ref with his flag the flag to kill it kills me every time
08:28here's the other thing which one's off flag down or flag up that confuses i forget that too so i'm
08:35like why are they showing me the flag is he off or not like which way is the flag on
08:38or off it's
08:38like in or out in volleyball right in or it's out rick says tj don't worry you won't watch soccer
08:44four years after this tournament correct rick this is uh i'm turning a page in my life here
08:48no i'm going to rick i'm going to just to prove rick wrong you're not going to i won't let
08:55you
08:55become an mls junkie maybe you're not maybe maybe i'll pick up a premier league team maybe we should
09:01have a poll of who should tj's premier league team be i've tried this i've tried it and it was
09:06it ended
09:07up being tottenham the one with the little rooster and i was like all right i'm gonna be a tottenham
09:11fan
09:11it doesn't it's not gonna happen i'm just telling you it's not gonna happen because what it means is
09:16you have to now chisel out a different part of your day that's already but that's open else
09:21could be good they play in the mornings because the time that could be nice what are you what are
09:25you losing to do soccer like what are you giving up to do they need to play on the weekdays
09:30that's
09:31the problem with it is you have to and as you get older and you're a married man now things
09:35don't get
09:36any less busy then it's like now you have to make real changes to i need i need sporting to
09:43not be
09:43the worst team in the mls and i might i might still i've watched a current game a couple weeks
09:48ago they they were awesome they are awesome and i had more fun at that game live and in person
09:54than
09:54ever before but to to take on another commitment of time it gets harder and harder and is near
10:02impossible i remember my older brothers when i was you know would be just like die hard could recite
10:08every nfl draft pick for five rounds or whatever baseball or basketball and i'd be like what are
10:15you guys doing they're like man we're just like we don't have the time to to commit to it like
10:20we
10:20used to make whatever man whatever you're so lame and now i get it in everything we pulled up to
10:27to
10:27to make uh to uh you know disagree with rick's point here a little bit but maybe make his point
10:33even
10:33harder we were in the newsroom and we pulled up the 2014 world cup rosters and i'm like oh
10:37those yes i was awesome uh i watched a lot of that world right like i watched a lot of
10:44the 14 world
10:45cup i remember uh but yes i'm definitely a big world cup watcher but group me group me one step
10:49ahead of jacob at least rick jacob jacob is sure yeah jacob is the the casual of the casual world
10:57cup
10:58watcher uh i at least i at least call myself a single casual what did paul call himself paul
11:03called himself a knuckle dragger when it comes to soccer i i was there probably four years ago i may
11:10not be there now because i watch my kids play so much soccer i have somewhat of a better understanding
11:16rick i want to set a goal i'm setting a goal in my life rick i'm going to become a
11:21footy uh i mean
11:23i'm going to you're not what are you going to give up what are you going to give up to
11:27get there
11:27that's always a question i got to ask people like if you haven't loved it your whole life i don't
11:31think you're going to start loving it all of a sudden i'm just it's perfectly acceptable to be
11:37oblivious other than every four years i don't know why people are so sensitive about it it's what we do
11:43with the olympics right every four years i get fired up for curling that doesn't mean i have to go
11:50find
11:50curling in between olympics i don't and i won't i'm not going to and it's okay
11:56saying this in the state of kansas is a little different because people here are really up
12:00fired up about track and field but for most of us from outside you aren't watching you aren't
12:06watching pro track and field yes correct we get we get but i will i say that now knowing fully
12:11that our guy matt heilman that we work with at kwch and many others can tell you what world records
12:19are when they were set like they're into it that's a bigger deal here than what i was used to
12:25so i don't want to say everybody but most of us every four years we get really fired up for
12:32pole
12:32vault or whatever it is that takes it internationally and there's no there's no shame in that you don't
12:38have to have any shame they just be fired up every four years that's what it is for me with
12:42the world
12:42cup and i'm happy to do it i have loved this world cup it's been so damn fun all of
12:49it every bit of
12:50it's been fun and america just happens to be good i think again i don't really know but i think
12:58that
12:58they're good i i feel about america being good as i do about understanding offside which is not very
13:05confident but right now before they play i feel like they got a good chance and we'll see what
13:10happens and if they go down then i think i'm gonna stay into this one normally they go down and
13:17i'm out
13:17right like i'm out and i'm don't care we're becoming i'm telling you i need it i don't
13:23think that but but here's what i'm telling you the second the world cup's over i am out like i'm
13:30not
13:30all of a sudden gonna be like oh look there's mbappe i'm gonna be real in on who does mbappe
13:36play for
13:37do you know i don't know uh manchester united no i think he actually i don't know off the top
13:42of
13:42he used to play for psg does he play for chelsea now or no he plays in spain played right
13:47chelsea
13:48was politic he was like the first american good enough to play in the premier league
13:51i think that's right we're just how about that rick is footy knowledge rick is pulling his hair
13:57out he plays for madrid he plays in spudy now mbappe didn't even play in the premier league then
14:03what's the best league in the world premier okay and that's just in england yes and there's a spain
14:10league i've learned all about this uh it's a it's a lot of college football kind of talk it's like
14:15the sec big 10 situation a lot of times you're not going to catch me saying barcelona on this
14:20radio program four years rick give me a call all right well no in four years you'll have another
14:26world cup in two years rick give me a call yeah there you go all right we'll come back we
14:31got a
14:31more sports day let it go away
